Uncovering the Next Generation's Hall of Fame
Future Rock Legends predicts the 2020
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees
Future Rock Legends predicts the following 15 eligible artists will be on the 2020 ballot:
Artists who have never been nominated...
- Mötley Crüe - This will be a good test to determine of the Rock Hall Museum's Voice Your Choice kiosk really is a determining factor to getting on the ballot. Mötley Crüe have been eligible for years and haven't been able to get the Hall's attention, but behind this year's popular biopic, The Dirt, they have put themselves firmly in the conversation. If they don't get nominated this year, it will be a significant rebuke of the band from the Nominating Committee.
- Iron Maiden - The Voice Your Choice kiosk's top two have been Mötley Crüe and Blink-182 for about six months, but Iron Maiden has been holding steady in the third spot. Since Blink-182 would be an unpalatable candidate for a lot of voters, the Hall may go with Iron Maiden, despite the band's threats to boycott the whole thing if they ever did get inducted. There are some who object to nominating Iron Maiden before Judas Priest gets in, but getting either of them inducted is a big win for metal representation. If Judas Priest didn't appeal to voters when they were on the ballot, you have to let Iron Maiden have a crack at it.
- Joy Division / New Order - Last year's induction class was overflowing with UK bands, so the Nominating Committee probably has even more names on their short list. Whether these two bands should get nominated together or not is debatable, but like The Small Faces / The Faces, their induction chances greatly increase when they're bundled.
- Beck - Beck was overlooked last year, but his credentials as a first ballot Hall of Famer haven't diminished. He should get a nomination this year.
- Cyndi Lauper - Last year, Alan Light mentioned that Cyndi Lauper was in the conversation at the Nominating Committee meeting, but was put aside to make room for a Stevie Nicks nomination (Pat Benatar, the Go-Go's, and Eurythmics were also considered). Look for one of those names to surface this year. Despite being known for her 80's hits, Lauper's career has been long and varied and she continues to be firmly entrenched in the music industry.
- Willie Nelson - Like Lauper, Willie Nelson has countless friends in the music industry and has cemented himself as a cultural icon. This year's appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone feels like the beginning of a career appreciation, which could include a Rock Hall nomination. Before the Nominating Committee meeting, Paul Shaffer disclosed that he would be advocating for Nelson this year.
- Sonic Youth - Recent solo albums from Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have kept Sonic Youth in the conversation, thirty-one years after their landmark album, Daydream Nation. Their lack of mainstream name recognition makes them a tough sell for those wanting big names for the HBO show, but their influence is too great to keep them off the ballot forever.
- Whitney Houston - Janet Jackson's induction this year now allows the Rock Hall to turn its attention to other megastars of the 80s. Houston's popularity and influence over subsequent generation's singers can't be overstated.
- Notorious B.I.G. - There are many Rock Hall worthy artists becoming newly eligible this year, but like 2Pac a few years ago, Biggie stands out as a hip hop icon and should get a nomination.
- Oasis - If the Rock Hall wants months of free publicity, put Oasis on the ballot when Liam Gallagher is promoting his new album.
- The Doobie Brothers - Many of us thought the Doobie Brothers were going to be nominated last year after Tom Johnston indicated that a Rock Hall induction is in their management's plans. The band's manager is Irving Azoff, who just happens to be on the Rock Hall Foundation's Board of Directors. What a system.
Artists who have recently been nominated...
[Predictions posted September 23, 2019]
Artists are eligible for the Rock
Hall 25 years after releasing their first record (anyone
with a record released up through 1994). Future Rock Legends lists eligible artists by first year of eligiblity or alphabetically.

Here's something I always do to make an induction happen soon as possible for certain names who have -to me at the least- enough requirements to meet the criteria. I don't just buy their music, I stream them on Spotify one name per day or more. Posted by The Dude on Monday, 08/19/2019 @ 12:11pm |
My 2020 Predictions will be coming soon, both on my blog and on here. I've got at least 21 acts that I thought of, now I'm planning on narrowing it down to 15 or 16. Not gonna lie, I don't think Motley Crue deserves to be in at ALL. However, there's a good 99.9% chance there gonna get nominated, then inducted. That seems to be the new trend, along with Journey, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard. Posted by Michael on Wednesday, 08/21/2019 @ 20:20pm |

So I will now get into some details about my list. There is the obvious snub Of Jethro Tull. But right Now I will focus on four 80s acts. I have been persuaded to predict B52s. Their career goes back to about 1979 with Rock Lobster and Planet Claire. 2 fine tunes I know. Wild Planet was a big breakthrough in 1980 and there is also Whammy. I don’t know that 3rd album very well but I know it’s notable in New Wave. So that makes B52s Well deserves. I personally like some of their stuff. Posted by Ben on Friday, 08/23/2019 @ 08:38am |
From Wikipedia: Posted by Enigmaticus on Friday, 08/23/2019 @ 10:43am |
I still don't get why guys like Enig finds the term "New Wave" to be meaningless. When I think of that, I think of bands who combined elements of rock, pop, punk and electronic music. Even when they sometimes play a completely different genre, we go with other terms like synth-pop, Gothic rock, and simply just 80's alternative. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 08/23/2019 @ 10:57am |

Funny thing is, I hear more blowback about the doors opening for new wave than I have for the inductions of more pop oriented (Madonna, Prince) and rap/hip hop. The electronic stuff is every bit as part of the fabric of rock and roll as all the organs were in the 60s and 70s. Someone not knowledgeable of technology may swear the Who was using a synthesizer for "Won't Get Fooled Again". The Cure is just the start of the New Wave bands getting their due...well except the Cars beat them already, but are more universally accepted. Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and New Order/Joy Division are on the cusp Posted by K-Dawg on Friday, 08/23/2019 @ 16:07pm |

My guess they select Depeche Mode & The Eurythmics from the 80's. Duran Duran is on my 2020-2021 list. I like Alex call on Tommy James. I'm really considering him. He fits my 1960's possibility although I have Procol Harum. The most difficult decision is choosing among Phil Collins, Sting, and Steve Winwood. Now Steve Winwood has been around since 1963 like Cher. That's incredible longevity! I'm thinking Peter, Paul, Mary this year. Over 30+ years no nomination. Time to right that injustice. Mariah vs. Whitney is interesting with the dead or alive thing. Gram Parsons has been dead around 46 years now. He missed his window for induction. There's no hurry to indict him unfortunately. I'm hoping for Willie Nelson but no nomination yet. Confused on that one. Liking Smashing Pumpkins this year. George Thorogood intrigues me with carrying the blues sound when some of the blues legends were winding down some in 80's and 90's. Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails appear strong favorites for nomination. KING 👑 Posted by KING on Saturday, 08/24/2019 @ 18:55pm |

My representation of Electronic music on the Ballot is Kraftwerk. I see them as the first Major act of Electronic music. They were certainly High tech in their Time. Its my guess that they would be the synth group nominated for 2020. Kraftwerk seems to be getting a Push the last couple years. Things evolved for Electronic music after that. Posted by Ben on Sunday, 08/25/2019 @ 09:19am |
Radiohead & The Cure's inductions would open the door for fellow alternative bands like The Smiths,Joy Division/New Order,NIN, RATM, Smashing Pumpkins,Weezer,Oasis,Depeche Mode & others. Snubs like Classic & Metal Bands can be undeniably be a concept for later bands who are already in the RRHOF, it's very provoking & wrong in many ways. I hope the nominees will be 20 artists I hope 10 of them would be inducted. Posted by Navonte Robertson on Sunday, 08/25/2019 @ 09:59am |

I think it's very well time for NIN to get in. While the New Wave is getting its due in the 80s, Nine Inch Nails really is the band that inspired the "nu metal" movement in the 90s and 2000s. I know that "Nu Metal" has as much of a fictional name to some as "New Wave", but they are definitely genres of some sort Posted by K_Dawg on Sunday, 08/25/2019 @ 21:03pm |

OK - I've really been struggling this year compared to most on finalizing my predictions. So I resorted to a bit of data analysis to help guide my direction. I looked at the past 5 years of nominations for some trend analysis. Note that in doing that analysis, I lumped together nominations for Chaka Khan and nominations for Rufus featuring Chaka Khan Posted by Shrek on Monday, 08/26/2019 @ 16:22pm |
That inductee list (should it happen, hoping it WON'T) would be even lamer than the 2018 class, Depeche notwithstanding... Posted by KXB on Monday, 08/26/2019 @ 19:16pm |
Would be nice if Pat Benatar, never a critical favorite, received some recognition. I mean, acts like Bon Jovi and Journey should have opened those floodgates. :-) Posted by JR on Monday, 08/26/2019 @ 20:00pm |

KXB - I didn't try to build the "coolest" list; it's a guess based on my analysis of HOF trends. The fact that you find the list to be lame *and* you feel last year's choices were lame would suggest that maybe I'm on the right track! Posted by Shrek on Tuesday, 08/27/2019 @ 13:42pm |
It seems like it had been the general consensus among many voters on this site that the major “prog†artists had needed to take a rest from the Nomination list. So, last year instead of seeing Jethro Tull, or Supertramp, or Emerson Lake & Palmer, or King Crimson, or even Procol Harum, or Kansas on the ballot, we had Roxy Music, Radiohead, Todd Rundgren and The Zombies, instead. Fortunately, Roxy Music, The Zombies and Radiohead had still been inducted and had added several more votes for prog artists, albeit in the form of crossover prog, instead. Radiohead and Roxy Music are frequently discussed in PROG Magazine. The Zombies have already been been debated on Prog Archives as being a proto-prog, or baroque pop act by other sources. Posted by Enigmaticus on Tuesday, 08/27/2019 @ 19:50pm |
Here's the thing...you DON'T have to induct (or even nominate) every freakin' 'prog' act in existence! Posted by KXB on Tuesday, 08/27/2019 @ 20:05pm |

I think that Jethro Tull will be on the ballot this year, Enig. I'm holding to that one. As for the rest? I mean, there's been so many genres getting spotlights, this year I see them breaking with the hip hop slot, but Whitney arguably will get those voters. As far as other acts go, it kind of convolutes with the radio-friendly pop rock of the 70s that all the classic rock clingers-on clamor for, be it Foreigner, the Doobies, Bad Company, and even Boston. It's hard to see if they will split it up. Posted by K-Dawg on Tuesday, 08/27/2019 @ 20:22pm |

Enigmaticus - If you look at my suggestions for this year's nominees, Kraftwerk started out as a European prog fusion type band using fairly traditional instruments before they moved to the ambient-electronic direction. I actually like their early prog-fusion type work better than I do their more famous electronic style stuff. Posted by Shrek on Wednesday, 08/28/2019 @ 12:19pm |

Since Richie normally asks us what would the future classes would look like a decade from now, I thought about answering it again with some changes and more additions, but I'm only gonna look at the next five years. I now believe we'll be getting seven acts inducted or more yearly, and I'm also now expecting Iron Maiden to get inducted in 2021 after Motley Crue. They're showing potential of being Kiosk winners once this year's ballot ends on December. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 08/30/2019 @ 11:33am |

I really appreciate the replies on my predictions of the next classes for the Hall. Krawftwerk is on my Wildcard list when it comes to possibilities. There was a rumor floating around when they had enough votes to get in, but the management decided to go with Janet Jackson in order to show a bit of racial diversity rather than having a total of eight acts for our newest class. It might take while to bring in some more synth and sample players for those guys to get in. Posted by The Dude on Saturday, 08/31/2019 @ 14:17pm |

Well Hell no for this year. But Alan Parsons could more easily be Inducted alone in Musical Excellence category. He is an excellent producer. He also was an Engineer for Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of the Moon if memory serves correctly. It will take some time for this to happen too. But simply Inducting Alan Parsons Project is Not likely. I am Not really following the Terrestrial radio discussion. I like and listened a lot to Terrestrial radio 1979-1989. The station I listened most was WNEW-FM here in New York. A lot of the Rock acts inducted and nominated reflect what old Rock stations like WNEW played. I mostly go with my Library when it comes to music. Similarly to me classic rock is an historical library of rock music from the Beatles all the to the 90s. When it comes to the Beatles, Stones and the Who it includes the early stuff. Essentially this means 1963-1998. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 11:10am |
Muttley Crust is a joke band (and scumbags as people), and the Corporate Rock Hall is a joke/fixed organization, so they really deserve each other... Posted by KXB on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 12:07pm |
How do ya explain Guns N Roses? They were trouble making, bad boyish, and so-called "politically incorrect" as Motley Crue, and no one complain they got inducted in 2012. Both of those bands embodied the dangerousness of rock music unlike like all the critic-friendly bands who are way too hipster to tie into "manliness" like Radiohead, The Smiths and even Nirvana to a lesser extent. Posted by The Dude on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 12:34pm |
I don't think any of these are 100% guarantees, and practically all of them could be replaced by a similar artist. I don't even know how many artists will be nominated this year. Nevertheless, here's my predictions. Posted by Quinn on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 17:09pm |
Sorry, but the so-called 'Death Bump' (which is mostly a myth, anyway) won't help Buzzcocks (deserving as they may be) any more than it will (ever) help the Monkees... Posted by KXB on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 18:09pm |
Regarding Jethro Tull, Posted by Will N. on Wednesday, 09/4/2019 @ 23:42pm |
Jethro Tull's hits alone...they have one of the most seminal guitar intros in "Aqualung", and such classics as "Bungle in the Jungle", "Locomotive Breath", "Thick as a Brick". Their style is unique in no small part thanks to Ian and they are critical darlings. It is long past time to put them in, the thing is--they could be the last major prog pioneer to get in. I know there are some who like Procol Harum, and honestly they have a very good shot. The experimental bands will get passed over more times than not by the pop heavy rock bands like Foreigner and Boston. Posted by K-Dawg on Thursday, 09/5/2019 @ 01:44am |
Procol Harum has at least 3 strong advocates on the Nom Com and The Zombies backers will shift to Procol Harum. Not really rocket science. I don't see Jethro Tull being nominated when Bad Company, Procol Harum, and T. Rex appear to be my possibilities. Plus Blue Oyster Cult, Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, J. Geils Band will receive consideration. My guess Ian Hunter will take Todd Rundgren's place. Ian Hunter is beloved and 80 years old. You saw Brian May and Joe Elliott's admiration for him and others. Toughest call is Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. KING Posted by KING on Thursday, 09/5/2019 @ 05:32am |

Looking at the recent update on the Kiosk. It’s very possible Motley Crue could make it to more than 3000 votes before the nominees pop up next month. As much I want Iron Maiden to beat Blink-182 on the second spot, it seems too late for that to happen (not even their ongoing tour in North America made a difference for them smh). Odd that only one person is predicting blink-182. They're in second place now, like Def leppard was last year and were also high up (4th or 3rd?) last year. Don't underestimate the Rock Hall's recent trend towards populism. Posted by Follower on Monday, 09/9/2019 @ 16:29pm |
That because Leppard is an arena-level band unlike Blink. I would believe it if they were on least on a Green Day or Pearl Jam level in terms of popularity or were on a similar critical acclaim level as Radiohead. But predicting them to be one of this year's nominees is still very unrealistic. Posted by The Dude on Monday, 09/9/2019 @ 16:47pm |

Great to see your picks, Richie. That would be nice if War and Judas Priest would return to the ballot soon. I noticed there are not a lot of "never before nominated" acts on your list, as I counted 3. Do you expect several (more than usual) to return? Not judging, just wondering. Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 09/12/2019 @ 02:13am |
richie - I think 13 retread nominees is too many based on any trends we have seen in the past. But with that many retreads on your predictions, you could easily score a good number of "correct" picks since there usually are quite a few retreads. As my earlier post pointed out, the fewest over the past five years was 8, and 9-10 has been the norm. Posted by Shrek on Thursday, 09/12/2019 @ 12:26pm |

It's pretty hard to take the results of the Kiosk with any degree of seriousness. Analyzing the Kiosk results shows Motley Crue, the top vote getter, to have garnered about 4% of the vote. So, 96% of the people voting at the Kiosk chose someone other than Motley Crue to be in the RRHOF. Posted by Eric Tompkins on Thursday, 09/12/2019 @ 19:38pm |
Most of the guests who voted on the kiosk have a casual taste of music who only listen to terrestrial radio for the reliance of companionship, and they don’t even have the time to do some research on the Hall itself and certain acts they wanna see inducted. That’s why Freddie is on the top ten other than the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Posted by The Dude on Thursday, 09/12/2019 @ 20:42pm |

Jethro Tull has to be in the Hall of Fame. Forget the 5 Top Ten albums (2 were #1) they were innovative in their sound, lyrics, and musicality. There has never been anyone before them or since that provided this combination. Ian Anderson was a stage presence and weaponized the flute as a rock instrument. Their contribution to the evolving development and scope of rock and what it provides fans can not be underestimated. Posted by kgfsr03 on Friday, 09/13/2019 @ 19:26pm |

Blink-182 won't be nominated. A few Committee members expressed that Def Leppard and Stevie Nicks were high on the nominees list and coincidental that Stevie Nicks and Def Leppard were top of the voters RRHOF kiosk. Just worked out that way. Iron Maiden has been Top 5 kiosk 2 years in a row and a notable snub. I see Iron Maiden being nominated in the metal slot. This cycle 2019-2020. Dave Mathews is one that really hasn't been mentioned much, but if they are going to not nom a 90s harder rock band, such as NIN or the Pumpkins, they might go in that direction. I am pretty sure Rage is getting another nomination, although we could wait a year or two to get them in; while they no doubt are innovative, the only direct link that they really need to have is Linkin Park, who won't be eligible for 5 more years... Posted by K-Dawg on Monday, 09/23/2019 @ 03:13am |
Rage might have some metal influences, but I think this won’t turn the voters off this time since Tom Morello is very well respected within the industry musically. As for DMB, I think it might take a few years for those guys to get in. The Hall wants to focus on Rage, NIN, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and maybe Jane’s Addiction, Beck, and Oasis first. Katherine Boyd works for SiriusXM and is one of the weekend hosts on Classic Vinyl, which plays 60s/70s Classic Rock. The Classic Vinyl station is broadcast live from the Rock Hall's Museum. She is an absolutely wonderful and nice person. She provided updates on the HOF kiosk on her Twitter account, which let me to message FRL who follows her activity closely (when it comes to the top go-getters on the kiosk), and never hesitates to help. Good call Shrek! Usually people have until October 1 to write down their Final Final ballots. I had Willie Nelson as 1 of my final cuts and on my RRHOF Special Awards. Willie Nelson is added to my ballot as well. Maybe, Willie Nelson can be grandfathered onto everyone's final list if they accept that. KING 👑 Posted by KING on Monday, 09/23/2019 @ 17:27pm |

I'm not the biggest fan of their proclamations. I will have to go back and post my predictions before I can really dive into the meat of this, but there's too many there I feel that delve into directions that might not be worthy with omissions sitting there that they haven't answered yet, which in recent years has been their trend to clean up. Oasis, Cyndi Lauper, and of course the J Geils band are the ones that stick out to me at first glance. I do like Sonic Youth, the Doobies, Whitney Houston and Beck, but where is Kraftwerk? There are others that should go in, but they need to be on the ballot every year until they get in. Posted by K-Dawg on Tuesday, 09/24/2019 @ 04:51am |
I was just looking at the FRL predictions. There aren’t a lot I agree with. I can’t agree with Cyndi Lauper. Very talented artist of the 80s. I am sticking with Pat Benatar as far as Woman in Rock for the ballot. They listed Doobie Brothers. I can agree with that one but I think with 70s rock there will be a Prog direction with Jethro Tull. The Hall doesn’t want to flood the Ballot with 70s Rock. Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 09/24/2019 @ 10:27am |
If my prediction is true, then we’ve only got fourteen days left til the nominees are reveal. Ben, I like your picks. I have a lot of similar choices, but also some variations to your list. We are very close to being on the same page for nominations. I am still narrowing down my field, but I know the zero hour for the list of nominees is fast approaching. I also like quite a few of Remy 10 choices for nominees. However, some factors previously stated by FRL regulars hold some water with me. I believe it may have been K-Dawg that stated we have a major logjam of Classic Rockers/70s R&B/Funk/80s Rock that needs to be broken up and get that river flowing again. Someone else stated that they will take a break from Rap/Hip-Hop for this upcoming class. I am taking into account these outlooks, and what I am seeing is a more Rock oriented class, with some Brit Rock, but not as much as last year. 2 or 3 more women artists to get nominated, some alternative hard Rock, some fan favorites, and probably a few obscurities. Because Nelson and Biggie have both been heavily suggested/ by both Paul Shaffer and John Sykes in interviews. Shaffer said he's pushing for Nelson, while Sykes said that Biggie has a good chance. However, it doesn't mean they are confirmed. It just means they have a bigger chance of getting a nomination, and judging by how huge their names are in the industry, an induction if they do get nominated. Don't know much this means, but I was browsing on Twitter and was looking at the Rock Hall's twitter page and looked at all of the Twitter accounts they follow. Found a lot of currently eligible artists not yet nominated by the Hall that they follow on Twitter. Makes you wonder if any of these names came up at the recent meeting or in future ones.... Posted by Donnie on Wednesday, 10/2/2019 @ 05:22am |
Ok, I'll try to post this again. What act do you think is a shoo-in for nomination/induction from FRL's list and which one do you think is too far out of left field? I'm skipping Willie Nelson because I think that far and away will be a universal favorite. Posted by K-Dawg on Wednesday, 10/2/2019 @ 08:18am |

Confirmed 2020 nominees: Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 10/2/2019 @ 12:34pm |
It's interesting Skyes mentioned Dave Matthews Band, but I'm not expecting it to happen at least for now. While they're more closer to be on the Nirvana, Green Day, and Pearl level of commercial success than most bands from the 90's, but It's starting to look the Hall wants to induct Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters (eligible next year), and maybe Jane's Addiction, Beck, Wilco, and Oasis first. I think Trent Reznor's awesome presentation of the Cure at the recent ceremony in Brooklyn and the addition of Radiohead shows enough proof IMO. Posted by The Dude on Wednesday, 10/2/2019 @ 13:11pm |
Roy just because those artists were mentioned in recent interviews does not necessarily mean they are confirmed nominees. We will have to wait and see. Posted by Greg F on Wednesday, 10/2/2019 @ 15:28pm |

In about a couple weeks or so, we should expect the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee to announce the nominees for the actual Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Now, with RRHOF board member John Sykes succeeding executive chairman and fellow inductee Jann Wenner; I am going to guess the types of artists nominated this year will be different than in years past. Of course, I think the fan ballot and the Fan Kiosk votes will take some precedence over who gets nominated and eventually inducted. In that regard, while I don't think each artist named by Future Rock Legends as a predicted nominee will get nominated; it's fair to say Motley Crue and Iron Maiden are locks for nomination. Beck I assume will also be nominated, as will Todd Rundgren and Whitney Houston and Christopher Wallace/The Notorious B.I.G. Perhaps Cyndi Lauper gets a nod, but we shall see. Posted by Lax36 on Thursday, 10/3/2019 @ 21:10pm |
So many people seem to put stock in kiosk voting, FRL predictions, who mentioned who, connections with corporate power influences and favoritism. What ever happened to supporting the bands and musical artists that are most deserving? With all subjective Politics and biased leanings toward certain artists aside, the support for potential nominees/inductees should be based on what that musical artist has achieved and contributed in their Rock career, and how they have provided influence. Not some bogus Kiosk that favors Blink 182 as second favorite. That seems to compromise the credibility of that entire premise. And it is not about who made a movie or wrote a book, or has a show that some rich corporate entity owns. Clear Channel has had a major hand in the ruination of Rock and Roll for over a decade now, by only playing about 0.0001% of available Rock and Roll on their generic, monopolized version of the radio station industry. Posted by Will N. on Friday, 10/4/2019 @ 00:06am |
I'm not sure how many I speak for, but for me I prefer to predict based entirely off kiosk voting, who mentioned who, and who has connections. Rarely does the hall put in someone who has several great achievements, but rather who the community is most fond and familiar of. Not to say this is a bad thing, given this gave us the inductions of Journey, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (who were questionable inductees in my opinion, but eh), etc. Basing any predictions off of influence and achievements right now is, sadly, just wishful thinking. Then again, the Hall has been inducting some long overdue artists lately, so who knows? Maybe I should just shut my mouth and wait for the nominees to pop up. lmao. Of those 34 artists, 6 are not in, but two of them only became old enough this year. Biggie most likely will get in, Oasis could get in, maybe Mariah Carey could get in, but I doubt the others will. Enig, if you let your lack of knowledge of Biggie keep you from predicting him, that's on you. I'm not versed in his music either, but he was on my radar as an eventual slam dunk as soon as 2Pac was announced as an inductee. You may literally be the only member of this community to not predict Biggie. Posted by Philip on Monday, 10/7/2019 @ 21:10pm |
Now that the news of Nominations to be released soon, and with inside information being leaked, I suppose I should post these picks/predictions now. I have been tweaking and updating my list for a few weeks, and now I see 4 artists have been stated to be on the ballot. 2 of them are on my list and 2 are not. I also did not pick Biggie, not because I feel he will not be nominated, I am just inconclusive on his credentials, and I also excluded more newly eligible artists, although I am sure a few will be nominated, I cannot be sure which ones. So I am sticking more with who I believe is most qualified and deserving, not who I think the committee will select. Posted by Will N. on Tuesday, 10/8/2019 @ 02:30am |

I just want to say like almost all the lists on here I am proud of the diversity. I am originally and still am an Old Rock fan. I am certainly Rooting for Pat Benatar,Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jethro Tull, King Crimson. I do also like B52s and Duran Duran to some extent. That creates some diversity. And I also Am rooting for Motley Crue. But I also predict such acts as Kraftwerk,Marvelettes,Willie Nelson, Notorious BiG. I do love some Willie Nelson. But I would Not say I am well Versed in BIG. But to be fair if Tupac Shakur was nominated and Inducted then BIG is logical. Some people may Not expect I dig Tina Turner and Dionne Warwick. I do. I root for them too. A lot of my picks I am rooting for. The key to predicting a Ballot is diversity. I go beyond my Tastes for that. Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 10/9/2019 @ 15:34pm |

By not nominating the Runaways the trailblazing all girl band they still are snubbing women. Also what kind of hall of fame puts rap before the doobie brothers? one of the most popular bands of all time? Iron maiden? , bad company? , kansas, jethro tull? , judas priest, styx even. So now we know that the Hall will Announce the Real nominees on Oct. 15. I expect a lot of acts from the 1980s to be on the Ballot. That's been the trend in the last 3 years. I feel I have diversity even within the 80s. It's all on my List but I predict B52s,Duran Duran, Eurythmics and the Smiths as far as New Wave/80s alt. Also I expect Pat Benatar, Motley Crue and Tina Turner. I am not a huge New Wave fan. Some is Ok I have said and they have nominated a few each year in Recent years. I'm surprised FLR didn't show us Troy's 25 Worst Rock Hall Inductees. Posted by Follower on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 00:55am |
Steve Winwood will be a 2x inductee sooner or later. He's had a long and distinguished career and still working. It's strange there hasn't been more momentum for Winwood. Interesting Cher and Steve Winwood started out in 1963. That's 3 generations ago. 56 years ago. So much has changed musically. Thinking of some other 2x inductees like Jeff Beck, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood not that out of place. My guess Steve Winwood either has some kind of ties or performed with most of the legendary bands 60's and 70's. Master musician guitar, keyboards, singer. KING Posted by KING on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 07:52am |
I love Dionne & think she should be in the Hall. However, they've had many years to nominate her. Our future rock hall does not have her in, though she is a nominee this year. Posted by Paul in KY on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 11:03am |
Steve Winwood's second induction should and will be with the Spencer Davis Group, not his solo career, yet. I can see Van Zandt nominating them. The next Small Faces/Faces type. Posted by Roy on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 12:11pm |
I don't know about Spencer Davis getting in. While "Gimme Some Lovin" is one of the greatest songs of any era, they've saturated the Hall with all the 60s groups. I hope, and I know it's very possible it might not be the case, that the bulk of nominees are from the 80s. Sprinkle in some 70s and 90s, but the 60s are almost all done for a bit. I realize I have the Monkees on my list and I'm a proponent of Herman's Hermits, but...yeah Posted by K-Dawg on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 14:13pm |

My absolute final predictions for the 2020 Rock Hall nominees are: Posted by richie on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 18:18pm |
Wow richie. We are quite similar in our guesses. I actually counted 13 picks we have in common. I didn't pick Kraftwerk and The New York Dolls. I strongly considered both and would not be surprised to see either one in the ballot. The others I had were Cyndi Lauper, Oasis and Richie Havens. I had 16 total. Posted by remy 10 on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 18:38pm |
OK, I'll add my 2 cents to this topic. I will keep the list at 20 despite the literally dozens of acts who should be nominated or already enshrined. Posted by DANIEL R RIVARD on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 21:21pm |
And when they ask, "What does thinking outside the Trunk mean?", I shall point to DANIEL R RIVARD's post and say, "The exact opposite of this." Posted by Philip on Sunday, 10/13/2019 @ 23:34pm |
It reads like a list of a classic rock station's wet dream. Some, like Scorpions and Bad Company, are acknowledged as good but not yet in the breath of the hot trenders for the RRHOF nom slots. Foghat is an interesting case, because they were huge with "Slow Ride" and "I Just Wanna Make Love to You", but this is the first time I've heard their name come up; they have an interesting case. An original list, but given trends, I see about 2/3 of them being viable candidates, but there is now way the RRHOF is going on a strict 70s album rock list in this cycle, nor probably anytime in the near future. Compelling cases though for most of these groups. Posted by K-Dawg on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 02:12am |

The apparent nominees for the 2020 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame so far Posted by Roy on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 07:44am |
Other highly likely names include Duran Duran, The Go-Gos, Motley Crue, Pat Benatar and Whitney Houston. These were the big names featured on the Twitter teaser. I can't see the Hall highlighting tweets like "Duran Duran sold 100 million albums and ...." and then not including them on the ballot. Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 07:55am |
Teaser also highlighted Iron Maiden. They'd seem like the most likely metal pick (especially after Judas Priest "did poorly" in the voting according to a nom com member). I'm just a little wary when it comes to metal and the Hall. Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 07:57am |
Man, if all of this is actually true this ballot would be beyond stacked. Imagine Willie Nelson, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, The Go-Gos, Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston, Biggie, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, etc. all on the same ballot. Posted by remy10 on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 08:12am |
I would also imagine that Casper's discovery would not totally discount Chaka Khan solo from being nominated. I always thought her better chance of nomination/induction this year would come without Rufus. Posted by remy10 on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 08:15am |
I've been pretty confident that LL Cool J would not be on the ballot because Notorious BIG and Chaka Khan would not be on the ballot because Whitney Houston (and/or Tina Turner). Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 08:20am |

I would honestly be shocked if Rage Against the Machine weren't nominated again this year. It always felt like they were just next in line after Radiohead, but when Radiohead shockingly failed to get inducted their first year, it pushed RATM back a year as well. In actuality, my last vacation had been those 3 rain drenched days in Tokyo, Japan almost 32.5 years ago, but I digress. Tomorrow will be the day which we have been waiting for, for oh so many, many years. I have promised myself a vacation in the next 2.5- 3.0 years, if certain artists are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. It had first started with Rush being inducted. Then Yes, Electric Light Orchestra and The Moody Blues had deserved to be inducted also. Therefore in 2018, the inductions of the "holy trinity" of prog (Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues) had been complete, but Duran Duran had still not received a nomination, nor had Carly Simon, nor Sade, nor the Doobie Brothers. From the sound of things, this will be a light classic rock representation. The rock fans on the RRHOF Facebook page are being their usual "SJW" selves that anything that doesn't embody only the first word in the HOF doesn't belong. They are going to be so disappointed when this list comes out. Some don't even see Depeche Mode, Duran Duran or NIN as worthy. I'm of course assuming there that first-timers means first year eligibles and not first year nominated because there are always more than two first year nominated. Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 18:52pm |
I suppose they could be ignoring the live album and starting from Matthews's studio debut there so it might still be DMB but it's a possibility that was a hint towards something else instead. Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 18:58pm |
I do like what I see about a lot of these "leaks", especially about Depeche Mode and Whitney Houston. I do realize there's a lot of older groups still that have a good case, but these 2 are my personal missions to get inducted this year. Similar to when I agonized for 4 years when NWA patiently waited... Posted by K-Dawg on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 19:12pm |

The only hint Motley Crue left out is their response to the Kiosk and massive fan support on Facebook and Twitter thanks to the Dirt on Netflix and even the rerelease of Dr. Feelgood. Not expecting any report articles about them like it happened to Pearl Jam before the announcement. But they'll be one of the big surprises once the nominees pop up tomorrow morning, since they'll easily win the fan ballot on a landslide. Posted by The Dude on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 19:50pm |
It won't be the Dave Matthews Band. BIG is going to be a shoo in. Beck may get a nod over DMB. There does seem to be buzz about MC. Same with any potential female nominee. Kraftwerk deserves a 2nd chance just on the controversy with the switch that went from them to Janet. Posted by Timothy Pernell on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 19:59pm |
I'm just curious, how much of the ballot is typically first time nominees? Right now if we're going by the leaks (which I'm still taking with a grain of salt), the only ones who have appeared previously are Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and J Geils Band. That seems a little unusual. Posted by Quinn on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 20:05pm |
How high do you think the chances of NIN getting nominated are? Posted by Michael on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 20:58pm |
There's a lot of bland populist stuff among these "leaks"...Whitney Houston, Dave Matthews Band, (yes) The Go-Gos, J Geils Band...and then returning nominees are never that exciting although it looks like the doors are open for Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk to be inducted soon. Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 21:15pm |
I also find an Iron Maiden nomination to be pointless as they'll be one of the least likely names on the ballot to get inducted. If Judas Priest reportedly did HORRIBLY on their ballot with all of their classic rock hits, why would Maiden fare any better? They aren't getting in. Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 21:17pm |
I'll be stunned and flabbergasted if Dave Matthews Band gets nominated before Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Beck. Posted by Donnie on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 21:34pm |
Most of the Rock Hall committee are full of Boomers who go on about blues-based bands and '60s groups so of course there's gonna be a bias against metal bands such as Iron Maiden. I think Motley Crue will be the one nominated, it's hard to get two metal groups nominated once. That'll be like T. Rex and the New York Dolls (another group that should get nominated due to the influence on AMERICAN glam and punk rockers) getting nominated at the same time (and I rather Todd Rundgren get in before the NYD's anyway). Posted by Timothy Pernell on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 21:55pm |
So, this is the main URL for the nominees this year: Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 21:57pm |
Yeah, the Hall's committee is definitely moving past the 60s and the classic rock acts of the 70s (Bad Company, Doobie Brothers). Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:02pm |
"they'll easily win the fan ballot on a landslide." Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:09pm |
Dave Matthews Band and their yuppie cult will easily lead to a fan vote victory if they are on the ballot. Posted by Casper on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:20pm |
Yeah, but Gen X doesn't care nearly as much about this as the boomers. Although maybe the boomers will start caring less when fewer classic rock bands get nominated, true... Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:28pm |

@ Sean Posted by The Dude on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:44pm |
I think that either Pat Benatar, The Doobie Brothers, Duran Duran, Foreigner or The Monkees will win the online fan vote if any of them are nominated this year, not Motley Crue, As much as I love them, I just don't think that they're deserving of a Rock Hall induction, so because of that, I just can't see them ever getting nominated (let alone being inducted) IMO. Posted by richie on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:54pm |
I'm just thinking of demographics here and style. I associate Benatar more with the late '70s/early '80s arena rock era (Boston/Journey/Foreigner) stylistically than with the glossy MTV '80s as I do for Crue. '70s-style arena rock dominates classic rock airplay. '80s MTV acts generally don't. How many acts that debuted AFTER MTV get consistent classic rock airplay everywhere? Just SRV, R.E.M., and GNR really. Lots of classic rock stations don't play hair metal (other than Bon Jovi and Def Leppard) or grunge, although maybe that's changed since I largely stopped listening to them ten years ago. Classic rock radio addicts primarily vote on this, not MTV types. That's why I think Crue is being overestimated, and critics hate Crue more than they hated Bon Jovi and Def Leppard too. Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 22:57pm |
Oh right, or Van Halen. Van Halen is certainly in the core classic rock canon. Bon Jovi basically just has the three Slippery When Wet singles played, and Def Leppard gets about 6 or 7 songs. But when I was growing up in the late '90s/early '00s and listening to a lot of classic rock radio, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Whitesnake got played consistently, along with hair-adjacent stuff like GNR, Geffen-era Aerosmith, and Scorpions. Crue got 0 songs. Yeah, it may have changed... Posted by Sean on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 23:00pm |

Like to see Sammy Hagar receive a 2nd induction down the road for Montrose and his solo work. He has some gold and platinum records as a Solo artist and 1 of my FAV vocalists. I don't see Depeche Mode & Duran Duran on the same ballot. Depeche Mode looks like a lock this year. The Cure's 10 extra votes, maybe Def Leppard's and Roxy Music votes will push Depeche Mode over the top. It's possible if J. Geils Band on the ballot...Maybe they won't be given much direct competition. Whitney Houston could be a possibility if Chaka Khan hasn't been getting a good vote total. I think MC5 was dead last in the FAN voting last year. Don't see them returning. Iron Maiden has a good chance for Induction if nominated. They have a swath of loyal fans around the world and respect from the music voters. Excited to see the ballot Oct 15. KING Posted by KING on Monday, 10/14/2019 @ 23:49pm |

Both groups should receive votes from many of the 70's groups. I mentioned a few days ago about Thin Lizzy. Another thing I failed to mention is the strong bond of the Irish musicians. U2,Van Morrison and others could throw votes Thin Lizzy's direction. U2 is very interesting. They formed in 1976 around the Time of Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak. Lynott was raised in Dublin .
