WHile they were only around for a brief time, Neutral Milk Hotel created "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea". Possibly the greatest album and band that nobody has ever heard of.

Maybe it's just because I live so close to Athens, but they're not too uncommon here. I've even seen them in Best Buy (just Aeroplane, though; no Avery Island), although I hardly ever run across any other Elephant Six bands.

Innovative? Yes. Influential? Technically, but not very far-reaching outside of "indie" crowds.

No chance unless some of their followers hit it big before 2021.

In 2021, all the people on the Induction Board will be people that used to write for Pitchfork and Blender.
NMH, Apples In Stereo and Olivia Tremor control may get in.
What will probably happen is the Induction Board will just inducted the lot as "The Elephant 6 Collective", with only Nuetral and the Apples actually getting listed.

HOW IN THE HECK DID YOU GET THE JOB AS HEAD OF THE "N.M.H INTO THE HALL OF FAME-CLUB"?? Geez, your comment is a ringing endorsement for one of the shortest words in the english language NO!!!!

Unfortunately, I only discovered In The Aeroplane Over the Sea 2 years ago. I'm not bitter about it, as I can hardly imagine, say, 'Holland, 1945' reaching the top ten, but surely it should have made a bit more of a splash outside the Indie circles.

Does anyone else out there think "Aeroplane" is kinda overrated? I think it is one of those albums like "Pet Sounds" or "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" that critics and indie fans name-drop just to add cool points. It's not a bad album, but I just didn't think it was as good everyone seems to think it is.

yeah.

Pet Sounds, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are name dropped because they're amazing and life changing albums.

ITAOTS also falls into this category.

I think NMH is an iffy choice for the Hall. One noteworthy album and nothing else later is not really HOF material, IMO, but they wouldn't be the first ones in with that track record. I would likely let them in simply for thast 1998 release, but not before the twenty-fifth anniversary of that album. simply because that's how the public defines them. Their music isn't half bad, either.

Dr W, most the public have no idea who NMH is.
Anyway the Sex Pistols got in on the strength of one not very good album ,so why shouldn't NMH get in on a beatter album?
Also "On Avery Island" is pretty good.

Influence: NMH has had an influence on the indie scene. 10
Innovation: ITAOTS is definetly unique. 15
COmmercial: nope.
Critical respect: ITAOTS is widely regarded as a masterpiece 20.

+5 bonus for ITAOTS.

55, not really worthy but definetly close. there credentials might get stronger as time goes on.

Another case of a band's entire reputation/legacy resting on one legendary album. But WHAT an album it was/is.

If only they had made one or maybe even two albums like ITAOTS they'd have no problem getting in.

I don't think there could of been an itaots, it's one of those albums thats a real once in a lifetime thing.

Posted by GFW on Wednesday, 02.22.12 @ 15:39pm

Yeah, you're probably right.

yeah, that was kinda dumb. I still believe ITAOTS is better but Nevermind the bollocks is pretty awesome too.
