when the most memorable moments of your career are dominated by 80's movie soundtracks, it's probably not a good sign.

I disagree with you Mel. 12 Platinum albums. they couldn't all be for movie themes! He should be nominated for his songwriting abilities alone.

are you kidding?!! Please spin the seminal Loggins & Messina album...then read who wrote most of those songs. Kenny Loggins is a brilliantly talented singer/song writer, whose songs stand the test of time. He is long overdue for recognition by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I don't understand why so many people around here seem to hate Kenny Loggins. There's always a no vote for him almost instantaneously after a rare yes. The guy's been in the business since the early 70s with Jim Messina and then solo, writing and performing plenty of songs that are still played on the radio today. Maybe he doesn't score high in the innovation department, but tunes like I'm Alright and Footloose are what gave him the nickname "King of the Movie Soundtrack."

I think the issue with what that Twitter link suggests (IE Kenny Loggins getting consideration )is twofold:

1. No matter how you slice it, Kenny Loggins is far, far, FAR behind many other acts.

2. He's got a couple decent songs, at best. I'm Alright is awesome and Danger Zone is so overstuffed with 80s cheese that is hard not to like, but after that? What, Footloose? Yikes. Even throwing in the stuff he did with Jim Messina, I still don't think that quite adds up to a hall of fame career, and that's not even getting into any sort of dispute over if he even has any influence or innovation.

I suppose if you wanted to go the backdoor route and induct him as a songwriter, I wouldn't complain, but the dude has no business even being considered for the Hall of Fame as a performer.

What's wrong with Footloose, pray tell? If that don't make the house start shaking then nothing will. Anybody who claims to be into straight up American Rock & Roll and doesn't appreciate that tune has some explaining to do.

To call somebody with a half a dozen platinum albums and another half a dozen gold albums spanning 25 years as having "no business even being considered" for a Hall Of Fame is a little on the harsh side there.

Posted by classicrocker on Saturday, 09.29.12 @ 00:56am

Sorry if that seemed a little harsh there Classicrocker, I was an hour removed from a rather tense incident at my old workplace, so I guess I took out my frustrations on Mr. Loggins, lol.

But to answer your question about Footloose, to each his own, but its just too damn cheesy. Its in that unenviable spot where its not cheesy enough to be enjoyable on a so-bad-its-good level (like Danger Zone) and being too cheesy to take seriously. And I say that as someone who likes alot of American Rock and Roll.

I give Mr. Loggins credit for his longevity, but longevity can only count for so much in my opinion. If he was having consistent chart success for 25 years (like say, Bon Jovi or the Rolling Stones for example) I would consider that a decent factor in considering him as a performer, but his 25 years of success was alot different (and alot smaller) than the previous too examples.

I guess my main point is, in a world where acts like KISS and LL Cool J can't get inducted and bands like Deep Purple, Def Leppard, The Monkees and Depeche Mode have yet to be even nominated, what has Mr. Loggins done to achieve consideration as a performer? Cause all of those acts (save for the Monkees) have a good 15+ years in the mainstream and albums that went alot more than Gold or Platinum.

Of course, if one were to induct Loggins in the Musical Excellence category for his extensive songwriting for himself and other artists, I would have no problem with that.

Well if Kenny Loggins is indeed getting nominated this year I suppose he'll be the annual left field candidate nobody saw coming.

Just imagine Kenny Loggins making the ballot and Rush and Kiss not. Oh, the carnage.

I'm feeling giddy just thinking about it.

Posted by DarinRG on Saturday, 09.29.12 @ 03:06am

Maybe it says Kenny Loggins, but it will actually be Loggins and Messina nominated.

If that happens, then Kenny Loggins will certainly be in the "Danger Zone." :P

Real Time Bill Maher: There's No Such Thing As The Essential Kenny Loggins

Have any of you seen this video? After Sony/Columbia released The Essential Kenny Loggins, Bill Maher made this NEW RULE.

Does this mean he doesn't like Kenny Loggins music? Or was he making fun of Sony/Columbia's Essential series, suggesting that the word "Essential" isn't being used properly?

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 09.29.12 @ 07:35am

Roy, I watched the video. I think he doesn't believe anything by Kenny Loggins is "essential."

Jim, that's OK. There's no better place on the web to take out your frustrations than Future Rock Legends! I totally agree there's a couple dozen acts that deserve induction before Kenny including KISS, LL Cool, Deep Purple, King Crimson, and Depeche Mode. However, if I compiled a list of 100 of the most deserving people, Kenny would be closer to 1 than 100...

Tahvo, Kenny Loggins would be a hell of a left field pick for sure.

DarinRG, I agree that there would be multitudes of Angry Eyes if they read Kenny was nominated and Rush and Kiss weren't.

Donnie, I'm Alright with Kenny Loggins being inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame. :P

Roy- to answer your questions, I would say "yes" to both...

As far as the whole Twitter thing, I tried searching under rock_hall and Kenny Loggins was one of the artists that popped up. Maybe it was because rock_hall recently followed him. I took a look at the bands/artists that they follow and its quite a diverse array with several that are not in the Hall. You have Whitney Houston, The Cult, Kirk Franklin, among many others. Point is, don't get your hopes up. Then again, maybe I'm wrong. It would be nice to see someone Jann Wenner probably doesn't care about as a nominee anyway, right?

Roy, I wouldn't worry too much about what that condescending, arrogant, 24-karat asshole Bill Maher has to say. Anyone who laughs at his own material clearly isn't funny.

Back to Kenny Loggins:

He recorded some endearing, fun songs for quite a few movies. I can never resist the urge to tap my feet when I hear Footloose or I'm Alright. Kenny also succeeded quite well as both a solo artist and as a member of a duo (Loggins and Messina). He also had a hand in co-writing What A Fool Believes with Michael McDonald for The Doobie Brothers.

I could see the Hall sneaking Kenny in through the back door as a Non-Performer.

Bill Maher > Zach

Virtual high five to Bill Maher.

Posted by DarinRG on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 02:51am

You again?

Your act is getting old, Darin. Stop trolling me and find something more constructive to do with your time. Your behavior is hypocritical for a guy who accuses me of being a troll, not to mention that your assessment of me is quite incorrect.

Maher is as funny as unemployment, and he's a douchebag. End of story. Now get lost and go take a long walk off a short pier.

Get used to it. Your statute of limitations is up. I'm going to be the shadow to the cancer that you are to this site. I'll be a common sight in your rear view mirror from here on out.

Posted by DarinRG on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 03:08am

You obviously haven't read the bulk of my comments and would prefer only to focus on the negatives. That's sad, because I have a lot of insight and knowledge to offer here. Check my comments on the following artists' pages if you think I'm bluffing:

Bill Monroe
Screamin' Jay Hawkins
The Big Bopper
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Hank Williams
Howlin' Wolf
Wynonie Harris
Johnnie Ray
The Cars
Little Richard
The Stray Cats
Sonny Boy Williamson
Dale Hawkins
Cliff Richard and the Shadows
Willie Nelson
Asia
Pat Benatar
Huey Lewis and the News
Chuck Berry

Also, referring to me as "the cancer that you are to this site" is as tasteless a comment as I've read. Ever stop and think that some of the people who read and comment on this site either might have cancer or have a loved one fighting cancer? I know that you meant it as a figure of speech, but you chose your words very poorly.

Piss off and don't reply to me again.

Posted by Zach on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 03:39am

Cheers. I'll be seeing you.

Posted by DarinRG on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 03:50am

Might want to work on your reading comprehension there. You clearly didn't read the last line of my previous post. Now what part of "don't reply to me again" don't you understand?

You obviously aren't happy with yourself if you feel the need to harass someone over the Internet, especially a person you'll never met in real life.

Posted by Zach on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 03:55am

Make that "especially a person you'll never meet in real life."

Posted by Zach on Sunday, 10.14.12 @ 04:07am

I thought he was in already. I'm totally shocked that he isn't, and that you've ranked his percentage so low.

Some of the comments regarding Kenny Loggins discography consisting mainly of movie soundtracks are way off base. His musical contributions starting from his days with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Loggins and Messina series of platinum albums and songs he's written covered by myriad artists - from Anne Murray (Danny's Song) to Michael McDonald (What a Fool Belives) to a classic children's song, "House at Pooh Corner" qualify him long before Top Gun, Caddyshack, et al. Sorry, kids. You may not be old enough to appreciate his talent.

Bill
Really it should be Loggins & Messina,, As great as Kenny is, they laid it down,,, Messina was his mentor and they had the better tunes as a whole... IMO

Posted by RBFAN on Saturday, 09.5.15 @ 13:10pm

Kenny Loggins is much more than his soundtrack songs.
Loggins and Messina , Celebrate Me Home then later additional songs that have been the soundtrack I have grown with and loved for decades. If rap can be in the Hall why can't
The beautiful words and melodies of Kenny Loggins? Kenny Loggins should be judged on his huge body of work, his beautiful voice and his decades of staying power.
