Why isn't Kool & the Gang in the Rock hall of fame??

Posted by Sneak on Sunday, 12.31.06 @ 04:17am

I cant believe you let in marginal groups like R.E.M ,blondie and the patti smith but not Hall and Oates , Kool and Gang, and the Commodores who had more twice hits over a longer period of time . It does not make sense to me.

Tavares and the Trammps had a very important
sound in their time. Very popular. They should
with out question, ...be Rock and Roll Hall of
Famers. Do it now before they pass away because that would be truly tragic.

Oh, this band! Earth, Wind and Fire started something and Kool and the Gang ran with it. "Jungle Boogie" is one of the rockinest tracks of all time. "Misled" is a classic too. These guys should be all over the Rock Hall.

I can't believe that Kool & The Gang are not in the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame".
Since 1969 K&TG has sold out more concerts, shows and albums than any other artist that are listed.
Back in the 1970's K&TG performed on every TV program from, American Bandstand, Johnny Carson, Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Soul Train, just to name a few.
Watching these brothers perform live is awesome, so much enery by every member of the band.
Those that feel that K&TG should not be in the "R&RHF", "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM".
James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic are the pioneers of Funk, Jazz, Rythym & Blues and of course Soul.
To all the "Gangheads" out there, don't forget to vote.
Yours Truly,
Anthony (Ace) Rodriguez - NYC

Kool & the Gang have been performing since the mid sixties right into the seventies with their jazz and Funk sounds of New York and New Jersey.
Wat before Earth, Wind & Fire...

Liam...Since synthesizer music was being discussed the other day, I thought you might take a listen to this song...don't know if you've ever heard it but it's really not too bad!! It's from 1974.

Thanks, but there's something up with my computer that won't allow YouTube videos to work. I'll probably have it fixed soon and will watch it then,.

LET 'S DO THE RIGHT THING. CORRECT THIS ERROR NOW!!!!!!!!!! KOOL &THE GANG BELONG IN THE ROCK &ROLL HALL OF FAME NOW.

Posted by MARY MITCHELL on Saturday, 04.5.08 @ 00:34am

Kool & the Gang should have went to the Hall around the time Earth, Wind, and Fire and George Clinton went in. The Gang was right there with those other groups funking it up. They got 9 #1 R&B hits, many top 40 songs, and has been forever sampled by numerous rap artists. What does it take for them to get in?

Posted by KoolMike on Saturday, 06.28.08 @ 15:10pm

Kool wrote the baddest instrumental piece by a band.Summer Madnest is still a classic song. The band has lost many members and there songs are still begin sample. The Lengendary Band should have already been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Posted by Denny on Wednesday, 07.2.08 @ 13:56pm

Denny...You're right on the money about "Summer Madness"!! Anyone who's into dark, moody, synthesized music would really like it too. It's totally instrumental...a far cry from other Kool & The Gang works.

Posted by Gitarzan on Wednesday, 07.2.08 @ 19:53pm

K&TG are a great jazz, r&b, and disco group. Anyone alive in the 1970-80s knows these funky dance songs: Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging, Ladies Night, Celebration, Get Down On It, Cherish, and Johanna. Summer Madness is also well-known and loved. I am going to see them in the Bronx on Valentines Day. I know it will be great fun. I hope they do get into the R&RHOF.

I like Kool & the Gang- but, come on- to try discrediting acclaimed acts like R.E.M. and Blondie? Amount of hits has got nothing to do with induction into the HOF- when are people going to realize that?

Posted by JR on Tuesday, 05.5.09 @ 08:53am

HOW COME KOOL & THE GANG HAVEN'T BEEN INDUCTED YET, THEY BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 1960'S AND THEY PUT OUT NUMEROUS HITS AND TIL THIS DAY ARE STILL PERFORMING AROUND THE WORLD.
HOWEVER, THER ARE PERFORMERS WHO HAVEN'T BEEN AROUND NO MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AND ARE INDUCTED...
I DON'T GET IT???

Posted by ACE RODRIGUEZ on Saturday, 05.23.09 @ 16:31pm

Why Oh Why is this band being over looked. Kool and the Gang are the most sampled band living I want this to be rectified .

MY VOTE IS FOR THIS BAND TO BE INDUCTED - NOW!!!!!

How many bands can you name that had a major hit being sung by a member who was not an original member of the group and when the group was inducted, the singer who sung the major hit wasn't included as an inductee?

THOSE INDUCTED:

01. Timothy B. Schmidt: Inducted with the Eagles in 1997. He was with the Eagles for only 17 years when they were inducted. He sang the Eagles hit, "I Can't Tell You Why" from 1980 and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" from 1994.

02. Sammy Hagar: Inducted with Van Halen in 2007. He was with Van Halen for 22 years when they got inducted. He sang many of Van Halen's hits.

WILL THEY BE INDUCTED?-YES!:

01. J.T. Taylor: Kool & the Gang first charted in 1969. J.T. Taylor joined the group in 1978 and sang lead on all the groups hits from that point on, which included Celebration, Too Hot, Get Down On It, Cherish, Joanna and others. It's been over 25 years since he joined the group.

02. J.D. Nicholas: After Lionel Richie left the Commodores in 1981, The Commodores released 3 more studio albums between 1983 and 1987 and they scored 8 more hits with drummer Walter Clyde Orange singing lead along with Lionel Richie's replacement J.D. Nicholas. Their biggest hit was "Nightshift" in 1985. J.D. Nicholas was from the group Heatwave. Nicholas was with the Commodores for 5 years and then they stopped producing albums.

there no qestion kool&the gang deserve to be in the R&RHOF.THEIR MUSIC IS STILL BEING PLAYED ALL OVER THE GLOBE.CLASSIC SONGS LIKE SUMMER MADNESS,HOLLYWOOD SWINGIN,FUKY STUFF JUNGLE BOOGIE,EVEN OLDER TUNES LIKE GOOD TIMES,DUJI,PNEUMONIA,JUST TO NAME A FEW.IF THEIR NOT VOTED IN, THE ROCK&ROLL HALL OF FAME SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

Posted by DARON on Thursday, 06.17.10 @ 17:42pm

Its easy to compare these guys to Earth, Wind & Fire. Both had the same style of music, a long cast of group members, same time period, and both had the equal amount of hits. Believe me, I believe these guys should be in the R&RHOF. As we all know, it unfortunately takes more than being a hitmaker to get in. I just think it would be fair since EW&F is already in, induct these guys! I know EW&F had more of a entertaining thing going on, but still....

I think Kool & the Gang should be RRHOF worthy. They had infectious hits like Celebration & Misled that get in your skin & bones. Humming those songs for days.

You would think Kool & The Gang would be in Hall by now. They have longevity, great hits, & respect from fellow musicians and artists across genres.

A very good sound from this group especially the singer. There are worse groups in the Hall of Fame...Electing Kool & The Gang would be smart decision in 2015,2016. KING

I still can't believe Kool & The Gang has failed to be inducted. Misled might be one of the best songs ever recorded. Love Emergency, Joanna, Jungle Boogie, and their hits. Roy has listed them and it takes up a good block. The lead singer has hands down one of the best voices. They can funk it up, a little R&B, play it straight up. Kool & The Gang has the musical talent to do what they want. A poster brought up Earth, Wind & Fire an excellent group who has been inducted. I don't know why they haven't been inducted. 2016 is a good year to start. KING

I think Kool & The Gang will be inducted within next 5 years RRHOF. They have fulfilled the RRHOF criteria better than most. You have listed in a full block their hits. I liked Jungle Boogie, Misled, Emergency the best. JT a great singer. A KING FAV band Kool & The Gang. KING

Posted by KING on Thursday, 07.2.15 @ 19:46pm

The last true funk band to be inducted was Earth Wind And Fire, fifteen years ago. The O'Jays, Isaac Hayes and Prince were inducted over ten years ago, though I would consider them more soul or R&B.

The Hall is a bit overdue to recognize another funk band. I would say that The Commodores, the Ohio Players or War (who was nominated this past year) should get a chance at induction. KC & The Sunshine Band deserve a spot however they are more a disco band. However, I think Kool and The Gang are a quintessential funk band. They are a group that could help make up for the Hall ignoring the subgenre.

Keep up the good work, ROY and KING

I'm hoping The Spinners earn induction this year. They are deserving but it will open up the current log jam of deserving groups like The Commodores & Kool & The Gang. JT Taylor is an excellent singer. Real smooth. That was a smart decision when the band signed him on. They became a hit machine. I always liked Misled myself. Kool & The Gang earned their notoriety and respect with 50 years in the music business. They definitely were innovative with the addition of brassy horns and funk sound with the rhythm and blues. I think Kool & The Gang will be 1 of my choices for 2016-2017 nomination. KING

So they are only going to induct 8 members from bands from now on! Here it goes for Kool & The Gang:

Kool & the Gang

01. Robert Bell (1969-Present: bass, vocals)
02. Ronald Bell (1969-Present: saxophone)
03. George Brown (1969-Present: drums)
04. Dennis Thomas (1969-Present: saxophone)
05. Claydes Charles Smith (1969-2006: guitar)
06. Robert Mickens (1969-1986: trumpet, vocals)
07. James "J.T." Taylor (1978-1996; 2001: vocals)
08. Clifford Adams (1978-Present: trombone)

THE REST

01. Rick Westfield/Ricky West (1969-1976: keyboards) died in 1985
02. Otha Nash (1975-1978: vocals, percussion, trombone) short lived member
03. Michael Ray (1981-1986: trumpet) short lived member
04. Curtis Williams (1982-Present: saxophone, keyboards) should be inducted, but won't be

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 03.4.17 @ 21:47pm

The trombone player Clifford Adams joined Kool & the Gang the same year as the singer J.T. Taylor. Clifford Adams is still with the group. Adams and Taylor were both on Celebration. It would look very odd if they induct Taylor without Adams. I don't think they will do that. Another case of remembering the singer, but forgetting the horn player. It won't happen here.

James "J.T." Taylor (1978-1996; 2001: vocals)
Clifford Adams (1978-Present: trombone)
