Now, here's the problem. NOFX is an excellent punk band - long career, great catelogue, musical eptity. But did they do anything Hall worthy? Bad Religion probably has a better chance than them. All the politics might annoy the voters, plus their image isn't exactly Hall-gasmic.

I voted "yes", though. Listen to The Decline.

Innovation and Influence? Hmmm... Although NOFX is not one of my favorite bands (I find Fat Mike's voice to be nasally and whiney, and politics should be left to politicians) I feel that innovation and influence are a strong part of NOFX's aura. Without Fat Mike, we wouldnt have a record label to the caliber of Fat Wreck Chords, which, unlike other "punk" labels, has no long term contracts with the bands. Their contracts are for one record only. I do agree that Bad Religion is much more Hall-worthy, I just feel that a band like NOFX, who have stood their "punk ground", even in the face of big money (which has it's ways of corrupting the best punk bands). NOFX has taught that being punk is a method of making your own decisions, and that you have to do way more than just look "punk" (see: Good Charlotte)

Best band ever. Here is one of their songs.

"Re-gaining Unconsciousness"

First they put away the dealers,
keep our kids safe and off the street.
Then they put away the prostitutes,
keep married men cloistered at home.

Then they shooed away the bums,
then they beat and bashed the queers,
turned away asylum-seekers,
fed us suspicions and fears.
We didn't raise our voice,
we didn't make a fuss.
It's funny there was no one left to notice
when they came for us.

Looks like witches are in season,
you better fly your flag and be aware
of anyone who might fit the description,
diversity is now our biggest fear.

Now with our conversations tapped
and our differences exposed,
how ya supposed to love your neighbor
with our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry 'bout big brother,
now we got a big father and an even bigger mother.

And you still believe
this aristocracy gives a #### about you.
They put the mock in democracy
and you swallowed every hook.

The sad truth is
you'd rather follow the school into the net
'cause swimming alone at sea
is not the kind of freedom that you actually want.

So go back to your crib and suck on a tit
go bask in the warmth of your diaper.
You're sitting in shit and piss
while sucking a giant pacifier,
a country of adult infants.
A legion of mental midgets,
a country of adult infants,
a country of adult infants.
all regaining their unconsciousness

NoFX is one of the most infulential bands out there, maybe not just based ont he message they convey through thier music, but by the actions of the members. they have paved a way for skatepunk bands everywhere. that and the fact that hefe can play a trumpet with his ass is pretty amusing. but i wonder if they'd accept being inducted? probably, but it's a thought to ponder...

If you had to think for one second, you'd say no. However, they were the first punk band to have fun when they play and through their songs. Stickin' In My Eye, Leave It Alone, Seeing Double At the Triple Rock, if Jesus was here, he'd be in the mosh pit twenty-four seven. You guys will get in.

Posted by Seth on Saturday, 03.17.07 @ 13:11pm

NoFX? Hall of fame? Duh. Or at least that's my short answer.

Posted by Nana on Monday, 03.19.07 @ 13:49pm

Well, NOFX should be inducted; they clearly have the talent and years under their belt to qualify. They wrote an 18 minute song for Christ sakes! But, as all NOFX fans know, Fat Mike and the rest don't like publicity, and that is shown by the lack of radio play/media coverage/touring. They don't need some fucking certificate to prove that they are the best band in the world.

Perhaps the most overrated 'punk' band ever. Fat Mike is a hypocrite and a liar. This band is a disgrace to everything punk and hardcore stood for. NO NO NO NO NO!

Their name says it all, NO-fx. If these Never Weres get in I'd like to know how the heck they skipped past KISS, RUSH, BILLY IDOL, JIM CROCE AND RUFUS (WITH CHAKA KHAN, CHAKA KHAN LET ME ROCK YA CHAKA KHAN).

Posted by Jason on Saturday, 05.26.07 @ 14:11pm

Of course no. Come on people. the more time goes on the more poppy their stuff sounds. They are a joke band, not a band that puts out music with meaning. And besides, if your under 21 what the hell do you know about anything.

I hope they do. They definitely deserve it. If they don't I doubt they'll care though.

Posted by The Boss on Tuesday, 07.17.07 @ 22:54pm

NOFX is my favorite band, hands down!!! I don't care WHAT anyone says about them. They have re-defined an industry that was severely lacking in a lot of different fields.

How the hell are you comparing Kiss, Rush, Jim Croce and Rufus with a band like NoFX? Idiot.

Absolutely no chance.
So reclusive. Ask 100 people off the street if they have heard of them. 95 would say what?

They simply had such a small involvement, so few records sold, no real involvement period.

100% guaranteed not to happen, EVER.

Posted by Jonathan on Friday, 09.28.07 @ 10:56am

While I am a HUGE fan of the band, I just don't see what influence they had on music history. They were just different by using humor with politics to get a message across.

Posted by Richie Riot on Friday, 10.12.07 @ 18:53pm

punk in drublic went gold in 1994 w/ NO radio play, they also sold 6 million cds worldwide, not to menchine fat mikes label fat wreck chords, making way for up an coming acts that also have the potential to turn the industry upside down. they deserve this.

Posted by RedInReverse on Wednesday, 12.5.07 @ 19:04pm

Favorite band but for their sakes I would rather see them not get in the hall
Keep your legacy!

I was once a huge NOFX fan. I owned all there records up til at that time heavy petting zoo. I have watched there live show go to crap each time I see them. Fat mike is the biggest holly hypocrite ever. There early albums ex. Liberal Animation, made jokes at vegans and Liberalism. Cheese wheres my slice? Now look at the war on errorism, there newest piece of trash "you're wrong." He is a huge hypocrite. I was at a show in MN and he was a drunkass ripping on the private table section and the kids in wheelchairs on the side next to them for paying more not to stand in general admission. I bet his fat drunk gut would be sitting there sucking down becks beer and trash talking the crowd. You lost a fan, I am glad someone was stupid enough to buy my albums. Keep your politics out of my music!

OK, There Should Be An ALTERNITIVE Rock & Roll Hall of Fame For all of the Great Alternitive Bands That The Hall Has Been So Stupid as To Snub, Like These Guys. Freakin' Morons.

Posted by Tyson on Tuesday, 12.23.08 @ 09:23am

Hell no.

Are you all insane? There's nothing remotely innovative about "punk rock" culture after the CBGB bands and first wave British groups (save for the early indie/alternative rock oriented hardcore punk; Black Flag, Husker Du, Minutemen, etc. which would also be killed by the same cheap schlock.) This vapid modern "punk culture" wasn't the intent of what those bands were doing. That's why they evolved. I'm curious, have any of you heard John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols group Public Image Ltd.? That has much more to do with the punk ideal than NOFX ever has or will.

Groups like NOFX cater to people looking for a lifestyle. Clothes, hairstyles, the politicking; it's all ultimately meaningless and makes for cruddy, unoriginal music. Appreciation of music SHOULD NOT relate to your lifestyle.

Posted by Elastic Man on Wednesday, 12.24.08 @ 01:14am

seriously... screw all of you. If it wasn't for NOFX, there wouldn't be any room for the crap you call punkrock these days. Give them the respect they deserve. As for Mike's voice, well have you ever heard him talk? He doesn't have a low voice.

Posted by Flat Matt on Wednesday, 02.11.09 @ 23:12pm

Are you all f*cking serious? NOFX in the Hall of Fame? You're sh*tting me, right? You actually think NOFX will be in the hall of fame with megabands like Metallica? NOFX is barely known to the general public. This whole thread is retarded.

And furthermore, I've been a NOFX fan since around 1995 and have bought most of their music and met all the members. I must say that Fat Mike really pisses me off lately. He thinks he's some kind of holier-than-thou king or something. He talks against Christians for not being tolerant to gays, druggies, other cultures. He's a hypocrite...he does not tolerate Christians. He bashes our religion and stereotypes us. Yeah, he's real open-minded. He's a prejudice, narrow-minded pinhead and only is open to lifestyles that fit his punk rock image. Why doesnt he show some real tolerance and respect and stop bashing Christians in his songs? Then he would be truly open-minded and deserve some respect. I wont be buying anymore of their records.

I'm a big fan of Nofx.. Even If they make it or not I'm pretty sure it's not gonna affect them in any way

Posted by Ivan on Monday, 06.15.09 @ 20:25pm

look, honestly NOFX wouldn't give a sh*t about the hall of fame, and even if you hate them you still cant deny that they helped create modern punk (i mean the real punk not that pop shit) . most of you ignore that simply because you dislike their music/ points of view, which is ignorant. so does any real NOFX fan care if they get in the hall of fame? i don't, they still kick ass

Posted by Shawn on Sunday, 03.21.10 @ 07:30am

The roots of hardcore punk were in place way before these guys came on the scene...maybe you should research it a little more...

Posted by Gitarzan on Sunday, 03.21.10 @ 08:11am

Brian S. speaks the truth. All of the so-called "punk" that came after the first wave and early-hardcore served no purpose.

"If you had to think for one second, you'd say no. However, they were the first punk band to have fun when they play and through their songs."

Are you that clueless that you've never heard of The Ramones or New York Dolls? And the "Punk in Drublic" album is kind of overrated. That's all I've heard from them.

To use your terms, Shawn, lots of "real punk" is "pop shit" you dolt! The Ramones considered themselves bubblegum. Blitzkrieg Bop, Rockaway Beach, Sheena is a Punk Rocker, I Wanna Be Sedated, etc. - some of the greatest pop songs of the late 70s...and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Get a clue.

The guys in NOFX are big capitlaist in disguise. All that preachin' of lefty ideas leads to free boozin and green haired , hairy arm pit groupy lovin for ages. Thier true and only goal

Posted by scott on Monday, 09.3.12 @ 10:15am

Nofx is one of the fathers of punk rock along with sex pistols and the ramones so they should be in.

Posted by andrew on Thursday, 05.15.14 @ 18:48pm

NOFX didn't form until 1983 and didn't release their first album until 1988. They're many waves/generations removed from the "fathers" of punk.
