And the Rock Hall had been very closed off for years. It started off as private affairs. Like it made the news but it was never really on TV, I don't think, though virtually all of them were filmed. VH1 was, I think, the first channel to air the ceremonies until Fuse and HBO picked it up. Now it's on ABC. They also may wanna bring attention to potential inductees too.

Instead of airing the ceremony on HBO, it's now on ABC with it also streaming on Disney+. The inductees are now being announced on American Idol instead of SiriusXM or a short video by Greg Harris. This is without a doubt a direct result of of the John Sykes era considering his past as a co-founder of MTV and current tenure with iHeartMedia.

Like what they do for the Oscars. I guess more old people would be watching GMA rather than American Idol, but conceptually Idol makes sense because the focus on music.

So this wasn't planned initially, even with the Disney contract. They only moved it and agreed to air on American Idol between when nominations started and more then halfway through. As for why, you can judge yourself. Maybe they saw something in how results were going, or maybe they came to an agreement. Just that it was not originally planned, and it's a bit odd to me

For 2020, you have inductees that consisted of:

*A band with only one member left
*An industrial act that is Metal adjacent
*A New Wave/Alternative act that is more well known for music nerds and a niche group
*A Hip Hop act, though popular, might have the Hall find a hard time finding someone for a tribute performance
*A Rock band that anyone who aren't Boomers wouldn't listen

Basically, Whitney was the only populist act since she can get artists that popular with many people to do the tribute performance.

And for 2023, only George Michael, Missy Elliott, and Sheryl Crow are the only acts that are very populist while the inductees are well known to music nerds and/or certain niche groups (No, I'm not counting Willie Nelson because it seemed like people who aren't Country fans know him by name and doesn't listen to his songs).

I will never forget Troy Smith's tweet from last year about having info of the 2023 class before it was officially revealed. He was super happy with the diversity of artists and that the white RAWK guys will have a meltdown over the list of inductees lol.

Actually, Ballots were due back yesterday (the 15th), so the inductees will know by the end of the week if they made it before they get announced on American Idol by Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie next Sunday, April 21 on ABC.
