31 comments so far (post your own)Now here's a class that may spawn some icons. First, we got Queens of the Stone Age, making original "stoner"-like rock music with a ton of critical acclaim. Bound to be influential.
We also have System of a Down...but I suppose it won't be 2023...a little longer before induction...along with Tool, Deftones, and Rage Against the Machine, they've made big contributions to a mysterious genre known as alternative metal. Still though, it might be out of place with banana terracotta pie.
The most popular choice at this moment is Lauryn Hill, but all I know about her is that one album that won grammies and her work with The Fugees so I can't make a big opinion there.
And then finally, despite being over-rated, there's no doubt that this may be a lock for Coldplay. They have been praised for creating a unique style of pop rock, though at times reusing some chord progressions (one fan even admits it but still thinks people should listen to them). They have a slump, but a decent album should send them to Cleveland permanently.

A wild card from this batch would be Muse...they're music is really picking up here in the states thanks to songs like the #2 rock hit Starlight, top 10 hit Supermassive Black Hole, and Guitar Hero III bound Knights of Cydonia.
While bands like Evanescence, Rob Zombie, and Bright Eyes may have a lot of supporters, these acts probably have not done enough to rock and are very very large longshots.

I might have agreed with you, had Bellamy not been a vocal-clone of Thom Yorke

maple, if you knew anything basic involving music, you'd realise that all coldplay do is combine anthemic and memorable hooks (see Embrace and Oasis) with whiny, loathable lyrics and vocals (see Morrissey, who Colplay somewhat blatnantly tried to clone, but failed).
Absolutely nothing inovative about them.

The biggest lock here is Coldplay, obviously.
Now let's see what else is in the class of '23.
If Muse can reach Radiohead/Coldplay-esque heights (and you know they're trying), then a Hall induction is very possible.
Lauryn Hill is already out, as one good album is not a Hall of Famer make.
Queens of the Stone Age is bound to influence several bands in the next several years, so they should be in sooner or later.
And the last big name that I can see getting in here is System of a Down, and even then, they'll probably only get in after bands like Rage Against the Machine get in.

ok. Definately Britney Spears she is the Princess of Pop and she changed pop music as a 19 year old shes still changing it abd she had the comeback of the CENTURY!!!

Quite. They are a good band. I don't know if they're HOF material yet, but they could easily become it. Keep an eye on them.
"We also have System of a Down...but I suppose it won't be 2023...a little longer before induction...along with Tool, Deftones, and Rage Against the Machine, they've made big contributions to a mysterious genre known as alternative metal. True. They do have a distinct sound, merging some of the sounds of the Middle East with alt-metal. It doesn't look like they're going to be back anytime soon, but there's still plenty of time to develop some influence. As long as RATM, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Soundgarden, Tool and Korn (and possibly Deftones) get in first then it wouldn't bother me too much if they were inducted. They do have some critical acclaim, and if it was a Hard Rock/Metal Hall of Fame they and QOTSA would both probably get in.
"The most popular choice at this moment is Lauryn Hill, but all I know about her is that one album that won grammies and her work with The Fugees so I can't make a big opinion there."
I don't even know that one album, so I can't make any judgement except that I haven't heard anything of that one album having a Nevermind the Bollocks type of impact, so I'll have to do more research on them.
"And then finally, despite being over-rated, there's no doubt that this may be a lock for Coldplay. Well, since that time they've released Viva La Vida, which topped a bunch of charts (including being their fourth straight #1 in the UK and most importantly their second straight Billboard topper) and received mostly positive reviews. I don't think they're Hall-worthy just yet, but they're in good position to be inducted, and one more commercially succesful and critically acclaimed album (with another succesful stadium-filling tour) should, barring any scandal or meltdowns, make them a lock. Hell, they might even be a lock right now; I guess we should check back in 5 years and see where they are.
Had Evanescence continued to be where they were five years ago they might've had a chance (though I never cared for them,) but although they're still around an inability to stay in the spotlight combined with an abscene of critical respect will most likely keep them out. A lack of innovation and influence, being prefabricated and a lack of support from critics will probably lock out both Destiny's Child and N'SYNC (the irony is that both the solo stars to come out of those acts are on pace to have a much better shot.)
There are two wild cards to keep an eye on here. The first is Britney. I'm serious. No, I don't like her either, but she actually does have some legitimate critical respect. She was huge for about half a decade before that meltdown, one of the biggest if not THE biggest stars on the planet. With this comeback she's picked up right where she left off, and seems to possess a staying power that her contemporaries (Jessica Simpson, The Backstreet Boys and The Spice Girls) don't. I think if she's still this big by the time she's eligible they really would consider inducting her if they thought she'd bring a crowd. The other wild card is Muse. They're a little lacking in critical respect (Bellamy's voice doesn't do them any favors, as he sounds like he's trying to rip off Radiohead.) However, they've gained quite a bit of popularity in the US, so I reccomend keeping an eye on them.

"ok. Definately Britney Spears she is the Princess of Pop and she changed pop music as a 19 year old shes still changing it abd she had the comeback of the CENTURY!!!" - sam
That's not me, as I would never write that. The third wild card is the Black Eyed Peas. No, they've got little critical respect, but Rolling Stone is going crazy over them. After they came into the spotlight in '03 (was it?) their profile just skyrocketed with The E.N.D. (let me make it clear that the only thing I like about them is that Fergie can sing.) If they can keep Rolling Stone in rapture over them, have some influence (don't rule it out, it could happen), keep their popularity going and start gaining some critical respect they will have a legitimate shot at induction (no I don't think they're even remotely Hall-worthy right now.) I suppose we should see where they are in five years before having this conversation again; same with Muse. In conclusion:
Locks:
-Coldplay (or at least very close to being one, and they can improve their chances even further)
Possibly, a legitimate shot as of now:
-System of A Down
-Queens of the Stone Age
Possibly, and can really increase their chances:
-Britney Spears
-Muse
-Black Eyed Peas
Possibly, but highly unlikely and have lots of work to do if they want to be in a favorable position:
-Evanescence
-Lauryn Hill (she has plenty of critical respect, so why couldn't she keep it up? Did she stop releasing albums or something?)
-N'SYNC (Also, the Hall loses whatever credibility it has left if Lou Pearlman gets inducted as a Non-Performer, just as they do if N'SYNC or The Backstreet Boys get inducted)
-Destiny's Child
-Rob Zombie
-Mos Def
No chance whatsoever, need to buy a ticket:
-Everyone else

I maintain that the sister's chances for Britney Spears is on the high side. None of her albums have made any big critical impression, and it's just two tracks that have really racked up acclaim. Not that there aren't acts in the HOF without loads of acclaim, but, it doesn't hurt.
She just seems too much on the light side, as of now, to be seen as a contender. She's working on a 7th album, so it's not like she has not had time to make a bid for artistic relevance. Then again, like some others, maybe she doesn't care to, and is just happy putting out accessible, non-artistic music.

Quite right.

Rob Zombie is POSSIBLY THE ONLY 1 who may have a chance. None of these other sacks of shit deserve to be in the hall. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that people like Britney Spears, System of a Down, Destiny's Child, and N'SYNC will probably be a shoe in. When a worthless band like ABBA gets into the HOF before Dire Straits, Tom Waits, and Alice Cooper. Then I have no respect for the HOF board that votes the artists in. Talk about a crock of shit
