terribly overlooked band. "Rock Lobster" is in the canon of the most important rock song in rock and roll history. The band safely brought the public's transition from Disco 70's to the New Wave generation. Ricky Wilson's surf guitar with sci-fi atmosphere is one of the most innovative in rock history. Big acts in the 80s like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna emulated the B-52 sound. Their party rock songs are still a staple at weddings, bar mitz vahs, high school and college parties even up to now - unmasking the fact that their "kitschness" is actually timeless, simply because their goal is to make you experience that rock and roll is also FUN, and not some medium you can use as a propaganda for your pretentious ideals.

Can't agree more. I just recently started listening to them again and finding out, yes this is truly a great band. Like you said, Ricky Wilson's gutair riffs were great, even after his death in 1986. This band has overcame so much. They at least deserve to be on the ballot for next years Induction

Let's dance this mess around!

Ultimate happy, party band; Kate Pierson's and Cindy Wilson's voices have always had this i-love-all-girls, -lets-party-now effect on me.

John Lennon supposedly said "Play Loud" (the band's debut album) was his favorite album of all-time.

The B-52's deserve to be inducted for:

1. "Planet Clare"

2. "Rock Lobster"

3. Having a totally cool name

Can't agree any other way. Their style (along with TMBG) are the reason why I love them. Always inventing and reinventing themselves. It's fantastic. Any idea when their new album hits stores?

I love The B-52's, but I suspect they will be seen as a little more than a very successful, very good novelty act. If ABBA can't get in, how can The B-52's expect to?

Posted by Andrew on Saturday, 01.5.08 @ 17:46pm

The B-52s are one of the most original and distinctive sounding bands to come along since their debut album in 1979. They were so ahead of their time. Bands like The Scissor Sisters, Junior Senior and New Pony Club would not have happened without The B52s paving the way.

The B52s are rock and roll in every sense. The whole history and future of rock and roll can be found in their sound.
The B52s are thoroughly qualified for this honor.
They deserve it.

It's SHOCKING that a band with so much style and unique sound has not yet been nominated, (while other much less original bands who came later are)! The B-52's have such a rich history of music! I was sure growing up that the band's wacky message was directed for me to join the "thousands of otherss like you"! The B-52's are pure genius, and keep bringing it! I'm grateful the B-52's exist in such a strange universe! They rock, and need to be in the R & R Hall of fame for everything they have done! They are the soundtrack to my life and so many others! NOMINATE THEM NOW!!!!!!!!!

They rock, music is about enjoyment first of all.
Its a GREAT band.
I listen to hard rock, classical ,world music, and the B-52s are up there in the first place.

I can sort of see why they weren't inducted upon their eligibility. However, in my humble and personal opinion, they should be inducted for their 1979 album alone. From "Planet Claire" to their wacky cover of "Downtown", it's unique, creative and innovative as well as fun.

Posted by aquadonia on Wednesday, 05.7.08 @ 03:08am

Love the band. Think they should be in. Probably need to have 1 more hit album (they haven't done much since 1995 or thereabouts).

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 05.13.08 @ 12:38pm

I'm actually a little surprised they haven't been inducted already. In my opinion they should be inducted for "Rock Lobster" alone. :D

They are crazy original and are the epiphany of rock.
Songs like "Planet Claire" and lets not forget "Love Shack" I mean honestly who comes up with things like they do?

I kind of feel ABBA will get in before they do however...:/

Vote YES B 52

The B-52s are a unbelivably brilliant band who deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame ALREADY!!!

get them the hell in there!!

Posted by DaniBoi on Tuesday, 09.30.08 @ 10:04am

Hell yes the B-52's deserve a place in the R&R HOF! So do Yes & Rush. It's NOT politicaly correct to hate these bands! Get over your grudge & induct them. By not welcoming them in your are doing a disservice to the R&R HOF itself. I don't respect it anymore. Nor should anyone else.

Posted by David Langlois on Tuesday, 09.30.08 @ 10:31am

The members of the B-52s have taken popular American icons (beehive 'dos, rocking surf guitars, and girl band harmonies)and incorporated them into music that is instantly recognizable and just gets trapped into your brain cells. They are unique and underappreciated. They support issues and causes but they've never presented a 'serious,' navel-gazing, introspective set of music that seems to attract the attention of the HOF. I mean, Jann Wenner is all over Paul McCartney anytime the guy passes gas, but apparently doesn't think the B's are HOF material. Very subjective judging there. The band is creative, iconic, and, best of all, just doesn't take itself so seriously that it loses sight of what makes it so unique...they are a great party band that makes the good times better and the bad times a bit more tolerable.

I was turned off to the R&RHoF back in 1998 or
1999 when I scheduled a layover in Cleveland
(that should have been my first red flag) to
see it. I arrived on a Sun. afternoon, mid-
afternoon. They DID give me a discount as it
was only open for a couple of more hours on
that day. However, later it was getting close
to closing time and I was considering whether
to attend a multimedia presentation that was
running at the time ("The Beatles" or "60's
Music" or something like that IIRC) or if I
should continue looking at exhibits. I asked
the running time of the presentation and I
was told something like "20 minutes". It was
something like 12 minutes before "closing
time" so I asked if I would get to see the
entire presentation and was assured that I
would be able to. I entered the "theatre" and
started enjoying a great presentation for the
next 10 minutes or so. Then the presentation
suddenly stopped and we were all told that we
had to leave as the hall was now closed.

I love the B-52's (Rock Lobster!), and I do think they should be inducted, but really, they have only been eligible for four years. Even Sir Paul (you know, the one Jann Wenner is all over) had to wait six years before he got a nomination. It's just too soon to draw any conclusions. They have been considered, so at least someone in the committee considers them worthy.

Btw Teresa, only introspective navel-gazers? You do realize Madonna got in? I wish they focused more on introspective navel-gazers! We need a couple of those.

Absolutly NO EXCUSE why the B52's are not yet in the HOF!!!!!!

Just love this band.. I hope someday they get in

Posted by mrxyz on Wednesday, 10.22.08 @ 09:44am

The B's should most definately be in the Hall of Fame. No other band can compare to their sound and unique style. I just love and admire them. All of the band members seem to have such fun and creative minds. They still sound great even now. I love the way they are, so space-like and futuristic.. and kitschy and romantic and funny. As well as artistic. I'm 17 right now, and their cool sound and lyrics are so relatable. I love them so!

I have asked this question before of high school & college kids, and now I'll ask it again: what else are you listening to right now? I'm always interested to hear this. I promise you I won't make any nasty cracks or pick on you in any way about it. I even asked this of a lady who wrote in on the Backstreet Boys site, and I didn't pick, so you know I will be cool about it.

I agree with one of the posts earlier about the B-52s debut album in 1979, and that they deserve to eventually be inducted into the Hall just for that... it was unique, innovative... and damn good music. It was also critically acclaimed... which is always a plus.

Posted by ray on Sunday, 03.1.09 @ 19:34pm

They'll get in. Funplex will make it so.

ABBA will be inducted this year-- I am optimistic that the B-52's will make it in a few years.

Posted by Anthony Vario on Saturday, 09.26.09 @ 08:41am

Isn't "Rock Lobster" already in the RRHoF's "500 songs that shaped rock 'n roll?"...I would think that would drastically increase their chances of getting in.

Posted by richard on Friday, 10.9.09 @ 02:33am

And let's not forget they were one of the first bands with (pretty much) openly gay members to break through to the mainstream. That's a huge contribution to rock history on its own.

"And let's not forget they were one of the first bands with (pretty much) openly gay members to break through to the mainstream. That's a huge contribution to rock history on its own."- Grant

Sexually has nothing to do with the criteria of influence and innovation. Besides Elton John, Queen, and Judas Priest(who are still waiting for their induction) both had openly gay members and had albums out long before the B-52s.

Posted by Dude Man on Tuesday, 10.13.09 @ 16:58pm

Correction, Rob of Priest came out in the 1990's. He stayed in the closet to keep from loosing album sales, in fear that the band would suffer.

REM is in. I think the other great Athens GA band deserves it too!

Posted by Tim on Saturday, 01.16.10 @ 01:14am

Brilliant group. Their first album was a work of genius. "52 girls" is a rockin' tune, BTW. I think they derve induction.

I saw the B-52s in Charleston West Virginia
two nights ago. They are a great live band and
one of the most innovative bands in American
history. They should have been inducted long ago.

The B-52's definitely deserve being in the HOF. They were definitely a big contributor to bands breaking from the "norm" leading the industry into giving us music that lead to the music of the 80s and 90s. Music didn't have to follow a certain path anymore. Their quirkiness and off-the-wall lyrics made music fun and entertaining for the listener as well as gave us a good beat to enjoy. They are definitely under-appreciated and should be recognized. Their music isn't "dated" as you would often find with the music from other artists. They are still enjoyable even to this day. Put on "Love Shack" or Mesopotamia" or "Channel Z" and you will have people moving to the beat. They are just fun to listen to and true to keeping "entertain" in entertainment. They are true artists. So let's get them in the HOF already! LOL!

Posted by Joe on Saturday, 12.18.10 @ 07:21am

No matter what mood I'm in, when I listen to them, I always end up in a good mood. Their music is filled with such positive energy. They so deserve to be in the R&R Hall of Fame.

An annoying wart!

Posted by Loop on Tuesday, 01.25.11 @ 14:23pm

The fact the B-52's "Love Shack" has been played at every wedding reception, high school dance, bar mitzvah, etc. since it's release is enough to justify their inclusion.

Posted by Erix on Saturday, 02.19.11 @ 11:05am

If they let the Pretenders in, they really should have the B-52's in. At least the B-52's have kept releasing new albums. Funplex is a great album they just came out with recently!

Posted by Will on Friday, 08.12.11 @ 11:59am

Pretenders>B-52's, but I still support their induction.

Posted by Chalkie on Thursday, 08.18.11 @ 22:20pm

I agree that they belong. Their early work, especially, really expanded the definition of rock and they burst out in a scene of fellow RRHOFers/RRHOF to-be-ers. Viva B-52's!

If anyone is in LA, the B-52s are playing Hollywood Bowl with Berlin, The Human League, and The Fixx. I work with the Bowl sometimes and have been stoked for this one forever. I really hope they play some of the earlier stuff....

B-52's are original, fun, & have great songs. I'm biased because Kate Pierson is one of my FAV vocalists. Love the sound of her voice & pretty too.

They have that Alice In Chains quality Staley-Cantrell had alternating verses with different singers usually producing a good harmony.

I would say Roam is my FAV song by B-52's with the vocals & guitar work. My guess they will be nominated in next 5 years. They are also a unique group which will help selection time.(inating one when 3 rock or metal bands are slugging it out, elim)
KING

Posted by KING on Friday, 01.31.14 @ 03:32am

Not going to lie, I thought they were kind of a gimmick band when I was younger. For years, I only heard "Love Shack," which is a really fun song, but is something I've heard at every wedding I've ever been to. However, over the last two weeks I've been looking at their performances on Youtube and have fallen in love with them. After going through their history, which was way more tragic than I anticipated, I would strongly push for their inclusion as soon as possible, not just for their musical notoriety, but as one of the first bands that stood up in the fight against AIDS, back when it was something people didn't want you talking about.

Posted by NixtonV on Friday, 07.4.14 @ 16:30pm

I've always loved the B-52s, but I really don't know any way they can get into the HOF. In fact I don't even know what kind of genre they belong in, besides New Wave! They're music has always been described as 'party' or 'beach' rock. I don't even know where the 'influence' part comes in. Can't take the fact they put out great music, starting with their first album, going up to their post-Ricky cut, Cosmic Thing. I feel they would have to induct a few other New Wave/80s bands before they get in. JMO

Truly one of the most innovative bands of all time. Their vocal harmonies are 2nd to none. Should have been elected into the hall as soon as they were eligible.
