Alanis and Jay-Z are the only ones with a serious chance here. I like Dave Grohl but come on. Foo Fighters in the Hall of Fame?

Alanis Morissette, Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, and believe or not, Wilco. I honestly don't understand why anyone wouldn't consider Wilco an absolute *lock* at this point.

Let me add Garbage to the list of long shot inductees. It's a possiblity, but not strong one.

It's true SFA is not a household name over here, but they still sell fairly well, especially considering their lack of radio and television play. I might even get to see them at the end of the month if I'm not forced to choose between them or Ween.
Wilco is a critics' darling, and deservedly so. They're also just the right amount of "hip" for a fogey like Wenner to hop on board without looking grossly out of place.

Why has no one mentioned Sleater-Kinney?
No one's a lock this year, but...
Probables:
Jay-Z
Sleater-Kinney
Wilco
Possibles:
Foo Fighters
Cat Power (Critical darling)
Long shot:
Garbage

Wilco are an interesting band... Ever since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, they have been kicking giant holes in the hall of fame door. I think they've done enough now to get in.

The dare to be out there award: Ben Folds/Chem. Bros./Son Volt

Not the best year. Their's no definite locks.
Strongest chances:
Jay-Z (depends if they still honor rap)
Jurrasic 5 (see above)
Chemical Brothers (long shot)
Wilco (long shot)
Foo Fighters (slim chances since Dave Grohl will be in with Nirvana.)

"Foo Fighters (slim chances since Dave Grohl will be in with Nirvana.)"
I have to disagree. I think Foo Fighters are a practical shoe-in at this point. And so what Grohl will already have been inducted w/ Nirvana. Not only will the HoF honor Grohl again by inducting Foo Fighters, but I wouldn't be surprised if he got inducted a THIRD time. After all, there aren't a lot of bands in the 21st century that are important, innovative, AND mainstream. Which is why a rock icon like Grohl is becoming a rare breed, all the more reason to pay him respects.

A fairly weak year if you ask me, only a few artists really worthy of induction. That makes this a difficult class...and not in a good way (see 2019's prospects for a difficult class in a good way).
My votes:
Jay-Z (if anybody's a lock, it's him)
Foo Fighters
Garbage
Wilco
They're the only four I'd vote for this year. A few arists I wouldn't vote for probably will make it, though, so bearing this in mind...
The (likely) inductees:
Jay-Z
Foo Fighters
Wilco
Ben Folds Five
Chemical Brothers
In my book, it would be a travesty for Ben Folds Five or Chemical Bros. to get in at Garbage's expense...unfortunately, Jann Wenner seems to read from a different book than I.

Any reason you picked the year 2020 for this Roy?
Posted by Dude Man on Sunday, 10.4.09 @ 11:44am
I think Roy is going with my idea that we just put EVERYBODY in and then have a ceremony every year to kick people out...
Posted by Gitarzan on Sunday, 10.4.09 @ 12:13pm
Roy wants that "Encyclopedia with walls" kind of thing.... as long as it only includes 20th century artists.
Posted by Philip on Sunday, 10.4.09 @ 12:36pm
Most of the artists Roy listed I'm fairly certain that only about 10 people have heard of them

Since 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' made Rolling Stone's '100 Best Albums of the Decade' list at number three, are we all in agreement that Wilco are now definite locks?

No. We are not.
Posted by Ralph on Thursday, 12.10.09 @ 12:15pm
I would agree that for 2020, Foo Fighters and Jay-Z definitely edge out Wilco when it comes to possible "first year eligibility" inductions, but do you really believe they have absolutely no chance of being seriously considered in the future? What exactly do you base this on? They're one of the most highly established, respected, and critically acclaimed bands of the past 15 years. I fail to see how they wouldn't at least make a ballot appearance.
Posted by Antonio on Thursday, 12.10.09 @ 16:37pm
Certainly Wilco are contenders for Hall. They have a good case. However, when you look at acts that have better metrics than Wilco, yet aren't in, you have to say they have an uphill battle (at this point in time).
They need another Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or two to make them a lock, IMO.

Really??? Real, real, real good year??? I always thought that kind of praise was reserved for years where the best musician on the list wasn't a rapper...

JAY-Z
and Foo Fighters

Locks: Jay-Z (He's at least close to being one, and the closest one on here to being one)
Not definite, but a very good chance: Foo Fighters, Wilco
Possibly: Jewel (Her early popularity might unfortunately be enough), The Chemical Brothers (Being more popular would help), Incubus, Natalie Merchant, Garbage
Left-field picks, and no chance: Kamelot, Rammstein, Opeth (Though some people think there might be room to argue for the latter)
Posted by Sam on Wednesday, 08.25.10 @ 19:35pm
I should clarify my position on Jewel. I don't hate her; I actually enjoy a song or two, I just don't view her as worthy.
Posted by Sam on Friday, 12.17.10 @ 10:00am
who I think should get in
Jay Z, Foo Fighters, Wilco, Chemical Brothers.

The Chemical Brothers
Foo Fighters

I like some of the stuff by Carbon Leaf, but they don't have a shot.
Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Friday, 01.13.12 @ 14:49pm
I never would have pegged Garbage or Fiona Apple as potential future inductees, but I think their chances have increased. Fiona has been steadily making her way to the upper echelons of 90's singer-songwriters over the past fifteen+ years, and Shirley Manson is always in discussions of signficant 90's front-women which could improve the band's chances.
What does everyone else think? I don't believe they'd make it in on a first ballot, especially when Foo Fighters, Jay-Z and Eminem all become eligible those years, but I honestly believe they have a stronger case than they did just a few years ago.
