So true. The BELMONTS should have gone in with Dion. He could have gotten a second induction for his solo career...but the GROUP should have gone in FIRST.

That was the Rock Hall's FIRST mistake.

The SECOND mistake was not inducting them with the Great Retroactive Group Induction of 2012. When THE MIRACLES, MIDNIGHTERS, FAMOUS FLAMES, CRICKETS,COMETS and BLUE CAPS got in, the BELMONTS should have gotten in...again . The timeline, and the opportunity , would have been PERFECT ,because they, like the other 6 groups , were all active in the Fifties and early Sixties. The "Great Hall" blew it...TWICE.

The THIRD MISTAKE will be if they induct them NOW...because, unless they induct them as MAIN PERFORMERS, which, they indeed WERE, The Hall will induct them in the "MUSICAL EXCELLENCE" category...FOREVER BRANDING THEM AS "SIDEMEN" to Dion...which of course, is GROSSLY UNFAIR.

The BELMONTS were NOT "SIDEMEN" for DION. They were ALL part of the SAME GROUP...just like the six other classic groups inducted in 2012.Just as Smokey said when he inducted them back then:

"These are NOT "Backing Groups" .

"These ARE the Groups"

POSSIBLE MISTAKE NUMBER FOUR is potentially the WORST ...

Not inducting them AT ALL...so as to cover The Rock Hall's own SCREW-UP.

Yes The Belmonts should have been inducted with Dion but let's not forget the other group who backed Dion on some of his big hits The Del Satins. They backed Dion on Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, Lovers Who Wander and Ruby Baby.

Too many of these groups have been forgotten!!!

Bill, out of curiosity... I asked you this before in a different scenario, but just wondering what you think here: if it had been Dion And The Belmonts inducted in 1989, would you also have supported a solo induction for Dion in another class?

Yes. Dion had a HUGE career after The Belmonts.

But, keep in mind that The Belmonts ALSO continued to chart hits an additional 3 years AFTER Dion left the group.
All the MORE reason why The Belmonts should be inducted.

were STILL ALIVE.
Since then, Carlo and Fred have died. Only Angelo and Dion are still alive.AND DION IS ALREADY INDUCTED. Let's not wait until ANGELO is dead TOO.

I wish they had inducted Dion & The Belmonts together years ago. It was unfortunate for The Belmonts and as time passes...Groups like The Belmonts slowly fade into the horizon with 80's and 90's groups ready for induction. As Bill G has written, it probably ruins Dion's chance at a 2nd induction. They need to rectify The Belmonts situation, the Silver Bullet Band, and other situations like this. The same with Steve Miller Band where several musicians are left in the dark. KING
