Dan should be in the Hall Of Fame now. His contributions as a songwriter are tremendous.

Ed, I couldn't agree more. Not only is he a singer of heartbreaking talent in his own right, the songs he's written for others are the best of the best:

A Woman Left Lonely (with Spooner Oldham) for Janis Joplin
Don't Give Up on Me (with Carson Whitsett and Hoy Lindsey) for Solomon Burke
I'm Your Puppet (with Spooner Oldham) for James & Bobby Purify
The Dark End of the Street (with Chips Moman) for James Carr
Do Right Woman, Do Right Man (with Spooner Oldham) for Aretha Franklin
Cry Like A Baby (again with Spooner Oldham) for the Boxtops

Sign him up!

I would like to hear one reason why he is not in already. All of the last few classes of inductees wish the wrote as well as his throw aways. Not to mention but I will the legendary material we all know and love put him in already. Plus as a singer he is pretty damn good in his own right. So you have it,singer.writer, producer great at all three seems like that qualifies.

He was nominated and lost for the 2011 Songwriters Hall of Fame. The nomination was as Spooner Oldham/Dan Penn.
