3 comments so far (post your own)The man had a successful music career, especially on the charts from 1939-42. Somehow, the public never tired of him or the big bands during World War II. I know very little of Miller, as I haven't yet seen the movie made about him. But I do know that once the war was over, he wanted to be an entrepreneur (investing in Coca-Cola distributorships, motels, etc.) and he wanted to re-vamp his band by replacing his men with veterans. But he never lived to see the war end, as well as the trend where the vocalists became more popular than the big band leaders. Posted by Jason Voigt on Sunday, 06/23/2019 @ 15:23pm |
Good writeup, Jason, on a titan of the big band era. Also a war hero (flying into combat areas to entertain/visit the troops). No one really knows how his plane went down, but it is conjectured that they flew under a returning bomber strike force & their plane was hit by bombs being jettisoned by a returning plane. One in a million thing. Posted by Paul in KY on Monday, 06/24/2019 @ 08:48am |
Had it not been for so-called "friendly fire" which was in this case a TOTAL contradiction of terms, he might have been the one to have set off the whole rock scene many years earlier than it really started without having the youth of yesteryear wait for The Comets, Elvis, or The Beatles.
