I've heard of his daughter Pam and know her music better than his. I'd vote for Pam before Mel.

As a child I grew up listening to a lot of country music, and this is the only country artist I knew of that really did a song that hit home during the Vietnam War. I can clearly see why he could get in the country Hall of Fame because he did have quite a bit of success. I'm just not sure that he was that influential in rock 'n' roll. I think that would be up to the artists who were influenced by him to decide.
