Only a 37% chance for an r&b legend with a distinctive voice and smooth, loping grooves behind the songs "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Lean On Me", "Who Is He(And What Is He To You)?", "Grandma's Hands", "Kissing My Love", "Lovely Day" and "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh"?
Sure, he shone briefly: 1971-1974 (with the notable exception of "Just the Two of Us" in 1980), but just the amount that his work has been sampled over the years would indicate his significance, I would think.

Ok, I'm down with that. I love Bill Withers. He is all about soul.

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know.... that he'd be a better pick than Percy Sledge, for sure.

Not to mention Roberta Flack or Nina Simone who aren't even on this site's list (but "Sixx:AM" is?!... whatever)
"Lean on Me" is an epochal song, a timeless call to empathy and solidarity, just as relevant in 2008 as in 1972. He should be inducted for this one alone.

And by the way, he wrote his own songs. How many R&B artists can say that of themselves?

An incredible travesty! Biggest omission at this point.

Absolutely insane and outrageous that Bill Withers wasn't voted in when he was first eligible. That he's still not in in 2011 is inconceivable. Hall of Shame!

The man is inspirational not only for his music and lyrics, which are hummed, whistled and sung world-wide, but for his humanity and decency. Do the right thing!

Not one of my favorites. I agree that he's deserving, but not before The Marvelettes or Spinners.
