The Motown artists are always tricky. I feel Diana Ross should be in based on her performance abilities and length of an amazing career. Not only that but she has also influenced countless numbers of future artists. However most of the Motown artists never wrote their own stuff, Ross included until later in her career, and then there is a line between rock 'n' roll and pop/r&b. The Temptations are in and she should be too.

Diana Ross should definately be in because at one time she was considered the hardest working women in music. Her music is also much different from her work with the supremes.

WELL WHAT HOW CAN YOU HAVE A R&R HF AND NOT INCLUDE DIANA ROSS AS SOLO ARTIST!SHE IS IS THE BLUEPRINT FOR ALL THOSE WHO CAME ALONG AFTER HER.SHE WAS GREAT WITH THE SUPREMES AND GOT HER DUE.SHE WAS I MY OPINION BETTER AS A SOLO ACT! SHE SHOULD NOT BE IGNORDED BY THE R&R HF ANY LONGER!IF THINK OF IMPACT LOKK NO FURTHER THAN DIANA ROSS SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN COPIED BUT NEVER DUPLICATED SHE IS MUSICAL ROYALTY AND IT'S TIME NOT ONLY THE R& R HF AND THE GRAMMY'S RECOGNIZE THAT IT'S JUST A SAD COMMENTARY ON THE POWERS THAT BE! SHE IS NOW ALMOST 63 AND IT WOULD BE GOOD TO AGKNOWLEDGE HER WHILE SHES HERE AND NOT AFTER SHES GONE AND A FAMILY MEMBER ACCEPTS ON HER BEHALF! THIS SEEMS TO BE THE TREND WITH THE HALL OF FAME CELEBRATE AND LET NOT ONLY DIANA ROSS BUT COUNTLESS OTHERS KNOW THAT THEY ARE DESERVING AND THE ROAD THEY PAVED TO MAKE IT EASIER ON THOSE WHO CAME AFTER A MUCH EASIER ONE TO GO DOWN.COME ON PEOPLE GET IT TOGETHER!

Far too many years have passed that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have overlooked Diana Ross as a solo artist. Her contributions in the music business have been invaluable and unprecedented, especially considering that she is Black and a trailblazer. So, I say let the RRHF sleep on acknowledging Ms. Ross's accomplishments, there is no way that her star can be diminished, it already shines quite so brightly regardless of who admits it!!! I do, in all fairness, applaud their inclusion of Ms. Ross, as a member of the Supremes, but even so, they could not deny her contributions with the group either. So go figure!!!!

She probably taught Madonna everything she knows.

Miss Ross should hhave been inducted long ago.The small number of female artists in the hallis still disturbing.Nothing against Percy Sledge or Leonard Cohen, but if they were females with the same careers they probably would not be in.

Denying Diana Ross the recognition she deserves as a solo artist is like denying jazz' influence on all musical forms which followed it. Diana Ross has not only had more than 70 hits, MORE THAN ANY OTHER FEMALE ARTIST IN RECORDED HISTORY, but, her career has alwas been the blueprint for every female(& male) artist who had even considered wanting to be a dive. She broke so many colour barriers in the 1960's w/ the Supremes, yet, her/their contribution to the Civil Rights Movement get ignored-CONSTANTLY!! As the Women's Lib movement began to gain ground in the '70's she was on the forefront, providing music to which women could find themselves & declare their independence. In the '80's, w/ more women in the workplace, her music was there for them, too, & the exercise revolution, gay rights, etc., etc.

YES to Diana Ross

Ross' biggest selling album "Diana" from 1980 , was produced by Chic frontmen Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards. Featuring the monster hits "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out". A semi-classic album.

Should one "semi-classic" album = induction into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame??

Her and Aretha are the voice of motown
Posted by tinmam on Wednesday, 09.3.08 @ 14:01pm
That would be pretty tricky since Aretha Franklin is from Memphis and never recorded for Motown!

Gitarzan-that is because tinman is an idiot. He doesn't know anything he is talking about.

Diana Ross is the whore of Motown... almost literally. She should never be considered, let alone nominated, let alone inducted.

Aretha, "The Queen of Soul". Was born in Memphis but raised in the Motor City.

Really guys C'mon... Miss Supreme is already in the RRHOF. What I really want to know is who do you think is sexier. Miss Supreme or her daughter Tracee Ellis Ross, who plays Joan on the sitcom "Girlfriends".
Posted by Joe-Skee on Thursday, 09.4.08 @ 13:29pm
Joe-Skee, Aretha didn't record for Motown or any of its subsidiaries; ergo, she is not a "Voice of Motown."
Posted by Philip on Thursday, 09.4.08 @ 13:58pm
Philip I think you need to read my blogs more carefully. Aretha was with Atlantic Records. I said she was raised in Detroit. Calm down man... everything will be O.K. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Posted by Joe-Skee on Thursday, 09.4.08 @ 14:27pm
Joe, I read your posts, just fine, and I am perfectly calm. My point is, if you didn't record for Motown, Tamla, Gordy, Soul, etc., you're not a "Voice Of Motown," even if you were born, raised, or lived a long time in Detroit. She may be a Voice Of The Motor City, but not a voice of Motown. (Yes, I know that sometimes people get lazy and say "Motown" instead of "Motor City" to infer Detroit, I am from and still living in Michigan after all, but we wouldn't even do *that* if not for the record label.)
Posted by Philip on Thursday, 09.4.08 @ 14:35pm
tinny, I don't have anything against Billie Holiday or Marilyn Monroe. Both actually had talent; in fact, Holiday even wrote a few of her own classics.
Posted by tinmam on Thursday, 09.4.08 @ 20:19pm
No, she can't sing. That's why she had to sleep with the boss to make it big.

Diana Ross, as much as any other woman, past, present and future, is more than deserving of a solo place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, mostly because when you look at the doors she kicked down...there are other artists, especially women, and definitely African-American, who have been able to simply walk through those doorways and to shine without having to endure what she had to...it doesn't matter who she slept with, whose toes she stepped on...she worked VERY HARD to make a career that made an undeniable SIGNIFICANT impact on modern American music...no ifs, ands or buts....PERIOD!!!!!

I had thought that Miss Ross was in as a solo artist. But when i started checking i was shocked that she was not. I love me some Madonna, but like the post above, but she should never have been in before Miss Ross. Another inclusion the Rock and Roll hall has miss out on is Donna Summer!
Posted by I AM MUSIC on Tuesday, 03.24.09 @ 10:04am
I think she's little more than a cheap w h o r e. She has a media team that blocks more of her work than Madonna. AND she screwed over the Supremes like there's no tomorrow. Big surprise she was arrested for drunk driving. While returning a copy of V.I.Warshawsky to the Blockbuster in Tucson, AZ. Of course, she's tried to keep that out of the media. BTW...she had to cancel her tours after coming out wearing a 20-foot wig and having no audience. As if.

Diane became a legend and household word as a member of the Supremes. The legendary trio was inducted into the R and R Hall of Fame in 1988. In that group is where Diane made her most contributions to the field of rock and roll. The Supremes were the Sweethearts of the 1960's and the most successful American group of that decade. They were also the most successful female group of all time. Diane as a solo act has had 5 or 6 number 1 hits; however, only when you combine the 12 that she made with The Supremes is her record impressive. Diane is already a member of the R and R Hall of Fame as a member of the legendary trio.........the lead singer of the legendary Supremes will always be how she will be best remembered! Leave it where it lies!

Diana Ross should be posted in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist. In the 1960s, Diana Ross was a supreme and carried them into the 1970s when she departed to go on her own. In the 1980s, she has proven her versitility in all kinds of music, made several # number hits such as "Swept Away and Mirror Mirror." How can R&R Hall of Fame deny the "DIVA."
Posted by laurie on Friday, 01.8.10 @ 22:39pm
How can they deny the Diva? Her music is uninspiring and unmitigated crap. The Supremes sounded better AFTER she left!
Posted by Philip on Saturday, 01.9.10 @ 03:50am
For someone who clearly dislikes Diana, this Phillip person has an awful lot to say about her. He has very strong opinions, which are like sphincters; everybody's got one. I'm sure that there is someone who dislikes whoever HE is inspired by, and thinks is great.

Come on Rock & Roll committee. Diana Ross is overdue for being inducted into the Hall of Fame. What does she have to do? What other artist, who has 18 number ones, and countless top 10's, including The Kennedy Center Honors Award", and France's Arts and Letters Honors, and not be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a trasvety. Induct this artist, and give her the credit she deserves.....An artist of uncompromising talent...A living Legend.
Posted by Straus Davis on Monday, 03.15.10 @ 22:27pm
Diana Ross is already inducted in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Supremes, (Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross & Cindy Birdsong) anything Ms. Ross has achieved after her departure from the group officially in the 14 January 1970 at Las Vegas Frontier Hotel will always be associated with the FEMALE TRIO she and Motown boss Berry Gordy turned into a LEAD & BACKUP SINGERS (Dog &Pony Show) to future her and her alone in order to force feed us "Diana" as a solo act neglecting the talent of the remaining members!!
Posted by gaffe garcia on Wednesday, 10.20.10 @ 20:40pm
THE MIRACLES were Motown's "groundbraking" act. They tore down the doors , not only for Ross , but for EVERY OTHER MOTOWN ACT that followed them . If THEY can't get inducted, why should Ross be inducted twice ?

ARTISTS INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME BY DIANA ROSS
Posted by Roy on Friday, 03.11.11 @ 06:32am
Anybody who thinks Diana Ross' solo career warrants an induction is either totally unfamiliar with it or excessively delusional. I'm with Bill G., Philip and others, no to Diana Ross.
Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Monday, 03.28.11 @ 11:26am
Diana did not sleep her way to the top...if she had they would have had hits at the time they signed to Motown...Diana and Berrys affair was one that begin after the suppremes became famous...these two people were alike in many ways and shared their dreams together...if all tyhe women at Motown had concentrated on their careers insyead of Diana's career...just maybe they too could have elevated to her status, but they chose to be petty and jealous and they went on to become mediocre performers. Diana was destined to become famous...she wanted it that bad.....and I percieve her as one of the hardest working singers out there...do any of you who mock her think rihanna will be around in 50 years...if so the you too are delusional...diana worked hard to get where she is at and not one hater will bring her down...her fans are loyal and fierce in protecting their diva...so Diana should have been inducted along toime ago...you cant have history of rock n roll with out having her honored!

She's been honoured with what mattered the most, The Supremes.
Posted by GFW on Wednesday, 06.8.11 @ 17:11pm
Considering her long trail of deceit pertaining her raise to fame as a Supreme, taking in consideration her betrayal and manipulations to fellow members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong (her chosen replacement for Florence) Her affairs with Berry Gordy/Motown boss and all that transpired from 1964 to 1969 when she finally went solo while The Supremes were "railroaded" out of the industry her induction should be as a group member, NEVER A SOLO!
Posted by Gafe Garcia on Sunday, 06.12.11 @ 16:08pm
definetively miss ross deserves induction as solo artist.
Posted by rodolfo ramirez on Wednesday, 09.28.11 @ 11:36am
Diane Ross is already inducted as one of THE SUPREMES. Now, considering the negative aura she's embraced with no constriction regarding her megalomaniac rampage as a group member that even in 2000 when "The Return To Love Tour aka The Supremes Reunion Tour" turned out to be by her actions the final slap on the face of the fan base she deserves "NO" recognition as a "solo" it will serve her well as the bitter pill she so well deserves!

Just out of interest, what has she done that's so awful?
Posted by GFW on Sunday, 12.11.11 @ 15:17pm
"Upside-Down" and "Love Hangover" for starters. "Endless Love" is equally nothing to celebrate. From 1964 on, every note that Diana sang, she always sounded full of herself, in love with herself, full of ego. It makes her unlistenable. I definitly prefer the Jean Terrell years. She is also largely responsible for the decline of Motown during the '70s, partially why the attempted MoWest efforts were a flop, etc. There is just nothing to like or respect about this woman.
Posted by Philip on Sunday, 12.11.11 @ 15:46pm
eh, I still love her work with the supremes.
Posted by GFW on Sunday, 12.11.11 @ 15:51pm
If you go by chart stats, I don't think you can say Diana Ross had a terrible solo career. It's not spectacular, but pretty respectable. She started off fairly well with the remake of Ain't No Mountain High Enough which I consider to be the definitive version because she gives it way more passion than the original. It's the stuff after Love Hangover in the late 70s,early 80s that takes the luster off. Other than Upside Down, there's nothing really to see there. Endless Love is boring as hell, and when was the last time you heard Muscles on the radio? I know Adult Contempory isn't a style that's appreciated very much here, but I think you do have to give Diana credit for 2 of the best soft rock tunes of the 70s in Touch Me In The Morning (probably 1 of the best break up songs of all time) and Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)......good material.
