List of Hip-Hop Acts that deserve induction Posted by TooLate on Monday, 03/31/2014 @ 00:05am |
Well, I was there when Kanye returned to Bonnaroo. Massive crowd at start of set, where he took the stage at 1007 pm. I have only heard a few Kanye songs, so I was unfamiliar with most all of his music. He did not allow the screens on both sides of What Stage to be used to show him (which I thought was sorta dicky, as when you are in the back, those screens give you your best view of artist/stage). He draped both sides of the stage in long white cloths, which got the super-VIPs out of their viewing area & into the sound tent (sorta liked that, as a whole lot of people up front had better seats than the toffs). The centerpiece of the stage was a tall 3 sided rectangle that showed various landscape scenes interspersed with him, though everything was in black & white & reverse imaged). He started out set wearing a face mask (ala Bjork, although a completely different type of mask). I was there for 1st 70 minutes & during that time he played maybe 5 songs that he interspersed with social commentary, his goals/motivations, and general rants about the haters, press, and the notorious 2008 fiasco. He was unapologetic about that. I left to see Mastodon, but if I wasn't going to see another act, I probably wouldn't have stayed much more anyway. As I left, there were throngs of people doing the same thing and acattered boos & jeers. Heard that the people up front (the pro-Kanyeites) were pleading with him to shut up & play his songs. He got great receptions when he actually played something. I predict it will be awhile before he returns to Bonnaroo. Posted by Paul in KY on Friday, 06/20/2014 @ 15:16pm |
oh, Hell no! Posted by Telarock on Monday, 07/14/2014 @ 11:41am |
Like Paul (in KY), I saw Kanye at Bonnaroo this summer and I was there to witness what I call 'a mixed bag in performance'. To everyone's surprise (myself included), he was able to headline, but not without controversy. Kanye's angered self-centered ego I can do without, but its always about the music. He is one of the very few in the last ten years to put out some great stuff in that genre. To see him perform live was a great thing. But his social rants had nearly everyone booing him. Once he played out the jams, all was right. I later had a conversation with one of his fans from Chicago (who is a frequent festival-goer), and he said that the rants were part of Kanye's concert act and not to be taken that seriously. Kanye does take the music very seriously, and that's why the fans and so-called professional critics love him. I hear he's even working on a project with Sir Paul McCartney. Posted by Jason Voigt on Friday, 09/5/2014 @ 18:07pm |
Maybe his new song writing partner, Paul McCartney will induct him! Lol but no lie he has my vote in a heartbeat. No one in music right now is as rock and roll as him. And I think McCartney realizes this. First ballot hall of famer for sure. Posted by Alec on Saturday, 04/11/2015 @ 00:21am |
7 great albums in a row now. Who else can say that they have been able to make 7 great albums without having a critical misstep and constantly reinventing and updating their sound? This is a Beatles level, Dylan level, Neil Young level, Springsteen level, Prince level, Bowie level accomplishment. By 2028 I bet all the old rockers that hate him because of his public interaction or who don't know crap about music nowadays (David Crosby, Bob Ezerin cough cough) will be dead by then. Lol by the way the hall is going though they'll probably be inducting almost all 80s acts at that time Posted by Alec on Wednesday, 02/24/2016 @ 18:53pm |
Kanye is trash, he hasn't made a good song since Power, and hasn't dropped a good album since Graduation. Sadly he will get in, so Yes... But his recent music still blows as much as his ego is large. Posted by Michael on Wednesday, 06/22/2016 @ 17:54pm |
Lots of Kanye hate here. As he said in 'power' "At the end of the day goddamn it I'm killin' this s** Posted by Cleveland Rocks on Wednesday, 02/22/2017 @ 02:22am |
look, i can't stand his new music and have never listen his "Good Stuff" but i can't say no, R&B has long history of impacting rock music and it has continued into 21st century, only R&B artist who can be compared to him these days is Jay-Z and just like him, you will see future rock artist say they were influenced by him. He’ll get in at first year by popularity when he becomes eligible. He is still having an overnight commercial success cause of his cartoonish attitude no matter how narcissistic and douchey he is. Posted by The Dude on Wednesday, 01/23/2019 @ 09:37am |
Regardless of how much of a nutcase he is probably one of the most influential people in popular music of the past 25 years. He is likely a first ballot lock. Posted by David on Friday, 08/2/2019 @ 13:48pm |

Kanye West once said his biggest regret in life is not being able to see himself perform live in concert like as an audience member... I regret not being in the audience of my everyday life cause that shit is like a friggin' Charlie Chaplin film watching me fumble through life Posted by Nice Guy Ry Guy on Monday, 12/2/2019 @ 20:33pm |
Since Kanye is offending the liberals right now, then it's possible the Nom Com might go with either Arcade Fire or Fall Out Boy as an FYE rather than him years from now. Posted by The Dude on Friday, 01/24/2020 @ 14:59pm |
Has anyone watched Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard? That was talent. They could actually sing and play the piano solo. Posted by Jo Davis on Sunday, 05/10/2020 @ 00:30am |
Comparing Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard to Kanye West and they are more talented is like saying Monet has more talent than Picasso because he uses finer brush strokes and a technique you prefer. I'd argue where Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard may have more talent singing and playing piano, BUT Kanye West is more talented when it comes to music production and creativity. Also RIP Little Richard, he was a true talent though! Posted by Nice Guy Ry Guy on Sunday, 05/10/2020 @ 08:42am |
You really have to put yourself in the mindset of the Rock Hall once he's eligible. There's not really a whole lot of essential artists left to induct. Once you reach the 2030's, rock would've already left the mainstream and less artists would have "legend" status. So either you induct the leftovers from the 60's/70's or change the definition of rock (a genre whose borders have become thinner and thinner over the years). It'll happen sooner or later, and at that point Kanye will be a more realistic choice. Even if you don't vibe with his music (which I do), his legacy is undoubted and he'll be in the Rock Hall not long after he's eligible. Posted by James on Friday, 08/28/2020 @ 18:45pm |
Aside from Rick Rubin, Kanye West is probably the only producer passionate about rock and hip-hop sounding good together. The marriage of both genres is the future of pop music. Posted by Dave Teves on Monday, 12/28/2020 @ 19:22pm |
It deserves to enter, I influence rock, hip hop, r & b artists, it is one of the biggest in recent years Posted by Leo on Sunday, 02/14/2021 @ 11:17am |
Hey I don't think Linkin Park should get in at all and while i technically think Kanye is a more crucial artist to the development of popular music than Jay Z and The White Stripes although i far prefer them as people. Jay Z will probably get in this year or next and The White Stripes will probably get in before 2029 which is when Kanye is eligible so you'll likely get your wish. Posted by David on Friday, 02/26/2021 @ 14:37pm |
At this point you are simply out of touch to deny hip-hop's influence. West himself stated in 2013 that 'rap is the new rock and roll, we are the new rockstars', and being at the forefront of that movement, it makes sense. And with West being the most prominent, acclaimed producer who not only writes the lyrics but produces the sonic acrobatics that define his chameleonic sound, from the soulful debut 'College Dropout' to the baroque orchestral 'Late Registration', to the influential 'black new wave (in West's own words) '808s and Heartbreak', to the progressive rock rap opera magnum opus 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy', to the defiant punk rock statement of 'Yeezus', and everything in between (including ventures into synthpop, gospel, and unabashed pop), West proves that he is the David Bowie of his generation (or as close as one can come). I see all these comments saying kanye is a egomaniac and a shirhead.I see that all of these commenters don't wanna listen to anything else than music from 100 years ago Kanye is a musical genius and a god in rap.Boomers don't get him Posted by Kanye west dickrider on Tuesday, 12/28/2021 @ 12:27pm |
I'm of the opinion Ye is too big not to go in but I suspect he's ruined being a FYI with his actions. Posted by mat r on Thursday, 04/7/2022 @ 22:18pm |
Love him or hate him, he's undeniably one of the biggest ad most important artists of the 21st century. He goes in for sure. Posted by Henry on Sunday, 05/29/2022 @ 02:53am |
This just keeps getting worse and worse like jesus christ. Like if he doesn't like make and amends and get on his meds i can't see him getting in maybe ever. People have to be beyond uncomfortable with the guy. Posted by Mat r on Wednesday, 10/12/2022 @ 21:52pm |
I suspect his recent mental-illness induced public meltdowns may ruin his chances as a first year (or really, any year) inductee as his controversies seem to (unfortunately) cloud the public perception over his work, although that really just has more to do with the culture of modern social media and refusal of nuance nowadays than it does about West (does his recent statements cloud the genius of 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'? Of 'Late Registration'? I don't think so personally, and I don't think it should ever.) Unfortunately there can be no nuance or line divisions between West the artist and West the boorish, mentally ill celebrity tabloid fodder. His fall from grace is as saddening as that of Elvis, Jackson, and Winehouse in my estimation. Posted by Albert Ayler also belongs in the hall on Monday, 11/14/2022 @ 23:15pm |
Hello Super Fans, Historians, Musicians from the Cowbell to the Stylophone & people who go with what's Trending at the Moment In R.S. or Your Favorite Radio, Pod or TV music show. Since the latest Ye Apocalypse started with his comments that I understand cold have been delivered with a little more style & grace by avoiding Stereotypes & pinpointing the actual Music, Film, Media & Pop Culture Trend Setters that in actuality were, are & will continue to be a threat to Ye Financially, Mentally, Emotionally & Physically. In front of the Worlds the Power's at Hand Ye felt the need to Lable with a Defcon 3, a word not heard since 1983 in Wargames with Matthew Broderick who happens to be a Jewish Entertainer by way of his Jewish Mother who also had a Public mishap when he murdered a Young Daughter & Mother Driving "Dangerously" but with Hollywood Execs like Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Harvey Fierstein, the Weinsteins & other Jewish Big Wigs means you only pay $175 for a dead family whom he lied & hurt further by Broderiks Refusal to meet & filming a Superbowl Commercial in the some type Car who murdered a family in. He was paid multi million dollars but never reached out. Why would he. If you're Jewish in Hollywood it's $87.50 in 1987 per Kill. & The CEO's not only cover but make you an award winning super star, who cheats on his wife. Bur it's ok. It's not like he's Black. Can we delete that comment? Cause it's incredibly stupid. Posted by Mat r on Thursday, 12/1/2022 @ 09:30am |
I cannot believe that one of the most acclaimed musicians of the 21st century turned out to be an awful human being. His legacy and career are forever ruined because he praises an infamous dictator and anti-semitic rants. We sort of apologized the Taylor Swift incident back in the day, but this is unforgivable. Can we all un-cancel the other celebrities who did stupid things for 15 minutes of fame and vanished into existence, yet they stay out of trouble, unlike Ye? This dude is done. DONE. Posted by DVale on Thursday, 12/1/2022 @ 16:00pm |
With his recent anti semitism rants he'll be lucky if any even plays his music at any radio station. His music is mediocre at best. I can think of a lot of female hip hop artist who deserve it more then him. Each rant he does makes himself sound that more foolish Posted by Havoc on Thursday, 12/8/2022 @ 11:55am |
Kanye is a retard Posted by ISM (Or Collin) on Friday, 01/13/2023 @ 12:18pm |
We will see if Kanye will be nominated and inducted in 2028. Posted by power on Friday, 06/30/2023 @ 07:07am |
I feel like Kanye would've been a lock for induction within his first few years of eligibility - his music has the critical success and industry respect, it has the commercial success and name recognition, he's definitely had a huge influence on hip hop - he checks all the boxes. But the simple fact is that they're not going to induct someone who has been openly antisemitic for the past two years, nor should they. Just associating with him would already be terrible optics, nevermind the fact that it would probably involve inviting him to the ceremony, and who knows what he might say or do then.
