Jefferson Airplane & Jefferson Starship are TWO different bands, stop comparing them! Just because there are a few same band members in both bands. Eric Clapton is in the HALL three different times. There's NO reason why Jefferson Starship doesn't deserve this honor.

Yes! Induct the Jefferson Starship! To overlook them is sheer musical SNOBBERY. That's not what Rock and Roll or the Hall of Fame are about.

They really should get a second induction! They deserve it! They should have went in ala Parliament-Funkadelic and Small Faces/Faces.

Posted by Roy on Monday, 06/25/2018 @ 08:58am

Jefferson Airplane was first eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992, and they were inducted in 1996. Jefferson Starship was not eligible until 1999. So they could not have been inducted as Jefferson Airplane/Starship in 1996.

I do think 'Jane' is a badass song. Surprised it is not an 'essential song'. It should be, IMO.

Posted by Paul in KY on Tuesday, 06/26/2018 @ 05:31am

I actually thought I saw "Jane" listed as an inducted song in the Song Project, and then a few weeks later I didn't see it, so apparently it was never inducted.

I agree, that's a major omission for the Song Project.

No way! They only had one song in the eighties that was terrible.

I personally think it's a disgrace to not induct Jefferson Starship. Jane and Stranger are just two prime examples and Mickey Thomas what can I say a voice from up above.

I would have to say that Jefferson Starship was huge in the mid 70's with the Dragon Fly, Red Octopus, Spitfire, and Earth albums. All are very timeless, and contain great hits like "Miracles", "Runaway", "Ride The Tiger", "Count On Me", and "With Your Love", most of which did very well on the charts, and especially the LP's. These are all preclusive to their hits of the 80's where they adapted their sound to fit with the times. Nonetheless, there existed a super amount of talent with this 10 year or so run with the band, leaving a legacy of a lot of Great, but often overlooked music. They should never be discarded as not worthy for consideration..

Yes, snobbery alone. Aside from the much-maligned Mickey Thomas, an amazing tenor/soprano but with horrible songwriting, let's not forget Craig Chaquico, Pete Sears, and David Freiberg. That extends beyond the 74-78 lineups, up to 1984's Nuclear Furniture. Critics hate the Jane-era stuff, but I was listening to Modern Times the other day and... what an amazingly orchestrated piece of work that album is! It is not a trend-following commercial offering any more than Volunteers or [name any Airplane album post-Surrealistic pillow]. Stairway to Cleveland kind of predicted their situation with the RHOF, they knew before the RHOF was created that they were headed for critical ignominy. And I say all this as a major Airplane fan. So they weren't dropping acid anymore: Well, THEY DID WHAT THEY WANT! "Alien" is rock opera without even knowing it. Every instrument played with gusto and all the arrangements are tiiiiight! I could go on.......

Why is We Built This City left out the essential song catalog?

Posted by saul on Thursday, 02/2/2023 @ 21:45pm

Hi, Saul. Just so you know, Future Rock Legends have something cool and exciting called The Song Project. Here's how it works:

At the start of every month, you can nominate any 3 songs you want, from any artist you want and any year you want, as long as they aren't already on the Important Songs List. However, you need to send in your e-mail address to one of the administrators first (I'm not an administrator, by the way) in order to get permission to participate as a voter for the Song & Album Projects. We have 4 types of votes every month: The General Vote, the Genre Vote, the Year Vote and the Artist Vote.

I recommend you go to either the "Contact Us" section to send an e-mail, or simply go to the "Project Comments" sub-section under the "Best Music of All Time" section for more information on how you can become a verified voter. Hope this information was helpful for you, Saul. Have a good night.

Very simply, it is a crime against Rock-N-Roll to not induct Jefferson Starship into the HOF! Mickey Thomas' contributions to Rock-N-Roll are more than deserving! Marty, Grace and Paul deserve to be honored for what they brought with Jefferson Starship too. The music speaks for itself… put them in. Just because the band has a similar name to its predecessor don't hold it against them!
