110 comments so far (post your own)I hope he makes it in someday but I fear not for a long time. His best chance was probably during his mid 2000s career revival but I'm not sure. It's worth mentioning he has inspired many (Flight of Conchords, The Lonely Island) and has outlasted many acts he parodied Posted by Eric on Wednesday, 04/3/2013 @ 17:45pm |
I honestly believe the man deserves to be inducted, and eventually will be. Posted by Sunking278 on Wednesday, 04/24/2013 @ 09:13am |

If Weird Al is inducted it certainly shouldn't be for music because he never developed any music, he just parodied what was already out there. Posted by D. Stroy on Friday, 06/21/2013 @ 15:56pm |
I love Weird Al, but he probably won't get in anytime soon, whether he deserves to or not. Posted by CP on Wednesday, 07/24/2013 @ 11:23am |
Those songs were never actually released anywhere. Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 07/24/2013 @ 11:42am |
I actually have some of those rare songs on my computer (back when the old and 'real' Napster was in business). I'm sure someone by now has uploaded them to Youtube Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 10/3/2013 @ 14:47pm |

You really think Weird Al should be taken seriously? All of his stuff is the music of others with his own parody lyrics. Other than those parodies, he hasn't created any music, or moved music forward one step. He basically helped keep the Dr. Demento show going for a number of years, but other than that, pfffft. If you want to get someone in from the Dr. Demento show, it should be either Dr. Demento himself or Alfred E. Newman for "It's a gas." Posted by D. Stroy on Thursday, 01/23/2014 @ 12:30pm |

Also, one could argue that his music has exposed fans to some artists through his parodies. Posted by Steve Z on Thursday, 01/23/2014 @ 21:56pm |
I think the true "Unquestionable musical excellence" of "Weird Al" Yankovic is focused in his style parodies. The brilliance of his mimicry of others in original styles is truly a gift. Song like "Trigger Happy", "Pancreas", "Dare To Be Stupid", and "Bob" show a keen observation and analysis of music itself. Additionally, I think his lyrical style has evolved and matured over the years. I think his songs have gotten more bite over the years. You may not think so because they are still comedy/novelty songs, but satire and mockery can still be powerful social motivators and/or commentary. It kind of began with "Another One Rides The Bus", using stereotypical annoyances of public transit. But I think it really began to blossom with "Trigger Happy" about the dangers of gun nuts. I think it continued on later in the '90s with songs like "Your Horoscope For Today", poking fun at astrology; "Everything You Know Is Wrong" which is both deep in its own metaphysical and semi-scientific hypotheses and interestingly hilarious in its ridicule of metaphysical and semi-scientific hypotheses. "Don't Download This Song" which not only pokes fun at the whole supergroup exploit, but also poke fun at the whole Napster upheaval. Posted by Philip on Thursday, 01/23/2014 @ 23:33pm |
My favorite Yankovic song in that vein would have to be "Headline News" considering it seemed to anticipate the news media turning into entertainment and focusing on trivial stories and beginning to ignore hard news RIGHT as it was happening (but you could say that song didn't do anything that Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" hadn't accomplished well over a decade earlier, or movies like "Network", etc...) Even better, it mocked "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" which was quite possibly the dumbest of all the faux-alternative hits of the '90s. Posted by |

I went back and checked all the credits of Weird Al's songs again. Weird Al never had any help with the lyrics to his parodies or his original songs. Weird Al wrote all the lyrics! Weird Al also wrote all the music for his original songs. So, "Weird Al" Yankovic should qualify for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Posted by |

That took a long time to scroll past. Way more annoying than compelling. Roy, I know that you're capable of speech and debate, I've seen hints of it on the other site. Knock it off with the lists. Express your passion. Tell me to f off and explain why I'm wrong about Yankovic in your own words. You are capable of that. Posted by DarinRG on Friday, 07/25/2014 @ 07:33am |

Let me break it down very succinctly. Weird Al Yankovic is mad funny. He is master of the rock musical parody because he actually is very talented. He's done Madonna, M.J., Dire Straits, etc. ... most recently Pharrell's "Happy" ("Tacky") etc., etc. and the original artists love his takes and are honored by them. What if "Weird Al" Yankovic isn't nominated and inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in the main performers category, but instead, he is inducted in the "Musical Excellence" category or the "Lifetime Achievement" category? Would that bother anyone? Posted by |
He should be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame too. I don't know why the Hollywood Walk of Fame is taking so long. That should be easy for someone like Al. Posted by |
Bohemian Polka from Alapalooza was a remake of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, word for word. So it's Weird Al's only actual remake of another artist's song. Well, George of the Jungle too. Posted by |

Absolutely. Sure, there are arguments that he didn't write the music, just the lyrics. But, he got permission from each artist &/or band, and plus, he is very much well known around the world and is one of the funniest people in the music industry. Plus, his versions of songs are really good. A definite yes on Weird Al getting inducted. Posted by Nathan Miller on Thursday, 09/15/2016 @ 23:44pm |
imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But Al hasn't really released material that starts with Al. His stuff can be funny and remind us of Michael Jackson or other luminairees, but he doesn't possess t creative spark or originiality. Posted by Diamond on Monday, 02/6/2017 @ 16:03pm |

Why hasn't there been another artist like "Weird Al" Yankovic since "Weird Al" Yankovic started? A parody artist whose career has lasted 40 years. Is no one trying? Posted by |
I'm sure there's plenty of Youtubers who are waiting for their big break on becoming the next big parodyist. Even Al himself once stated in an interview that he's competing with people on Youtube and the Internet, and maybe somebody bigger than him will arise. Weird Al is the top-selling comedic musician of all time. Not just that but he has managed to stay influential for over 40 years. Not many musical artists can claim even that. Posted by Andrew on Tuesday, 08/20/2019 @ 16:50pm |

Since Al's musical style and genre is unique, I'm looking for a baseline for comparison. Posted by Andy on Monday, 10/19/2020 @ 14:05pm |
Weird Al is my number 1 current snub from the hall and I'm not saying that as a meme. You look at the chart and video successes, the way he forged his own path in a field that was all his own. The respect he has amongst other artists is there. Think of all the artists he has parodied and them saying it was a highlight of their career. Posted by Erik on Sunday, 02/7/2021 @ 06:45am |
The Weird Al film will be out next year or so on Roku with Daniel Radcliffe. While the Motley Crue biopic didn't help them out (Pam and Tommy probably will delay them longer) I feel like this flick will boost Yankovic. I'm thinking he'll get a nomination soon and probably be awarded Musical Excellence right after. Posted by mat r on Thursday, 03/3/2022 @ 22:52pm |
He is a unique talent, but if you put him in, what about Steel Panther? To me, those guys are just as talented with their parody stuff. Probably better musicians too. Posted by Paul in KY on Friday, 03/4/2022 @ 07:13am |

Nicolette Larson did backing vocals on "Weird Al" Yankovic's 1988 album Even Worse, on the tracks "Alimony" and "Good Old Days." Posted by |

I feel like Weird Al is the most recognizable artist in what he does in parody, in that he could be called the King of it. Often artists feel honored and like they "made it" in the music industry if Weird Al parodies one of their songs. As well that his parodies help boost the popularity of the original songs, so it isn't just what it parodies makes him popular, it's who originally did it gets a boost in popularity as well. Parodied Queen in Another One Rides the Bus. Joan Jett in I love Rocky Road. Ritchie Valens in Lasagna. Michael Jackson in Eat It and Fat. Madonna in Like a Surgeon. Nirvana in Smells like Nirvana. Billy Joel in An Ode To a Superhero. All those artists were previously inducted into the rock and roll of fame. They might not have been as popular or solidified in pop culture if it wasn't for those Weird Al parodies. Heck, there's even a movie about Weird Al. It may be more of a parody on typical biopics but it is still about him and how he impacted the music industry. As well he had top 40 hits for 4 decades straight He might not be inducted for a while but he is still deserving of it. Posted by Austin Smith on Friday, 08/22/2025 @ 21:51pm |
