Definitely the most diverse ballot we've had in a while. Posted by Garrick on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 07:18am |
That's a pretty interesting group of noms. Quick first impressions: Posted by Michael W on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 07:22am |
I am going to post my first predictions for inductions right now, but I have a method for beginning comparisons. Compare the list to last year's list. Find people on the list that could be two-time inductees. While there are three on the list, I'm going with the flow and picking the most popular inductee choice - The Foo Fighters. Now, I'm going to see who was nominated last year. (I am Not including Chaka Kahn). So, that leaves us with Todd Rundgren. Now, I will pick two previously nominated artists. I'm going with Rage Against the Machine and Devo right now. Finally, pick two brand new acts. However, there are only two new acts. I'm going with Jay-Z and leaving spot #6 open. Rock and roll may not be dead, but the rock and roll HOF is. Boring. Posted by Mattew Lukasiewicz on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 07:31am |
I'm surprised they nominated Jay-Z and LL Cool J in the same year. I would have thought Jay-Z would have been the lone hip-hop nominee so that he would easily coast in. Posted by Garrick on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 07:32am |
How can you leave off the Super Group " EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER'? ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING, SOPHISTICATED, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND fantastic musicians from the 70's. They used to fill massive stadiums back in their days and sold million of records. Time to put this group into the R&R Hall of Fame!! Give this group the respect they deserve!!! I have to say I'm disappointed with the ballot. No Bad Company, No Duran Duran, No Judas Priest, No Motley Crue, No Procol Harum, No Soundgarden, etc. Posted by KING on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 07:55am |

I don't know if I have been less excited about a list of nominees. Posted by Dezmond on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 08:59am |
First, as far as who is here on the list. I don't really care about many these artists. I don't dislike them, just...indifferent. But a few thoughts. First, glad to finally see Tina Turner nominated on her own. I have argued that should happen for over a decade. With all due respect to Stevie Nicks, Tina should have been the first double female inductee. I love Devo, but beyond their groundbreaking debut album, I'm not sure on their worthiness for HoF. I'll support them because I do love them personally, and perhaps one really important album is enough if some of their other albums were good and of their time and had some hits. Iron Maiden: I'm not a fan, but they should have been in long ago (along with Judas Priest). Foo Fighters works. I love Kate Bush. Jay-Z should get in. I guess Fela Kuti was the left field pick this time. I really like Kuti's work a lot, and it actually has had a lot of influence. So even though not a household name in the U.S., I wouldn't argue against his worthiness. But not going to happen. His nomination was his reward, I think. That does open up an interesting question as to world music artists in general. Posted by Dezmond on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 09:27am |

What an interesting list. I am actually surprised at how many women are on here. I'm so so happy about Kate Bush! She's by farrrrr the most deserving artist on the ballot but I'm worried that with other female snubs like Carole King or Tina Turner the American boomer voters are going to opt for them instead. I'm sure this list will piss off those pretentious "hall of shame" rock elitists because their favorite one-hit wonder band from the 70s didn't get a nomination and I'm happy about that tbh. I do still think there are some obvious snubs not on here (i.e. The Smiths) but I guess this is just the hall playing catch-up on a huge backlog of artists. Posted by Christian on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 09:35am |
Michael W - I predicted Fela! You can just put my dollar in a donation box for a good charity. I'm pretty sure at least one of the Hall bloggers also had him on their list. He just is too big of a name around the world with massive influence on numerous genres of music; he was bound to get a nomination some day. Posted by Shrek on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 10:04am |

You people are severely underestimating the induction potential of Fela Kuti. I get that he had no USA media or radio presence, thus had virtually no pop cult ID here. Basically he has the importance of Kraftwerk, but in this case every living HOF musician of the 70s that might not have liked Kraftwerk's weird electronic approach openly worships Fela for his innovative musicianship, sophisticated compositions, and awe inspiring live performances; music historians and critics also worship him. He's as important in Worldwide music as Bob Marley. Posted by Shrek on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 11:32am |

Quick thoughts before I get other stuff out of the way this morning and do a full rundown. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:19pm |
- Oh and predicting the fan vote Top 5. Foo Fighters top it due to lack of competition with "classic rock" Maiden being the runner-up. Rundgren and King are classic rock adjacent enough. It's the fifth spot that is a real wild card and I'll go with Devo. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:24pm |
Fela Kuti, New York Dolls, Kate Bush and Iron Maiden are an easy top four for me. So many choices for that fifth spot, though. Posted by DarinRG on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:26pm |
- It's funny because the ballot is BUILT to ensure a woman or POC gets the sixth slot if there is one. Once you count Jay-Z, Foo Fighters and King as locks, there's no way to get to #6 without doing so unless Devo/Dolls/Maiden all get in. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:29pm |
Here we go again another year and another snub year for Three Dog Night. This band is far and above any of the other bands that were nominated as far as number one hits, popularity and success. They are overlooked every single year and I find it appalling. They are well deserving and well overdo for the a nomination. Posted by Neil on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:29pm |
Blige- Hell no Posted by Garrus on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:31pm |
- I stand corrected. Rundgren. So, in theory, voters could select three or four of Rundgren/Devo/Dolls/Maiden after the three, in my opinion, locks - King, Jay and Foo. So, there still is potential for white guitar acts to crash the party. Unlikely though. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:31pm |
Where is Three Dog Night AGAIN?! Another year, another undeserved snub Posted by Mary on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:31pm |
Still processing this nominee list like everyone else. Early thoughts... Posted by remy10 on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:36pm |
It seems the older bands are being overlooked and pushed aside for new bands and rappers. Someone said Three Dog Night and Boston, two highly successful bands from the 70's that should have been inducted years ago. Bad Company, Doobie Brothers. Are they kidding me? Are they waiting for all these bandmembers to die off so they can do induct them post mortem? Posted by Roger on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:47pm |
- Roger, Doobie Brothers were inducted last year. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:52pm |
- Wouldn't it be some kind of BS if they decided to only have five inductees from such a diverse ballot? Effectively denying what likely would have been a female and/or black inductee for the sixth (or seventh) slot? Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:54pm |
So I come on here a lot but never have posted before and I think I finally should this ballot is very interesting definitely left field but I think we may have a 8 artist class. Posted by Tylerpadre on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 12:57pm |

Casper..sorry! I forgot the Doobies went in last year. What about Dave Matthews Band? There are a lot of 50s 60s and 70s bands that are being completely overlooked and I'm beginning to wonder how old some of these people on the committee are. Do they even know who Three Dog Night is? Kool and the Gang? Posted by Roger on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 13:02pm |
I'll throw this out there right now: Posted by Shrek on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 13:11pm |
Roger, if anything, the nominating committee has skewed super old. They are clearly slighting 90s acts (and previously - and now - 80s acts) because a lot of them are too focused on inducting their own childhood heroes. There's basically nobody on the committee young enough to have been a teenager buying albums by Beck, Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 13:40pm |
Only potential snubbed bandmembers would come from Foo Fighters. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 13:49pm |
Other members of Go-Gos and Maiden were their prior to or after their recording careers. Thus, they would not be snubs. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 13:50pm |

The Dude, Posted by richie on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 18:51pm |
- remy10, it's clear that the nominating committee just has its own dumb biases when it comes to the 90s. They are overlooking SO much great music. They really SHOULD have some white dudes on the committee in their thirties, because as of right now, there is nobody in that room to bat for Beck, Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Pavement, Pixies, Oasis, Weezer, etc. This is what happens when your nom com members are virtually all above the age of 50 and the youngest are women. They need younger voices on that committee who actually lived through the 90s and beyond as kids/teenagers. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 18:54pm |
Frankly, keep the committee numbers the same but replace the 60+ year old white guys with 30+ year old white guys and I think we would have a committee without any blind spots. At this juncture, the old white dude fogeys clearly aren't having much of a say, anyway, if this ballot is anything to go off of. Better to have someone in the room arguing for Weezer than for Tommy James & the Shondells... Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 18:57pm |
Also, it's absolutely fine for people to give Tina Turner or Carole King low grades or rankings or whatever. If these nominations truly are to represent their solo careers, then nothing Carole did in the 60s is relevant (except covering her own songs on some of the solo LPs) and nothing Tina did with Ike is relevant. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 19:03pm |
Interesting ballot but I don't see some of the logic. EX:Chaka Khan. If Chaka is someone the Committee wants inducted, it doesn't make sense to have Carole King, Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Tina Turner on the same ballot. Same with Dionne Warwick. She's finally on the ballot but has to go up against Blige, Khan, King, Turner, etc. Posted by KING on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 19:06pm |
Why does FLR keep insisting that the fan vote is meaningless? If 7 out of the 8 winners got inducted, it has to have some meaning. Besides, lets hope that once is an accident and the fan vote winner will get inducted this year. (So far it's Tina Turner) Posted by Follower on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 19:10pm |

Oooooh now, this class is very interesting. Both more black artists and most importantly black WOMEN nominated at once. I dont care for much of the rock-leaning acts if I'm honest. If I'm being practical though, so much diversity won't end up good when the voting comes around as most of the acts here who are noteworthy will cancel each other out. Tina, Jay and FF are the three lock ins tho and i'll be both surprised and upset if they dont get in. Posted by ABJ on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 19:40pm |
Hey Guys, Posted by richie on Wednesday, 02/10/2021 @ 20:10pm |
richie, Induction of a lower-tier solo female name (anybody not named Carole King or Tina Turner) would probably open the floodgates for options like Carly Simon, etc. Especially if they got in on a ballot with so many female-fronted acts splitting the vote. Is there a need to have a separate rock hall for prog rock bands..most notably Jethro Tull ( 50 years of performing )- and sales 10 x many inductees--attend a show, you'll know why -- and ELP ( we've waited long enough where 2/3 of the band having passed now - and Rock and Roll wise - how can Bad Company not be eligible ? Some bands who were eligible earlier on had much tougher competition when we were sill backload decades of stars. How about a 'veterans' committee like baseball has ? Still appreciative of the Hall - great time on visits.. Posted by 65 yr old Dave on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 10:40am |

I honestly think that this is a pretty wide open year this year, I think that all of the nominees deserve to be in except Fela Kuti (There are other left-field picks that are much more deserving that should have gotten nominated like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks to name a few), but overall, They did a great job nominating more women and more people of color this year than in years past, Instead of making predictions for this year's inductees as I have done for the past three years, This year, I'm going to list off all the acts in order of getting inducted: Posted by richie on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 12:49pm |

I know it sounds crazy but they have snubbed first ballot locks before ( Radiohead and rage come to my head) so I'm just wondering if it's entirely possible? I think if Fela Kuti gets in this year, I think it will be either as an Early Influence or as a Musical Excellence recipient, rather than as a Performer, He just doesn't deserve to be inducted as a Performer, especially with so many other deserving acts on this year's ballot far more deserving than him, I think that there are other left-field picks that are far more deserving that should have gotten nominated over him like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks to name a few, so I think that if he gets in this year, I think it will be either as an Early Influence or as a Musical Excellence recipient, rather than as a Performer. Posted by richie on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 15:13pm |
I've been tweeting about Fela Kuti on Twitter a couple of times today and I wouldn't count him out at all. He's well-liked and respected by many music critics and HOFers/musicians who are voters (think a Miles Davis-Nina Simone-esque figure here). He's #7 right now and could easily go into the Top 5 if the momentum continues. It seems like a lot of the online voters are only voting for Kuti (thanks to people promoting it on Twitter with large followings) and that's definitely helping him rise quickly on the fan count. An induction isn't out of the question. Posted by Nick on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 15:15pm |
There's one other thing about Fela Kuti, He's not as well-known as Miles Davis, Joan Baez and Nina Simone, All three of them were much more well-known and much more respected by critics and HOFers than Fela was, so that definitely hurts his chances for getting in as a Performer this year, If he gets in this year, It will be either as an Early Influence or as a Musical Excellence recipient, rather than as a Performer. Posted by richie on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 15:23pm |
In America, yes, he's not a household name but globally he's a titan. It's not just anyone voting in these elections, it's musicians, historians and critics who all (should definitely) have some knowledge of Fela Kuti. If they don't, then they probably aren't qualified RH voters. He could easily get enough support for induction in the Performers category. Don't sleep on it. Just because someone isn't born or huge in America does not mean the larger voting wouldn't vote for him. This is a bold and important nomination as far as international musicians go. He's now ahead of RATM and #6 on the fan vote. I know the fan vote is essentially meaningless but this is unexpected and incredible. Posted by Nick on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 15:45pm |

So, I was very suspicious about Fela, so I took data to check the number of votes people get in the span of 10 minutes. Here's the results: Posted by Dookie on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:01pm |
It's probably because people are only voting for Fela and that's it. It's manipulating the fan vote to maximum effect and getting "their" artist higher on the f an vote. It's clearly working in Fela's favor. Posted by Nick on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:09pm |
Dookie, it's not suspicious. Fela's supporters are just voting Fela ONLY. So he gains +1 on every other artist every time someone submits a ballot rather than just +1 over 11 other artists. Posted by Casper on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:10pm |
Fela's vote total is climbing so rapidly from this strategic voting that he could be in a strong 3rd place in mere hours. If his fans kept this up just for a single week, it probably would secure him a top five spot by the end of this. Posted by Casper on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:13pm |
Casper is absolutely right here; this is why Fela's moving so rapidly on the fan vote. I think he could be in the top five by the end of today. Posted by Nick on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:21pm |
I guess we can welcome him with Benetar, Soundgarden, DMB, Priest and Rundgren in the list of Top 5 fan vote artists not to get inducted. Posted by Follower on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:31pm |
Dividing overall vote count by an average ballot size of 4 votes gives us 81,292 ballots. Posted by Casper on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 16:34pm |
Only Fela or Tina have the fan base that is diehard enough to help them win the fan vote. Rawkists are probably so bored by the ballot that they will just give up which means Foo Fighters (and act few actually LOVE) and Iron Maiden can't come out on top. I think that Fela Kuti will join Judas Priest, Dave Matthews Band, Pat Benatar and Soundgarden as acts that finished in the top five of the fan vote but didn't get in, IMO, He just doesn't deserve induction as a Performer, As an Early Influence or as Musical Excellence? Yes, but not as a Performer especially with bigger and more well-known names on the ballot this year. Posted by richie on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 18:59pm |

I'm confused why you keep suggesting country artists as a left-field pick that ultimately went to Fela Kuti. I mean, it could've been from any genre really and it wouldn't have mattered. You're really underestimating how well-respected and acclaimed he truly is. Listen to "Zombie" and you'll understand why he's a worthy nominee (and inductee). But you're not elaborating on why you think he's unworthy. It's super faulty and weak to say someone isn't Rock Hall material when they're not well-known or commercially successful. The Rock Hall has never been about that. Rather, it's about an artist's impact and influence. Fela Kuti's got that in spades. Btw, I predicted Gils-Scott Heron for this year's class. Sorry Richie, but that doesn't make sense and I haven't heard you articulate one legitimate reason yet on why Fela Kuti is unworthy. Induction into the Rock Hall has nothing to do with how many albums you sold and how famous you are. It has to be more impact and influence, that's the real reason why someone should be considered for the Rock Hall. Posted by Nick on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 23:35pm |

Also, since Jay-Z isn't winning the fan vote, this is another year where the winner of the fan vote isn't the biggest albums act or the biggest singles act! This also happened in 2015, where SRV beat both Green Day and The Spinners. Posted by Follower on Thursday, 02/11/2021 @ 23:57pm |
Just because you're unfamiliar with an artist's music doesn't mean they're unworthy. You should explore his brilliant catalogue and then make a decision if you still feel that way. Go to YouTube, Spotify or iTunes and listen to some of his songs. Yes, he's challenging but he's the masters of the Afrobeat and a massive figure in world music. I'm pretty sure some of your favorite musicians (from McCartney to John to Baker to Morello) are on record praising Fela to no end. And this doesn't even scratch the surface of his importance as a political activist. He's almost too over-qualified for the Rock Hall tbh and I'm kicking myself for not putting him somewhere on my recent Top 100 Project that I just completed. But anyway, to say you think someone is unworthy is not a good reason to dismiss an artist's chance. Take some time and listen to some of his records and let us know what you think of it. Yet, I don't feel as excited? Like my ones in my Magnificent Seven (Foo Fighters and Rage Against The Machine) should get me hype, but I'm rather mute. I think that Fela Kuti will end up like Dave Matthews Band and become the second fan vote winner to not get inducted just like DMB were last year. Well, they got Jay-Z right. Even if I'm not a fan and much prefer LL, I can't deny his influence. And while I love many on the list, I can't make a case for them over some that haven't been inducted. Nick Cave, The Smiths, Bjork, and hell the mighty John Coltrane have all been left behind. Coltrane, I suppose, could get an influences nod. But these are just a handful that I find as more influential than most on the list that just aren't getting recognition. Posted by Jeremyadk on Friday, 02/12/2021 @ 08:06am |

I think Richie is getting some unfair criticism. The FRL Regulars and some other music fans and critics typed out their 15-20 groups for their RRHOF nominees. Many were given extra time from October to early February to finalize their ballots. I might have seen Fela Kuti mentioned twice at the most 3 times in over 50+ ballots. Plenty of music fans and critics missed on Fela Kuti. It's still early in the fan voting and the RRHOFers will have the final decision. They will be receiving and sending in their ballots. It will be difficult for Kuti to be voted in. Carole King, Tina Turner, and Iron Maiden are usually up there every year for Top snubs. All 3 are on the ballot this year including 2 appear to be locks in Foo Fighters and Jay-Z. LL Cool J could be a sentimental FAV with his 6 Nominations and Influence on later rappers. I still can't believe he's not inducted. The Go-Go's are finally on the ballot and will receive their share of votes. New York Dolls and Todd Rundgren could be Wild Cards receiving votes from the 70's RRHOF hard rock and metal artists. Kuti's Induction is no sure thing. Richie was correct when DMB outlasted the nominee field in 2020 winning the fan vote but fell short with the voters. It could happen again. KING Posted by KING on Saturday, 02/13/2021 @ 02:14am |

It seems to be somewhat obvious that Fela Kuti was nominated as a Wild Card, out of left field, under the radar artist. Priest came in last or near last both times they were nominated. Not gonna lie, but compared to other Hall of Fame Watcher communities like Sports and Movies, we tend to be the most toxic. Why is that? Seriously I look at other Sports or Movie Hall of Fame forums and they seem to be the most chill people out there whereas when I check the Rock Hall forums it's always the same complaints over and over again. Interestingly, RATM has been very silent on their 3rd nomination and I haven't heard of any backlash thrown at them. I think that Fela Kuti will end up more like John Prine and not Miles Davis, Joan Baez and Nina Simone in that a non-Rock act that is well-respected by critics and fellow musicians doesn't get in, As I've said it before, The fan vote doesn't really matter anymore, It really doesn't, Last year showed us that with Dave Matthews Band and It'll be a repeat of that this year, I think that Fela will become the second fan vote winner to not get inducted following DMB last year, It'll be the same thing that we saw last year with DMB that the fan vote winner doesn't get inducted for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, my Rock Hall nominees' list had only 4 of the present nominees on it (Tina Turner, Carole King, The Go-Gos and Jay-Z), which means that it this list is definitely not stellar by any stretch of the imagination. I am hugely disappointed that neither Sade, nor Carly Simon, nor The Bangles, nor Duran Duran, nor Jethro Tull are on this list. Although, I appreciate Tom Morello and Dave Grohl, my sincere hope is that neither Foo Fighters, nor Rage Against The Machine get inducted this year. I also hope that Jay-Z and LL Cool J, cancel each other out. In my honest opinion, I would also like to see Devo and The New York Dolls cancel each other out, also. So who does that leave- Todd Rundgren, Iron Maiden, Fela Kuti, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige, Dionne Warwick, Carole King, The Go-Gos, Kate Bush and Tina Turner? Lol Hall Watchers podcast saying whoever says this ballot is boring are meaningless and stupid sort of a dumb rebuttal. The people don't hate anyone on this list, they acknowledge their accomplishments, but this list does not really get people too hyped as much as they think. I feel this ballot was specifically geared towards the outspoken Rock Hall Bloggers and the critics of the Rock Hall now that I think about it. And another thing, Todd Rundgren has a right to be angry. If Steve Miller can get angry at the Hall and we let it slide like he is on our side, then so does Todd and the rest of the acts that have criticized the Hall. Sorry everyone I just needed some venting on these particular subjects. Posted by Plebian on Tuesday, 02/16/2021 @ 19:55pm |

Fela Kuti is pretty unlikely to win the fan vote unless the Afrobeat artists and fans keep promoting him on Twitter. Is lead over Tina Turner is shortening by the thousands each day, and if this were to keep up, he would be at risk of not even making Top Five. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 02/17/2021 @ 20:53pm |

Mostly agree with Roy's comments on Dionne Warwick. Much bigger star than Manilow or Olivia Newton-John. The Carpenters (to me) are close to her stardom. I don't see Dionne Warwick as a lock as long as Carole King and Tina Turner are on the ballot. Chaka Khan would need a miracle too. She couldn't be inducted on stronger ballots or weaker ballots. Lossed straight up to Whitney Houston last year. Now Chaka up against Carole King, Dionne Warwick, Kate Bush, Mary J. Blige etc. Good luck with that. Chaka could become the next Chic. Roy gave the "Reader's Digest" version of The Go-Go's lineup. All five of the nominated members appear on all the band's albums. Belinda and Jane were founding members in 1978 with non-nominated bass and drum players. By the time the band began recording, Gina was on drums, Kathy was on bass, and Jane had switched to from lead to rhythm guitar so the band could bring in Charlotte on lead. Could it happen this time around? Could we possibly have an all female inductee class in 2021? Posted by Enigmaticus on Friday, 02/19/2021 @ 21:20pm |
An all-female class would be interesting, but not likely. Remember, Alan Light was pushing for Early Influence Kraftwerk. I predict that will happen since they weren't nominated this year. Posted by Follower on Friday, 02/19/2021 @ 22:50pm |

An all female one would probably work, but in my opinion, wouldn't that be also pretty sexist towards all the guy acts? Like shouldn't the class be reflective of all genres of rock music regardless of race and gender? Aren't they all treated equally on the ballot as many other music acts? Another thing, it would be pretty pandering as not many people don't respond well when diversity quota like that is mentioned. Posted by Plebian on Friday, 02/19/2021 @ 23:36pm |

Link Wray seems perfectly fit for the Early Influence category. Maybe Early Influence can be used for those that were relevant before the 50s all the way to the tipping of said 50s? Posted by Plebian on Saturday, 02/20/2021 @ 02:09am |
I disagree, richie. I think the musicians in Hall that had to struggle at start of their careers look at all the help The Monkees received and just disregard them as major studio-created entities. Posted by Paul in KY on Saturday, 02/20/2021 @ 07:11am |

It's called the "Rock n Roll" Hall of Fame, so why are several non-rockers inducted? They should name it something like "Musical Artist's Hall of Fame." That way Everyone could Fairly be included. The ONLY one I vote for everyday is TODD RUNDGREN!!! Second & Third choice would be: Tina Turner & Carol King. These 3 have been around since the 1960's, unlike most of the other nominees. As for the list of most-hated artists, I wouldn't put too much stock in who's on that list. Outside of the low-hanging fruit that is Nickelback/Limp Bizkit/Creed, the rest of the acts are immensely big bands and that is exactly what you'd expect on a list like this. There aren't going to be a ton of people who hate Men Without Hats because they didn't leave enough of a mark for people to hate them. It's hard to hate music you haven't heard very much. Posted by Michael W on Monday, 02/22/2021 @ 14:38pm |
Aw, sad to hear about Daft Punk. I really hope that they get considered one day, and I think there's a good chance they will. They've always seemed to have more of a significant and enduring cultural profile than some of their contemporaries like The Chemical Brothers, and they've got some great music to back it up (Instant Crush is probably in my top 20 favorite songs of all time). I think that in kind of an ironic way, their anonymity and robot personas enabled them to have more of an iconic personality than most EDM producers. I don't think that Kraftwerk getting in will necessarily open the floodgates for a whole bunch of other purely electronic acts, but I think and hope that Daft Punk will be considered sometime soon. Here's another little list project I've been working on - I like to use the Spotify "Fans Also Like" tab on each artist to find connections between current and possible future Hall of Famers, and I figure I would do so for the current nominee class. This helps us keep track of which artists have similar listener bases, and who could be considered in the future if the nominated artist is inducted. Each artist connects to 20 others through the tab, and I will also include the current Hall of Famers that connect to the nominated artists through their pages (marked with an asterisk). It's comical how some want to pigeonhole the rrhof. The angry rock purists forever can't wrap their heads around the fact that rock and roll evolved from a multitude of other styles that their precious rock music is a very small part of. I have never met a person who said Chuck Berry wasn't rock and roll, but it seems he spawned the Beatles and no one else and the rest is history to some. If Fela Kuti was to get inducted this year, I think that they would induct him either as an Early Influence just like Wanda Jackson, Freddie King and The '5' Royales or as a Musical Excellence recipient just like Nile Rodgers rather than as a Performer. Posted by richie on Wednesday, 02/24/2021 @ 12:33pm |
I'm not sure if they would do that. They might just nominate him again if he doesn't get in this year. His first album was out in 1969 so It would be too soon for early influence unless they expand that category and call it rock n roll pioneers or something like that. Maybe musical excellence would be something else to look into as well but doubt it. Again they could just nominate him again in another year or so. Could you do a nominee history? Posted by Garrus on Tuesday, 03/2/2021 @ 19:34pm |
You know what would make the fan vote more relevant? Anyone finishing in the Top Five should not just get a vote on a ballot from it (or two given the whisperings we hear from Hall people) but also an AUTOMATIC ballot nomination the very next year. Then the fan vote would serve an actual purpose - ensuring that populist candidates have another shot at induction. Posted by Casper on Tuesday, 03/2/2021 @ 20:48pm |
So the next group of Nominees would be DMB, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden, Judas Priest, Todd Rundgren and anyone from the current top 5 that doesn't make it? (Current top 5: Fela/Tina/Foos/Maiden/Go-Go's) Posted by Follower on Tuesday, 03/2/2021 @ 22:35pm |

2020 was not the best year for many of us. And indeed, it seemed an abberation for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame regardng their 2020 class. From what I could tell, half of their Performer inductees had died Before their eventual induction (Whitney Houston, Christopher Wallace/The Notorious B.I.G., and T. Rex). As well, an artist I assumed would be inducted, Dave Matthews, did not get inducted. This is despite the fact DMB won the fan vote. Little surprise that the HBO presentation was the way it was. Even so, it was nice to see the participation of living inductees Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and The Doobie Brothers; along with Jon Landau and that one agent who bought his way to induction. Hopefully Jeff "Skunk" Baxter gets inducted into the RRHOF on his own, as we did for him with the Revisited/Projected Rock Hall Project. Posted by Lax38 on Friday, 03/5/2021 @ 21:03pm |

So if Foo Fighters and Jay-Z both get inducted this year, which one do you think would be the headliner for the ceremony? Jay-Z is the bigger star of the two and would likely headline if they were in a neutral setting. But Foo Fighters are obviously the more traditional rock band and might appeal more to the fan base that would attend/tune into the ceremony. I think I'd still lean toward Jay-Z headlining myself, but I'm curious what the rest of you think. Posted by Michael W on Wednesday, 03/10/2021 @ 06:40am |
Jay Z would be the headliner. For the simple reason of the atmosphere we are in; he speaks of diversity, and additionally, I believe Tina Turner, who quietly is a guaranteed thing herself, will be the highlight of the ceremony. Posted by K Dawg on Wednesday, 03/10/2021 @ 10:36am |
Fela took number 1 again! A Musical Excellence slot for him would be dumb IMO as I think he maybe part of the performers. Posted by Plebian on Wednesday, 03/10/2021 @ 11:07am |
I think that Fela Kuti will end up like the Dave Matthews Band and become the second fan vote winner to not get inducted just like DMB were last year, I think that there are not very many voters that will vote for him (There are a few that will vote for him but not a lot will vote for him), so I think that Fela will end up like DMB and become the second fan vote winner to not get inducted, I think that Fela will become the second fan vote winner to not get inducted following Dave Matthews Band (aka DMB) last year, It'll be the same thing that we saw last year with DMB that the fan vote winner doesn't get inducted for the second year in a row. Posted by richie on Wednesday, 03/10/2021 @ 12:00pm |
I don't think Fela, Todd Rundgren, or Kraftwerk will be inducted as ME this year. It took 11 nominations for Chic over 15 years to get Nile Rodgers an ME induction and those other three aren't close to that yet. They'll all keep getting noms for a few more years before that happens (unless they get in as performers). Posted by Michael W on Wednesday, 03/10/2021 @ 12:36pm |

Up Next is Chicago. Another favorite act of mine. They are very deserving of the induction. They are one of the most successful American bands of all time. So why the hell did it take Chicago so long to be Inducted. I Love the early Chicago the best. They started out in 1969 with the release Chicago Transit Authority. It did rather well. But they were soon not allowed to use the name. They shortened it to Chicago. In 1970 they released Chicago II. It did really well. And that was followed by Chicago III. They became a major selling band in the early 70s. I will have much more on Chicago. I just wanted to get started with Chicago. I love their first 10 albums. Those albums hit the spot. They helped define Jazz Rock. I'll have more sooon Posted by Ben on Monday, 03/15/2021 @ 16:52pm |

Well. Might be the most disingenuous list ever from the nominating committee. Jay-Z, no problem, highly successful, reasonably influential, and presuming rap/hip-hop belongs in the Hall (i have no problem with it), then he is a lock. Tina, again, no issue. She is way ahead of Stevie Nicks, and should have been first woman inducted twice. For a fun exercise, compare Stevie to Don Henley, and tell me why the former is in and the latter will almost certainly never get in as a solo artist. But it goes down hill after that. Carole King? Are we now going to dual-induct every artist that is successful in both the performer and writer categories. If so then Dylan should be first, and by a long shot. This is just pandering to the notion that more women are needed in the Hall. OK, but you chose the wrong ones. You want a 70's singer songwriter, take Carly Simon. I am aware of the school of thought that suggests that Carole King had two separate careers, but so what. She was a recording artist from the start, just not successful. Randy Newman had same trajectory, and to an extent so did Dylan. It is a bad precedent. Besides, her recording accomplishments were acknowledged in her induction as a writer, and (I think) on the plaque in the Hall. Posted by Souljah on Tuesday, 03/16/2021 @ 13:53pm |
The group that headlined the 2016 class was Cheap Trick. I like Cheap Trick they are Ok. They were inducted and were the last act to perform. They did the All star Jam. I think they headlined out of default. The other 3 Rock acts some kind of issue. Deep Purple had problems with some band members showing up. Chicago had huge disagreements with Peter Cetera. Cetera refused to show up. A full Chicago reunion with Cetera would have made them the headliner. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 03/16/2021 @ 13:55pm |
To add to comments on Carole King, this means that Dylan, Lennon, McCartney, Randy Newman, Gibb Brothers and Neil Diamond all belong. And who knows who else. Posted by Souljah on Tuesday, 03/16/2021 @ 14:18pm |
I still want to see if Philip still holds the "Dionne Warwick is Barbra Streisand but black" opinion. Posted by Follower on Tuesday, 03/16/2021 @ 19:17pm |
Dionne Should be more easier to induct than Barbra cause R&B acts from the 60's and 70's are more closer to sound like some of the pioneers of Rock & Roll like Little Richard and Chuck Berry. That's how Nina Simone made it as a voting body winner in 2018. Posted by The Dude on Tuesday, 03/16/2021 @ 21:12pm |

Cause the 90's never went away culturally in the early 2000's, which makes them as bridge between before that and the 2010's. Also the 90's and early 2000's are both considered as the Generation X era. Posted by The Dude on Wednesday, 03/17/2021 @ 21:37pm |

I swear if Iron Maiden does not get in, then the heavy metal genre is hopeless for any chance with the Hall. As I stated, they have more notability than Motörhead and have more critical love than Judas Priest. Another thing is that Iron Maiden right now is the highest heavy metal act to chart the fan vote (Priest was always in 5th). Posted by Plebian on Thursday, 03/18/2021 @ 00:37am |

How many of the top 5 acts in the fan vote this year (Fela Kuti, Tina Turner, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters and The Go-Go's) do you think will get in this year?. I know that only one of the top five acts from last year's fan vote made it last year (The Doobie Brothers) but do you guys see it happening again this year with only one of the top five acts from this year's fan vote (most likely Tina Turner) making it this year just like last year?. Posted by richie on Thursday, 03/18/2021 @ 11:46am |
It shouldn't be like "Do you want to be inducted?". That's really absurd and makes it less of an honor or award show. Posted by Garrus on Thursday, 03/18/2021 @ 15:44pm |

I do want to mention also with acts in the 2016 class. I love Chicago a lot. My favorite stuff of theirs is the first 10 albums, They certainly have a long career.. Their popularity spans from 1969-1989. That's what I would say. I like certain songs after the first 10 albums. It's mostly hits that I know after the first 10. I never bought their albums after Chicago X. But I don't mind Baby What a Big Surprise, Alive Again and even Hard to Say I'm Sorry. Any Chicago I like is with Peter Cetera. But albums I jam with from Chicago are ones like Chicago VI and Chicago VII. That's as far as Chicago. Posted by Ben on Friday, 03/19/2021 @ 04:55am |

NWA was groundbreaking. They are contemporaries to Public Enemy to be sure. However, they dared go into a direction not previously seen with a genre. You might recall the group 2 Live Crew and their subsequent battles with the law over lyrics and objectification, among other things. Reminiscent of Jim Morrison and the Doors, it was the government, authority, whatever you want to call it, acting out against different and new ideas. NWA did the same thing, but at the same time it connected with millions of young people. Their impact, and the legacy of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and all of their proteges has become so entangled with the music scene and the world that everyone knows who they are. The only real argument that's ever come up is whether rap belongs in the Hall, and there has been ample proof that it is just as much a derivative of early rock and roll as rock, metal or pop music. Not the write up I wanted to have on them, but an explanation of why I think they, and several other "gangsta" rap groups, are more than deserving of enshrinement Posted by K Dawg on Friday, 03/19/2021 @ 12:01pm |

I do ask this though as far as other genres other than rock getting inducted. The Hall includes Rap music for induction. That's fine. I assume we can include some influential Jazz masters for induction in the future for Induction like John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock. I advocate for some other Jazz masters to be inducted. This did already happen with Miles Davis in 2006. So it's very possible I'd say a couple more Jazz artists can be inducted. Just wanted to mention that. Cheap Trick strength is its consistent greatness and longevity. A strong Midwestern work ethic and mostly a stable lineup of 40+ years. Robin Zander is 1 of my FAV vocalists. I would say he and the group are still underrated. He has a high-reaching soaring tenor that can be seen in Ghost Town and The Flame. With his blond mane and good looks, he is the perfect frontman. For some reason, he is never mentioned with the great rock vocalists of the era. Mick Jagger, Paul Rodgers, Steve Perry, Lou Gramm, etc. That's a shame. Rick Nielsen is a solid and great guitar player. Again, he is never mentioned with any of the guitar legends. My FAV Cheap Trick songs are Don't Be Cruel, Dream Police, Surrender, Ghost Town, The Flame etc. Cheap Trick is Cheap Trick. What you see is what you get. I think the band doesn't take themselves too seriously. Solid power pop and rock songs. They have excellent concert performances and don't need these extravagant stage shows or gimmicks. Maybe, that hurts people's perception of them. They seem to be cool and have fun on stage. Nielsen seems like a real jokester and character. They were inducted for their Influence on later bands similar to The Cars. Also, a solid career and a few big hit songs like Surrender and The Flame. I think they were worthy of Induction although you could argue some bands could have been Inducted before them. Posted by KING on Saturday, 03/20/2021 @ 17:25pm |

I do own NEW WORLD record. I think that's their best one. Just like Follower I mostly like the tunes on compilations. I will continue 2017 class with Joan Baez. Joan Baez was inducted in 2017. She performed next at the 2017 ceremony. It had been awhile since a singer/songwriter had been inducted. This gave the 2017 class some extra diversity. Joan Baez was a key folk singer in the 1960's. She is one of the world's most famous female folk singers. Also. I would concur with Enigmaticus that Mr. Blue Sky might be my FAV ELO song. There's no doubt Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. He always looks the same. It's quite amazing. I've noticed the RRHOF has nominated groups with legendary and respected musicians recently. EX: Jeff Lynne ELO, Mark Knopfler Dire Straits, Steve Miller Steve Miller Band etc. ELO was deserving of the RRHOF considering their many hit songs. 1970's and 1980's period. Don't Bring Me Down, Hold On Tight, Mr. Blue Sky, Telephone Line, etc. I can't say I am wearing any ELO concert shirts but they made great songs. Joan Baez should have been inducted years ago. It was probably 1 of those things going around the Committee table. Someone proposed Joan Baez as a Nominee. Most probably were surprised she had not been nominated. A strong singing voice, outstanding guitar playing, and excellent folk songs. I was happy to see she was in good health for the Induction. Hopefully, Peter, Paul & Mary will be Nominated & Inducted soon. KING Posted by KING on Thursday, 03/25/2021 @ 08:03am |

Yes were finally Inducted to the RnR Hall of Fame in 2017. This was a great triumph for Prog Rock. Also both ELO and YES were inducted at the same time. I will continue with Yes. With The Yes Album performing well on both sides of the Atlantic, Yes toured heavily, and began work on Fragile. Kaye quit the band in August 1971 to join, so Yes hired Rick Wakeman, an experienced keyboardist. Wakeman's majestic, nearly Baroque style -- created with a bank of nearly a dozen instruments -- combined with Howe's intricate guitar, the supple rhythm section of Squire and Bruford, and the cool vocals of Anderson gave Yes a unique sound, while album designer Roger Dean gave the band a distinctive, fantastical look. This combination was revealed on Fragile, an album that featured showcases for each of the musicians along with two of their key tunes: the epic "Long Distance Runaround" and "Roundabout," which went all the way to number 13 on Billboard. This same lineup quickly released a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" as a single -- it peaked at 46 -- but their primary interest was albums with themes, such as the 1972 record Close to the Edge, which contained two lengthy suites. The album was a smash in both the U.S. and the U.K., reaching number three and number four, respectively. Posted by Ben on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 06:01am |

Since when Rage were considered as a niche band? They're a Mid/Theater-Level band like NIN and Radiohead. Even if they had headlined some arenas before, it had never happened regularly to them compared to Iron Maiden and Motley Crue. That's why the consumer demands aren't high for bands from the 90's cause they're treated as disposable fads from the general public's point-of-view in the Gen-X crowd, unless you're Dave Matthews. People still mostly think about the 50's through the 80's when they think of the Hall cause they're considered as the "golden" era of music while the 90's through now are considered as the "dark" era. Sure, that might sound like generation gaps, but it's a very common opinion. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 13:39pm |
Sad how the 90s does not get respect compared to the other decades. They deserve to put in the same acclaim as those before them. Posted by Plebian on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 14:40pm |
The 90's would get respected as other decades if they were less internal issues, premature break up's and lengthy hiatuses. That's why grunge went on a decline in popularity sooner than expected while Heavy Glam Rock, New Wave, and Thrash Metal had lasted a little longer. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 15:10pm |
90s music is still seen as important part of pop culture though. They aren't considered the dark ages or whatever. It was seen as the time of seeing the next generation (Generation X) thrive and become the norm. The baby boomer voters may think the 90s only had a handful of good acts, but the music acts during that time were great. Rage I feel even back then was huge and aren't considered theater level like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. What I'm saying is 90s music and culture in general has had enough impact to be in the leagues as the previous decades. People like Rick Beato, who is the definition of a 'boomer' rock star, even states the 90s deserves recognition. Even stupid Vulture writer Bill Wyman gives the 90s their due! Lots of today's generation (including me) see the 90s as the last time of a pre-internet/ 9/11 era. We see them holy in the same veins as those Gen X rockstars looked up to their boomer rockstar idols. Legends I tell you! Posted by Plebian on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 16:54pm |

I get the importance of the 90's, I'm just pointing out some of the mistakes bands from that era made and their flaws. I still wouldn't Rage to be huge in terms of mainstream popularity; their fanbase didn't grew rapidly as Nirvana's, Green Day's, Pearl Jam's, and DMB's. If they didn't split up after their cover album ironically during the George W. Bush era while still making more music and kept touring more, they would be more big than they are now and also be more easier to capitalize. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 17:36pm |

I will continue once again with my write up on Yes. I continue with 1980. Yes entered the 1980's in an uncertain way. Yes attempted to start a new album in March 1980, but Wakeman and Anderson quickly left the sessions. As their replacements, Howe, Squire, and White hired Trevor Horn and Geoffrey Downes -- of the new wave group the Buggles, The resulting Drama performed alright reaching number two in the U.K. and 18 in the U.S. Atlantic rushed out Yesshows, a double-live album culled from recordings from the mid-'70s, in January 1981, but a few months later Yes announced their breakup. Howe and Downes formed Asia with John Wetton and Carl Palmer, scoring a major hit in 1982 with that debut album. A lot of us own the Asia 1st album. Posted by Ben on Saturday, 03/27/2021 @ 04:02am |
Your pick of the best decade for music is always subjective. For me, the 80s was great, but the 90s was when music was transformative to me, both in the evolution away from strictly guitar rock as the main form of "rock music" and the evolution of rap. I am NOT a big rap fan. But Tupac Shakur is an icon in Rap music. Even a Rock guy like me knows that. He is better known by his stage name 2Pac. He is considered by many to be very influential. It's true that no nominee is ever a lock (just ask Radiohead), but I do think that Jay-Z and Foo Fighters might be MUCH more vulnerable than everyone's been expecting. Especially, Jay-Z, as he has LL Cool J to contend with. Posted by Steve Z on Monday, 03/29/2021 @ 15:44pm |
Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. I think a lot of people are experiencing Grohl overload and that could cost foo fighters. He's kinda been everywhere lately. Tina is the only one I feel really certain about. She seems to pop up on every ballot you hear about. I still think Jay-Z and Carole King make it, but you never know. The Go-Go's might be this year's Doobie Brothers, just cruising along sort of under the radar until they get inducted. Nile Rodgers was inducted in the Musical Excellence category at the 2017 Ceremony. This happened after about 9 nominations went to Chic. I am into Various genres. I am into a lot of Rock but also like a lot of R&B, Jazz along with other genres. I think this is the last time the Musical Excellence award was used. I've often been at odds with Rap but I can definitely appreciate R&B and funk. Nile Rodgers was originally a member of the disco group Chic. But he became so much more than that. I am Not bothered at all that Nile Rodgers was inducted under Musical Excellence rather than there be more nominations of Chic. He is very deserved as an inductee, Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 03/30/2021 @ 16:23pm |

I Now continue with Pearl Jam. In late summer of 1996, Pearl Jam released their fourth album, No Code. Although the record was greeted with fairly positive reviews and debuted at number one, its odd mix of rock and worldbeat dissatisfied a large portion of their fans, and it quickly fell down the charts. The album's performance was also hurt by Pearl Jam's inability to launch a full-scale tour, due both to their battle with Ticketmaster and a reluctance to spend months on the road. The band spent most of 1997 out of the spotlight, working on new material; Gossard also released a second album with his side project Brad, titled Interiors. By the end of the year, Pearl Jam had completed a new, harder-rocking record entitled Yield. The album was greeted with enthusiastic reviews upon its February 1998 release, but its commercial sales weren't quite as clear-cut. While their sizable cult embraced the album, sending it to number two its first week of release, Yield quickly slipped down the charts. Pearl Jam supported the record with a full-scale arena tour in the summer of 1998, issuing the concert LP Live on Two Legs at the end of the year. Posted by Ben on Thursday, 04/1/2021 @ 06:06am |

I remember Pearl Jam exploding onto the scene in 1991. Another group from Seattle. They must have something in the Washington water. I was in High School and it was something interesting. The lyrics weren't your typical "get drunk" or "get some loving". They were highly intelligent and well-thought out. Eddie Vedder sang with an intense baritone. I didn't fall in love with his voice but respected it. The guitar work was beautiful and sizzling. Painting word pictures in your mind. I think most music fans around in the 1990's would place TEN somewhere in their top 1990's CD's. That Pearl Jam 1991 summer was a relentless wave of great songs "Even Flow," "Alive," "Jeremy". I remember the Jeremy video was played regularly and sometimes I could hear my Dad singing along in his baritone...Jeremy's spoken...Spoken...Jeremy's spoken. Pearl Jam sold millions of copies of TEN. Rightfully so. Excellent songs from front to back. My FAV song off TEN was Black. Incredible song. Vs. was their next CD. I think it was solid but not as good. I liked rearviewmirror and dissident and Elderly Woman...I heard a good buzz about Vitalogy the next album. Although cliche, I bought the CD the same day it was released. I think I've only done that with 3 other CD's. The Alice In Chains CD with the 3 legged dog was one. Anyway, I like Vitalogy because of it's spectrum of greatness and weirdness. Two of their best songs are on here: Better Man and Immortality. I think I read Better Man is a story about his Mother. She's trapped in this relationship but can't find another man a "better man." There seemed to be friction with Eddie and the man too. Spin the Black Circle is another good song. Very fast-paced and kind of an ode to his love of vinyl records. Corduroy was another popular song. It might be the best 1 on the album. Kind of a relentless cruncher. Usually when I play a game of Mr. Mouth, I'll put on Corduroy. I remember some illustrated drawings too. Pearl Jam returned a few years later with No Code. I really did not like the album. Smile jumped out as a possible hit. It was upbeat and had some good guitar work. Off He Goes was another song that jumped out. Kind of a cool lyrical story. It seemed Pearl Jam was experimenting here. Some years later, I listened to it and it sounded better. No Code had these picture cards with the Song and Words on the back. It was a nice creative touch. I didn't listen to any Pearl Jam for many years after No Code. They definitely were deserving of the Rock And Roll HOF. With Kurt, Layne and others singers dying young, Eddie Vedder has gained even more love and respect from music fans. They appreciate his work and love of music. Eddie Vedder has been a legend for many years now. As more rock and roll legends die out, Vedder's star will continue to burn brighter. KING Posted by KING on Thursday, 04/1/2021 @ 13:59pm |

Foo Fighters are gonna get a huge boost now that JJBA Part 6 has been announced. (FF is considered a reference to the popular manga) The Jojo and the Rock Hall theory is strong this year! Devo, Chaka Khan, and Foo Fighters! Every year, there is an act that has been referenced in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Only 1991 and 2011 are the classes that do not contain any references whatsoever. I will be covering the 2018 class. This class was Very good. It had Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, Nina Simone and the Amazing Moody Blues. The Hall proved that there can be some diversity without a Rap act. Nina Simone is a fine Jazz style singer. We. Will get to her. And of course the Moody Blues. But I will start with Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi opened the Ceremony. It wasn't their best performance but Bon Jovi is cool. Bon Jovi fits my tastes for the 80s. I wasn't a big New wave guy. Some is Ok. But Bon Jovi is someone I listened to for awhile. I will start with Bon Jovi later on. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 04/7/2021 @ 17:35pm |
I found some old notes. The notes indicate I got up to 2017 class last year. But I definitely never got to 2018. The act that opened the 2018 ceremony was Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi actually fits my tastes during the 80s. I was into quite a bit of Arena rock. Bon Jovi is a good example of this. Bon Jovi is Ok. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 04/7/2021 @ 21:41pm |

Here's my predictions on who would be inducted this year & who would be snubbed. Posted by Navonte Robertson on Thursday, 04/8/2021 @ 01:26am |
I will now continue with Bon Jovi. At the height of their Career Bon Jovi consisted of Jon Bon Jovi along with Richie Sanbora- Guitar, Alec John Such-Bass Guitar, Tico Torres-Drums and David Bryan-Keyboards. This is the most famous line up of Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi were in a huge 18 month international tour 1988-89. Bon Jovi were one of the glories of MTV in the late 80s. Bon Jovi reunited in the early 90s and Keep the Faith, was released in the fall of 1992. While the album didn't match the blockbuster status of its 80s albums, it did give them a hit with "Bed of Roses." Keep the Faith was a big hit too and around that time grunge took a hold. I was not a big grunge. I started listening to some Pearl Jam but kept listening to Bon Jovi and other bands like that. I listened to Extreme at that time. Extreme had a couple albums. A greatest-hits album for Bon Jovi called Cross Road appeared in 1994 and yielded another Top Ten ballad, "Always." Around the same time, bassist Alec John Such left the group; Hugh McDonald, who appeared on Bon Jovi recordings stretching back as far as "Runaway," became his unofficial replacement and featured prominently on the band's next album. Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits is the only album I have from Bon Jovi. After appearing in the 1996 film Moonlight and Valentino, Jon Bon Jovi released his first official solo album, Destination Anywhere, in the summer of 1997. Posted by Ben on Thursday, 04/8/2021 @ 04:52am |
Bon Jovi was the first induction of the 2018. Howard Stern inducted Bon Jovi, Hey Howard had Bon Jovi on his show many times. Stern talks about his love of all of this year's inductees. He then expressed great gratitude to musicians for putting a smile on his face. "The dream has been realized." Stern got the crowd to sing Wanted Dead or Alive. Everyone in the band gave their acceptance speeches Jon Bon Jovi gave a rather long speech. Bon Jovi performed You Give Love a Bad Name, It's My Life and Livin on a Prayer. It wasn't the best performance Bon Jovi ever gave but they were now in the Hall. Coming up is 2 bands of the 80s I like even more than Bon Jovi. Coming up is Dire Straits and the Cars. The legends of the Ceremony are later. Ohh i disregard the HBO line up of acts. HBO re arranged it. I go by how the Ceremony went live. Stay tuned Posted by ben on Thursday, 04/8/2021 @ 05:13am |

Up next is the Dire Straits. Dire Straits are a great band. They were another act overdue by 2018. The key line up for Dire Straits was the legendary Marc Knopfler, John Ilsey-Bass, Pick Withers-Drums and later on came Guy Fletcher-Keyboards. I was into the Dire Straits from just about the beginning. of their career. Posted by Ben on Friday, 04/9/2021 @ 04:49am |

The next inductee for 2018is Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She was inducted as an Early influence. This proves 2 things. It proves the Early Influence category is alive and also that's its used generally for the acts of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Posted by Ben on Saturday, 04/10/2021 @ 05:02am |

I'm glad to hear that my series remains excellent. I look forward to reviews of 2018 acts from K-Dawg. I'm now up to the Cars. The Cars were inducted into the RR Hall of Fame in 2018. I'm back to performers. The Cars are very deserved for the Hall. They were slightly overdue. They were in fact nominated twice before. They are one of my favorite bands from the 80s. They were the most successful American New Wave band of the late 70s and the 80s. They were on Rock radio a lot. They are one of the most famous bands from Boston. Posted by Ben on Sunday, 04/11/2021 @ 05:18am |
I have a little more on the Cars. Some of my favorites from the Cars are My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love. Moving in Stereo, Let's Go, Candy-O, Dangerous Type, Shake It Up, I'm Not the One, You Might Think, Magic and Stranger's Eyes. Those are all cool tunes. I got into my 20s in the 80s so I know every key song by the Cars. Believe it or Not they released a new album in 2011. After that they were in hibernation. Their only activity was the 2015 and 2016 nominations. They were inducted in 2018. The Cars were inducted by Brandon Flowers of the Killers. The Cars perform My Best Friend's Girl, You Might Think, Moving in Stereo and Just What I needed. The Cars are a key band of the 80s. They deserve to be inducted. That's it on the Cars. I now come to Nina Simone. the Next Inductee for the 2018 Ceremony. She was the next Segment at the 2018 Ceremony. She brought extra diversity to this class. I like her music. She is known a lot for Jazz, Blues and Soul. Nina Simone was inducted as a Regular performer. and since she rose to fame in the 1960s.it makes sense. Nina Simone came out of nowhere with a nomination in late 2017. I did Not predict her to be inducted when she was on the ballot. I figured there would not be 2 60s/early 70s acts at the same time. We knew the Moody Blues would be one but a lot of us didn't expect a 2nd act from that earlier time. Her induction was a complete surprise to me. She certainly deserves the induction. I have seen a youtube video of Ms. Tharpe playing in England outdoors at a train station. She has this big electric guitar on & she is playing the absolute crap out of it, all while belting out a tune. Dressed like she was going to church. Video in black & white. I now come to the Headliners for the 2018 Ceremony. It's the Moody Blues! I waited years for the Moody Blues to be inducted. I predicted them every year on this site until they were finally nominated and Inducted. . That moment came with the 2018 class. The Committee realized they could not hold them back anymore. They are one of my favorite groups of all time. Even my father knew I loved the Moody Blues. I played them for him when I was a teenager. My Father's favorite music was always Classical music. My Father was intrigued by the mix of Classical and Rock. On his own he'd heard the name along with lots of other key Rock groups. My Father grew up in the 1940's so he did Not know much about Rock music. I told my Father in early 2018 that the Moody Blues were inducted into the RR Hall of Fame. He knew I followed the Hall a lot. 2018 Ceremony was the last Ceremony he was live. He died a few months later. The Moody Blues are in my Top 10 of favorite acts. I will continue with the Moody Blues. I'm going to continue their history with the beginning of the 1970's. From their album To Our Children's Children's Children -- only one song, the guitar-driven "Gypsy," ever worked on-stage. Beginning with A Question of Balance (1970), the group specifically recorded songs in arrangements that they could play in concert, stripping down their sound a bit They were able to do most of that album and their next record, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, on-stage, with impressive results. By that time, all five members of the band were composing songs, and each had his own identity, Pinder the impassioned mystic, Lodge the rocker, Edge the poet, Thomas the playful mystic, and Hayward the romantic -- all had contributed significantly to their repertoire, though Hayward tended to have the biggest share of the group's hits, and his songs often occupied the lead-off spot on their albums. Maybe more watchers are starting to realize both the kiosk and fan ballot are rigged, which was ruined by out of touch idiots who hate their own costumers like how Disney hates the Star Wars fanbase despite owning the rights of the IP. The next class will be another commercial failure like the last one and boycotts will continued to be successful. So as I continue I will say that the Seventh Sojourn is another great album from the Moody Blues. I like slightly more than Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. Seventh Sojourn had more of an edge with New Horizons, For My Lady and Isn't Life Strange, And of course there is one of the most Hard Rockin songs they ever had, Singer in a Rock n'Roll Band. There was a retrospective called This is the Moody Blues that sold extremely Well. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 04/13/2021 @ 15:00pm |

Foo Fighters the last great rock n roll band? Who thought up that idiotic title? They're a great band for sure, but rock has endured well beyond the 25 years since their debut immensely with new bands and othe factors Posted by K-Dawg on Thursday, 04/15/2021 @ 16:15pm |
Yes, let us forget about the garage rock revival of the 2000s and the prominent indie rock scene like The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes, etc. People act like rock died in the 2000s, but they themselves are trying to revise music history by continuing that statement. I keep forgetting the voters are as lazy if not worse than Academy Award voters because wow the voters I'm seeing can't make up their damn mind. Eddie Trunk and critics of the Rock Hall have some serious hypocrisy going on lately. They hate the Hall, yet still vote what gives? Posted by Plebian on Thursday, 04/15/2021 @ 16:47pm |
Y'all can blame Gene Simmons for dubbing FF as the "last great rock band." While not all of them from the 2000's are Hall Material, but there are a lot of great and important bands that came after Foo Fighters; Deftones, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Queens of The Stone Age, the White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Storkes, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, LCD Soundsystem, Bring Me The Horizon, Babymetal, Killswitch Engage and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs are a must for an induction years from now. The "rock is dead" statement is nothing but a meme and also a cliche used in journalism since either the late 60's or 70's. Posted by The Dude on Thursday, 04/15/2021 @ 17:15pm |

I do not think that I will never understand rock music critics. I have always felt that most of the time what they happen to like has always been the antithesis of what I like, so 'never the twain shall meet, or so to speak.' So, then back in early 1967, in the United Kingdom, The Beatles were working on their conceptual psychedelic masterpiece, "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band." Meanwhile, the original Pink Floyd had been creating some very strange psychedelic tunes on their debut album, "The Piper At the Gates Of Dawn.' Meanwhile, out of this strange cauldron of psychedelia, in California in the United States, arose proto- progressive artists such as: Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and The Doors. However, most astonishing was what would come next, the birth of an entirely new musical genre which would marry baroque and classical music with jazz and rock and roll and this came about almost purely by accident. In the summer of 1967. Posted by Enigmaticus on Sunday, 04/18/2021 @ 22:03pm |
Enigmaticus, I think we also need to give some credit to the short lived but precocius group of young men known as The Left Banke who released the "Baroque & Roll" classic Walk Away Renée in the summer of 1966 quickly followed by Pretty Ballerina. Anybody into this kind of music should check out their exquisite album Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina released in early 1967. Posted by joker on Sunday, 04/18/2021 @ 22:22pm |

So, what gave some of these artists the impetus to combine such strange sounds together? Three little letters-L.S.D. L.S.D. had first been synthesized by Swiss Chemist Albert Hofmann back in 1938, from ergot-a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. It is a hallucinogen and had been widely used by several "mind-expanding" rock musicians during the early to mid 1960's. Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 04/19/2021 @ 09:21am |
So, then let's now go back to the autumn of 1966 and examine those artists and songs which would help to inspire and often create the greatest genre of rock music ever known to mankind- progressive rock. Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 04/19/2021 @ 10:16am |
I think the history is terrific so far I like Prog Rock a lot more than Pure Psychedelic music. The Psychedelic era was pretty much over by 1969. But Prog has had a longevity that has lasted several decades. Autumn of 1966 was an important time for the Creation of a terrific genre. My Favorite band it all time is actually The Who. The Who released A Quick One. That was definitely heading In that direction. And Frank Zappa was emerging with interesting music at that time. I will NOT mention other names. I know where you are headed. Continue when you can. Posted by Ben on Monday, 04/19/2021 @ 12:33pm |
A quick thought on the Moody Blues. They were not part of my classic rock experience early. I never thought of them as such; their music seemed to be very melodic and hauntingly slow. That said, I was introduced to them, like much of the non-mainstream rock stuff in the 80s, by my aunt, one of a few relatives who loved "niche" stuff. "Nights In White Satin" is not a song you can bang your head to, but it is great in composition and a lyrical masterpiece. Its bigger album, Days of Future Past, also has what I consider my second favorite MB song after "Your Wildest Dreams", "Tuesday Afternoon". Definitely a pioneer of innovation and influence. I do see them as a direct sister act to Jethro Tull, who does belong without a doubt, although there are glaring omissions all over the place. Posted by K Dawg on Monday, 04/19/2021 @ 16:07pm |

never have i seen someone so offended that a second-tier hair metal band didn't get nominated for something Posted by disco volante on Thursday, 04/22/2021 @ 15:01pm |
"second tier hair band"? If you don't understand the significance of Motley Crue, that is your loss. They were one of the most recognizable faces of the 80s metal scene. They routinely scored top 10 hits and MTV gave the metal and headbangers genre a sizable audience that grew and grew. They definitely belong in the RRHOF far more than some of the 8th tier 70s bands that classic rock purists scream should be there because they can name 2 of their songs. Posted by K Dawg on Friday, 04/23/2021 @ 00:22am |
Motley Crue, for better or worse, does have a case for the Hall. Unfortunately, my opinion has been soured about them because a particular SOMEBODY won't shut up about them to the point of irritation. Posted by Plebian on Friday, 04/23/2021 @ 02:24am |

Once Motley Crue get inducted that would likely wrap up 80's Glam Metal. There's not that many others that have a strong case. maybe Poison and Twisted Sister but I don't think the cases are as strong as Motley Crue. Posted by Greg F on Friday, 04/23/2021 @ 13:22pm |

My final predictions Posted by Greg F on Friday, 04/23/2021 @ 16:39pm |
I will now slide right into an Intro for the 2019 class. This Ceremony was the last under NORMAL conditions. Stevie Nicks opened the CEREMONY. I think Stevie Nicks is cool. She was one of the more Conventional acts. For lack of a better word. I think conventional is a good word. King already have a Nice Write up on Radiohead. I think I myself have personall experienced the Radiohead effect. Back in the 90s I only knew Creep. I had a Folk and Jazz phase in the later 90s. So I missed the boat with Radiohead. I've realized that error and have checked a bunch of Radiohead music the last several years. I checked out OK COMPUTER. But it's Stevie Nicks that opened the 2019 Ceremony. I will cover Stevie Nicks later. That's it for now Posted by Ben on Friday, 04/23/2021 @ 18:57pm |

I was much more excited about the induction of Fleetwood Mac in 1998. But Stevie Nicks does have sown decent solo stuff. Coming after the fine class of 2018 especially with the triumph of the Moody Biues induction, the Hall wanted to go in a different direction. More 80s and 90s acts than ever were Nominated. Just look at the nominees for 2019. I don't want to name them all. Posted by Ben on Saturday, 04/24/2021 @ 08:12am |

Conceived by Paul McCartney and the late George Martin, 'Eleanor Rigby' had featured a double string quartet with 4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. Not a single member of The Beatles had played a single instrument on the song. However, the late John Lennon and the late George Harrison did provide harmony vocals. Of course, the subject matter of 'Eleanor Rigby' had been about loneliness. Posted by Enigmaticus on Sunday, 04/25/2021 @ 06:12am |

The second induction of the 2019 Ceremony was Radiohead. I will do this segment from the perspective of a 1970s and 80s guy. Those are the eras I grew up with. When Radiohead rose to fame I was NOT listening to much Rock anymore. In the Late 90s I was listening to a lot of Folk and Jazz. People like Shawn Colvin, Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown and Weather Report come to mind just to name a few. Posted by Ben on Sunday, 04/25/2021 @ 11:38am |

I am 2 years behind everyone else here. Radiohead are very deserved for Induction In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They became a milestone for everything that is fearless and adventurous In Rock, inheriting the throne from David Bowie, Pink Floyd and the Talking Heads. Back in the 1990s the only song I knew was Creep. It was treated as one moment of success in 1993. The Talking Heads song Radiohead from True Stories gave them their name. I will continue with Radiohead. In Oct. 2000 Kid A was released. It became their first number one album In America. Hail To the Thief appeared in June 2003. It was also a huge album. I've heard of these titles but I have not heard the music on them. I should check it out. Also, the group played live dates culminating with a Headliner show at the 2004,Coachella festival. There was an album In Rainbows that moved over a million downloads on its first day of release in Oct 2007. It was physically released in late 2007. Other albums followed. So, I fully acknowledge that this is waaaay premature, but something that was on my mind was how my predicted 2021 Inductees would influence the possible 2022 ballot. To reiterate, my prediction for this year's class is: Posted by RG on Tuesday, 04/27/2021 @ 21:02pm |

So, now let's discuss 'Good Vibrations' and it's impact on the nascent "proto-prog" scene. Of course, I would be remiss if I had not mentioned the contributions of such groups as: The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors, also. Posted by Enigmaticus on Wednesday, 04/28/2021 @ 10:06am |
The Next Inductee is Roxy Music. Roxy Music had a fascination with Fashion, Glamour and Pop art. During the early 70s they were led by both Bryan Ferry and Bryan Eno. This version of Roxy Music only recorded 2 albums. But they influenced a lot of Glam Rockers In the early 70s. They were Not truly Prog Rock. Perhaps a little later on. I am NOT a huge fan. I know about their influence and success in the 70s.They wee a left field choice for the Hall. A lot of keys 70s rock acts have been Inducted long ago. Roxy Music is part of the big Back log. I'll be having a Roxy Music segment Now. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 04/28/2021 @ 12:09pm |

Roxy Music did very well in England and Europe but virtually ignored in the U.S. Brian Eno was in the band but left the band. Released in Dec. 1973 ,Stranded became the band's first number one album in the U.K. The album Stranded received better attention in the US than its 2 predecessors setting the stage for the breakthrough of Country Life in late 1974. I want Everyone to know I am NOT a fan of Janet Jackson. I don't recall ever sitting at Home listening to her. She's NOT my thing. But this a chance to prove that even though I don't like Janet J she is deserved for Induction anyway. I do feel her career was given a big boost by Michael and his success. I do think Michael Jackson is more deserved for sure to be an inductee. But nonetheless, Janet the sister has her place. Starting with her 1986 album, Control, she became one of the biggest Pop stars of the 80s. Through the early 2000's she was able to maintain her stardom with Full control. Janet Jackson is a determined Taurean singer, dancer, and performer who has been around music her entire life. Her RRHOF Induction was a great moment. I first remember Janet Jackson during her smash success Control in the mid 1980's. It was an empowering album. Taking "Control" of one's life. Janet was taking Control of her life at only 20. Many hit songs. "Nasty" was the 1st song I remember. My sister liked to dance to the Jackson beats and Madonna too. There's interesting conversation how influential Michael Jackson was on her career. My prevailing wisdom that the Jackson name helped her in the beginning. I think Jackson paved her own way and still is 1 of the most successful music artists of all-time. She paved away for many of the sing and dance bands that exploded in the 1990's. Posted by KING on Saturday, 05/1/2021 @ 07:24am |

Up Next is the Cure. It's another act that's Not my thing Man. But I stated 2 years ago that they are Deserved for the Hall. The problem for me with them is I was Never a big New Wave/80s Alternative fan. I spent the Late 70s and All of the 1980s listening to Regular Standard Album Rock stations. We all know those, But, having said that the thing in the same way I got very excited when for instance Jefferson Airplane, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, B Traffic and of Course Yes and the Moody Blues were inducted. Readers of PROG Magazine had referred to the Grateful Dead as being a prog band. I do not know about the validity of that particular statement, but The Grateful Dead do have at least one album which fits into the prog category: " Terrapin Station." The title track definitely makes the case for The Grateful Dead having progressive aspirations at the time, since it had been released in 1977. Posted by Enigmaticus on Sunday, 05/2/2021 @ 13:04pm |

I wouldn't sleep on Todd Rundgren, guys. Sure, he didn't get in the last two years, but on both of those ballots he had a lot more direct competition from other mainline classic rock acts from the 60s and 70s. This year, not as much. New York Dolls are obviously there, but they are in much more of an alternative niche, and Devo falls more into the post-punk category, but that's about it. Not to mention how well connected Rundgren is within the classic rock community. The Hall may be changing, but a large portion of the voting body is still made up of classic rock guys who will be very receptive to Todd Rundgren's candidacy, especially when there isn't an artist like The Doobie Brothers to split votes away. And I think Todd's hostility towards the Hall as an institution will only matter among the few voters who pay the absolute most attention to the process, not among the many voters who are just voting on whether or not they think the artist deserves recognition. Hey maybe it's Robert Smith's hair. However, I predicted them for induction in 2019. Out of all the bands that emerged in the early 80s, few were as enduring and popular. as the Cure. I'm Not into their slow, gloomy dirges. I have no Problem with them in the Hall. They've been around a long time. They are deserved for induction in the Hall. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 05/4/2021 @ 05:29am |
Yeah so after The Cure segment it was Janet Jackson. As a matter of fact I prefer the Pop of Janet Jackson to the Cure slightly more. I would have enjoyed a performance of Janet somewhat. It would have been a somewhat conventional performance. True I like some Left field acts but the Cure was always too left field to me. This indicates some support for Pop in the Hall. I did Not have a problem with Madonna inducted into the Hall. But Tina Turner should have been inducted just shortly after Madonna. And also I love Tina Turner. You get the picture. So I'm discussing extra stuff on Janet J. K Dawg is more knowledgable on Janet, He should definitely chronicle Her career if he has time. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 05/4/2021 @ 08:09am |

Things will pick up for the 2019 with the Zombies. The Zombies were great. The Zombies are Next, And that's Now. The Zombies were one of the bands of the original British Invasion back in the 1960s. Obviously there was the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who. All Inducted very early. Along the Animals and Dave Clark Five have been inducted, For some reason the Zombies got left behind. It says a lot that a 60s band can be Inducted even in 2019. The Zombies are one of my favorite bands of the old British Invasion. I think they were nominated 3 or 4 times and got Inducted. That makes sense with all the 1970s,80s and even 90s Bands getting Inducted recently. I first knew the Zombies when I was around 7or 8 years old. She's Not There and Tell Her No were still played a lot on AM radio. This was about 7 years after these hits were huge. but Am was still cranking. Nobody Other than the Beatles, the Beach Boys and perhaps the Byrds Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 05/5/2021 @ 06:12am |
I continue with the Zombies. By 1967, the group hadn't had a hit for quite some time, and reckoned it was time to pack it in. Their Decca contract expired early in the year, and the Zombies signed with CBS for one last album, knowing before the sessions that it was to be their last. A limited budget reduced the use of many session musicians, which actually worked to the Zombies' advantage, as they became among the first to utilize the Mellotron to simulate strings and horns. There is that Mellotron use in the 1960s once again. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 05/5/2021 @ 08:32am |

I'll dive more into them soon, but my best exposure to def leppard is their even bigger successor to Pyromania. Hysteria is one of the most legendary albums ever produced in my opinion, and was their definite apex before their decline. They are still one of the greatest, but as the 90s shifted away from glam rock and tge image, Leppard faltered a bit. Their evolving style was notable and respectable, but they were never again the juggernauts they had become in the 80s Posted by K-Dawg on Thursday, 05/6/2021 @ 11:09am |

So the time has finally come for the Rock Hall to pick their 5-6 (or 7) inductees for the class of 2021. Posted by Timothy Pernell on Thursday, 05/6/2021 @ 17:35pm |
Ok. I will continue with Details on Def Leppard. Def Leppard's future looked very shaky without a drummer, but by the spring of 1985 -- just a few months after his accident -- Allen began learning to play a custom-made electronic kit assembled for him. The band soon resumed recording, and within a few months, Lange was back on board; having judged all the existing tapes inferior, he ordered the band to begin work all over again. Recording sessions continued throughout 1986, and that summer, the group returned to the stage for the European Monsters of Rock tour. Def Leppard finally completed their fourth album, now titled Hysteria, early in 1987. The record was released that Summer to lukewarm reviews, with many critics claiming that the album compromised Leppard's metal roots for sweet pop flourishes. Accordingly, Hysteria was slow rising up the charts-- "Women," the first single, failed to really take hold -- but the release of "Animal" helped the album gather steam. The song became Def Leppard's first Top 40 hit in the U.K., but more importantly, it launched a string of six straight Top 20 hits in the U.S., which also included "Hysteria," "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Love Bites," "Armageddon It," and "Rocket," that last hit which arrived in 1989, a full two years after the release of Hysteria. During those two years, Def Leppard was everywhere. They were the kings of Pop metal, ruling the charts and MTV. People imitated their teased hair. I liked a bit of Hair Rock/Metal at the time. Foo Fighters really just tanking with the writers' (and other industry related people's) vote. They're likely going to be at such a disadvantage there that they will need to absolutely kill it with inductees of rock bands to get over the hurdle...and I'm just not so sure about that happening. Being a younger act tends to be a detriment for inductees who want to get in their own influences and peers. Posted by Casper on Friday, 05/7/2021 @ 21:52pm |

Really, it's only Devo from the second half of Roy's list - the bottom 8 - that I can see as actually being competitive overall (not counting Foo Fighters, of course). They're an older rock act with a lot of respect (Rage is younger, failed to get in before and is hard rock adjacent). The other six names just flat out don't have widespread appeal among guitar band inductees. Posted by Casper on Friday, 05/7/2021 @ 22:01pm |

Where is the "prog?" For those who have been looking forward to nominations for: Procol Harum, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Duran Duran and others, it certainly must be a rather confusing and disappointing time. For some reason, Todd Rundgren's solo work, in addition to his work with his band Utopia, does not really satisfy our prog wanderlust. No, we really need bands like Supertramp, Kansas and Styx to at least receive a nomination in the not too distant future to appease us. Even so, last year the "prog" train had unfortunately been derailed. Prior to that time however, we had experienced the induction of the "holy trinity" of prog (Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues) and all was seemingly well, in progdom. Now, however we do have an alternative- Kate Bush who has appeared on numerous issues of PROG Magazine over the past 12 years and is a very deserving artist in her own right. If Dionne makes it (which I hope), then don't be surprised if she had the most votes on the voting body, since she's technically the oldest eligible nominated who had been snubbed for a long time. That's how Nina Simone, The Zombies, and T. Rex (originally started off as a psychedelic folk band) made it. The 60's still inducts the 60's. Maybe there's still hope for the Monkees and many others from that era. Posted by The Dude on Monday, 05/10/2021 @ 20:17pm |

Iron Maiden should vacuum up all the votes from Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Guns N Roses, Journey, KISS, Metallica, Rush, Van Halen, etc. I'm not counting them out. Over the last few years, the Voting Group has ballooned to 1,000+ voters. I will be interested how it shakes out. KING Posted by KING on Monday, 05/10/2021 @ 21:38pm |
Can anyone describe why Glam Rock for some reason is getting a lot of love from the Rock Hall lately? Like I love the genre, but I don't know why their going for it specifically now. It does seem that track records of past Glam Rock acts are getting in right away. Lou Reed, Roxy Music, T. Rex, and even the New York Dolls are got/getting a ton of support. Is it because they are a good balance of love between critics and the audience? Posted by Plebeian on Monday, 05/10/2021 @ 21:42pm |
Cause Bon Jovi is the catalyst for the glam. Both 70's and 80's, which led to Def Leppard and Roxy Music in 2019 and T. Rex in 2020, and maybe New York Dolls for this year. Posted by The Dude on Monday, 05/10/2021 @ 21:48pm |

I just want to say I don't totally rule out Dionne Warwick. But I'm not confident enough in her for my Predictions. I think Carole King has the edge over her due to Tapestry. I would not be both inducted at the same time. They are both Very melodic mellow singers. It's like richie said Carole King has gotten nearly every Lifetime Achievement Award for years. I forgot that until richie said it. But I was thinking of Tapestry. Dionne Warwick doesn't have a landmark album of that magnitude. Tapestry was # 1 for most of 1971 and it was one of the most widely known album of the 1970s. I am Not even that huge a Carole King fan. My fiancee loves her more. But I acknowledge the importance of Tapestry. And I know she has other solo hits like Jazzman. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 04:06am |

OK, folks. Here are my predictions for the SEVEN inductees I think are getting the Call to the Hall. Posted by Johnny on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 08:54am |
Roy I don't see a ballot like that ever happening because there isn't many acts that would be a draw for a ceremony. However some of them could trickle in like King Crimson, The Monkees, Foreigner, Jethro Tull, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, Willie Nelson, The Spinners, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, The Shangri-La's, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Ben E. King. The rest have minimal chances at get on a ballot. Posted by Greg F on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 09:25am |
Where is the "prog?" For those who have been looking forward to nominations for: Procol Harum, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Duran Duran and others, it certainly must be a rather confusing and disappointing time. For some reason, Todd Rundgren's solo work, in addition to his work with his band Utopia, does not really satisfy our prog appetites. No, we really need bands like Supertramp, Kansas and Styx to at least receive a nomination in the not too distant future to appease us. Even so, last year the "prog" train had unfortunately been derailed. Prior to that time however, we had experienced the induction of the "holy trinity" of prog (Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues) and Radiohead, Roxy Music and The Zombies. All was seemingly well, in progdom. Now, however we do have an alternative- Kate Bush who has appeared on numerous issues of PROG Magazine over the past 12 years and is a very deserving artist in her own right. My final predictions for this year's inductees: Posted by Michael W on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 09:55am |
I think people are sleeping on Iron Maiden's chances. Sure, they may not have tons of songs that most people can name off the top of their heads, but John Q. Public isn't apart of the voting body. These are people that either are musicians or whose work is heavily involved within music. Maybe you can't name more than 5 Iron Maiden songs, but if you think of the heavy metal genre, is Iron Maiden one of the first 3 names to come to mind? I think they are. And my post is completely downplaying their popularity, by the way. There's a reason Iron Maiden has always been consistently high in the fan kiosk and the fan vote. Their lane is clear and I think they have a strong chance. Will people really be thinking that they NEED to get Foo Fighters in before an act like Iron Maiden? Posted by Steve Z on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 10:40am |
I forgot what some of the feelings are with the Go-Gos. They are fine. It's the kind of 80s New Wave band I liked. They were a rock type band. They were a bit on the Bubblegum side. But they were melodic. That's very cool. It's another bunch of females for this year. I do NOT expect an all female class. Let's Not get crazy. BUT the Go-Gos together with Carole King and Tina I expect will be the Females this year. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 10:40am |
People like to blast Eddie Trunk because he's a "Rawkist" but I actually think he's a necessary public voice to have in the body, as metal really is doing atrociously. They need an advocate to really push hard for them. Posted by Steve Z on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 10:43am |
It's fine to have your point of view like he does. What's not ok is the throngs of seemingly brain dead old boomers who type their favorite one to three hit wonder from terrestrial radio that gets played 5 times an hour in all caps and just cannot seem to comprehend why Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin or Tupac are in and why each member of Kiss hasn't been inducted for their solo careers yet... Posted by K Dawg on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 11:21am |
As far as the Iron Maiden chances go, I like what you're sayings, Steve Z. However, I know the trends (and it's always dangerous to assume any form of consistency from this voting body), and if they hold true to any previous form, they will go with the more mainstream choices to maximize their view of where the revenue and spotlight should come from. I think Maiden is far more influential on the 80s metal scene than Metallica even was (someone is going to scream until their eyes bleed when they read that statement), but the Hall rarely does things in the proper order... At what time will the inductees be announced tomorrow? Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 13:21pm |
I will be glad this season be over. I can only handle so many hot takes about the Hall and their decisions. The New York Dolls probably will be the most exciting pick. They have the lowest Spotify listeners, yet manage to pull it off. In a world world where music streaming matters, The New York Dolls show that influence can make a difference Their inclusion can help MC5 as the two plus The Stooges complete the trifecta of Porto-punk. Iron Maiden getting in would be a godsend. Then again Heavy Metal gets as much respect as Electronic: almost none. Let's hope it's seven this year! Follower, you're right, Dennis Stratton is alive. I apologize. (I looked him up on Wikipedia, noticed he was alive, and still put him as dead. Maybe all that Iron Maiden music did something to my brain.) Posted by Joe on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 13:54pm |

So I will now Elaborate on Iron Maiden. I was getting into the day early. Too early to think about a Heavy band like Iron Maiden. I have some experience with Iron Maiden. I know Piece of Mind and some POWERSLAVE. I own some tunes of theirs. Just last week I was playing 2 Minutes to Midnight on my I phone. POWERSLAVE was an Important album in 1984. It literally is. I've been intrigued by our Own IMPORTANT albums list on this Site. Maiden is my No Guts No Glory prediction. This is the heavy Rock I know something about. Judas Priest failed because of too much completion. Soo a new approach is to have Maiden stand alone. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 14:35pm |
Been checking this site pretty regularly today. Anxious to find out the results. Some good comments on here. Posted by rem on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 15:27pm |

Eddie Trunk is hinting at Randy Rhoads being announced as a sideman inductee into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame tomorrow. Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 22:36pm |

An induction for Randy Rhodes would almost make up for Early Influence Kraftwerk. Posted by Follower on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 22:37pm |
The Rock Hall will lose all credibility if they induct Kraftwerk as Early Influence! It ain't happening! Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 22:41pm |

Fellas, Eddie could be talking about the New York Dolls (possibly) being inducted into the Hall. Remember...Johnny Thunders, the Dolls' lead guitarist, passed away in 1991. Posted by Johnny on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 22:56pm |
Yeah, I agree with Johnny. This could very well be hinting at a New York Dolls induction with Thunders and Sylvain both having passed away. The only other deceased guitarist of the nominees would be Bob Casale of Devo, but I don't think Trunk would be getting all excited over them. Posted by Steve Z on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:03pm |
My only hope is...and I'm sorry if I sound selfish for saying this...that a New York Dolls induction is still NOT bad news for Iron Maiden. I'm rooting really hard for Iron Maiden to get the Call to the Hall. Posted by Johnny on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:06pm |
Yeah, I might agree with Steve Z that Randy Rhodes might be inducted because based on the wording on Eddie Trunks' tweet, he included the word "influential". Because just by looking at the ballot, I don't think there's any nominee that has a Hendrix-level influential guitar player besides Tom Morello. Posted by John R.C. on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:08pm |
It's midnight in Cleveland. Has Casper found anything? Posted by Follower on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:08pm |
I think I've got something, Follower. And I know I said I wasn't gonna do leak stuff, but it turns out I have work tomorrow morning so I don't have time to listen to a podcast. Posted by RG on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:23pm |
Randy Rhoads induction would be awesome and that he could add that Heavy Metal support. Almost makes up Iron Maiden. Almost. Posted by Plebeian on Tuesday, 05/11/2021 @ 23:47pm |
RG, Some good detective work. That still doesn't give Maiden/Rundgren/Warwick, who have come out as fan sympathy votes, much hope. Posted by K Dawg on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 00:08am |
@RG Posted by John R.C. on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 00:10am |

Roy, Posted by K Dawg on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 01:28am |
I'm bummed that we have two new members of the Fan Vote 7*. Fela should have been inducted just because of the Nigerian campaign. I guess it's good that Tina overthrew him in the end, though. Posted by Follower on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 01:35am |
Wonder if Eddie is hinting at a Link Wray early influence induction? Posted by Anon on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 01:40am |
I was out for the night so wasn't trying any methods. Definitely can't replicate what RG says they have found...interestingly, only LL Cool J would be a surprise from RG's list as those other five names are the five most expected to get in this year. Posted by Casper on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 04:35am |
If that's the list, that's great! It would be the first time two rappers got inducted at the same time!!! And the first time THREE female acts were inducted at the same time. Posted by Timothy Pernell on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 05:05am |
Foo Fighters Posted by Living Stone on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 06:59am |
Ohhh Ok. That's the list.2021 Inductees are announced. I expected and predicted a few like Foo Fighters, The Go-Gos and of course Tina Turner. LL Cool J is a mistake. How did that mistake happen? Well there it is Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 07:30am |
Performer Category: Posted by Jon on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 08:43am |
And as a few of you already mentioned, it's a bit sad to see Foo Fighters get in before several other alternative acts who are far better and also earlier in the evolution. The Smiths, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins and Joy Division / New Order to name a few. Posted by Jon on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 08:47am |
If I'm reading it right, the inductees are exactly who I picked. Posted by K Dawg on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 09:08am |
Well, it's good to see that The Go-gos, Carole King and Tina Turner had finally received well- deserved inductions. So, a gain of 5 women is a good thing, but inducting Foo Fighters and Jay Z, clearly places the balance in favor of the men, once again. I still think that Todd Rundgren should have been given the Musical Excellence award, instead of being inducted as a performer. That would have left room for the possible inductions of Kate Bush and Dionne Warwick. Whatever. Why induct Kraftwerk as an early influence? Why not place them on the ballot as a performer again this year? Why induct LL Cool J for Musical Excellence, instead of re-nominating him again, next year? If they were going to do that, then why not put Chic in, instead? After all, Chic had been nominated 11 times to no avail. If anything, this is a bold statement that the Rock Hall does not have to answer to anyone! Posted by Enigmaticus on Wednesday, 05/12/2021 @ 09:59am |
