They were the Godmothers of Outsider Music. Like Nirvana, the Shaggs were one of those bands that wants you thick they sucked but were actually good and talented. Frank Zappa was a huge fan of them and once said they were “better” than the Beatles (Yep, he actually said that since he essentially hated the Fab Four until their music grew him).

As much as I respect Frank Zappa, when you know the backstory of the Shaggs, it's very clear that no, they weren't good and talented. Pure parental projectionism, period. Had they lived in the '90s and '00s, they would've been seen as the "pageant babies" of music.

@Phillip: They Are Still Alive and were in the 1990s and 2000s but had broken up as a band they reunited in 1999 and 2017. Unfortunately, Helen died in 2006, However.
