I think Kool & the Gang should be RRHOF worthy. They had infectious hits like Celebration & Misled that get in your skin & bones. Humming those songs for days.

You would think Kool & The Gang would be in Hall by now. They have longevity, great hits, & respect from fellow musicians and artists across genres.

A very good sound from this group especially the singer. There are worse groups in the Hall of Fame...Electing Kool & The Gang would be smart decision in 2015,2016. KING

I still can't believe Kool & The Gang has failed to be inducted. Misled might be one of the best songs ever recorded. Love Emergency, Joanna, Jungle Boogie, and their hits. Roy has listed them and it takes up a good block. The lead singer has hands down one of the best voices. They can funk it up, a little R&B, play it straight up. Kool & The Gang has the musical talent to do what they want. A poster brought up Earth, Wind & Fire an excellent group who has been inducted. I don't know why they haven't been inducted. 2016 is a good year to start. KING

ROY

I think Kool & The Gang will be inducted within next 5 years RRHOF. They have fulfilled the RRHOF criteria better than most. You have listed in a full block their hits. I liked Jungle Boogie, Misled, Emergency the best. JT a great singer. A KING FAV band Kool & The Gang. KING

Posted by KING on Thursday, 07/2/2015 @ 19:46pm

The last true funk band to be inducted was Earth Wind And Fire, fifteen years ago. The O'Jays, Isaac Hayes and Prince were inducted over ten years ago, though I would consider them more soul or R&B.

The Hall is a bit overdue to recognize another funk band. I would say that The Commodores, the Ohio Players or War (who was nominated this past year) should get a chance at induction. KC & The Sunshine Band deserve a spot however they are more a disco band. However, I think Kool and The Gang are a quintessential funk band. They are a group that could help make up for the Hall ignoring the subgenre.

Keep up the good work, ROY and KING

I'm hoping The Spinners earn induction this year. They are deserving but it will open up the current log jam of deserving groups like The Commodores & Kool & The Gang. JT Taylor is an excellent singer. Real smooth. That was a smart decision when the band signed him on. They became a hit machine. I always liked Misled myself. Kool & The Gang earned their notoriety and respect with 50 years in the music business. They definitely were innovative with the addition of brassy horns and funk sound with the rhythm and blues. I think Kool & The Gang will be 1 of my choices for 2016-2017 nomination. KING

So they are only going to induct 8 members from bands from now on! Here it goes for Kool & The Gang:

Kool & the Gang

01. Robert Bell (1969-Present: bass, vocals)
02. Ronald Bell (1969-Present: saxophone)
03. George Brown (1969-Present: drums)
04. Dennis Thomas (1969-Present: saxophone)
05. Claydes Charles Smith (1969-2006: guitar)
06. Robert Mickens (1969-1986: trumpet, vocals)
07. James "J.T." Taylor (1978-1996; 2001: vocals)
08. Clifford Adams (1978-Present: trombone)

THE REST

01. Rick Westfield/Ricky West (1969-1976: keyboards) died in 1985
02. Otha Nash (1975-1978: vocals, percussion, trombone) short lived member
03. Michael Ray (1981-1986: trumpet) short lived member
04. Curtis Williams (1982-Present: saxophone, keyboards) should be inducted, but won't be

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 03/4/2017 @ 21:47pm

The trombone player Clifford Adams joined Kool & the Gang the same year as the singer J.T. Taylor. Clifford Adams is still with the group. Adams and Taylor were both on Celebration. It would look very odd if they induct Taylor without Adams. I don't think they will do that. Another case of remembering the singer, but forgetting the horn player. It won't happen here.

James "J.T." Taylor (1978-1996; 2001: vocals)
Clifford Adams (1978-Present: trombone)

Was shopping at Trader Joe's and they played a lot of forgotten 80's songs on the speaker in there. One of them, "Misled" by Kool and the Gang. That song rocks. One of the few funk songs that greatly blends with hard guitar riffs. It reminded me how unappreciated they are by the RRHOF. Get 'em in!

Posted by Jason Voigt on Saturday, 04/22/2017 @ 01:03am

So the Rock Hall is actually still willing to induct more than 8 members of a band based on who they nominated with Rufus.

Kool & the Gang

01. Robert Bell (1969-Present: bass, vocals)
02. Ronald Bell (1969-Present: saxophone)
03. George Brown (1969-Present: drums)
04. Dennis Thomas (1969-Present: saxophone)
05. Claydes Charles Smith (1969-2006: guitar)
06. Robert Mickens (1969-1986: trumpet, vocals)
07. Ricky West (1969-1976: keyboards)
08. James "J.T." Taylor (1978-1996; 2001: vocals)
09. Clifford Adams (1978-Present: trombone)
10. Curtis Williams (1982-Present: saxophone, keyboards)

This is a good sign for the Rock Hall in 2019 for Kool & The Gang.

Finally! The 2018 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductees: Kool & The Gang

Robert “Kool” Bell, Ronald Bell, George Brown & James “JT” Taylor p/k/a “Kool & The Gang,”

The strange thing is, JT Taylor wasn't even mentioned as a nominee with Kool & The Gang during the two times they were nominated for the Song Hall, but now they are just inducting him. The Song Hall has done this sort of fishy thing before in previous years. I will have to go back and check how many songs JT Taylor penned.

Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 02/7/2018 @ 09:53am

JT Taylor will perform with Kool & The Gang at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction ceremony and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. He will be there like Steve Perry, but he will perform as well.

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 03/10/2018 @ 14:04pm

I'm guessing Darin means it made them sellouts because of the ubiquity of the song for weddings, sports events, etc. It was way too commercial to the point of schlock.

Plus, it's the only song of theirs most remember nowadays, so it unfairly gets them remembered as one-trick ponies.

Please explain to me why Celebration is a bad song.

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 03.10.18 @ 14:04pm

"Good" and "bad" are subjective terms that have no substantial meaning. Your question was why Earth, Wind & Fire are more respected than Kool & the Gang. It's because EWF isn't primarily associated with a piece of Velveeta covered musical plastic that most people associate with their drunk aunt awkwardly dancing at a wedding reception.

Posted by DarinRG on Saturday, 03/10/2018 @ 22:40pm

Kool and The Gang should get a nomination and hopefully be inducted. Meet the criteria.
Would like to see War reconsidered also.

Which songs should they perform? They will have to perform pre-J.T. Taylor and J.T. Taylor tracks.

The group has lost two founding members — Ronald Bell and Dennis Thomas — in 15 months. But Robert "Kool" Bell, who co-founded the band more than 55 years ago, remains eternally optimistic

such powerful creative music my favorite band I own just about every recorded lp.

Kool and the Gang are my favourite funk band along with Earth, Wind, and Fire. These guys made a no 1 single called Celebration. This one is obviously iconic and unforgettable. The Gang also made other top 10 singles like Fresh, Cherish, Get Down On It, and Jungle Boogie: these 4 are also unforgettable. So Y didn't these guys get inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame???

Kool and the Gang should be a lock on this ballot for 2024. After the Spinners got inducted, I have high hopes. Even though we know David Lee Roth is a voting member of the Rock Hall, he should definitely be trying to push them. He got the group to open up for Van Halen in 2012. Where you at, Diamond Dave?

HERE WE GO AGAIN….
Inducting a Black group…the MAJORITY of whose members are DEAD…
So that only TWO new members of Color are added to the Voting Body…
And The HoF STILL thinks that people are DUMB or NAIVE as to what's REALLY going on.
Only ONE of THE COMMODORES got inducted. RICHIE.
Only ONE member of RUFUS got inducted. CHAKA
Only ONE,maybe TWO of THE SPINNERS got in…HENRY and JOHN .HENRY DIES ONE MONTH LATER…
While the REST of the members of these groups are IGNORED or DEAD..
…And so, the DECEPTION goes on.
Fewer Black Voters means less Black representation in the Voting Body…
To INDUCT OTHER BLACK ARTISTS IN…
Thus the DISPARITY and DECEPTION CONTINUES.
And Black artists continue to get SHORT SHRIFT.
DONNA SUMMER was NOMINATED FOUR TIMES: 2008, 2010,2011,&2012…
With NO INDUCTION.
Then she DIED…
And THEN they inducted her. Number added to VOTING BODY..ZERO.
SMOKEY was inducted ALONE in 1987…while the REST of THE MIRACLES were IGNORED…
Then the HoF WAITED:
FIVE YEARS…TEN YEARS TWENTY YEARS…
25 YEARS!!
In the INTERIM, RONNIE WHITE DIED…MARV TARPLIN DIED…and BOBBY ROGERS was NEAR DEATH.
ONLY CLAUDETTE and PETE were LEFT…
and THEN, MOTOWN'S Legendary First Group was FINALLY INDUCTED. Then PETE DIED..
Only SMOKEY and CLAUDETTE were LEFT. ONLY TWO PEOPLE added to the VOTING BODY…
And SO…The GAME GOES ON..
BIG MAMA THORNTON was inducted this year.
She's DEAD.
KOOL & THE GANG got in…MOST are DEAD.
JAMES BROWN got in the FIRST YEAR…THE FAMOUS FLAMES were SNUBBED…
26 YEARS GO BY…
THE FAMOUS FLAMES are FINALLY INDUCTED in 2012. BOBBY BYRD, JOHNNY TERRY,and LLOYD STALLWORTH are DEAD…Only BOBBY BENNETT is LEFT…Then THE FAMOUS FLAMES finally GET IN.BOBBY DIES 8 MONTHS LATER…NOBODY added to the VOTING BODY.
DO…YOU…SEE…A…PATTERN…HERE ??
