Walker influenced David Bowie bigtime, about as much as Syd Barrett, I'd venture. Bowie covered Walker's "My Death" at most of his concerts during the Ziggy Stardust period.

Scott Walker is like the Frank Black of the '60s. He syncretized all the music and philosophy preceeding him, wrote the best lyrics and the best songs, which passed through him like a tear between the worlds of genius and our own dark planet, a beacon of light passing through.

"My Death" was a Jacques Brel song. Scott Walker just covered it.

There's the sea of mediocrity, there's several poking their heads above the water, there's a genius or three, and then there's Scott Walker.

Scott Walker's recording of Jacques Brel's "Jackie" off Scott 2 is a great track. Amazing he got away with those lyrics in 1968.

Here's a sample. Hilarious!

"And if I joined the social whirl
Became procurer of young girls
Then I would have my own bordellos
My record would be number one
And I'd sell records by the ton
All sung by many other fellows
My name would then be handsome Jack
And I'd sell boats of opium
Whisky that came from Twickenham
Authentic queers
And phony virgins
If I had banks on every finger
A finger in every country
And every country ruled by me
I'd still know where I'd want to be
Locked up inside my opium den
Surrounded by some china men
I'd sing the song that I sang then
About the time they called me Jackie"
