Why is Jerry Garcia the only person allowed to tell the Rock Hall which members of his band have to be inducted!? Posted by |
Roy - I know you posted it a couple years ago, but what were you talking about with that question? Jerry was opposed to the idea of the Rock Hall and didn't even show up for his induction. The only members of the Dead not inducted were pianist Bruce Hornsby (who was never officially a member of the band, but toured with them for 2 years) and lyricist John Perry Barlow. It's a well-known fact that Jerry Garcia got to tell Jann Wenner (a fan) to induct not only the original members of the Grateful Dead plus their lyricist, but a few other later members as well. Not every band gets to make that call for their band. Favoritism at play in the Rock Hall. Posted by |
That's really interesting. I've always wondered why the Dead got nearly all of their members in, while The Allman Brothers Band, who had similar lineup changes only got the original members in. Posted by Max on Sunday, 04/24/2016 @ 11:34am |
All those folks were inducted because the Grateful Dead itself was a living thing. It was not about any particular people, except *maybe* Jerry Garcia. It was a living, breathing spirit, itself beyond categorization. Posted by Steve on Tuesday, 09/13/2016 @ 16:52pm |
I'm 61 yrs, & the Grateful Dead have been a part of my Rock N Roll music experience in my life in a major overwelming kinda way,& proidly so. I've dated & lived with former girlfriends of the band while living in S. Florida, & I can say that the band didn't come anywhere I was but only once that I missed the show. A Grateful Dead show had a different ombeiance feel to it that you felt it was so peaceful in a wild messed up outside. The band was a living thing in the lives of any conscience to the times of the 60's & 70's. They were a part of the American fiber I thought. I don't think there will ever be a generation of individuals who go from town to town by thumb just for the chance of catching their next show several states away manytimes. Of course the 7/11's won't mind seeing them gone, but they are the establishment man! Posted by Michael M on Saturday, 04/22/2017 @ 18:49pm |

I am not necessarily a Deadhead per se, but I do happen to really like The Grateful Dead's proggiest effort, "Terrapin Station" quite a bit, especially when other artists cover their work, such as the 40th anniversary tribute to Terrapin Station on youtube. fast forward to 2019, and Robert Smith from the Cure has the Rock Hall add their current guitarist, Reeves Gabrels, who was not originally listed. And he was certainly no friend of Jann Wenner or anyone else on the board or committee. I believe the word was that the RRHOF would only induct 10 members, so we had a few snubs, including the opportunity to induct a black man amongst the rest of the band, and the diversity is always good for the hall. Mickey Hart, Billy Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bobby Weir were the only members of The Grateful Dead who got the Kennedy Center Honors in 2024. You have to be living to get the award. Phil Lesh died five weeks before the ceremony, but he was still given the award. Mickey Hart, Billy Kreutzmann, and Bobby Weir attended the ceremony. All of them were original members. Posted by |
