Like Lionel Richie, Phil Collins was ubiquitous in the 1980's and a hit making machine. I think his vocal abilities and drum work are exemplary. There was a good discussion by the FRL regulars years ago on how an artist should be judged in his or her totality work and solo. Some examples were Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Lionel Richie, Sting etc. The prevailing wisdom that the two are married in people's minds but a person like Collins should be judged for his solo work separately. That would mean 2 inductions for that artist if their solo work was RRHOF quality. I sincerely feel Phil Collins could be the next 2x inductee. He had the commercial CD sales, awards, and several hit songs. Will try to fit him on my 20 or 22 nomination ballot. KING Posted by |

Between Phil Collins, Steve Winwood, Don Henley, and Sting, Phil Collins is the one who deserves a second induction the most, and he will most likely be the one who gets a second induction first between this group. There are so many artist who have been inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, for example Ringo Starr and Barry Gibb, as parts of The Beatles and The Bee Gees respectively, which is absolutely deserved, and as solo artists. Are the solo artists Ringo Starr and Barry Gibb more important to rock music than solo artist Phil Collins? Why has Phil Collins not inducted yet? I don't understand it. He is an artist of diversity and beauty in his music as singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Ringo Starr was inducted into Musical Excellence, not as a performer, and Barry Gibb wasn't inducted solo in any form. I think the vast majority of the solo artists already inducted as performers are more deserving than Phil Collins, but he would be more deserving than the just-inducted Stevie Nicks for instance. And if they're going to select a solo artist via the fan vote, he'd certainly be a much less laughable one than Freddie Mercury, who has been ranked absurdly highly in the fan vote (I didn't even know he had a solo career.) He worked with so many musicians and jam in so many sessions from the 70s and in early 2000. He is one of the best drummer and an iconic voice! He is loved by the 90s hip-hop community and pop culture like Taylor Swift, Lorde, Pharrell, Adele, and so many others. After Genesis he played jazz Big Band with Quincy Jones, Tony Bennet, George Duke... ressurected his fame with Disney. In the 90's he was a popular live act! He made hit songs in the 80's and created a new sound that crafted the decade... and got "annoyin"for some because of all the success and grammies. He shape Pop music in the 80s. BUT in a same way, his impact is very different from GENESIS. And I dont think he needs this award. He won so many already! Its like saying.. are you gonna put Sting after inducting The Police. Yes. Phil Collins is very iconic in the music world, and very well respected and admired. For his great work in Genesis is now legendary. Rather than hyping up his solo material which I consider to be on the more commercial side of Pop Rock, I prefer his outstanding work and drumming in the Jazz Fusion band, Brand X. Phil should absolutely be in the Hall. His influence is all over the pop, r and b, and Hiphop world. His drumming alone would qualify him, and his songwriting and producing should clinch the deal. Definitely someone I can see being recognized for at least Musical Excellence for the foreseeable future. It's not just his solo career (one of the biggest in the 80's, competing with the likes of Madonna, Prince and the King of Pop himself), and it's not just that he's always played a vital role in Genesis' history. As of the latest confirmed reports from July 2025, Phil Collins, now 74, is recovering from knee surgery and managing chronic issues like drop foot from a prior back operation.
