Nena is something of a pop culture icon in Germany. She had a solid string of hits over here in the mid-80's, then more or less dropped out of the spotlight with a series of only moderatly successful albums and had a spectacular comeback in recent years. For the rest of the world, though, she'll remain a one-hit wonder. If there was a German R&R hall of Fame (which there isn't because Germany still has a rather provincial attitude towards Pop & Rock music) she'd be a no-brainer. But, really, even including her on this list is a laugh, especially since really legendary acts such as Kraftwerk and Can, who inarguably have influenced the shape of global music, are still ignored, not to mention anyone else outside the anglo-saxon phalanx, such as ABBA.

And while we're at it, where the hell is TANGERINE DREAM on the "complete" list of artists, FUTUREROCKHALL? At least they're worth considering.

Nena is definitely not a one-hit wonder in Germany and she's also had some other success in non-English speaking parts of Europe, but she is a one-hit wonder in the US and the UK (albeit it was a fantastic New Wave hit.) And I can't say she's changed music in any way; I agree with denyo's post. She had another minor hit in the UK (#70), but yes "99 Luftballoons" was her only charting song in the US. She's also had another #1, 2 other Top 10's and 2 other Top 20's in Switzerland, 4 more Top 10's and 2 more Top 20's in Austria, and 6 other Top 10's (and 2 Top 40's besides that) in Germany. So to the English-speaking world she's a one-hit wonder, and thus a footnote in pop history. No way she should be in before Kraftwerk.

Channel 4 conducted a television poll in 2006, attempting to come up with a list of "50 Greatest One Hit Wonders." Nena came in at #2 with "99 Red Balloons." Not only is Nena not a one hit wonder, but 15 of the acts on that list weren't one hit wonders. Just goes to show how "informed" some people are!! (Channel 4 had shortlisted 60 songs to vote from, so it was their fault, not the public's)

Actually, depending on what your definition of a one hit wonder is, it was AT LEAST 15 who weren't one hit wonders.
