Old Gilbert hasn't been considered looks like he was ahead of his time with his ode to perpetual self-pity, "Alone Again Naturally." I wonder what his response to all this would be? Probably "Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day"

I think Gilbert O'Sullivan is significant for a number of reasons. "Alone Again Naturally" was #1 for 6 straight weeks & the biggest tune of 1972. Tahvo is right about it being a classic of "perpetual self-pity." But it always makes me feel better after I listen to it for some reason. I think Gilbert also was a little ahead of his time with the song "Get Down" which in 1973 was heralding the disco/dance scene that gained momentum as the 70s wore on. I also like the way he stood up to people who he believed wronged him. He sued his record company at the expense of his career for back royalties he thought they owed him and eventually won £7 million in damages. Sir Gilbert also didn't take any #*#* from rappers stealing his music by sampling it. O'Sullivan is responsible for forcing rappers to clear samples in hip hop music after he successfully sued Biz Markie in 1991 when Markie tried to sample (steal) "Alone Again Naturally." I don't know it all this makes Gilbert hall worthy, but I think he is somewhat unfairly dismissed as a 1 hit kinda guy. I like him.

classicrocker, I didn't mean the "perpetual self-pity" to be taken too literally, I was merely trying to get some discussion on O'Sullivan going as I surprised to the lack of it. Personally I've probably listened to "Alone Again Naturally" more times than i can count lol

Man you're right classicrocker, far from being a one hit wonder. have you heard "Clair(e)?" It was also a big hit. For some reason every time I hear the whistling at the beginning of the song, I think I'm about to listen to Roger Miller's "England Swings" even tough the songs are nothing alike apart from the whistling (And Clair's whistling only makes a very brief appearance)
