One of the best and most overlooked female bands of all times. One of the first all female bands to play all their own instruments and wright their own songs.
They way overdue to be in the HOF.

The Runaways should be inducted because they opened the door for so many other bands and they were female teenagers who could rock. The band gave Joan and Lita a chance to have their own careers and they are all very talented musicians and I feel they are truely the best rock band ever.

I am forced to make a comment here, although I think the significance of the Runaways should be clear to everyone. I am rather amazed that there are only 2 other comments even though I have read the praises of the Runaways on other band boards. The Runaways were fairly significant in the NY Punk scene in 1975/76 and might have broken big when Punk/New Wave went commercial a few years later. Unfortunately, Kim Fowley abused this band to the point of destruction by then.

The fact is that The Runaways belong in the Hall! And how cool would it be to see Joan and Lita on-stage together. And from what I have seen, Cherie Currie is looking good. RIP Sandy.

I would love love for the Runaways to be inducted. Number one vote!

I am hoping the release of the movie - The Runaways awakens these sleeping suits in the HoF and get these Hard core RnR chicks in already. Joan and Lita - I still love them. Saw them in NYC back in the mid - 70's.

Dameon; I'm with you all the way. It's pathetic that we have all these soft old fogeys calling Boston and REO Speedwagon snubs(ZZZZ...) while these girls are waiting. I've heard some stuff, and they could really rock hard for 5 teenage girls. I've seen the trailer for the movie, and it looks good. Since it has Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, it'll probably be a success; if it does, hopefully it'll force the Committee to take another look at them AND maybe put them back on the map (Joan's directing it.) They have my full backing, and as a Brit I take offense to the Spice Girls getting credit for starting "Girl Power."

Runaways, Pat Benatar and Heart should all be in.

I'd put the Runaways in, Pat Benatar's a maybe. Heart no, they weren't all that innovative or influential, a good band yes, but this isn't a Hall of Good Bands were talking about

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Tuesday, 06.22.10 @ 08:50am

Too damned influential. I think they will eventually go into the RRHOF.

What is Rock and Roll if not The Runaways?

Posted by MAC on Wednesday, 03.16.11 @ 22:35pm

Rock and Roll is the Runaways (God bless 'em), and about 107 uninducted acts that have better credentials than them.

Posted by DarinRG on Thursday, 03.17.11 @ 04:21am

True. Solid group and I think there could be a case for their induction, but they won't be cracking my Top 50 snubs queue any time soon.

im a huge fan... i love the runaways. teyh were real groundbrekaers for women, adn are part of womrn who rock

Influence: They had a big influence on female musicians, we might not have a few of the ones we have now without these. 25
Innovation: One of the first all female bands. 20
Commercial: They never had a hit unlike their lead singer. 0
Critical: Their music alone dosen't get much attention, more attention is payed towards their gender. 10

55, not worthy.

The truth be told, they really were not much of an influence at all. In their own time they had very little impact, only breaking in Japan for whatever reason. They were not a major influence on another LA band, the Go-Gos, who always cited the NY punk/New wave bands. Nor the LA based "X". Nor for that matter Pat Benatar who emerged in 1979/80 and who had a much bigger impact. It wasn't until 1982 that Joan Jett made any sort of splash.

If anything the story of the Runaways is the story of good old-fashioned Hollywood hometown hype. Hence the inexplicable Runaway's movie which predictably bombed. (You don't release major Hollywood films about cult bands). Based on this type of hype, it became fashionable to cite the Runaways as an influence when they really weren't, to a degree that is a bit offensive; a band should not be given a revisionistic significance they never had. And others, such as Fanny or Quatro, have a better historical argument as pioneering female rockers.

That said, I think Joan Jett may warrant induction individally like Joplin or Patti Smith.

The Runaways had more songs than just "Cherry Bomb".

What about songs like Secrets, Dead End Justice, Wild Thing, You Drive Me Wild, Fantasies, I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are, I Love Playin' With Fire, Rock and Roll, Little Sister, California Paradise and Johnny Guitar? That's bullshit. Seriously. The Runaways are way overdue with this induction. They came out in 1975 so they should've been inducted in 2000. The RRHOF is sexist and they don't induct upon talent. Ultimately, you're very unfair.

How on earth are the runaways first ballot inductees?

Posted by GFW on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 10:21am

What about Lita Ford?? She's the queen of metal and an incredible guitar player...All women everywhere owe this beautiful and talented woman!!

The Runaways were like the first all female punk rock/hard rock band ever! Joan Jett and Lita Ford are legends!
They should get inducted ASAP!

Peaceful journeys to Kim Fowley.

How can the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" induct Joan Jett in over the Runaways??? The Runaways were just as influential today as they were back then. I can't believe they let Joan Jett in but missing are Lita, Sandy, Vicki, Jackie, and Cherie. It's too bad they weren't already inducted when Sandy was still alive.

Posted by DioPhan on Sunday, 04.12.15 @ 22:34pm

Of course the Runaways should go into the RNRHOF just like so many mentioned here. They played their own instruments, all TEENAGE Grrrlzzz NOT WOMEN, teenage girls that's a big difference. They should go under I think Musical Excellence. I listen still to them today, and they really were the BEST band around. Maybe Joan Jett & The Blackhearts induction will have an affect for the Runaways to get in

Posted by Pam on Sunday, 04.26.15 @ 18:26pm

To anyone who says The Runaways were not influential you obviously aren't a female rock musician or a fan there of. If you're saying they don't belong in The Rock Hall you need to make sure you're not a fan of any punk bands of the 80's and newer, any new wave bands of the 80's and newer, any grunge bands of the late 80's and newer, or of any of the current young female pop/rock artists, because they all list The Runaways as a major influence. Everyone from The Germs members to Dave Grohl and Kurt Cobain, from Orianthi to Miley Cyrus to Green Day to Operation Ivy. Get with it Rock Hall, I'm so glad Joan got in last year, I attended the event, but this should have come first. And Lita Ford belongs in as a solo artist as well, you name other female lead guitar players that's shred like she does...Orianthi comes to mind, Lizzy Hale...hmmm, not many. Total epitamy of rock. And The Runaways were one of the most influential bands of all time, not only on rock and pop but on punk, glam, new wave, you name it. Do your research, read interviews of the artists you love. Saying The Runaways didn't influence X is bullshit, along with Black Flag, Social D, The Go Go's, etc. The Runaways did it first in LA. Period.

Now that Joan Jett is in, The Runaways are a must. Not just because her experience with them helped shape her into the pioneer that she is...but because the band itself was pioneering. Almost every female rocker...AND a fair number of males...cite them as an influence. And it's moree than their music. They epitomize the ideal of rock and roll as a cultural phenomenon: the angst, rebellion and sheer joy that people are meant to feel when they experience the R&R world.

Unfortunately, since Joan Jett and the Blackhearts made it in, I have a distinct feeling that, in the minds of the voters, the Runaways have already been represented. It's a shame, too, since the Runaways are much more deserving.

Posted by Joe on Sunday, 11.20.16 @ 16:46pm

Of course they should be inducted. They were an all girl band in a genre that was only done by men until then. And they had a lot of great music during their career, and also began the long lasting career of inductee & legend, Joan Jett. I say, DEFINITELY 100% YES it is time for the Runaways to be inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.
