hey, how about we talk about someone who doesn't have sex with small children? Robyn Hitchcock's work with The Soft Boys is great, ahead of its time by a solid ten years. And he remains one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation.

Yet another artist I was only remotely aware of and am unfamiliar with and need to give a serious listen too. (sigh..) there are so many... it's a bit overwhelming. I don't know how you guys keep educated on so vast a sea of music.

Suggestions on the best 3 examples of Hitchcock's work? Where should one start?

Posted by shawn on Tuesday, 07.31.07 @ 17:10pm

Sorry, but he is hardly HOF material....being a "punk" artist should not automatically qualify you...not really seeing all that much influence and changing of rock music

"Suggestions on the best 3 examples of Hitchcock's work? Where should one start?"

Start with the last album, last song, and last 30 seconds to spare you your misery and suffering....just kidding, simma, down, noww...

Shawn, begin with The Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight for one of the best albums you will ever have the privelege of hearing. His debut, Black Snake Diamond Role, is a little softer but has the same playfulness and wit behind it. In '84 he recorded an album that was all acoustic-and-piano, I Often Dream of Trains.

Anon, if you can't see Robyn Hitchcock's massive influence on modern indie-twee bands (Belle and Sebastian, The Decemberists, et al) then I'm forced to assume that you like not knowing what you're talking about.

Posted by Kit on Tuesday, 07.31.07 @ 23:29pm

Thanks for the suggestions, Kit. Although they weren't intended for me, I've only heard Underwater Moonlight, so I'm more than willing to track the rest down.

Strange because if everyone here listened to an album like UM, there'd be no more comments on the Bon Jovi, KISS or Def Leppard pages anymore.

"Massive" influence? A bit overstated there?

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, 08.2.07 @ 20:10pm

No, not at all.

So I guess you like being completely out of touch with music?

Posted by Kit on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 01:58am

I am in touch with what counts, my opinion and feelings...and I think he sucks. And, until he "gets in", the RRHOF agress with me, not you....later much

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 06:16am

Exclusion ≠ sucks any more than inclusion = good.

I honestly gave you more credit than that, Rushboy.

Posted by William on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 11:55am

Bottom line, the guy is never going to get in....face reality..he just aint that big of a deal. BTW, I really do not need any "credit" from you.....now don't you have some band trashing to do elsewhere?

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 14:48pm

I'm not the one who trashes the Hall one minute and tries to buddy up to it the next. If you had better argumentative skills, you wouldn't have to fall back on lame frat-boy crap like that.

Posted by William on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 15:31pm

Like I said, don't you have another place to be -like trashing some fuckin band on this site or asking someone will that be cash or credit? Once again, Hitchcock will NEVER get in. That does not mean I am "buddying up" to the hall - it is just the truth....

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 16:44pm

It is also funny that you perceive this webiste as a place to have "argumentative skills" - speaks volumes.

What is funny too is that you call me 'Rushboy'. Hey at least you know a band I like. I honestly do not know what band or bands you like. However, perusing this site, I sure know which bands you dislike -

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 16:46pm

I don't care about Hitchcock, actually. But yes, when you make a dumb appeal to the hall (der, Hall agree wif me, boi) after repeatedly trashing it for not letting in artists YOU feel should be in, there's an inconsistency.

And yeah, I think if you're going to ATTEMPT to argue, you should put some effort into it.

Posted by William on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 17:22pm

It is not an inconsistency at all - sometimes the hall gets it right (i.e. Robyn Hitchcock) and other times not (i.e. Rush, Moody Blues, etc.)

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, 08.4.07 @ 23:43pm

You're an absolute dork, Anon. Jeezus.

Posted by shawn on Monday, 08.6.07 @ 12:22pm

"I am in touch with what counts, my opinion and feelings..."

Since when do those count for anything? What the hell is so special about your feelings? If these feelings are so strong, you'll be able to articulate why you don't like his music, why you feel his influence is negligible (it isn't, more on that later), and why you're such an insufferable prat.

Robyn Hitchcock is very influential. He took the attitude of punk and stripped it down to fit the singer-songwriter performance module. He is the bridge between Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen et al. to the singer-songwriters of today, Sujan Stevens, Conor Oberst, Devendra Barnhart. He is a link in the chain of one of the most timeless and important subsets of modern rock and/or roll.

You say he sucks, and you don't give any reason as to why you think this. You say the Hall obviously agrees with you since he's not in. Well smart guy he's only been eligible for one year. Ask Patti Smith how long she had to wait. Ask Rush how long they're still waiting. Gee, if Robyn Hitchcok sucks because he was not propelled in in his first year of eligibility (something reserved for only the unquestionable), well then jumping jesus on a pogo stick, Rush must be worse than botulism.

Can you not see why that's a stupid arguement? Did you honestly think when you typed that, "well boy howdy that's going to put an end to this debate right here." Is that really what you thought? Seriously?

Kit, you desperately need a life and a job....very well thought out argument, but he still sucks

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 05:52am

That's it Anon, you obstinate jackass; continue to support your original silly bombast with the blunt thoughtfullness of a Tourett's victim.
And from the Anon cookbook, it's always good to add a dash of bratty condescension with your trademark "..you desperately need to get a life.." motto, though the self elevated rank of superiority is as ludicrous as it is ironic.
You're such a waste of typeface space Anon... really.

Posted by shawn on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 09:12am

"you desperately need a life and a job"-Anon

The idiot's classic comeback. I guess that would mean you're just too busy with life and work to be intelligent, eh?

Ten bucks says I can expect another dull cliché in response to this.

Posted by William on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 09:16am

Just what I expected...the "know it all" (i.e. Kit) is afraid to show who he is..LOL, LOL....do you want fries with that coke?

Posted by Anon on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 14:32pm

"Just what I expected...the "know it all".. is afraid to show who he is..LOL, LOL...." - Anon

Does it even phase you how gargantuanly moronic that is coming from someone with "ANONYMOUS" on his "Hi - My Name Is:" sticker, you giggling bedwetter?

Posted by shawn on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 14:48pm

Anon, Kit, Shawn, we are all anonymous idiot! At least I have provided some background about myself on prior posts.

Getting back to the topic, Kit said "Journey Sucks." Dezmond said, Linda Rondstadt "sucks." So, I can say Robyn Hitchcock "Sucks", because he does. Granted, it is just my opinion, but I am allowed to express it here. Now, Shawn, go fight your own battles....

Posted by Anon on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 15:18pm

Sure Anon, you can say anybody sucks that you'd like. But if you expect to be taken as anything more than the blathering fool you've consistently demonstrated, you'd better come up with something more substantial than "Hitchcock sucks see, cuz he ain't in da Hall."
Dezmond qualified his "sucks" capper; it wasn't a stand alone sound bite; but that has already been pointed out to you.
Kit positively dismantled your "argument" and all you can come back with is one of your insipid catch phrases. Anon, the rest of us have so little respect for you because you have no regard for the concepts of logic, context, perception or humility.

You're kinda the epitome of an ass; you waste our time.

"Kit, you desperately need a life and a job"

I have two jobs, jerkwheat. That post was written duing my usual insomnia-stricken early morning. Obviously you need a whole work-free day to make a post of any sort of substance, but I can just bang them out while eating my one AM pop tarts.

"Just what I expected...the "know it all" (i.e. Kit) is afraid to show who he is.."

I never claimed to know it all, just that I know more than you, and your lack of replies of merit have certainly proven that.

Opinions on their own are worthless. You must have evidence and reason behind your position for me to take it as anything more than you being...you. I gave reasons why Journey sucked. Dez gave reasons why he found Linda Ronstatdt was without merit. You have done no such thing with your Robyn Hitchcock bashing. In fact you seem to be doing it just for the sake of doing it. Is this way of proving something? What are you trying to prove? Because if it's that mothers should not drink paint thinner while pregnant, you're the poster boy for that cause.

Posted by Kit on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 19:13pm

"I never claimed to know it all"

I never said that you "claimed" to know it all. You just "act" that way.

Dez never provided any rationale as to why LR sucked, except to discredit a post from above his about politics and that she is NOT being left out of the HOF b/c she is from the West coast, but b/c she "sucks." Well, why does she suck? He never said....

"Sujan Stevens, Conor Oberst, Devendra Barnhart"

Wow, are you just into naming artists that no one knows of or cares about, except for some wannabe intellectual types like yourself? Stop naming talentless punk acts that no one really cares about....

Since you are a HS Student - word of advice - when you grow up - no one, and I mean no one, likes a pretentious know it all, like yourself.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 19:59pm

BTW, just because you do some research and listen to some "underground" acts does not make you smart Kit. It makes you motivated to learn facts about music, that's about it. Anyone can pick up a fuckin history book....so don't flatter yourself. Others mb impressed, but I am not.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 20:02pm

If "anyone" can do it, then so could you. Honestly, it's almost like you're trying to discredit knowledge itself.

Argue based on what you know, but don't get resentful because others took the time to inform themselves.

Posted by William on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 20:51pm

Its not what you say, it is how you say it.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 20:57pm

"Stop naming talentless punk acts that no one really cares about.... "

They aren't punk you dingus.

"It makes you motivated to learn facts about music, that's about it."

So, you're saying you do not share this motivation? That's interesting, since you're going to a site for the discussion of....WAIT FOR IT...facts about music.

ps: I'm not a high school student, learn how to read.

Posted by Kit on Tuesday, 08.7.07 @ 22:45pm

"They are not punk"...well you know what I mean, just remove the word punk then.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, 08.8.07 @ 02:03am

Yes, you meant that you know absolutely nothing about music past or presence. Messaged recieved loud and clear.

Posted by Kit on Wednesday, 08.8.07 @ 02:27am

No, I meant to stop listing artists that are obscure and "underground" - no one is impressed.

Posted by ANON on Wednesday, 08.8.07 @ 02:49am

And, btw, that would be:

"Message received"

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, 08.8.07 @ 02:51am

Not everyone is a shallow shitsmear like you and listens to music only to impress other people.

Posted by Kit on Wednesday, 08.8.07 @ 13:46pm

After he was in the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock had a good run as a solo artist.

His debut, Black Snake Diamond Role was very solid. Unfortunately, his sophomore effort Groovy Decay wasn't that great. Nevertheless, after Groovy Decay, we had every album from the fantastic I Often Dream of Trains to Queen Elvis and Eye.

An artist well worth your time.
