Luther Vandross was the closest we've ever come to having a modern-day Sam Cooke. Because his audience is/was primarily women and he sang love songs, his work will not be deemed significant enough.

Oh, please please please! ...It's Luther Vandross!!! What a genius. What a voice. What soul.

He sings and everyone else sits back and lets him own the music.

During Luther's real heyday you also had Peabo Bryson, Teddy Pendergrass, Freddie Jackson, Lou Rawls, Barry White, etc... all very good performers, but they basically were all about the same thing...romantic ballads.
