I believe these guys are one of the most underrated bands out there, they are amazing and possibly the best , they brought a new sound to punk

Posted by Dexter Holland (but not really) on Sunday, 03.18.07 @ 17:28pm

Dexter Holland, I agree about your band being one of the most underrated bands and that they should be part of the Hall of Fame, but there are some questions I want to ask you:

1. Is it true that The Offspring's new album is due out soon? I read about your band's article on Wikipedia and it says so that it's due for release as early as next year. I'm a huge fan of The Offspring and will definitely buy your new album when it's out.

2. Is it true that your guitarist Noodles was once stabbed at a concert? One time I read about one of your biographies or something that says he was stabbed during an anti-nuclear benefit in Hollywood in 1989.

3. Is it true that your band also left Epitaph Records because of some disagreement with Brett Gurewitz (from Bad Religion)? It says so on the label's Wikipedia page as well and I was wondering if this actually happened, because The Offspring and Bad Religion are two of my favorite bands of all time.

his name even says Dexter Holland (but not really)

There early stuff is great. But they don't deserve to go. They went from being a serious band with a sense of humor to a mindless pop band with a bunch of gimmicky songs (Why Don't You Get a Job). Not a chance. I love Ignition, Smash, and Ixnay though

Posted by owen on Monday, 12.10.07 @ 11:17am

Smash is the most successful independent album of all time, so yeah i think they should be able to get in to the rock and roll hall of fame.

yay offspring

Posted by dan on Thursday, 03.13.08 @ 18:42pm

Yes, I think they do deserve to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have been a very popular band since Smash came out.

Posted by Juan on Thursday, 04.3.08 @ 17:11pm

Perhaps, but there are dozens of other punk acts from the time period 1977-1991 that should get in first.

Posted by SST on Friday, 05.23.08 @ 22:34pm

Youre right they are so underrated. Most people hear the goody songs on the radio and right them off. Even on their later so called "weaker" albums they have come up with some absolute classic songs like "Million Miles Away" and "The Kids Aren't Alrite"

Posted by jon roberts on Tuesday, 07.22.08 @ 09:37am

they def will. wanna know why? because they went 6X PLATINUM on an indie label. nobodys beat that yet and nobody ever will.

Posted by Mike on Tuesday, 08.12.08 @ 01:03am

Another album, another #1 (radio) hit. These guys are just as influencial as bands like Weezer and Greenday (who both will likely be inducted). But they're also extremely kickass. HIT EM RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYE, HIT EM RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYE!

I think the Offspring should burn in hell. They have clearly pussy-ed out on some of their songs. I mean, listen to the latest album- the second half is full of radio friendly jingles. I wish they would write simpler, guitar based songs- I get sick of samples and jokeyness. And the sick thing is I have loved them ever since 1997. Unconditional love is painful when you love a band that keeps letting you down. mAybe I need to move on.... all the best!

The Offspring are a very underrated band. They are my favorite band, and I hope they are Roll Hall of Fame because they deserve it.

They can get was Green Day who originally paved the way for the punk rock revial (and perhaps also Bad Relgion due to being on their label). As a result, don't expect The Offspring to make in on their first year...only after GD is inducted will they have a shot (and if Bad Religion does get inducted, then it's almost likely The Offspring will follow)

Posted by maplejet on Monday, 01.26.09 @ 10:56am

The Offspring is the best and they deserve to be induced, due to the popularity and success of their Smash record.

Posted by Gary on Saturday, 02.21.09 @ 21:15pm

Absolutely, yes. Best-selling independent label album of all time, over 50 million records sold, 11 of 21 awards won, and...let's just say it pretty easy - the best selling punk rock band of all time.

The Offspring is okay, shouldn't get in on the first ballot. They have made a couple great albums, and a few mediocre albums. Smash is still one of the best albums of the 90's.

Sono i MIgliori PUNTO!

OFFSPRING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by jsmak84 on Thursday, 06.10.10 @ 08:13am

of course The Offspring deserve it!!

they are one band that, no matter what ppl think punk is or is not, simply cross everyone's mind when it comes to mention big bands that had an impact on us! we all remember smash, we all remember americana, some love it, some don't, but all in all, they touched us, and they keep doing it, which is one of the most important things nowadays, to keep up and together!

so yeah, they are quite a remarkable band!!

Posted by Rutegard on Friday, 06.11.10 @ 14:35pm

After listening to The Offspring for going on two decades now, one can really hear how their sound has influenced a lot of the "punk/rock" style that's developed over the last 5-10 years. As well, they've stayed completely true to their own style, while also being one of the few bands to continue writing lyrics that hold true to life. One of the few bands that most people can probably relate to 90% of the songs they've written, no matter what their walk of life.

Posted by imperialreign on Friday, 06.11.10 @ 20:38pm

People who think The Offspring suck and don't deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are idiots. The Offspring always have and always will be one of the greatest rock bands ever, and yes they do deserve to be part of this just because they've been famous since Smash came out in '94.

Posted by Tony on Tuesday, 06.15.10 @ 11:09am

Agreed, Tony. The Offspring rules and they definitely should enter the Hall of Fame.

Posted by Mike on Tuesday, 06.15.10 @ 21:12pm

I'd actually be happy if the Offspring get inducted.

Posted by Brett on Tuesday, 09.28.10 @ 15:48pm

Often overlooked, but almost as important as Green Day when it came to the pop punk revivial. They also get points for, along with Blink 182 (who are a toss up IMO) perpetuating pop punk and keeping it in the mainstream when Green Day was in their pre-American Idiot commercial slump. AMG also has quite a few bands cited as an influences, like Paramore, AFI, Blink 182 and Sum 41. (Linkin Park is also cited, but thats kinda sketchy) They'll probably never be considered, but at least we can get them into our hall at some point.

Posted by Jim on Friday, 01.21.11 @ 20:07pm

Dexter Holland is credited with bringing punk back decades after its prime. How is that not a contribution to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll?

The Offspring for the win!

Posted by Austin on Saturday, 03.26.11 @ 21:51pm

To the A$$clown who said that Green Day paved the way is totally laughable, Green Day is $hit, If Green Day didn't sign to a major label, Dookie would not be nearly as successful. The Offspring have been around before Green Day, Green Day had some good songs, don't get me wrong. But The Offspring had more success with smash than green day ever had with smash than green days Kerplunk. Smash was on a Indie Label, if it wasnt for Smash, Epitaph and Nitro Records probably wouldnt be around today. Most Offspring songs rock alot more than Green Day songs that are pop style. Sure some songs on newer albums got softer, but they still have their killer sound unlike Green Day who keep changing it to get the younger kids and girls into while Offspring has all ages. If anything The Offspring has proved to be the better band at heart than Green Day. And most Bands will agree when I say that if it wasn't for Nirvana, most bands like Offspring and Green Day wouldnt be around today, so if anything, it was Nirvana that paved the way for the punk revival, and that is how Smash which has alot of Punk and Grunge and Rock in it got fans into Ignition which is just as good as smash and rocks just as hard are the True influences of the Punk Revival of the 90's that changed the face of the New wave music and alone should earn The Offspring a spot in the R&R Hall of Fame. So get your facts strait. Green Day is more of a Ramones Rip off, pozer band that play bubble gum pop to become famous.

How could you leave essentials without AMERICANA!? They totally covered 90's. If I remember correctly it is 5x platinum in the USA. Smash 6x. It's absolutely essential. Pretty Fly, The kids aren't alright and Why don't you get a job. It's Nirvana who paved the way and then Green day and The offspring became 1-2 punch in 1994. The offspring did it again with Americana and Green day with American idiot later.

Five years of waiting. My god, i was lost in the paraller. I have made my choices and I have lived by them. Like Half-Truism said, "and if we donīt make it alive, itīs a hell of a good day to die". And I did and I was. Never I was pushed aside as much as I was. But thank god Trust in you came along. I found my soulmate, my precious, my home and my wife. Indeed, the forest life might scare a few people, but we managed to survive. We went far, like Youīre gonna go far, kid. My mother did not told me this when I was a young boy but to my child, I will. After the invasion of maggots we had to make a choice. To be or be beaten. We chose Hammerhead. Like a hammer on our muscles we hammered down some ground rules for the people and only for the people. The destruction was long before forgotten and made itīs debut. A lot like me, it was centered on the world crisis. I was Him and Him was I. We argued all the time, everywhere and nothing was captured. Unfortunately for the camera. With the picture in my hand I knew it would takes me nowhere. But where i asked. Nobody told me, so i was rejected for the application. I was mad and pissed of to the be continued

...It reminded me of my childhood and my neighbour, Kristy. Are you doing Ok, I asked her all the time becouse she was a sad girl. I donīt think I saw her smiling, not even once. But she was my friend and I cared for her. At the age of 10, Kristy moved with her family to another town. After that, my life became boring. I realised that Kristy was my only friend. This town, this Nothingtown was filled with egos that i just did not liked. All the pretty boys and girls that hanged around each others. I was a be continued......Stuff is messed up, i wrote on the local newspaper. I wanted to become a journalist and go around the world. To be famous, rich and to find Kristy, my lovely Kristy. The newspaper send me an answer to home. It said, "thanks for writeing us about the stuff is messed, sadly it will not be published. It had too many scrooge loose, like in youīr head. Thanks anyway...LOSER". I wish I could fix you and I wish you could fix me. I was crying. What was wrong with. Why all my dreams were crashed. Why, Oh be continued

...I went home and straight to my fathers beer bottle. Letīs hear for hard rock bottom, i said. It was disgusting but i had to take another one. I felt my inside wanting to come out. I wanted to feel pain. I took another sip and then it exploded. I was laying on the kitchen floor. Blood came through my mouth. I was looking the broken bottle next to me. My life, Rise and Fall, Kristy...Oh Kristy, why did you had to go. We could have been something together. We could have made it. Itīs all your fault. This is all your fault, Kristy. You made me. Becouse of you I am like this. But I still love you. Next day the newspaper made a story about a tragedy in the town. I guess I finally made it. I was the story for that day...The Offspring - Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace 10/10...RoCCCk...CaRRRamba..and thatīs why they should be in for this RR hall of Fame

These dudes started out as a couple of underdogs that later on started a whole new role in punk rock. Here are a few examples of their awsomeness...
-They are very underrated despite their talent and have inspired other bands that are a bit more famous like Green Day,Blink-182,A.F.I,Sum41,etc.
-Smash set the record for best selling album on an independant label.
-Smash itself is "six times multi-platinum"
-Been nominated for 21 awards over the years and wond half of them.
I could list more reasons but there are so much of them.Bottom line is They DO deserve to get into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

ok here is the thing somme people who dont want offspring in should know 1-not all there song are only humour like why dont u get a job or watever
2-most of there songs wether new or old have great meaning and actually sound good like:the kids arent alright, kristy are you doing okay(i mean comme on wich lead singer is bold enough to write a whole song just for one girl),hammerhead, your gonna go far kid, self esteem and thats the tip of the iceberg there is so much more whats good about that band they are not so serious they keep many songs mature and nice and at the same time have a bit of funny songs from time to times

Influence: THe Offspring are a definite influence on the modern day punk//pop punk scene. 20%
Innovation: Green Day and others came before. 0%
Critical Respect: They were more highly regarded than bands like blink 182 but not as much as green day. 10%
Commercial Sucess: They have sold 35 million records, this marks them as one of the most sucessful punk acts ever. 20%

50%, they deserve discussion

Zero innovation, phantom influence (if you're just imitating something that already happened, how influential are you really), and a lot of record sales. Cool, let them wait behind New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys and Blink 182. They all have the same credentials.

Darin, I usually find you so knowledgable, but isn't you're statement in parentheses assuming way too much?. You could argue that:

Van Halen = Zeppelin Imitators

Aerosmith = Imitiation of the Stones

GNR = Imitation of Aerosmith

Coldplay = Pale imitation of Radiohead

Billy Joel = Imitation of Elton John

Green Day = Imitation of the Buzzcocks

Heart = Imitation of Zeppelin with Female Vocals

Oasis = Imitation of the Beatles (with straight up plagarism accusations)

I don't necessarily think that being following an established trend prevents you from being influential at all. Especially since rock and roll is littered with them.

As far as the Offspring are considered, I don't think they should get in first-ballot, but they have a good case and I'd like to see them in someday.

Posted by Jim on Wednesday, 11.2.11 @ 23:59pm

Jim - I think your examples are valid in an overall sense, but I think it really varies from genre to genre. Some genres evolve, some don't. To my ears and experience, punk is a genre that stagnated and became creatively irrelevant after only a few years. I really don't think that the punk bands who debuted in the mid-80s onward offered anything new or important.

I would say the same thing about Green Day that I said about The Offspring and Blink-182 if it weren't for their latter years where they began to expand beyond the immitation punk.

So, you could take the point that I made and apply it across the board, fair enough, but I just think that punk is a genre that long ago became too plastic and artistically stale to have any credibility or importance over the past two and a half decades. I genuinely don't see any argument in the Offspring's favor beyond record sales.

Maybe I'm just being an old purist, but it's one of a couple genres that I feel that strongly about (and don't even get me started on what some people tried to pass off as industrial in the song project genre vote. LOL.).

I think you're selling the whole pop-punk revival of the mid-90s a bit short Darin. I can understand the gripes with it, but let me put it this way:

Its 1994 and some kid hears Come Out and Play and Longview on the radio. Liking what he hears, he buys Smash and Dookie. From there he works backwards and gets into "real punk" so to speak.

If that example occurs, (and I'm sure it has) does that not count as perpetuation of rock and roll? The music of Green Day and The Offspring acts as a good stepping stone for people when it comes to so called "real punk".

When it comes to The Offspring, their role as no. 2 in the pop punk revival is a big part of their case. Green Day are the poster boy band, but The Offspring were the consistent hitmakers who have carved out a very impressive resume. And I don't necessarily buy that they don't have any influence either, alot of the pop punk bands to come out from the late 90s - mid 2000s take just as much from the laid-back,slightly humorous sound of their pop punk as Green Day. And yeah, they may have not made an American Idiot, but they made Americana, which with the exception of Pretty Fly for a White Guy, saw them expand their horizons.

Simply put, they don't deserve to get in over all the current snubs, but they'd be a good way to flesh out the 90s for me.

the offspring deserves it and they should be in one day

Posted by offspringfan on Monday, 02.6.12 @ 16:32pm

i listen to The Ofspring since my 5 years old , today i have 18.

The most part of my life is was always accompanied by them.

I love that guys so much :)

Just got into this band in last few months. 8 or 9 great songs. Very impressive. Hope to see them in concert someday.

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 02.7.12 @ 15:24pm

My favorite Offspring songs are the ones that never get played on the radio. Splinter had some solid tracks. The noose and Race against myself. I would be OK never hearing Hit that again but that's the radio stations fault for only ever playing the slapstick songs. They are way overdue for an album. Chop! Chop! Lol! ;)

The Offspring totally deserve it, waaaaaaay more than Greenday

50 million albums

Sticking to punk sounds

Being inspirational too

Voted yes.

After Green Day, but before blink-182 (the latter of which is the most recent punk band with ANY chance).

Should have had "Gone Away" listed as an "Essential Song".

Posted by Guitar1301 on Friday, 04.6.12 @ 22:14pm

They absolutely deserve it. One of the biggest reasons they have been my favorite band for nearly a decade is because I haven't heard one song they did that I didn't like. I know that's not the case with everyone, but to each their own, and I think they should get it.

Posted by helloimtyler on Thursday, 05.31.12 @ 04:14am

I agree with many. The Offspring definitely deserves this, not because I love this band but because of their cult status.

Posted by Brad on Thursday, 10.4.12 @ 18:45pm

IGNITION - that's all I gotta say. That album alone should get them in.

"Should have had "Gone Away" listed as an "Essential Song"."

The songs listed as "Essential Songs" have been voted into the Song Project on the messageboards on this site. Same deal with the "Essential Albums" and the Album Project messageboard.

Highest selling independent label album of all-time with over 14 million copies sold of their 1994 album Smash. If that alone isn't worthy of being inducted, I don't know what is.

Posted by Brett on Tuesday, 12.17.13 @ 23:59pm

Generic and repetitive, nope.

Posted by grtew on Saturday, 06.7.14 @ 17:47pm

I don't think so. They are popular and Smash was good, but let's wait at leat 10 years to relise their real impact.

Posted by BulmaPunkRocker on Sunday, 07.6.14 @ 02:13am

No doubt in my mind that they deserve it. Best punk rock band with old Green Day and they inspired Blink-182.

Posted by Philippe on Tuesday, 01.27.15 @ 16:59pm

"Innovation: Green Day and others came before. 0%"

This is false. Green Day did not come before The Offspring.

Why aren't the in they are like the best ban I've ever heard.

Posted by DjPon-3 on Friday, 05.22.15 @ 15:02pm

if green day is in the hall then so should the offspring in all honesty. They are one of the best independent bands of all time.

Posted by samsan_07 on Monday, 11.16.15 @ 03:32am

Why does everyone think green day came first?? Offspring came first formed 2 years before (1984) and released first album one year before (1989). Both of them became famous in 1994 but offspring did it without a major label.

They are also one of the most original punk bands out there with a very unique signature sound, only some songs by sum41, rise against and autopilot off really come close to it while every punk band since blink sounds like green day

To me they should be in first ballot. There aren't many bands out there that I have at least 6 very good albums (ignition, smash, ixnay, Americana, conspiracy and rise and fall) with the other 3 being weaker but still having several good songs

Posted by digppa on Tuesday, 03.22.16 @ 17:26pm

Thinking about adding The Offspring to my 2017-2018 nominations list. Gone Away is such a powerful song and they just have a signature sound. Remember I was 19 I think when The Offspring and Come Out And Play exploded onto the scene. Dexter Holland has a powerful voice. I wonder if he could break a pane of glass or knock down a cardboard box house singing. Green Day & The Offspring were on a similar track but American Idiot vaulted Green Day ahead. I believe The Offspring will be nominated and inducted in the next 5-10 years. KING

Well, I finally saw these guys at a rainy Rock on the Range in Columbus, OH. Have to thank the gods that they got their set off as alot of acts didn't that weekend (Korn followed them & only got to play 1/2 hour).

They didn't play all their hits, cause they only had an hour. Not much chitchat as they tore thru a good number of them. Dexter sounded great. To me the only band that weekend that could have followed an awesome Papa Roach set.

Why aren't they in The Hall? They sure need to be.
