If he isn't inducted it will be the greatest tragedy music has ever faced. I think.

ES is his generation's definitive singer-songwriter, as far as I'm concerned. Despite lack of popular success, he's written dozens of classics. Say yes. fbr

Elliott Smith didn't need fame to be recognized a genius. This man deserves it a much as anyone else if not, more.

If Elliot Smith doesn't get in, there is something seriously wrong with the world.

I think of his situation as being the same as that of Nick Drake. An amazing singer-songwriter that died much too young. He will definitely be remembered by future generations of aspiring musicians. I would put him in, but I fell that, much like Nick Drake, he may not get the votes needed.

His influence on other musicians is enough to get him inducted by itself. Add that to the genius works he left behind. Eventually people will understand his greatness.

I took a piss next to Elliott Smith once at a Tindersticks show. I seem to remember it being pretty good sized, but that was a lot of pints ago.

Ewww! Anyway, I agree with you all. Elliott deserves every ounce of induction, but it is unlikely to happen soon.

Tindersticks and Eliiott Smith together? Man, wish I was there.

Speaking of which, how come Tindersticks doesn't have a page here??

That was a great show. El Rey Theatre in LA. Elliot Smith opened solo acoustic and Tindersticks are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. I spent most of the show standing next to Beck and chatting with the filmmaker Allison Anders. Shows like that are what I miss most about living in LA.

I don't think he's as influential as a lot of people seem to think he is - he didn't "bring indie to the mainstream" (it was already heading there) and he he didn't pioneer a new template for the singer-songwriter or anything like that. But he's still a legend who deserves to be respected.

Not that I care that much about the Hall(the voting political side of it) I do think it would be nice for his family and friends and would make more people aware of this genius who could blow people away with his songwriting and his singing and playing.
