Wasn't he the saxophone player for Bruce Springsteen? He did have one hit, but I don't know what it was. I saw it on a VH-1 show that featured 100 songs by one-hit wonders.

That's Clarence Clemons you're thinking of. Carter had the hit "Slip Away," and probably other R&B hits that have been forgotten because the history of R&B radio hasn't been preserved nearly as meticulously.
