I say "yes"......fantastic albums with lots of nice creative turns, and their commercial success is now beyond "indie"

If Folk Rock becomes Massively popular next decade (2010-2020),which i believe it will, Then the Shins will be regarded as very influential and will be a sure shot for the Rock Hall. If Hip-Hop and Alternative remain the most popular genres next decade (unlikely), Then the shins will have a hard time getting in the hall.

Calzone -

You really think alternative is still big? Do you mind if I ask what you discern to be "alternative" in today's world? Are you talking about the basic commercial hard rock out there today, cause while someone like Nickelback can make like Pearl Jam doesn't necessarily make it alternative (if that's what you feel the word still means these days). I promise you no potshots will be taken... just interested in who you think fits that bill now.

I don't even know who the Shins are. I just came here to talk about how good Madagascar is.

Look, Mike, If you don't know who the shins are.. why don't you go to the Guns and Roses section and talk about the song there? Makes much more sense.
And Cheesecrop? Alternative.. Like Coldplay, Radiohead. Those two are like the biggest bands of this decade, and i believe they have an "Alternative" Sound. And also, most of the good bands of this decade have been alternative. We do have some good hard rock bands also though (Strokes, Hives, The White Stripes) because Garage rock revival= Hard Rock. To me anyway. But Alternative isn't nearly as popular as Hip Hop/Rap, But the quality of the rap and hip/hop songs coming out has been dropping rapidly. In One decade we've gone from Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" to "Crank That Soulja Boy" Which is just awful. Rap will die because people will finally realize how bad it's gotten, and i think they will turn to folk. Then bands like Blind Pilot and Fleet Foxes will be huge. That's my prediction.

Heard Fleet Foxes recently, and have to agree w/you wholeheartedly.

Saw them play at Bonnaroo. Great set, before a very enthusiastic crowd. Really like this band, want to see them again sometime.

'Wincing the Night Away' is a great album.

Security Question:

Which letter is Springsteen's band named after?
