Gloria not only had a huge string of hits, including a few #1's, but she (along with her producer/husband Emilio) was responsible for bringing Latin music to a broader audience, paving the way for the successes of Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Shakira and Enrique Iglesias.

I know many on this site will say she's not rock. Sure, she had plenty of Adult Contemporary success, but listen to the beats on "Conga" and "1-2-3" and tell me that horn section and percussion don't rock. And just because it's not hard doesn't mean it isn't rock.

hi there,...Gloria Estefan should be inducted,..I believe that not only at the beginning of her career, but also in the years after along with the more recent years, she stands for quality, she does not "make" 50 songs a year like some others,I think and know that even much younger public likes or even loves her music.

and lets not forget ,...the Miami sound Machine.
they should be included for induction, alongside or seperate from Gloria Estefan.

waiting for this day,...regards John deG

Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan. This is a tough one! I don't know how the Rock Hall is going to handle it! Miami Sound Machine came first and produced two English albums. Then they produced one album as Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. Then it was simply Gloria Estefan solo (7 albums), but with members of Miami Sound Machine playing their instruments on those albums as well.

I think if you look for Miami Sound Machine in the Billboard Book of 200 Albums and the Billboard Book of 100 Singles, they will tell you to "SEE GLORIA ESTEFAN" and that page will tell you under which name each album or single was released and charted.

They would most likely be inducted as Miami Sound Machine because they came first (and their biggest hit was Conga), and they did continue to play on Gloria's "solo" albums.

I'm not sure who to compare them to!

The Miracles/Smokey Robinson & The Miracles/Smokey Robinson? MAYBE (Most likely)
Elvis Costello and the Attractions? NO/Maybe
Paul McCartney and Wings? MAYBE
Alice Cooper? NO
Joy Division / New Order? NO
WHAM!/George Michael? NO

The Miami Sound Machine would definitely not be inducted in the SIDEMAN category because Gloria Estefan was a part of the group to begin with. So you can't compare them to The E Street Band, The Silver Bullet Band, or The Revolution.

05. 1991 Can't Forget You
06. 1991 Live For Loving You

The appropriate comparison would indeed be The Miracles/Smokey Robinson and the Miracles/Smokey Robinson, since they went from Miami Sound Machine, to Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, to Gloria Estefan. They should be inducted as Miami Sound Machine, and that's it!

Latin Artists In The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

01. 1998 Santana (Black Magic Woman)
02. 2001 Ritchie Valens (La Bamba)

Whose Next?

The only other Latin artists with a good chance at being inducted.

03. Sergio Mendez (Non-Performer or Lifetime Achievement)
04. Los Lobos (Has been nominated to be nominated)
05. Miami Sound Machine (Gloria Estefan)

That's where it stops. Don't count on Jon Secada, Ricky Martin or any other Latin artists to ever be inducted.

Yes, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine should be inducted into the RRHOF. Not because of the Latino connection or the fact that she is a woman, but rather the influenece the group has had over popular music. It is dance music at its best.

I agree with the statement mentioned earlier, "Gloria not only had a huge string of hits, including a few #1's, but she (along with her producer/husband Emilio) was responsible for bringing Latin music to a broader audience, paving the way for the successes of Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Shakira and Enrique Iglesias."

I would love to see Gloria and her band get in as a first time nomination.

Actually, a joint induction case can also be made for Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estefan. Their case though is more similar to The Miracles than it is to Wham!/George Michael. They produced two albums as Miami Sound Machine, then they produced one album as Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, then Gloria Estefan went solo, but members of Miami Sound Machine still performed their instruments on her solo albums. If you add all the albums and hit singles from Miami Sound Machine to the albums and hit singles from Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, you get 3 albums and 9 hit singles. Since Gloria Estefan was a member of Miami Sound Machine to begin with, inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Miami Sound Machine would include their entire body of work, both as Miami Sound Machine and as Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. Then you have the 7 English albums that Gloria Estefan produced under her name only, and 10 hit singles. The members of Miami Sound Machine performed on those albums as well and appeared in some of the music videos. So combining Miami Sound Machine with Gloria Estefan's solo career and inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estefan would be okay. That would cover everything.

I don't really care what name they are inducted under (Miami Sound Machine/Gloria Estafan, or just Miami Sound Machine would make the most sense), but for their influence in bringing Latin-based music to the masses, and paving the way for many followers into the mainstream, they've earned induction with both artistic and cultural significance as well as the quality of music.

Not a huge fan, but she was a massive, massive selling artist, and that did open a lot of doors for Latino music in the U.S. Her and Emilio should probably be in for that alone. To say nothing of having an undeniably great vote, and serious band-leading skills, respectively.
