Quintessentially a girl-rock group, sure give them a shot. Susanna Hoff is one hot babe!

Only if Michael Steele is included. Without her, the Bangles are pretty lame and flat.

Their songs remain relevant today as they were when released. A definite HOF quality.

Susie Hoffs one hot rocker babe and the Peterson sisters. Eternal Flame and Hazy Shade of Winter cover were other hits. Good singers played own instruments. Girl band! Need more girl bands!

Their first EP and their first LP " All Over The Place" solidify the Bangles as A Quality Induction . Aesthetically , their commercial well known hits are not the essential Bangles.
Along with Micheal Steel, Susanna and the Peterson sisters have given us absolute classics like " Hero Takes A Fall" , "Live" , "New World", "Getting Out Of Hand" and "James" . L.A. Women Rock!

The Bangles is that group that nobody hates, but they don't see them in the same light as say the Go Go's. And maybe they don't get enough credit for their short run in the 80's. They only released 3 albums, but their billboard success blew groups like the Go Go's out of the water. They have two #1's, two #2's, a #5, and a #11 hit. I don't think a lot of people even realize that. The albums are great and fun. They all play and the four part harmonies are unmatched. So maybe they were underrated? It's hard to say. But if you need to be cheered up, go listen to some Bangles!

I had watched the “Behind The Music” episode featuring The Bangles on YouTube yesterday morning. As far as the female bands of the 1980’s are concerned, I much prefer The Bangles over the Go-gos and Bananarama.

I think the Bangles should get in really dig Walk Like an Egyptian and Manic Monday,,, Having said that The Go Go's are very innovated good old rock fun punk "we got the beat" a tribute to the surf {Vacation LP} "Beatnik Beach" ' kinda a Wipe Out among other sounds They cover a lot of sounds ... They are all about fun Music Bananarama Cruel Summer, Venus and I Heard A Rumour are ok If I was going Bananarama direction, I would prefer the group "Shades of Lace" "Since You Came over Me" or Come and Get It....

I think The Go Gos have a chance. The Bangles & Bananarama have no chance, IMO.

The Bangles are the quintessential example of how the record companies destroy great bands with their avaricious greed. The women in the band did have some important issues between themselves. Their management used these conflicts to drive wedges between the band members to facilitate removing Hoffs from her mates. The women were not equipped to handle these situations. Too bad for all concerned, most especially their fans, because at their best, the Bangles were superb!

Posted by Joe Meglen on Tuesday, 02/12/2019 @ 16:16pm

Agreed. The Bangles were definitely exploited and used for the benefit of those who controlled their success and direction. Sure, they achieved major publicity with a #2 hit and a #1 hit, but they were typecast into the 80's meat grinder of sex and schlock, despite their overlooked talents. They probably could have been much more, as they were very talented. Micki Steele wrote a lot of songs, was an original member of The Runaways, before Jackie Fox, and is a well respected bassist.
More recently, The Bangles are featured on a new album released on Record Store Day, November 2018, called 3 X 4, on purple vinyl, and including the Dream Syndicate, the Three O'clock, and the Rain Parade. All these bands were associated together in the early 80's, in the Paisley Underground, and now put together a record where they cover one of each of the other bands songs. This will be released in LP, CD, and digital format on Feb. 22, 2019, next week, and I plan to check it out. It was reviewed in the recent Uncut rock magazine. Should be a good one.

The upcoming induction of The Zombies by Susanna Hoffs may lead to a nomination of The Bangles in the not too distant future. Of course, I would not be surprised if The Bangles and Duran Duran were inducted next year, much like Heart and Rush had been inducted in 2013.

On The Bangles: I think The Bangles are an interesting call. Very attractive 80's group and excellent Eagles and The Association type harmonies and vocals. They had some memorable hits with Hazy Shade Of Winter, Manic Monday, Walk Like An Egyptian, etc. I liked In Your Room too. They have a light discography because of the break up and then they regrouped years later. That was great when they covered and sang September Gurls. I wished they had brought in another female guitarist to give their songs extra power. My belief The Bangles will be inducted someday. There weren't many female groups in their class at that time and they had a good amount of hit songs. Suzanna Hoffs is an 80's icon and she's well-liked by fellow musicians and music fans. Her cool Zombies induction probably scores a few more points in the Committees eyes. Micki is also a respected musician. Walk Like An Egyptian would be an excellent final jam because they have different singers in parts of the song. Different inductees could help sing the parts. KING 👑

Of course, I would not be surprised if The Bangles and Duran Duran were inducted next year, much like Heart and Rush had been inducted in 2013. By the way, I had listened to their immortal song, ‘Eternal Flame’ this morning on Sirius X-M , while on the way to work.

ENIG.
I like the Bangles sound and watched The Bangles Behind The Music years ago. They were on a Hall Of Fame path when the group splintered apart in 1989 or 1990 time frame. They were at the height of their popularity and left several years of music on the table. In situations like this, there is plenty of blame to go around. Susanna should have resisted going solo instead doing solo albums periodically while remaining with The Bangles. Also, I think it also hurt The Bangles that there weren't many successful female rock groups around. They could have bounced and asked questions how to deal with the fame, money, and things. There's also some blame to the recording label and associates who singled out Hoffs in the group. She was extremely beautiful and probably smart marketing but that led to jealousy and tension within the band. Vocally, they the Bangles outstanding like Eagles and The Association. Outstanding harmony and all the members could sing. I was disappointed Susanna's solo career didn t light up the charts. My FAV Bangles songs would probably be: 1. Manic Monday 2. Hazy Shade Of Winter 3. In My Room. In my estimation, The Bangles will receive a nomination by 2025 since they are 1 of the most successful woman rock bands and are still recording I think nearly 20 years after the breakup. One interesting thing: There seems a lack of communication as the Bangles deterioration finally ended in the break-up. I found that strange as women are usually seen as better communicators than men and more likely to talk about how they are feeling and things. In this case, The Bangles listening to the documentary held some emotions inside and things until The Bangles finally decided to breakup. KING

I agree—The Bangles should be in the HOF. They ARE the female Beatles—their music has the same effect on me as did the "Fab 4!" Their music is optimistic, fun and many times meaningful—what better role models could there be for the difficult times we are living in?

About the Bangles? Susanna Hoffs is attractive and has one of the better voices, but the Bangles didn't have much for good songs in my opinion. I don't see them as Hall of Fame material.

Posted by Flyer on Tuesday, 07/28/2020 @ 10:04am

I do believe its time for the Bangles. They came to the fore in an age where image was overtaking substance. Unlike Bananarama, Pat Benatar, Teri Nunn, Madonna, Taylor Dayne, Janet Jackson, Expose, Siouxie Sioux, Whitney Houston or a ton of other female artists who emerged around the same time, the Bangles were truly a BAND - the trifecta of everyone playing, singing and songwriting. They were a major act in the Paisley Underground of the early 1980s, holding their own with the Dream Syndicate, the Long Ryders and the Three O'Clock. Songs like Getting Out of Hand, Real World and Hero Takes a Fall becoming staples on QROQ and LA underground. Later, after hitting the big time a casual listener might be distracted by the novelty of Walk Like an Egyptian, but if hits were an indicator of what the Bangles could do, then Hazy Shade of Winter is the signpost to the bigger picture. Songs like Want You, Restless, He's Got a Secret, Angels Don't Fall in Love, Watching the Sky, Bell Jar and Between the Two is evidence that these four women could definitely play. Live they are amazing, no backing tracks, no dance routines, no big production; just honest performing. As for depth, those who know Dover Beach, More Than Meets the Eye, Following, Glitter Years, I Will Take Care of You and Song For a Good Son are proof that the Bangles are more than just pretty faces. Speaking of which, this group never banked on their looks or their sexuality. They earned what they achieved with talent, tenacity and persistence. They started humbly. They topped the charts. They successfully reunited for the music. They continue to this day. Please induct Vicki Peterson, Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Michael Steele and Annette Zilinskas.

Honestly, I don't see The Bangles inducted until the 2030's. They broke up the band near or at the top of their game. Will hurt them nomination time. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, KISS, Scorpions etc have been going strong 40+ years. The Bangles in their favor were 1 of the few all-female 80's groups and had some great chart and commercial success. Some KING FAVS include: Hazy Shade Of Winter, In Your Room, Manic Monday, Walk Like An Egyptian, etc. I think if The Bangles had trudged on into the early 90's and made 2 or 3 albums...They would be nominated at least once. Music was changing to grunge and some of the pop singers. It would have been interesting what The 90's Bangles would have sounded like. I think The Bangles regrouped nearly 20 years now. Should help them. I like The Bangles sound although I wish they had louder guitars. All the women are important to the groups success and they all sing. Like Eagles and The Association. I've always been surprised Susanna Hoffa solo career wasn't as successful. She had plenty of talent, looks, and star quality. I think they will be Inducted RRHOF someday. KING

KING,

Unfortunately, The Bangles had experienced the same kind of situations that many female groups have experienced. Yes, there had been many petty jealousies which had developed between their ranks. But after most of them had experienced motherhood, they had developed much stronger bonds. Unlike the Go-Gos whose output had been based on the three songwriters in the group: Charlotte Caffey, Jane Wiedlin and Kathy Valentine and unlike the drug abuse problems that had nearly destroyed the Go-Gos, each of the members of The Bangles had written their own songs. However, with the possible exception of 'Eternal Flame,' most of their hits had been cover songs by other artists and songs written exclusively for them by other artists, in the case of 'Manic Monday' by Prince and 'Walk Like An Egyptian' by Liam Sternberg. Unfortunately, 'Walk Like An Egyptian' had started to create tensions within the band, since co-founding member Debbie Peterson had not sung on the single. This unfortunate situation had started the rift which would eventually engulf them. After a decade of separation, however the bonds which had they had formed together years before, seemed to start forming again. Still, I would not be surprised to see both The Bangles and the Go-Gos on the nomination ballot later this year, since the Rock Hall likes to pit various artists against each other.

Well, what do you think?

Posted by Enigmaticus on Friday, 08/14/2020 @ 16:01pm

Just listen to all the hits. Not to mention just look at the billboard records. They only did like 4 albums, but all the songs were great. They had two number one hits (Eternal Flame, Walk Like an Egyptian) Two number two hits (Manic Monday, Hazy shade of Winter) a number five hit on the charts with In your room, and a #11 hit with Walking down your street. They also had other top 100 hits like, If she knew what she wants, Be with you, and nobody knew who the heck they were when they released their first album. That's how Prince found out about them. Go to youtube. Prince played multiple concerts with them. They also did backup for Tom Petty and others. It's insanity with over 35 million albums sold and all those hits, that they haven't been inducted. Most people would say, what the heck? Just go listen to The Bangles again and you will see what I'm talking about.

The Bangles and The Go-Go's don't have the depth of discographies maybe other possible nominees would have. I think that could hurt nomination time. They probably have the advantage that the Committee is looking to add more women music artists in the Hall. The Bangles and The Go-Go's would be at the Top of the women groups. I think in the concert performances and shows that I have witnessed...The Go-Go's are tighter musically and more dynamic. I'm impressed by their musicianship. Belinda is still in good voice and Jane's usually happy and hitting all the right notes. I think The Bangles best arguments for HOF might be they had memorable songs and plenty of commercial success. Manic Monday is a Classic Song. No doubt about it. Walk Like An Egyptian was a popular and massive hit. Hazy Shade Of Winter probably my FAV The Bangles song. It rocks and is fast-paced. Eternal Flame is a ballad that people remember. It was a FAV of many of the fans. It's difficult to determine when the Committee would nominate The Bangles. I would vote for them on the ballot. KING

The Bangles were/are not a "great girl-all woman" band - they are simply a great rock and roll band independent of any gender. Those four women are first amazing musicians, song writers and performers, and the "happen to me" women - thee Bangles are not "...another Go-Gos, Runaways, etc...". The Bangles are a cutting, soul stirring rock and roll band that also has the diverse talent to write any kind of songs - from their rib hitting rockers like Angles Don't Fall in Love, Return Post, etc... to softer rock pop like Manic Monday, Eternal Flame, etc... The ability as incredibly creative talented song writers to write screaming rock and roll songs (their core), and fun pop songs is a positive tribute to their off the chart talent in that at least for me, I want "my bands" to write what they feel at the time, as they are people like the rest of us - sometimes we have feelings of rocking out with the dirtiest amp distortion there is, and sometimes in life we feel lighter and whimsical and write a fun poppier song. But, make no bias that the Bangles are at their core the "face melting" rockers, hence rock and roll hall of fame. And then put on top of that talent the vocals and harmonies that have not really been done by others to the kind of feeling those vocals elicit.... That's a band that cannot be put in a small box (no "Steel Dragon", please !). I think the maybe at that time in the 80's the record execs maybe did not know what to do with them because they played "anything" and 'wrote what we felt at the time...", and the idiot suits probably tried to give then a "girl band image" and such. I hate image - let your music flow where ever it takes you like the Bangles did and still do. And, yes - Michael Steele comes in with the band !! (OBTW - their 1986 Pittsburgh show at the Syria Mosque kind of did "change my musical life" as was going to quit drums and quit getting in a band, and they rocked out so crazily, immediately got home, got back on drums and started looking for local bands and start getting music back into life - Thank you Bangles Vikki Susanna, Debbie and Mikki - forever in your debt !)

Mark Shalonis,

Thank you for sharing your opinion about The Bangles with us. Hopefully, The Go-Gos will be inducted later this year and they will endorse the inductions of The Bangles. In the meantime, perhaps we need a documentary about the importance of The Bangles, in order to get them nominated?

Well, what do you think?

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 02/20/2021 @ 11:25am

Did find a version of Behind the Music documentary that I did not know about until now.... A "guess" is that most rock music listeners just don't know their rock and roll history as the real iceberg beneath the tip of the soft pop hits most folks only know about (which, again - are great songs - that is one of the many drivers for the Bangles being in the R&R hall of fame due to their musicianship creativity to write and perform such a wide range of music, that is what real life is about - many feelings and moods.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdRrLFveNVM

Short summary history article - got to be more out there to get people reading and understanding where these women....musicians...really came from and went through, and add on the biases towards "girl" rockers along the way.
https://h2g2.com/edited_entry/A2430145

An updated documentary, some interviews, something....is in order - just don't know how to even start thinking about something like that. If more folks and the R&R Hall of Fame folks "really knew" the history of these musicians from the garage band practice and the up hill battle they had, which if they were all men, probably would have gotten noticed a lot sooner along the way.

I'm not convinced that Bangles belong in the HOF. They made some good records in 80s and I loved their harmonies. But they didn't really break new ground or create lasting impact. Go-Go's, on the other hand, are a lock to get inducted in 2021. They were the first all-girl band to write and record number 1 records which still sound great today.

With The Go-Go's (Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Jane Wiedlin, Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock) safely inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, we need to get The Bangles (Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele) inducted as well. Love The Go-Go's and The Bangles!

The Go-Go's were very deservedly inducted in to the RRHOF last week.

I like The Bangles, but they didn't write most of their hits. That's what sets The Go-Go's apart.

For me, Bananarama does not even fall into the same category. They do not even play instruments. They are not a band, they are a vocal group.

These girls could really rock! They still have a worldwide fan base which also includes many inductees already in the hall. They all 4 superbly played their instruments, wrote songs, sang lead and had beautiful beach boy's like four part harmonies! The Bangles most definitely should be in the RRHOF!

The Bangles appear ready for a nomination in 2022-2023 cycle or 2023-2024. The Induction of many popular 1980's music artists this cycle...Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Judas Priest & Lionel Richie has opened it up for 1980's popular groups. Go-Go's have already earned Induction and The Bangles should be close behind. Walk Like An Egyptian or Hazy Shade Of Winter would be an excellent close to the ceremony.

The Bangles area a unique band that combined 60s rock with 80s rock in a garage band package. They wrote true rock 'n roll songs that modernized and advanced rock 'n roll. Listen to their '86 concert in Pittsburg. The garage band commitment to their songs is obvious and live in your face! Some of their stuff even gets quite heavy (listen to "He's Got A Secret"). Watch their early, American late night TV, live rendition (taped for later broadcast) of "Hero Takes A Fall" which shows their true ability to rock out with the best of them. These four musicians gelled together so well while playing their instruments with a jangled guitar sound that was anchored with a metronome like steady beat that made even the most stoic tap their feet. Solos were melodic and rhythms were solid and catchy. Every member of the Bangles took the lead vocal on various songs with beautiful, full and mastered voices. And above all, three words; FOUR PART HARMONIES! No one, and I mean absolutely no one could write, let alone sing their unique harmonies for live performances. Their vocals were unparalleled for a live performance. The Bangles are a true rock band and should be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!

I like the Bangles, but they just don't have the "it" factor to be known as icons. Their songs are good but not influential. You hear their hits and they sound dated and set in a certain time period. They do not make you want to dig further into their catalog. Their live shows are notm pp dynamic and not much chemistry. I hope they get inducted. I really do but to use their own quote they do seem like the poor man's Go-Gos.

Lots of bands broke up after a few years! There is no criteria for the Hall of Fame. Fans together only have 1 vote! Does Iggy Pop have any hits ? It's all about the T.V. Rights and how much they pay yearly! That's 80% of their income You think people fly to Cleveland for anything? Woman are second class citizens even though they're 30% of the touring ticket sales. Hall is totally political to sell catilog music

I don't love reading comments putting down other female artists (as if that somehow helps to promote the one you like). The Bangles' first EP and LP were smashingly good -- artistic triumphs that simply did not chart well. Their second and third albums ate the charts up with two #1s, two #2s, and an additional four top-30 hits. Their harmonies were unequaled and their brand of garage rock meets '60s psychedelia was of their own making. Tom Petty once asked them to step in and sing backup for one of his songs and before he'd turned around to give any direction, he heard them jump in, having already worked out a full four-part harmony that blew him away. Tho' the Bangles were clearly inspired by the Go Gos' success (and Hoffs has said so several times), their sound was quite different. I prefer them BOTH! And the Bangles deserve to be in!
