10 comments so far (post your own)Now that the “holy trinity” of prog (Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues) have been inducted and since Metallica had been inducted previously, there might be a possibility of seeing a Dream Theater nomination in about 5 yrs. or so. I happen to like some songs from the new version of Dream Theater. I happen to think that ‘On The Backs Of Angels,’ is definitely one of their best songs and I like the fact that their music does not appear to be sonic sludge any longer, it sounds more like Rush combined with Yes. So how on earth, could I not like it? ;-) Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 06/18/2018 @ 10:47am |

DT has an excellent reputation as a serious band who are committed to making music on their own terms. That said, I don't get much out of their music which I find to be a bit ponderous and self-indulgent. I don't think that the mere inclusions of poly-rhythms or odd time signatures alone should merit the praise heaped on them for geeking-out musically. Sure, they are capable of playing quite well and anyone would be lucky to be able to play at their level though it's not as if any of their albums are on repeat - at least for me. It could be that it's their fans that bug me more - some of whom think that sweeping arpeggios and tapping are required for a guitar solo. If you have to break every song down into permutations of specific techniques then maybe it's not that good of a song to begin with ? Again, DT are great musicians but seeing them perform live can be like going to a clinic at GIT in LA. I do hope they get recognition just for staying in the biz as long as they have which is miraculous. And no - I am not Mike Portnoy trollin' on the band. Very talented and influential band, but I just can't see it happening. Posted by Tyler Partnow on Thursday, 01/17/2019 @ 20:10pm |

Okay so here is the thing when it comes to Dream Theater and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. First of all they have sold 12 millions records as of now when I write this, that is pretty good. They have probably sold millions of tickets, I would probably say around 2-3 million personally, but that is a guess at best. Listen I think that when it comes to the conversation of If someone should get into the Rock Hall, let's discuss some of that criteria. Did you make a positive impact in their genre? Does almost every generation(alive today), every culture and every time zone in some form love your music? is your fan base that diverse? I think when you ask these questions alone, Dream Theater are Hall of Famers, look they are arguably the best Prog Metal band ever. I mean maybe Queensryche will top them, but other than that Dream Theater is probably the top Prog Metal band I mean almost 80 million listens on their top song "Pull Me Under" with songs like "Panic Attack" and "Another Day" not too far behind with a good amount of listens as well. So for me Dream Theater should get in, they are one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all time and to me If you get a title like that you deserve to be Rock and Roll Hall of Famers not to mention the stats and points I made earlier, yes they should go in but they probably will never sniff the Rock Hall and that is a tragedy, the Rock Hall has to get their stuff together. All of these bands should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they aren't, obviously including Dream Theater: Posted by Justice Jaymes Atchley on Monday, 11/18/2024 @ 19:09pm |
Oh yeah let me say one other thing. Clear objectively great songwriting and talent should be apart of the discussion as well when it comes to If Dream Theater should get in. Ladies and Gentlemen Dream Theater are nothing short of being all of those things I mentioned, they are a good live band, they are good songwriters, they are insanely talented. I just wanted to say that because I think the Rock Hall does not pay attention to that enough. ROCK HALL, STOP HATING ON METAL BANDS!
