He's not actually a songwriters hall of fame inductee. They gave him a special award. The 2008 Hal David Starlight Award.

Named after our esteemed Chairman/CEO, this prestigious award was established to honor gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs. Past awardees include Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, John Rzeznik and Jason Mraz.

They could still actually be inducted in the future.

They Stand for everything Rock and Roll IS NOT about, abandoning their integrity to be a boy band. I would rather see Asking Alexandria get it (they may suck, but at least they made it based on THEIR ideas and not what labels wanted them to do. and even they are better sounding.)

Friday, April 25 to Saturday, April 26, 1997 was Grad Night in Walt Disney World (Orlando, Florida). Departure from my high school by bus at 4PM on the 25th, and back in Fort Lauderdale at 8:30AM on the 26th. It took 5 buses to fit our whole class.

Performances by the Goo Goo Dolls, David Lee Murphy, Aaliyah and Az Yet, on four separate stages. Their playlists were repeated three times between 9PM and 3AM. The Goo Goo Dolls performed "Name" one of our class songs (for my high school). The performances were filmed and I am hoping they will show up on YouTube someday. I don't remember which other songs they performed.

Actually, the 97 Disney Grad Night concerts had two, not four stages: one for Goo Goo Dolls and David Lee Murphy, and one for Aaliyah and Az Yet, and it was from 11PM to 5AM.

They don't deserve induction. Not that big of a deal in my opinion. They've been down to a duo since 2014. Their induction would probably not include any of their drummers. John Rzeznik and Robby Takac treated their two official drummers (George Tutuska and Mike Malinin) like crap. "Name" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and one of my high school class songs. George Tutuska was the drummer on Name, but it was drummer Mike Malinin in the music video for Name.

Tutuska played drums with the Goo Goo Dolls from 1985 to 1994, and parted from the band due to disputes with long-time friend and singer/guitarist John Rzeznik. His departure came only a few months before the release of their breakthrough album, A Boy Named Goo. In December 1994, he was fired over a non-payment dispute for his contribution to the writing of the Superstar Car Wash single "Fallin' Down".

During the completion of A Boy Named Goo, Tutuska had told band management that he wouldn't tour behind the album unless royalties were to be split evenly among the three members, a practice Tutuska claimed the band had engaged in since the release of their 1987 self-titled debut. Tutuska had been alarmed by rumors that Rzeznik was hoarding royalties for "Fallin' Down":

"I said, 'John, I'm kinda interested. I talk to friends all over the country and everyone tells me they hear ["Fallin' Down"] on the radio,' and I said, 'John, I haven't gotten one [royalty] check for that.' And he said, 'I got a confession to make. I've been getting checks for the last two years on this song.' And obviously, at that point, the shit hit the fan."

Just shy of A Boy Named Goo's release, Tutuska was formally fired from the band by Rzeznik, and replaced by Mike Malinin. Tutuska has been quoted as stating he has no resentment toward the band's ongoing success. In a 1999 interview, Tutuska commented that "The only thing that bothers me to this very day is I never got my due as a songwriter [...] if I could give people a list of songs I wrote, I think it would shock them... A lot of the songs that had gotten airplay I'd written the lion's share of, but I had taken my third and now [Rzeznik] wanted everything." The Goo Goo Dolls had no comment on these allegations. Tutuska has subsequently received royalties for songs he co-wrote and recorded with the band.

From December 1994 until December 27, 2013, Mike played drums for the Goo Goo Dolls (but was not made an official member until 1998).

Michael Malinin filed a lawsuit against his two former bandmates over money he believes he’s entitled to. He took over from original drummer George Tutuska in 1995 and left the band in 2013 after 19 years with founding members John Rzeznik and Robby Takac.

Malinin issued his former bandmates with a lawsuit, claiming he was fired mid-tour when he took time off to see his wife Krista who was in labour with twins.

According to TMZ, the sticksman’s decision to take paternity leave had been cleared in advance but when he left, he was informed by their manager he wasn’t to return.

In the lawsuit, Malinin also alleges it was Rzeznik who wanted rid of him as their relationship had deteriorated over the years. He claims he had been receiving a third of the trio’s profits before his exit but no severance package was ever issued. He now wants his share of profits to be reinstated.

Rzeznik and Takac have not issued a statement on the situation.

If anybody deserves to be in the hall of fame , the Goo Goo Dolls does ,!!!
There true musicians , there music , there lyrics , there sound , the way JR downtunes , by far the best live act I've ever seen !!!
Iris alone , the best song ever written !!!

The Goo Goo Dolls were a cool punk rock band, but some time around 1997 they decided to change to a poppier style to chase Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind up the charts. Their success as a pop band was much bigger than their success as a punk band, but they might be the biggest sellouts this side of Sugar Ray.
Shouldn't get in, and they're unlikely to.

I love the Goo Goo Dolls. They are my absolute favorite band, have been since 1997. That said, I realize they don't necessarily have the impact, musically speaking, to get into the HoF. Yes, from about 1995 to about 2010 they were extremely popular as adult pop rock artists, and they're still touring regularly and putting out pop rock music, but the big ballads are really what they'll be remembered for, and that's not enough to get them in the HoF. And you know what? It's fine. They have their fans. They've had some big songs. They've had a solid career.
