Uncovering the Next Generation's Hall of Fame
The Rock Hall Reconsidered Project
Inspired by this post, Nick Bambach and Darren Hines organized this ambitious project which reimagines the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction system.
We’re applying the induction system of the Baseball Hall of Fame to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as an alternative induction process. We’ll be starting from scratch - from 1986 to the present (which would be 2022/1996) - and seeing if we can produce better, more well-rounded classes. While the Baseball HOF’s induction system is far from perfect, it certainly appears to be more throughout and better overseen than the Rock Hall. This will be an interesting experiment and I hope we do a much-better job addressing the backlog of worthy candidates (most of whom never even made the actual ballot).
One significant difference between the induction rules of this project versus the Rock Hall's is that each artist has a 10 year eligibility window. This limiting factor created a much needed urgency with the voters to ultimately decide on an artist's Hall-worthiness. As you'll see highlighted below, most artists were inducted on the first ballot, but many artists were inducted in their final year of eligibility.
Read much more about the project and the full voting results on Nick's website, the Audio-Visual Repository. Thanks to Nick and Darren for organizing this project. Results reprinted below with permission.
