First really famous Boyband,
but one hit album is finally not enough!

Posted by Flo on Tuesday, 10.3.06 @ 17:46pm

No, No, No! Do people even remember the name of the place we are talking about? My god, The Backstreet Boys? They are not Rock, they have never rocked, and they don't belong there, ever! And if they get inducted, I say we mob the place!

oh god... if the Backstreet Boys get it, i say we burn down the R&R HOF. x.X

"First really famous Boyband,"-Flo

First of all, I think that distinction belongs to New Kids On The Block. Second of all, I think the nearest they'll get to the HoF is being presenters for other people who don't deserve it!

Posted by Terry on Saturday, 03.15.08 @ 09:52am

..."they" meaning boy bands in general!! None of them should ever be considered for any reason!!!

Posted by Terry on Saturday, 03.15.08 @ 11:09am

Simply put: No.

I don't care what it's said about them: they're great and they deserve it!!

Posted by Enny on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 09:15am

Yes they should! They DO ROCK now. Listen to the current world tour!

Posted by KB on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 11:32am

"Rock" varies in its definition, and even boybands fit in there nowadays.

They've written music history, that's not deniable. And had more than one hit album. Whether you like them or not, they are part of music history and belong to the HoF.

Posted by Moona on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 11:41am

@Flo: ONE hit album?!? are you insane??? the very first THREE albums have been HITS!

I've voted: YES!
They deserve to be inducted into the Rock&Roll HoF!

"Some of you haters should really find a hobby" - Kia

Same goes for the person who has been spamming the yes button for this group all day long.

Posted by Alek on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 13:35pm

Do they deserve it? Lol do we even need to answer that! The Backstreet Boys have over come everything to be one of the greatest boy bands ever. (FYI if you want to get technical, the Beatles were a boy band too.) And to all of you against it, have you listened to the new music? I've been a fan for at least 11 years now, and I believe their new stuff is better than their old. I'd do more research before you say no. There hasn't been a boy band of the 90's that's stuck together longer. 15 years is a long time of music.

Posted by Kate Elizabeth on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 13:49pm

BackStreet Boys rock forever!! <3 They're not just another boyband.. THEY'RE THE BEST!!! U just gotta listen to their last album called "Unbreakable" - I'm sure u r gonna like it and would say: Hey, these guys do some rock sound... They're cool you know! ;)

I LOVE THE BACKSTREET BOYS AND WILL SUPPORT THEM ALL THE WAY!! =] !ktbspa! always & 4eva

Please stop this! I will say this but once; do not put the Boyz in the same category as the Beatles or Stones or any other band that can actually play an instrument and write a song. "With the Beatles" (1963) sounds like Bach compared to these boyz. And as singing groups go, they don't touch the Motown bands like the Tempations, 4 Tops and many others.

I know you all love the boyz - enjoy them - they play for you. But when you are all 30 years old, if asked, you will all say that you did not listen to them. I will bet every last quid that Liam has in his pocket on this.

Posted by Dameon on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 14:07pm

Dameon, really? Actually, for what I have seen recently and regarding the research I have done (as a professional journalist), most of their fans *are* in their late twenties, if not in their 30s. And they still buy their records and go to their concerts.

Of course you cannot put them into the same pot like The Beatles, but if you regard who else is already in the HoF, seriously, *those* people weren't anything but teenage stars, too, 20 years ago.

And you can't hit the YES button more than once unless you change your IP.

Posted by Mona on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 14:11pm

Mona - you say you are a journalist and who am I to question that. I don't know what your sources are, but judging by the comments I have read here, most of these fans appear quite young. Remember, I am in no way denying what they like, but please, let's be serious about this.

The Backstreet Boyz have zero innovation in their music. They have minimal impact on influencing that scene. NKOTB, New Edition and Menudo beat them by at least 10 years. And we won't even bring the Jackson 5 into this conversation. They being the bridge between Motown and Boy Bands. They have done nothing to help perpetuate the continuation of the artform. The era of Boy Bands died pretty damn fast. If the music industry was still driven by radio airplay alone, then the BSB would probably not of had a career. They need to thank all the video TV stations out there. They do not play their own instruments, and for the most part, they don't write their own songs. Their dance moves are completely choreographed by professional dancers (unlike the great Motown groups)! And the biggest Boy Band star of all-time, Justin Timberlake is nothing more than a really bad Micheal Jackson clone.

They are what they are and have made a very nice life for themselves and have made many pre-teens swoon. Good for them, but based on their discography, they do not belong in the same museum with The Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Who, Kinks, Temptations, etc., etc.

Posted by Dameon on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 14:38pm

In my opinion, the Backstreet Boys deserve every single award in the music business. They are part of music and that is undeniable, what were the late 90s without them? They marked an era in pop and rock music(YES! rock). Besides, unlike many famous singers, they CAN sing and are really talented. In sum, they are the best boy band ever and they have to have a place in the HoF!

They have had 13 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and have approximately sold 100 million records,[2][3] the best selling boy band of all time, and World's Biggest Money Makers

You guys dont even know what your talking about. You dont have to be all rock and roll to be in the hall of fame. Its for peoples music that has been recognized by many.

Posted by katarina on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 14:52pm

Dameon - just trying to get your point: Do you happen to live in the US? Because your are certainly right about your arguments, but let's face the truth, music industry doesn't have those standards anymore. And I'm not arguing that the Backstreet Boys themselves do not have the "qualities" the old generation had. (Though they do play instruments and write most of their songs by now, too.)

However, this is about the impact someone leaves in music history, for what reasons ever. A person like Britney Spears will certainly end up in most HoF, too, and let's be honest: Her qualities are even more questionable than those of any boy bands. And the Backstreet Boys have - and that's why I was asking for your location and the therewith connected "knownledge" - influenced generations worldwide and are de facto one of the best selling artists of all time. And unlike their career in the US, which was enourmous yet short, they have left such a grave impression in the rest of the world, that they've been on top there for over 10 years and enjoy more reputation than any other international act in several countries. It's a fact.

You do not have to like that, no. And I totally understand your concerns and arguments. But you cannot deny the facts about their success and their influence on many many people worldwide, even if the musical quality is questionable.

A personal thought, though: If their music is making fans all over the world still feeling happy after all these years and million of fans still go to their concerts, with their families and friends to enjoy their music - isn't that making their music a bit greater despite whatever musical "quality" is has?

Posted by Mona on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 15:08pm

Mona - to answer your first question, I was born, raised and still live in New York City. I am not denying the Backstreet Boys as a musical entity. (Well I am, but that is just my subjective opinion) They do what they do well and have enjoyed a great deal of success. They have fiercely loyal fans and have done everything they can to please them.

But the reality of it is that they do not meet one criteria as set forth by the RnR Hall of Fame.

Innovation - Zero

Influence - Close to zero (Similiar to the arguements against the Monkees being inducted, these boys did not come together on their own and form a band. They auditioned in front of a producer/manager who auditioned many performers to come up with 5 cute teenagers who could catch the imagination of the pre-teen listening audience.)

Perpetuation of the Artform - Zero.

This is the reality of it all. I am not saying that a pure Pop band can not get inducted but if the only point they have is sales then they are not getting in. Obviously their careers are not over, so who knows what the future may bring. The question I will ask you is; will people still be talking about them 25 years from now if they stay the same course? Here are some examples of non-induction for reasons that we have no answer for:

Alice Cooper - Shock Rock
Deep Purple - Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Joy Division - Post-Punk
E.L.P. and King Crimson - Prog Rock
Kraftwerk - Techno
The Stooges - Godfathers of Punk
NY Dolls - Glam and Punk
Cheap Trick - Power Pop and Arena Rock
New Order - Alternative
The Pixies - Alt Pop
Def Leppard - Pop Metal/Hair Bands (my guilty pleasure)
Motorhead - Speed Metal
Iron Maiden - Heavy Metal

These bands are credited with being at the forefront (good or bad), influencing these genres. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Liam/William - I know I didn't name every band and every sub-genre.

The Backstreet Boys and NSYNC and Britney just don't cut it as of now.

Posted by Dameon on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 15:40pm

Mona you really are on crack to think that the backstreet boys will get in the HOF. Fine they sold millions of records and sold out tours. Didn't write their own music or play any instruments. Hanson has more credit in their little pinky compared to the Backstreet Boys. This shouldn't even be an arguemnt are you drunk?

Posted by dano on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 15:51pm

Even though some of your information about this band is incorrect, I am happy to repeat: I am understanding your point of view and I am not saying that it is wrong. (Though the "Influence" part is questionable - though you're probably just applying your very own definition on it. Which is a legal thing to do, but it's just a subjective opinion.)

I won't try to talk you into anything, like you are apparently trying to talk everyone into being on your side. You obviously have a lot of knownledge, who am I to deny that?

But I'm just wondering - who are you trying to convince here anyway? Their fans? Their "haters"? University professors of Musical History? Or are you just trying to save the "vallue of music"? (Whatever that is in the first place. I still argue that the way someone feels about music is more important to that person than any label of "musical quality".)

No one will reply to your entries, saying, "Oh my gawd, you're so right, I will change my opinion right away!".
There is no point saying, that those people "have no idea", either. They know that they love their music and that it even changed some of their lives (atually happened - so much for "influence".).

It's not that this poll will grant the Backstreet Boys the entry to the HoF anyway. So why being so upset about it? Seriously, that's beyond my understanding. (Though I heard they call people like you "music snobs".)

And if they get a spot in the HoF eventually? That will be the time to be upset. But at the same time, it will be the moment for you to wonder, why someone decided to do so.

dano - no, I am not drunk, though I am wondering about you...? Your spelling and choice of words is very questionable for someone, who tries to leave a serious impression.

And I'm not even a native speaker.

And if you have read my entries carfully, you will realize that I'm not believing they will enter the HoF now, but am trying to point out some unknown facts. Ex gratia, they are writing their music now, even though that's not even important, as they have written musical history as singers and entertainers - not as musicians.

What about Michael Jackson?

Posted by Monadano on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:03pm

PS:

And just because some excited fans are posting here without consideration, too, it doesn't mean that's what all of their fans are like.

Posted by Mona on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:04pm

IMO the backstreet boys will never be in the HOF. Yes I understand that they have a huge legion of fans that love them. But they have no innovation and no infuence in music what so ever. I personally love the hairband Danger Danger. I have left sarcastic remarks on this site about them eventually getting into the HOF but I KNOW it will never happen.

Posted by dano on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:13pm

Since Madonna! Again since Madonna is in the Hall of Fame, a band like the BackstreetBoys that have sold over 70 million records worldwide should. Their songs have guitars in it, hers dont.

Posted by Mike on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:13pm

Hey, Mike is absolutely right.

Why didn't I think of *that* argument?

Posted by Mona on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:15pm

And to the person that said they dont even right their own music, I say to you Elvis & Sinatra. Perhaps the 2 biggest names in music history(next to the beatles), and they never wrote a song. Certainly not comparing Backstreet to them but hey why isnt Boston in the Hall and Bonnie Rait is?
Unfortunatley the Rock n Roll Hall of fame should just be renamed the music hall of fame.

Posted by Mike on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:23pm

Mike - I would agree with your comment regarding Sinatra and Elvis except for one thing. Both of them have recorded music which has stood the test of time. They have recorded hat is now considered musical standards. It was Elvis records along with many others that influenced the Beatles and other bands to pick up a guitar and sing. Sinatra is not in the Hall, but his influence on Popular music is undeniable. We cannot say that about the BSB yet. By the time the BSB's music does enter it's 50th year, I will be long dead, so I will leave that for the generations that have come after me to find out. If the BSB have in fact recorded their own music for their latest album, then I apologize for giving an uninformed answer. But I give writing as only one small part of a whole sum.

Mona - if it is I you have called a musical snob, then what can I say. The small list I provided includes bands and genres which I am not a fan of. So although it is not possible to remain 100% objective on the subject, I am doing my best.

Personally, I am of the opinion that fan appreciation is important. But in discussing these issues on this site with people of varying thoughts, it has been clearly deciphered that what the HoF nominating committee thinks and what the fans think are two different things. Obviously this is so, otherwise I would not have been able to present you such a list in my earlier comment. Believe me, I leave the door open for fan appreciation when making such opinions as to a bands worthiness.

I suggest you take a look at the Tom Jones board. You will see quite an arguement for his induction as well and the opinions given against which are quite similiar to the ones given here. No innovation; at least none that I am aware of. Minimal influence; at least that I am aware of and the small fact that they have done nothing to perpetuate the artform does not help their cause. The cultural impact left by them has been almost zilch as far as I can see and I don't remember that they did any videos which lept out and bit people on the arse.

So I ask you, where am I wrong? Please you whatever methodology you want in making a case for them aside from pure record sales alone. Believe me, I am open to others opinions.

Posted by Dameon on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 16:51pm

there first 3 albums sold 75 million copies!!!!! they have sold more albums than most people in the HoF

Posted by bsb on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 17:25pm

they r amazing and a legend!! they r the only ones who deserve to be in there!!!!!!

Posted by Nayeli on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 18:25pm

Well, on the same token, there are people who AREN'T in the hall who have sold way more records. As Mr. Dameon has been trying to emphasize, the HOF isn't and shouldn't be a POPULARITY contest (even though some of the recent inductees have caused me to question that). The "boy band" concept had been done before, the teen idol thing...yep, been done before, too! In all honesty, if you line these "bands" up, I can't tell one from the other. If the Backstreet Boys can do something that would make the masses...not just the hardcore fans...go "WOW" because they truly did something to rise head & shoulders above the rest then they might be taken more seriously by people who have been rock fans almost since the beginning.

One thing that hurts them is the fact that they were "fabricated", not unlike the Monkees. The Monkees are still struggling with being respected by the music industry, even though they eventually did some original stuff that wasn't too bad.

Have these guys been innovative...not yet. Have they influenced anyone? Not that I know of. Will they do either in the future? Possibly. Do they have loyal, tenacious fans? No doubt!! I think they're still a work in progress if they want to be recognized by the masses as a great band.

Stay tuned...

Everyone has their own opinion mine is,
The Backstreet Boys deserve to be a part of this! They had more than one hit album and they have done way more than music!
It seems a lot of you who claim they don't deserve it don't know your facts.
As for spamming, they actually have a huge fan base F.Y.I.!
Maybe NKOTB were around first but before Nsync, Breitney Spears, Hanson, there were BACKSTREET BOYS!!
They opened the door for a lot of other artists and they can be compared to the Beatles because back in those days, there were fans just like us!
I vote YES!!!!

Posted by Brandie on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 18:46pm

Okay, using the word legend to describe Backstreet Boys is a real stretch. Let me give you a stark example of what a "legend is;

John Lennon said this about Elvis Presley;
"Before Elvis, there was nothing."

Speaking of John Lennon, comparing them to the Beatles is truly laughable. If you lived during that time, you would know about the worldwide absolute hysteria that the Beatles caused. They had up to 4 top ten hits...AT ONE TIME!!!! Their performances on the Ed Sullivan Show broke records for the most watched programs in history...and those records lasted a long time! They changed popular culture almost single-handedly!!!

That is stuff that legends are made of...

Posted by Gitarzan on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 19:06pm

They opened the door for a lot of other artists and they can be compared to the Beatles because back in those days, there were fans just like us!
(Brandie)

With all due respect, the BSB cannot be compared to the Beatles; not now, not then, not ever. Maybe you can compare the fanaticism, but I doubt that as well.

Posted by Dameon on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 19:08pm

Dameon...sounds like you and I come from about the same era!

I truly couldn't tell you the name of a BSB song...at all!! Now, as much of a music lover as I have been over the years (especially Rock, and I've haven't cared for "Top 40" since I was about) 16 years old), and having played in a couple of bands...WHY???? I'm no music critic by any stretch but I'd like to think I've always had my ear to the ground when it came to Rock & Roll music.

Posted by Gitarzan on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 19:21pm

Why can't people just get along anymore? COME ON PEOPLE! Not everyone likes the same music as everyone else. I personally LOVE all music except the type you can't understand...but thats a whole other topic. I have and ALWAYS will love the boys. Just to me their songs and I have grown up together. When my Gramps died Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely came out and that song is talking about loosing someone close. Just because you're not a fan of a certain group doesn't really make that group less of a "music" band.

And for the argument about them not playing instruments first, check it out and find out the truth! They do know how they just choose not to all the time. Second, they know how to sing songs without any instruments. Take away all the instruments in the world and universe EXCEPT the voice...how many bands would there be then? Just a reminder I do love all types of music and I prefer rock but if all there was left in the world was people's voices I think I'd go with people that don't need instruments or beats to keep up with a song.

Posted by Jenny on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 21:05pm

This really isn't about liking or disliking anyone. We're talking about the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!! We're talking about making the grade, standing the test of time, being original, and most importantly being an INFLUENCE so much that people will be talking about you for untold years to come.

There have been bands/musicians in the past who I have enjoyed or had good songs I liked, but I have the realization that they don't meet the criteria (or at least mine) to be in the HOF. I was fortunate to grow up when rock was young, and there was a lot of pioneering going on. I really wish there was more of it now.

Just answer the questions; Innovation? Influence? Staying power? Does your favorite act REALLY have those things? If so, answer the questions!

Posted by Gitarzan on Monday, 06.23.08 @ 21:28pm

Funny stuff- BSB have about as much chance as Britney Spears- and despite what this site has as the percentage- it's slim and none.

The Backstreet Boys are without a doubt the biggest boy band ever, they sold more records than the New Kids did, they're by far more talented than the New Kids are, they're way better looking than the New Kids, they outlasted N'Sync, I mean give them credit, 15 years is a long ass time for a boy band to last, and just because they don't play their own instruments don't mean anything, the New Kids never played their own instruments, and they didn't even write their own songs, the boys wrote most of their songs, so yes the Backstreet Boys deserve to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, since when do you have to be in a rock band to be considered for the R&R Hall of Fame? I think any band that's accomplished a lot in the music business, definitely deserves to be in the R&R Hall of Fame, and the Backstreet Boys have done alot in the music business. How many of the New Kids have had successful solo careers? None of them, at least some of the BSB's have had successful solo careers. So in my opinion, the Backstreet Boys deserve to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.

Posted by Kelli on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 00:16am

Three words: It's About Time! I've been a fan of the BSB's since I was 10, and in my tenure of being their fan, they deserve this honor 1000%. The people that has posted their 'opinions' on the fact that they shouldn't be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame obviously never knew what they went through in order to get to where they are today. They overcame personal struggles as well as corporate struggles, and they managed to stay one of the best performers out there now. Certain people never, ever gave the Backstreet Boys a chance, and they should. I mean, like Kelli said, they don't have to be a thorough rock and roll artist in order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Example: Shakira. She's not a rock and roll artist, and SHE'S being inducted. What makes BSB any different from her? They're great artists in my book.

Please, think twice before saying that they don't deserve this honor, and they do. They've worked long and hard (15 years) to be successful and to please the fans worldwide. I'm voting yes, because this is one of the biggest honors that they DO deserve.

Posted by Krystal Hill on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 01:28am

Ok, I get that they're are MANY people that NOT into the Backstreet Boys. I have been a fan for 10 years and I'm happy and proud of it. I'm not only into pop music but I like rock and alternative and indie as well. They're are bands that I don't like BUT I'm NOT going around saying negative things abou them. Even if I wasn't a fan I would NEVER go around saying that the negative things that are being said. Think about it. They MUST have done something RIGHT to even be considered. Sure they may not be Ozzy or Metallica or Aerosmith, but they ARE uniqe and they ARE still the MOST successful Pop Band out there in the Pop Music world.

maybe the backstreets sound isnt what we understand as Rock'n'Roll music but who cares...lol...they deserve every award, because they are the best band of all times!!!! their music ist still GREAT and the boys themselves are still - i cant find a word that can really describe them- they are WOW!GREAT!HOT! REALLY GOOD AND TALENTED MUSICIANS!!!!! all the haters CAN'T DENY this fact----> the bsb are talented guys. this is a fact!!!!!!! and another fact: they are still famous and successful after almost 15 years...thats unbelievable!!!

to sum up: backstreet boys deserve this award!!!!

Oh crap, I guess they let school out for the summer. Now where have I heard those words before? Oh right, a real performer who should have been in the Hall years ago. Hey kiddies, go buy an Alice Cooper CD this summer and get back to me in a few months.

Posted by blah-blah-blah on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 05:09am

Dameon & Gitarzan - Let me say first that even I haven't figured out a way to defend the Backstreet Boys for the R&R Hall just yet. I would like to mention the sense of wistfulness I heard in the comments (especially Gitarzan). You spoke about wanting to hear pioneering going on. There is pioneering still going on, it's just that many folks fail to catch on to it right off. Think for a minute about the invention of the 7 string guitar used by the modern metal acts. The Stones, Hendrix, Zeppelin - NONE of them ever had the chance to use this instrument on their big hits. This is why I brought up the tech. argument w/my posts on Def Lep & Beatles. This is an impt. innovation, inasmuch as it affects the actual music itself.

Despite the fact that I probably agree w/both of you that this stuff is absolute tripe, it still needs to be given a chance. I can still recall a story on the national news from 1998 about older rock acts & longevity. The story in essence said that the old acts had staying power that the younger bands (for that time) couldn't match up. Those younger acts in question would have roughly been Metallica, U2, Def Lep, B. Jovi, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Green Day, etc. - all acts which then had roughly 5-15 yrs. success so far. Knowing what we know about those acts now, clearly that story missed the beat here. Simply, I do have a vague understanding of what the BSB fans are saying here. Even I must admit that they are still apparently remembered by some folks, judging by the posts here.

One last thing - To any and all fans who may construe this as support for the mindless, worthless, utterly bogus dreck all of these teeny-bopper idiots have put out, please be advised you are in the wrong here. Thank you.

Posted by Cheesecrop on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 05:41am

It seems that I was incorrect about how this band formed. Mea culpa!

They are still not getting into the Hall of Fame. But fans of BSB; fear not, many truly deserving acts are not getting in either. It is all about politics! So my fine young friends, let this be one of your first lessons of this miserable world. Even art (good or bad) has politics attached to it.

Posted by Dameon on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 07:15am

Cheesecrop...I will admit that there's been a certain amount of experimenting going on (things such as the seven string guitar), but my definition of pioneering is pretty much summed up as BAM!!!!! Everyone (or most everyone) has taken notice. That's just my opinion, of course.

Posted by Guitarzan on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 07:16am

Of course they should get the honor!!! What other boy band stayed around for this long?????? Obviously they have talent or they'd have been gone a LONG TIME AGO. Go BSB.
KTBSPA

Posted by Karen on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 09:46am

This "band" shouldn't be allowed within a ten mile radius of the HoF. And no, that goes unaffected by my opinion of this shitty, generic piece of shit band. I'm being entirely objective in saying that their innovation is non-existant and their influence may aswell not exist at all.

And whatever idiot called them "the Beatles of their time" (or whatever), please shutup. Even I couldn't slam the Beatles that much with a straight face.

Posted by Liam on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 10:09am

you just all don't know how many people BSB has influenced a lot not only kids as what u critics says but talking bout those above 20's, 30's, 40's and even 50's (so ya'll know, these seniors have created a fanclub for the BSB, have been with them for years and even some since they started) & to give you some information that you strange critics dont know (BSB knows how to play INSTRUMENTS, they wrote songs in each of their albums *why dont u buy one so ya'll know", and they have stayed their POWER in the music industry for 15yrs) so you Critics don't have the right to be so judgemental. Just leave it this way, if they do make it to the R&R HALL OF FAME then accept the fact and move on. If they won't, same thing goes. Easy as that. Why do we all have to argue on this? let it go and let it be. P.S: why are you so concern and/or bothered with it by the way? ok we accept the fact that you dont want them there but can't u just hold urself up and keep ur criticisms or throw it somewhere?

Posted by Kristine on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 10:25am

ello merecen ese honor completamente, es una lastima esperar tanto pero ellos son geniales, asi que KTBPA, y los veo en unos cuantos años en el lugar que se merecen

Posted by ori on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 10:25am

Kristine, you don't put the McDonalds logo in an art museum next to Picassos. And you don't put the Backstreet Boys in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next to the Ramones. The Hall of Fame is supposed to have some integrity, that's why people care about who gets in.

The "influence" all of the detractors are talking about has nothing to do with influencing the fans. It's about influencing other artists.

Posted by Laura on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 11:27am

so does WESTLIFE, O TOWN & Five counts? cause as what i remembered they said in an interview at MTV that BSB is one of their biggest influence. And oh wait, not only those guys, but the ASIAN boy bands and Musicians are either counted on that right? cause as far as i know they are well aspired there the most. Peace. No time for argument just keep it real. *_^

Posted by Kristine on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 11:31am

Jeez, I'm blown away by that list of followers there, Kristine. Three "groups."

No, those "ASIAN boy bands and Musicians" don't count if you aren't going to actually say who they are.

Posted by Liam on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 11:34am

Finally I can agree with Liam! Stooges for 2009 induction!

Can this silliness about Backstreet Boys stop now. And the kiddies who keep mentioning them playing their own instruments even explain to me what an instrument is? Liam once said that I should research that which I did not know. So I have spent the last 10 minutes searching many sites and have found no links or information regarding this band playing their own instruments either in the studio or live in concert. Now unless someone can show me otherwise, please stop misleading us old people with false information.

Posted by blah-blah-blah on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 11:36am

lol my goodness liam..... no words at all. do u deserve an applause for that?

and hey nobody's misleading anybody in here. we are all being honest. i know as a follower of these men i have honestly seen each of them play the guitar, piano, drums and bass on their concerts and tv guestings. so stop accusing.

Posted by Kristine on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 11:49am

I am not accusing; I am asking. And until someone can give me the name of a TV show or video or something where they are playing the instruments on their songs, I am not going to believe it. Usually, when you look at the inner sleeve of a CD, it will usually list the names of the group members and what instruments they play. I don't see this anywhere. So Kristine, I am not accusing you of anything. I am asking you to lead this old fogey in the right direction.

Posted by blah-blah-blah on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 12:44pm

Here you go blah-blah...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cNPxQdLP7g

They look like they're playing, but who knows what backing tracks are behind them.

Posted by mel on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 12:52pm

Thank you Mel! Bongos, drums, keyboards, guitar and bass. My apologies to one and all. But now I must ask, how do they dance while playing? This must be very confusing for their live audience. I thought dance was a big part of their show?

To all the Back Street Boys fans out there; has anyone seen them live recently? Did they play their instruments through the whole show? Did they actually play the instruments on their latest recording?

This could be the making of a new genre: Post Boy Band Alternative Classic Metal Pop-Rap. What do you think? I wonder if Boy George is a fan?

Posted by Gitarzan on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 18:57pm

Please!!!
To all the people that say that they don't diserve this... please...you know that they really CAN sing!! they're a really good band, it doesn't matter if they're pop...who cares!, the most important thing is the TALENT! and they have it. Not because they're a "pretty boys" means that they haven't talent, they prove all the opposite... think about it.

Posted by clau on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 19:37pm

i think they deserve this just because they've been in this businnes succesfully for 15 years!!!! with world wide tours and have sold over 100 million records!!!! and they have more talent that some drunk stoned guys on stage that can't even sing they're just screaming.
They're talented and the HoF commitee feels that way too, that's why they are nominated..
I mean BSB proof that you don't need to be on drugs or totally drunk to write a great song.. so chill out ppl... you should do some raserch about them before judging them.

I've voted Yes.. obviouslly

Posted by vanessa on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 21:56pm

Would all of you people give it a break, they are never gonna be in the HOF.They are just a second rate singing group that has nothing what so ever to do with rock and roll.

Posted by Brian on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 22:02pm

This is getting lame. Oh my god they are such a great band and have all these hits and sold all these albums. Can anyone say ABBA? They are in the top five alltime worldwide albums sold and are not in the HOF. Backstreet boys += no substance, no influence and definately no innovation. Never be in the hall of fame.

Posted by dano on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 22:39pm

NO we will NOT give it a break. The Backstreet Boys will forever been part of our lives. I'm 23 years old and I'm proud of being a fan of there's, so what? I'm not sitting here ragging on any other types of bands or groups. It's NOT worth it.

Posted by Karen Esquivel on Tuesday, 06.24.08 @ 22:49pm

I'm not sitting here ragging on any other types of bands or groups. - Karen

No one is ragging on your Boys. All we are doing is pointing out the stated criteria of the Hall of Fame and all you fans are doing is ranting how they have been together for 15 years and have sold millions of albums. Time together and record sales is not stated in the HoF criteria. Therefore, it is very unlikely that they will ever get into the Hall unless they buy tickets like the rest of us.

First of all I think this is the best band ever..They sing with the heart and they give feelings that only the fans can understand... It's more than a fan feeling..
Secondly I'd like to tell that ROCK is not only "breaking ears" music... I know that BSB are more pop but if you watch their concert live on msn (as don't think you'll ever go to a concert of them), you'll see that they are a little bit od rock too...
There are many ways of doin' rock...Stop considerating BSB as a boyband, we're no more in the 90s and if they really were a boyband they didn't stay together for 15 years...
Thats all

Posted by Laura on Wednesday, 06.25.08 @ 14:28pm

Having seen the Jonas Bros. and Scarlett Johannson listed here, I figure that just about every decent standard is now out the window. Allow me then to return genuine integrity to the proceedings by nominating the act we all want to see in here... The Three Stooges. You want real influence here? We have acres of influence:

Larry - The godfather of hair metal. Long before Aqua-Net, Larry's gravity defying hair set the standard for all who would follow.

Moe - The whole decade of the 60's owe a debt to him, as well as countles retro acts seeking inspiration from that decade.

Curly - Both hip-hop and hardcore owe him a debt of inspiration. Clearly the original human beat-box, Curly could bust a rhyme w/ the best of them. The connections w/ Henry Rollins are immdeaite as well.

Shemp - With his slightly longer, scraggly hair, Shemp is a model for both 60's hippies and 90's grunge rockers everywhere.

Tough enough to survive any mosh pit, but w/ that smooth side for the ladies (you know they've got it goin' on) the Stooges are clearly the model to work with.

Isn't there somewhere (like a fan website) where neurotic panty-tossers can go act like fools with a bunch of other neurotic panty-tossers? Your votes on this website mean absolutely ZIP!!! It's up to the nominating committee and they'll make that decision about this and about 10 other "BOY BANDS" in about 10 years. I imagine the discussion will go about like this...

"The Backstreet Boys....eh, NO!!!"

I really haven't seen anyone say they "hate" BSB on this site, but I think the concensus is that they're not an entity that will ever be taken seriously by the HOF nominating committee. All that your juvenile behavior on this site does is confirm that fact. Most sophisticated and knowlegable Rock & Roll enthusiasts are not going to give a "boy band" much of a thought.

"Hating" them would be a waste of energy.

How many boy bands are there in todays music? One and whos that THE BACKSTREET BOYS why becouse they have proven themselves able to grow and change there music to suit the ever growing change and yes people still think of them as a boy band and a one hit wander. When in the last 5 years has alice cooper been on the radio or even micheal jackson for that matter they havnt.

bsb's early albums where more pop why becouse pop was taking of the music industry 2000 /2008 its more hip pop rock and so on, bsb latest two albums are more rock.

I strongly feel the backstreet boys diserve the rock and roll hull of fame. They have proven they still have what it takes to put on a show, musicaly there brillant, there still dancing in there late 20's and 30's there shows are still selling out and fast

"They're not a boy band!!! So please stop call them in that way!"

The only influence they had was on other boy bands, and the only way to show their 'importance' is to look at the evolution of the boy band genre. Denying they are a boy band is taking away that one little chance they had of getting inducted.

Posted by The_Claw on Tuesday, 07.1.08 @ 15:09pm

The Backstreet Boys should be included in the rock and roll Hall of Fame. They are very talented and versatile at thesame time. In fact, they can play instruments as well. They are capable of singing and dancing at the same time. I never get tired of listening to their music. I think they deserve such an award.

Hey Gitarzan, before you say that, please go look yourself in the mirror and compare yourself to the BSB from head to foot. & most importantly, compare your achievements with what they have reached so far.

& oh, Brian, seems like you're so taking this induction so seriously. why don't you get a job or something that would make your life busy ;)

Posted by Kristine on Wednesday, 07.2.08 @ 09:15am

Trust me, I'm totally and completely comfortable with what I see in the mirror (unlike a certain insecure lot I've been observing on this website lately), and very happy NOT to be a member of some lame boy band!!

Kristine...Since you know absolutely nothing about me, my response to you is simply...Whatever!! The thing I find amusing about all this is this lunatic fringe voting. It's an opinion poll...NOTHING ELSE!! Nothing you say or do will have any effect on the nominating committee (not even writing to Bill Clinton!!). I think nothing of BSB, because they're a musical non-entity to me. All they really are is a well-conceived money making scheme...someone knew there was a market for this kind of "stuff", and a bunch of people bought it. There has been no talk of innovation or influence...just a bunch of psycho-babble!

Now as for this KTBSPA, are you concerned about it dying? I think I would be!!

Gitarzan: duh... there's no need for me to write to Bill nor anybody who can do more to let them in the Hall Of Fame. they will make it and you have to accept it. don't you know a word "open-minded"? ""I think nothing of BSB, because they're a musical non-entity to me."" -Gitarzan-

and do you think they think or care about you either? come on... are you a man or what? LOL...

This has become all too painful!

I wish all the BSB fans great fun at the BSB concerts. Cheer them on as long as you like and hope they will receive many awards.

The truth remains that based on how I have seen the RnR Hall of Fame go about their business when nominating and then voting, there is absolutely no chance this band will ever get in. Based on the criteria that has been set forth by the Hall, they will never get in. Sorry Boys.

But don't let that stop the fans from screaming for them. Enjoy the music you love.

It's okay to think that with the Backstreet Boys to be on the R&R HALL OF FAME is one heck of a shame. Although that is false, if critics think that it is true and they do not like the Backstreet Boys (for whatever reason) then, they should be able to express themselves as those who do like the Backstreet Boys express themselves. I particularly like BSB. Even though I respect everyone else's thoughts on them, that doesn't mean I have to share in them.

I love NKOTB too... but have something to say about BSB: since 1993 they sing, dance, and his family life don't disturb his career... I LOVE BSB... sing and rocks like nobody in this world... Go On "Power Pop"!!!

You guys say they never do Rock, but I want to ask,how about Madonna, she didn't do Rock too,but she will be included, how come? the hall is a place for those who has had huge effection on music history!and BSB did! They give us the true music, they pour their true feelin' in their songs, they moved everybody!

And you guys also said they have no Innovation on their music. But do they have no ability on other music styles? No,they're talented enough! Or don't they know it's a century for Rock,Rap,HipHop? No,they know it absolutely! But why they never change their style? The fact is they don't want to change their style, they want to keep their special BSB POP in this new century.Yeah,Rock,Rap,Hiphop are very hot, awesome, cool! But have you ever gave ur tears on these kinds of music?Have you ever been touched by these kinds of music? Have these kinds music reminded you of ur old memory? NO,I can say never, only the moving pop can do this, can live in people's heart deep inside! They boys realized that,so they don't want to change, they want to bring the true music, true feelin' to people's heart!!!
Remember what they have brought us no matter if you luv them now!Although some of you guys don't luv them,I can understand, everybody has their own taste, but plz don't say some bad words to them and misunderstand them if you don't know them very clearly!Thank you!they never hurt us,they're always trying to please us and have gotten it!They are such awesome boys or men! They deserver to be respected!

No one is saying that they don't deserve it because they are not a Rock Band. We are saying that they don't deserve it because they do not meet the criteria required to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I suggest you read the induction criteria; then you will understand what the BSB detractors have been trying to say.

Posted by Dameon on Thursday, 07.10.08 @ 09:25am

Y'all know what? They have 6 in stdio albums! All of which hae sold over 7.5 million copies all together! And don't even try to say that NKOTB deserve this, please where have they been! they only came back because BSB is still going strong. And you what? I am 15 years old, I am proud to be a Backstreet Fan, got a problem...deal with it. Backstreet Boys have been around for 15 years, my whole life, they saved my life, and they are gonna be around for another 15 - 20 years. And they deserve this. Don'tanybody say tha Nsync deserves it. Because well, they are posers of BSB. BSB came out first, and then them, and they did evrything BSB did. So DEAL WITH IT. Haters...find something else to do!!! KTBSPA!! Keep The Backstreet Pride Alive For Ever!! Life is Just...Peace and Love

Posted by Abbie on Thursday, 07.10.08 @ 18:05pm

You people keep talking and they still won't be eligible for another 13 years!! They need to start being innovative and they need to start influencing some people between now and then because what they've done up to this point won't cut it! They're just a fabricated "boy band", and they really haven't done anything to "wow" the masses. If they've been innovative or influential, simply state how (and it has to be significant...what "wheel" did they invent?). There's no "hating" here, just people asking you to state your case in a rational manner. Someone mentioned that the BSB had 13 "top 40" hits...So what?? Elvis Presley had 151!!! Not much of an argument any way you slice it.

As it stands now,the only way BSB will get into the HOF is if they buy a ticket. If you put NKOTB, N'SYNC, and BSB in a show on the same night, you wouldn't know when one group walked off and the other came on. Those are just the facts, and as the person above stated...DEAL WITH IT!!!

Posted by Gitarzan on Thursday, 07.10.08 @ 18:41pm

Haters...find something else to do!!! KTBSPA!! Keep The Backstreet Pride Alive For Ever!! Life is Just...Peace and Love - Abbie

We can't! It is too easy to pick apart these lame arguements that BSB fans like to give. I am waiting for just one fan to answer these three simple questions:

1)What did they innovate?
2)Who or what did they influence?
3)How did they perpetuate the continuation of the artform?

If I can get a reasonable answer to these questions, then I will stop hating.

P.S. BSB luv their fans most, you say you luv the rock,hip-hop,rap singers, but do they luv you? maybe a little, and not deep luv,but BSB not, they luv their fans to death, they thank their fans, they do most things to their fans no matter whether they want to do!Beautiful music and heart, that's a band which is really should be respected!

Posted by Cecilia on Friday, 07.11.08 @ 10:25am

OK Cecilia,

I am going to try and understand this.

What you are saying is that you all love the BSB's? I can see that! As to whether they rock or not is not an issue with me. It is quite clear that the title "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is just a catch all name. There are many artists in the Hall who cannot be defined as Rock and Roll. I respect the fan and who they like. My conversation is only about whether a band merits induction into the Hall of Fame. As of today, the BSB's do not. Maybe they will ten years from now, but I doubt it. As for knowing them; what does that matter? This is about innovation and influence which the Boys have none of. I am sorry! YOu say we don't read your comments; but it is quite clear that the BSB fans are not reading ours. But as long as they make you happy, then keep on listening and enjoying them.

The Backstreet Boys really deserve such an award. They have great music and great performances during their concerts across the globe.

Posted by jazteen on Friday, 07.11.08 @ 18:13pm

The backstreet boys were one of the most popular musicians in the 90s and are still around today. They actually do take part in writing songs now, and they do know how to play instruments. Also they have had a huge impact on the music industy. Pretty much everyone has heard of them, and can atleast name one of their songs. Also, unlike all other boy bands where only 1 or 2 people can sing, all the backstreet boys can really sing and, they're all talented.

Posted by kana on Friday, 07.11.08 @ 18:43pm

Okay...let's start out with innovation. NKOTB were contrived by Maurice Starr, BSB and N'SYNC were the brainchild of Lou Pearlman, and way before that, the Village People were the idea of a French composer named Jacques Morali. None of the above mentioned gentlemen ever sang a note with those groups. The members of those groups auditioned!

The point I'm trying to make is this...the concept of those groups had absolutely NOTHING to do with the members. The members of the groups had nothing to do with the selection process. That is about as far from being innovative as I can imagine!! If anyone should take credit (or BLAME, depending on your point of view), it's the aforementioned 3 gentleman who came up with the concept.

As far as influence goes, Lou Pearlman thought he could catch lightning in a bottle twice, so he formed N'SYNC. He was influenced by the fact that BSB made him a lot of money, so N'SYNC probably could, too. There...I found some influence!!!

Posted by Gitarzan on Friday, 07.11.08 @ 18:44pm

I don't care what some of you say... the Backstreet Boys are AMAZING!! They have been together for 15 years and are still going strong!! They may not have been the FIRST boyband... but if you think about it they are the only boyband that lasted after all these years!! I have been a fan for almost 13 years and I will always love them!!! KTBSPA!!! =)

Posted by Jami on Monday, 07.14.08 @ 05:53am

Oh and I have to say that I find it hilarious that those of you who don't like the Backstreet Boys or don't think they should be in the HOF are spending soooooo much time on here commenting about them.... us Backstreet Boys fans will always defend them and won't stop until you realize how amazing they really are... but if you don't care for them why even bother arguing?!

Posted by Jami on Monday, 07.14.08 @ 06:07am

There are some of us who don't want the HOF muddled with the likes of them. We give good arguments why they shouldn't be inducted, why their contributions to modern music are minimal at best, and you always come back with the same juvenile crap.

If you love them so much, terrific...go to their fan website and sing their praises from the rafters. This is about THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME, where they have no business even being mentioed...unless you know something we don't!!

They've been through so much, I think they really deserve it. And those of you that are complaining about them winning and stuff. Get over it. If they win, they win. If they don't, they don't. Don't go all negitive about it. I'm sorry they're not your kind of music, but they're a lot of other people's kind...and the only reason they'll win is if people vote for them. So seriously shut up, no one cares if you like them or not. I will be honest, I did vote for them...and like I said before, I think they deserve it!

Posted by Kimberly on Monday, 07.28.08 @ 18:44pm

Ok, just wanna make sure I understand what you said. The BSB deserve induction because... they've been together a long time? That's about the only reason you gave. In that case, let me know when the Mills Brothers get in.

And of course, just a gentle reminder, votes on this site don't mean squat. It's like voting on who will win the World Series: it has absolutely no bearing on the outcome.

I'm certainly aware that the votes on this site don't mean squat "officially". I might disagree w/you about the relevance of the site though. The Hall is a money making venture. Deep down inside Wenner and the boys want to have some controversy stirring, if only to guarantee interest in the potential audience. In addition their little club can only backslap each other so long w/out feeling the need for some outside gratification. I have a feeling that quietly there is someone from either the Hall or RS who wanders on over to this site every couple of weeks just to see what is being written here.

Call it validation of the site...

Or call it rampaging paranoia on my part... no, it's site validation.

Now if I could just get those voices out of my head... The Backstreets... doing the Mills Brothers... OPUS ONE... AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!!

Posted by Cheesecrop on Tuesday, 07.29.08 @ 06:04am

The arguing over whether they will or whether they won't is a waste of time. I was going to say stupid but I want to be nice. What difference will it really make if they are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? None. Or if they are aren't? Again, none. There will still be the fans "Keepin' the Backstreet Pride Alive" and there will still be the other guys trying to tell them they're wrong or whatever. It gets tiring thinking about it.

Why not put your creative energy, and many of you are creative(even the other guys, almost especially), into something worthwhile instead of stirring up bad feelings and frustration.

I am a fan. I like most of their music, not all cause Like A Child was lame. But I like a lot (not alot, cause that's wrong, as someone rudely pointed out) of different music. I may not like some of the so-called worthy acts that have been mentioned but who cares. I think what music you like is personal and I don't think you can influence anyone into liking something if they've already decided they don't. So don't even try.

regardless of what anyone says they had a major influance on music as a whole. they have sold over 75 million albums internationally and have recorded 6 successfull albums and a 7th on the way. the term boy band has a negative connotaion simply because of there were a slew of talentless groups that attempted to follow in the backstreet boys footsteps. the backstreet boys are of course the only ones that are still going strong. why? because they are the only ones with the talent and the conviction for the industry. they deserve this and if they are still around in 2021 (which they will be) they will deserve it even more.

Posted by ktbspa on Saturday, 08.9.08 @ 13:32pm

So, ktbspa...just exactly HOW were the BSB so influential, or innovative, or anything other than your typical "boy band" (hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's what they are!!!) No one else on this page seems to be able to answer this...maybe you can. When you say "major influence", that's a pretty big statement. Who do you know of that was directly influenced by the BSB? What "innovations" did they bring to the table that enhanced or broke new ground for the perpetuation of performing or recording?

I'm really at a loss, and if someone can come up with one good argument on why these guys are so unique and innovative, I would certainly listen. Personally, I know I can't come up with any.

Posted by Gitarzan on Saturday, 08.9.08 @ 14:01pm

Posted by SpaceTrucker on Saturday, 08.9.08 @ 14:54pm

Innovation? Personally, as a 12 year fan, I think they're pretty innovative. Not exactly sure how to put the argument for it )other than, "Heck yes, they're innovative") but the best I can do is this- when I listen to their music, I hear the difference. Were they the first boy band ever? No. Are they the best? Yes, they are, 100%. Each one of their records is truly unique. They write a lot of their own songs, play instruments (though they may not on every track, they know how, and they do on occasion). I'm not sure what you mean by innovation, but that's what I think of.
Influence? Personally, they've been a major influence on my life, as well as many of my friend's lives. They WERE my childhood, and they're music is still a big part of my life. On a larger scale, they really ushered in the pop era- to me at least. Honestly, I don't know any songs from New Kids on the Block (and have only heard of them from random VH1 specials).
Staying power? For staying power only time can tell, really. But so far, they've been together for 15 years and are still going strong (even if they're missing Kevin). I know, I went to their concert two days ago, and I can honestly say it's the best concert I've ever been to.
And I have to contest that the Backstreet Boys are not just your typical boy band. Every other boy band I know of sounds fine on their records (in my opinion) but they really suck live. The Backstreet Boys have talent (gasp all you want, it's true and undeniable if you can put aside your dislike for the "pop" genre) and sound just as amazing live as they do on their records. The boys can sing.

I've always wanted to ask this of a fan of the teen-pop wave of a decade ago... who are your favorite acts now? I promise not to malign in any way. I'm just curious.

Posted by Cheesecrop on Monday, 08.11.08 @ 05:51am

Okay, seriously. Do we have to be arguing about this now? It's still another 13 years before they can even be considered.

I'm a fan but I'll say this: No, if they were do be considered today, they wouldn't get in. They DON'T have the influence that the Beatles or the Jackson 5 have. But, who is to say that won't change in 5-10 years time, and come 2021 they do have the influence that all the naysayers are saying they need to get in.

13 years is a long time, plenty of time for something huge to happen. And that's why I voted yes, not because I'm some mindless fan that thinks they can do no wrong.

I can't predict the future, and I'm not saying that they will definitely do something worthy of HoF induction. I'm saying there's a chance.

Also, to Cheesecrop: You asked who I listen to now? Aside from still being a Backstreet fan, I've got Nickleback, Hanson (who I will say, at least at this moment, deserves induction more than Backstreet does), Yellowcard and Simple Plan on my iPod.

Err... "were to be", not "were do be."

Typos suck. Bleh.

Maybe, if these guys were really the FIRST boy band (which I doubt), then I was thinking that they may have a case for induction. That is, until I saw Game 1 of the World Series.

Did anyone else notice how they butchered the National Anthem? Did anyone else feel the twinge of nausea that I did? Seriously, these guys were almost as bad as Roseanne Barr!

Please, at least not in my lifetime.

okay NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK were not bigger than the backstreet boys sorry to burst your bubble. The backstreet boys are soo much more deserving. they are amazing and no one can beat them in my eyes. And i do consider much of their music as rock.. so i think you should stop listening to their old music and maybe go out and buy their newest cd because if you dont think it's rockish enough than you have no clue what you are talking about.

yes and to the guy who said that the Backstreet boys are gay.. sorry to break it to you 2 out of the 4 are married 1 has a child. another was engaged twice and 1 dated paris hilton.. so unless your saying paris hilton is a man... you also have no idea what you are talking about.

they have impacted so many lives not just in the US but in europe and canada soo if you don't like them to bad for you. because if their fans have any say they will be enducted.

Posted by Sarah on Sunday, 11.16.08 @ 17:55pm

Sarah, how on Earth are you defining bigger? I'm not saying you're wrong, but then again, I don't see the BSB as ever having had their own Sat. Morning cartoon either. And their new stuff isn't rock, at least not by my standards. Rock isn't made with a drum machine and with completely synthesized instruments.

"they have impacted so many lives not just in the US but in europe and canada"

All of whom will say, "I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I *did* listen to them back in the day."

"because if their fans have any say they will be enducted."

Fans have absolutely no say whatsoever in the induction process, so forget it.

Posted by Philip on Sunday, 11.16.08 @ 18:12pm

Sarah you can be a gay man and be married to a woman. I know this from personal experience. And I don't think Mike was refering to "gay" in that context anyway.

Innovation
Influence
Perpetuation

You see, my comments are not based on hatred towards a band. I follow only the facts.

Well I've read a myriad of comments here, and for the most part have just been browsing.
However I have to make a comment about all the seeming disrespect I see on here for The Backstreet Boys.
Before I get any eye rolls and comments from the music snobs on here i.e Dameon and Blah-Blah- Blah, I will let you know I am a HUGE Beatles fan.
I grew up with The Beatles,I was a young child when they were popular and they were my first music love.
My teen years were influenced by The teeny groups of the time,(The Jackson 5 , The Osmonds, The Partridge Family)
But also by other teen idols /artists namely T.Rex , Sweet,Slade,Elton John ,Queen,Mud,Shawadi wadi The BeeGees and a dozen other popular groups/artists of the time.
The Eighties increased my love of music with artists such as Wham(group) and George Micheal(Solo) Michael Jackson , The Eurythmics ,Duran Duran, Paul Young, Wet Wet Wet And who could forget the Amazing Live Aid Concert and all the artists that sang there.
I loved them all.
Then came the 90's And Take That, and shortly after 1n 1993 The Backstreet Boys were born as a group.
The Backstreet Boys deserve an ENORMOUS amount of respect, not only because of their vocal talent (which I must admit, I have never found harmonies as perfect as theirs in ANY group)
But the whole struggle they have had , from greedy managers ripping them off,to them continuing when they were sick, losing family members , and all the time contiuing to perform all over the world.
I'm sure if you knew half the things they have had to face as a group and individually, you would not speak so disrespectivly about them.
It seems you are misinformed about this group
They have written and co written their own music from their early days.
They DO play instruments. Drum guitar and piano to name a few.
BSB are still together as a group after 15 years.
The Beatles called it quits on each other 13 years from Paul and Johns first meeting (The Beatles werent even formed then)
SO for their outstanding contribution to music , for their longevity in the business and some of the best pop songs of the 90's and their continuing contribution to music , they most certainly DO deserve to be this hall of fame.
If you would care to listen to" Unsuspecting Sunday Afternoon" on You Tube From their latest Unbreakable CD you will hear that it is as good as any Beatles song and it was written by all of The Backstreet Boys..
Give them credit where credit is due and stop this music snobbery, they deserve every award they are nominated for, and they desrve their place here too.

Posted by MEL on Thursday, 01.1.09 @ 06:21am

Well Well Well...if you've listened to and experienced all this wonderful music, then I'd have to think you'd even be less impressed with BSB. Look back in rock history at "teen idols" (start with Frankie Avalon, Fabian, etc..., and work your way up) and see how many are in the HOF. Look at back covers of Tiger Beat and see how many are in. You'll find there are none. They were someone's money-making idea...contrived, packaged up and propped up to make money. Look at Fabian...had the look but couldn't sing a lick. His voice was so reverbed that you couldn't understand him...but someone bought it. This has been happening for years. If someone did a mix of songs of NKOTB, BSB, and N'sync and played it for someone who wasn't familiar with them, they would think they're listening to the same group...not exactly stuff legends are made of.

Now, ask yourself...could any of these groups have found each other, wrote their own material (which initially none of them did), recorded, and tried to sell themselves to the public without all the help they got? The answer is a resounding NO!!! With your sense of musical knowledge, you know how difficult (if not impossible) it would've been.People keep calling people like Dameon, Blah, and me "haters" which couldn't be further from the truth. To hate someone, they would have to be relevant in our lives...which they are not. Nor are they really relevant to rock history. People on this page keep talking about "15 years"...gee, wiz!!! No one will be talking about these guys in 50 years, just like all the other teen idols they will fade away.

I have played for a long time...was in my heyday when they didn't hand out recording contracts to just anyone and generally thought I was pretty good at it. I felt I paid my dues but just didn't measure up to the masters of the instrument...and I was okay with that. When some producer holds auditions and packages up "boy bands" and "teen idols" as nothing more than a money making scheme, it just makes me shake my head and think "Why are people buying this when there are so many great and legitimate artists out there?"

With the musical knowledge you possess, can you answer this???

Posted by Gitarzan on Thursday, 01.1.09 @ 08:36am

Well Well -

I took your advice & went to You Tube and clicked onto "Unsuspecting Sunday Afternoon". Normally I might tear a BSB fan apart, but in fact you are quite right about this song. Guitar, piano, and above all, REAL DRUMS! None of that machine stuff. The song itself really isn't bad, and I imagine any hard rock act could put their own spin on it as a change of pace recording. On this one I have to give the credit where it's due.

My next question of course is why didn't they follow up on all the new songs like that one? While I was there I saw a listing for a song called "One In A Million". On the hopes that perhaps they had taken a shot at the GNR song of the same name, I clicked on. Regrettably I found myself confronted w/the same old same old.

Score one for the song as an individual piece, but the jury's still out on the total package.

Posted by Cheesecrop on Thursday, 01.1.09 @ 13:40pm

Well Well Well...I don't believe I am a snob and I certainly don't hate any band. No one is disrespecting the BSB, we are just giving our opinons. And I certainly will not say that every BSB song sux. I cannot say that because I have not heard all their music. I am sure they have recorded a few tracks that I might even like. But I don't want to hear about all they had to battle through. Every band that has ever recorded music has had to deal with the same b.s. Bad publishing deals, sleazy managers, horrible recording contracts. That is not a reason for induction. Harmonies - listen to the Bee Gees and the Beach Boys. And I am sorry - you cannot put the BSB and the Beatles in the same sentence. If you want to call me a snob for saying that, then I accept it proudly.

Posted by Blah-blah-blah on Friday, 01.2.09 @ 05:41am

i gotta say. some of you guys who dissing them are being really ignorant. first of all the boys didnt audition for anything. aj, howie and nick formed together BY THEMSELVES at different auditions. they met kevin at disneyworld and asked if they'd like to join them. THEN lou pearlman came in and worked with them but lou said they needed one more person so kevin suggested his cousin BRIAN. so they arent fabricated. second the backstreet boys have so much talent. they arent like all the other boy bands. they have surpassed that. nkotb were gone for 15 years, nsync broke up in like 3 years, 98 degrees is gone. i can keep going if you like. they have made it through so much. they deserve some respect. and if you've never heard them sing acapella then i suggested you go listen to it. definetly no the typical boy band. these men have actual talent. they right their own stuff, they are a real band. if you wanna here harmony listened to the first track on the unbreakable album. its called "the intro". unbelievable talent.
i put YES :]

Posted by kristen on Saturday, 01.3.09 @ 14:09pm

kristen...I think you're just slightly confused;

"Lou Pearlman was inspired by New Kids on the Block in the 1980s to create his own clean-cut boy band. After a series of newspaper advertisements and auditions in 1992 and 1993, he recruited A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter, who met each other in several auditions and became friends."-Wikipedia (not always a reliable source, but it is in this case...)

They auditioned, kristen! Lou Pearlman CREATED them!! What do you think they were "auditioning" for when they became friends???

Posted by Gitarzan on Saturday, 01.3.09 @ 14:54pm

he chose aj nick and howie that is true but nick aj and howie became friends with kevin and kevin brought brian. so that is half true. but ya im must have missed the first part. but still not as fabricated as everyone thinks they are

Posted by kristen on Saturday, 01.3.09 @ 23:24pm

kristen...If Lou Pearlman hadn't set up the auditions, arranged recording sessions, hired the (real) musicians, had others write the initial music, and set up the appearances in malls and theme parks there would be no BSB...period. All they did was show up and sing, which is hardly the hard part.

The manager picked them, not vice versa as in most cases

This decade has been a sad, sad time for music history in comparison with decades of the past (and that's coming from a 16-year old)... =[

On that thought the Backstreet Boys are the ONLY mildly deserving teen beat pop boy band to come out of the whole bunch, as it appears they are basically a thing of Y2K-turn-of-millennium nostalga (although they are coming out with an album this year according to Billboard)... nothing that will even be considered when the time comes. Hell, Jonas Brothers stand a better chance if they can actually keep it up a few more years

BSB were a Top 40 Pop mogul... nothing more and nothing influential

Posted by Paul Kagebein on Thursday, 02.5.09 @ 09:29am

As stated before, unlikely to be considered (just as N SYnc, Britney Spears, etc. won't be when their time comes). I mean, unless they do something out of this world in terms of their work, which seems unlikely.

Posted by JR on Thursday, 02.5.09 @ 10:50am

They were a chart topper popular among a demographic of teenagers and young adults, which NORMALLY results in influential success (Elvis, The Beatles, Ramones, Nirvana... all just about exclusively popular amongst younger people in their primes)... the only difference is that the teens that enjoyed those bands were angsty and rebellious and were getting a message from the work. BSB is targeted at stereotypical adolescents who love to be force-fed pop culture and celebrities. BSB fits the bill just fine for that, and made $100,000,000 plus doing so. Sadly for them, happily for true fans of music, that means little for lasting influence. Besides, they weren't even the first big boy band. New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits first.

"Nah, just keep lookin', man. You'll find the goods eventually."

Thanks for the advice, but I dont need to look. =] I've found plenty of wonderful artists with amazing music to listen to. That's the good thing about music, even if it's from the 50's it remains timeless in some sort of digital format ready for everyone to listen to until the day that technology ceases to exist. So I have listened to (basically) every song by every artist in the hall and hundreds upon hundreds of other artists, so I have plenty of goods already found.

But I wish they would continue to be produced.

It would be nice to have more than a dozen artists in my generation that I both enjoy and see being around longer than ten years. The few gems I do find in today's music usually receive little critical success, which of course isn't what music is about, and it's nice being about to have a few little secret tunes to impress friends with, but it would it would be nice to know theyre well known enough to be successful and keep making music for years to come. And it's always nice to see a favorite excel. Sadly the ones that do excel are like Backstreet Boys.

"If you haven't found it yet you haven't been looking hard enough."

Yeah, I probably know more music than most of the guys who work in the Hall. I'm just picky.
My point was there is still some great stuff out there, most of it just doesn't become extremely popular. Take The Used and Silverstein for examples. Both are amazing listens, but neither (especially the latter) has an extremely (mainstream) fan base, and it would be more ideal for them to get the recognition they deserve instead of it going to people like Britney Spears and Rihanna (no offense to Rihanna) week after week.

See, this is what I love about music forums and such... I actually learned a few names I had never heard before, and after listening to a few you taught me what I have been missing. It's insanely annoying to be a music fan living where I live because nobody knows anything, (and I'm just starting to expand my tastes a lot) but I know more music than anyone else I know in person (which is sad considering). I have nobody to discuss good music with, because nobody knows any. Everyone I know listens to bands you can find in the first couple pages of a search on MySpace.

I was already familiar with Franz and Fugazi, so I'm going to check out the rest of the bands you listed in the order you did so.

Same old same old, huh Liam? It's all too set & easy. Just choose the CORRECT acts with the CORRECT style that matter to the CORRECT people.

Don't get me wrong, I do like some of those acts myself. It's the precision of it, though. I bet I could make up a band that you'd buy into if they sounded obscure enough.

Try flubbing a line for once & saying you like Survivor or Montrose or Ronnie James Dio. It'll break the monotony of the CORRECT answer to every question... you do realize you're posting on a topic that has no such thing as a correct answer, don't you?

Posted by Erin on Monday, 03.23.09 @ 03:18am

I mean, WILL BE considered ELIGIBLE.

Posted by Erin on Monday, 03.23.09 @ 03:26am

Nothing very interesting is going on. To get into the Hall of Fame, you first need to pass several stadia: eligible - considered - nominated - inducted. Becoming eligible is the easiest one. There's only one criteria: artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first record. Which off course means that every recording artist eventually will become eligible. It's not an honor or anything. In the other stadia it will (or at least, should) be determined which of these artists had a significant impact on the history of rock 'n' roll.

The Backstreet Boys will become eligible, that is inevitable. If they could pass the other stadia, is up for discussion. I personally think they stood in the spotlight long enough to get considered, but lack recognition and critical acclaim to be nominated.

if they must induct a boy band into the HOF, then it would probably be New Kids on the Block. after all, THEY kickstarted the movement, not Backstreet Boys.

I don't think anyone can disagree that boy bands were quite popular in the 90s, as much as i hate to admit it. however, i don't think it was enough to get in. Grunge was quite popular in the 90s as well. the difference? we still see influence of the grunge movement to this day.

Backstreet Boys? This a joke?

Posted by The Drummer on Saturday, 10.24.09 @ 09:12am

I think that the Backstreet Boys need be shown some credit because of all the records and history they have made, including their talent. If it is by them getting in the HoF then let it be. I seriously think that its quite childish how people just shoot down artist, music genre without understanding the history and talent behind it. It is sad that because of the numerous non talent 'vocal groups or boy bands' give the other talent filled groups a bad name. I wouldn't say that New Kids on the Block kickstarted the movement, I would like to see New Edition and BoysIIMen should at least have the go ahead first before Backstreet should get a shot at it.
Yes, the concept of the Backstreet Boys did stem from someone else, but it is those five individuals (now four) that took the concept, getting control of what they were about and their talent that got the millions upon millions of fans all over the world. And were able to sell the amount of CDs and tickets that were and still do to this very day.
If they ever do get considered it will be by the records the broken, the talent they have and their longevity. 17 years as of now and counting.

Posted by She-She on Sunday, 11.22.09 @ 12:32pm

BSB will not be considered, so it's a moot point. And- once again- the HOF does not base induction on record sales (the group's commercial success has severely waned, anyhow- the major success lasted three albums).

Boyz II Men also don't have much of a chance, despite their huge commercial success.

Posted by JR on Sunday, 11.22.09 @ 12:49pm

Since this subject started,BSB has released yet another album (This Is Us ) Oct 2009 , they are currently on another world tour and in Nov 09 SOLD OUT The 02 Arena along with various other venues/ arenas in Europe , their worldwide tour is selling out as we speak.
Too be able to keep up this kind of ticket sales long after their *Sell by date* was supposed to have expired , is an amazing feat in itself.

The BSB have been very influential for many bands this day (one of them being the Jonas Brothers)

They ushered in the pop explosion of the 90's , without them ,Britney Spears , Nsync , Christina Aguilera , Pink, and countless other artists would not have been given a chance , BSB opened the gates for all the other groups / solo artists of their time , I think this counts as "influential "

I know the die hard "Rock" fans will never see what BSB has done for the music industry , but maybe other people will one day see what a HUGE influence they have been in the music industry.

Peace :-)

I voted yes. I'll be 21 in a couple months and I've loved the bsb since I was about 7 years old. I enjoy their music, they have good clean lyrics and they seem like really nice guys. They've been around for about 15 years and still going strong and have tons of fans around the world.

They didnt quit when Kevin left the group and they still sound amazing. I think that Nick can play the drums and when Kevin was in the group he knew how to play the piano. Anyways just because they sing and dance doesnt mean they shouldnt have a chance at being inducted.

They don't qualify to inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame until 2021, so if they keep doing what their doing and fans stay loyal to them. I believe they have a good of chance just like any rock band does.

I'll always love BSB!

Okay, so maybe they have some impact (though I'd say the Spice Girls were probably more responsible), but that only counts as influential if those artists have cited them as an inspiration. Have they? So, for now, some impact, little to no influence and no innovation. They couldn't even break the mold on the new album. I'll give them a chance to really change things but right now the answer is that they definitely don't deserve it. I'm going to help you lot out, though. As a Brit I'm going to give you some artists to check out, artists that are all more deserving for the Hall than the Boys. I'm going to come up with ten British artists for each category, and if I can't come up with ten I'll fill it out with American artists.
Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
-Deep Purple (way overdue)
-Judas Priest (practically started NWOBHM)
-Iron Maiden (leaders of NWOBHM)
-Thin Lizzy (helped put Ireland on the map)
-Motorhead
-Venom
-Alice Cooper (more deserving than any more Brits)
-Slayer (see Alice)
-Anthrax
-Rainbow

Prog/Space Rock (not that big a fan of this area)
-Moody Blues
-King Crimson
-YES
-Hawkwind
-Rush
I can't come up with any more

Punk/Proto-Punk
-MC5
-Gang of Four
-New York Dolls
-The Damned
-Bad Religion
-The Runaways (close enough)
-Black Flag
-Husker Du (haven't listened, just know)
-The Replacements (see HD)
-The Buzzcocks (see HD)

Glam
-T.Rex
-Slade
-Sweet
-Mott the Hoople
-KISS
-Roxy Music (see Husker Du)
-Suzi Quatro (see Husker Du)
-Motley Crue (close enough)
Can't come up with more

Post-Punk/Alternative/Indie/New Wave
-The Smiths
-The Cure
-Joy Division
-New Order
-Depeche Mode (see Husker Du)
-Gary Numan (see HD)
-Kraftwerk (see HD)
-Eurythmics
-INXS
-The Cars (not a fan, but still)

Rap/Hip-Hop:
-The Sugarhill Gang (see Husker Du)
-The Beastie Boys
-Afrika Bambatta (see HD)

The backstreet boys deserve the honor of the induction. I'm eighteen and in the army(military intel). They are part of a lineage that started with the jackson five and might be as talented as the forementioned group. They've influenced a whole generation of teen pop artist who actually tried to compete with them so i really don't think they would cite them as inspirations. Bsb brought new innovations to the music video they hold the world record for most expensive music video. And as far as staying power I want it that way is considered one of the best pop songs ever by even musical snobs such as rolling stones. They influenced my generation which is really just becoming active in music so we'll see in 2021 wat happens but there's no denying if you seperate all these prefabricated notions of "REAL" music(using a word you all like) you would realize these en are musical geniuses.

"They are part of a lineage that started with the jackson five and might be as talented as the forementioned group." Yes, the J5 were there first.

"They've influenced a whole generation of teen pop artist who actually tried to compete with them so i really don't think they would cite them as inspirations." Who? Who else besides NSYNC was competing with them? And I don't think NSYNC was influenced by BSB; rather, Lou Pearlman tried to catch lightning in a bottle a second time, and it worked.

"Bsb brought new innovations to the music video they hold the world record for most expensive music video." Didn't Guns 'n' Roses have the most expensive videos? If they did bring new innovations to the video, nobody's told me about it, and there's still no musical innovations.

"And as far as staying power I want it that way is considered one of the best pop songs ever by even musical snobs such as rolling stones." And by Blender.

"They influenced my generation which is really just becoming active in music so we'll see in 2021 wat happens but there's no denying if you seperate all these prefabricated notions of "REAL" music(using a word you all like) you would realize these en are musical geniuses." I don't think so, seeing as boy bands aren't really around at the moment. And no, I don't use the term "real music", nor do I call them "musical geniuses". In fact, I rarely use the term "musical genius" to describe people past the 1970's. Only select few.

Wow, looks like this site has four pages were the "fans" are totally unreasonably out of their minds...and those pages are: Steve Perry, Madonna, Insane Clown Posse, and Backstreet Boys!!

The Dennis DeYoung page also seems to have this (dis)honour, albeit to a much lesser extent and I don't know what's going on with the Coven page but it has the most comments out of any artist on here somehow....from the looks of it these are dark waters I don't even want to try to thread into but I can hardly understand why anybody would care so much about who first came up with the devil horns hand sign??

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Sunday, 05.23.10 @ 08:44am

Tahvo, what do any of your ocmments have to do with the Backstreet Boys, who clearly will not be considered for the HOF?

Anyhow, those other acts, I'll give you- but it;'s raher silly to say fans of the most important female artist of the last 30 years- Madonna- are "unreasonably out of their minds." LOL Granted, there are a few out there (like any act) who carry on a bit much (especially about commercial success, which alone has little to do with the HOF).

Not sure how old you are, but have you been under a rock the last 30 years (or however long you have been with us), or are unaware of what she has done in her work to warrant the acclaim and reverence that she has had? Theres plenty of analysis, commentary and discussion out there on the matter (if her template-setting music isn't enough to convince you), so let me know if I can help out on that matter. :-) And it is rather silly still to debate about an artist who got in on her first year of eligibility and indeed HAS racked up a decent amount of acclaim for her work.

In the meantime, a big no to Backstreet Boys.

"Tahvo, what do any of your ocmments have to do with the Backstreet Boys, who clearly will not be considered for the HOF?" - JBR

Not much actually, just a comment on what kind of fans they have (for the record, I was voting no to the Backstreet Boys in case you thought otherwise)

In regards to Madonna, you'll notice I didn't say a word as to whether she deserved her induction or not, don't know where you got that idea from, I was just commenting that some of the posts on her page eerily reminded me of some of the posts on the BSB site....

Have yourself a good day JBR and apologies for any sort of misunderstanding on my behalf that developed

Posted by Tahvo Parvianen on Sunday, 05.23.10 @ 09:20am

I'd say Madonna did deserve her induction for her massive impact on female artists and pop culture, but not before a bunch of other artists not yet in (we can discuss specifics if you like.) But yes, some of the stuff on that page was very disturbing. Comparing her to the Beatles, calling her "punk"... I'd go there myself and dredge up some comments, but I've already been through it once. It's 1235 comments and I'm not going through it again. JBR can look for himself if he wants.

Anyhow, maybe to the Backstreet Boys by the time they're eligible, no right now.

"U just gotta listen to their last album called 'Unbreakable'"

It happens I did, out of curiosity. I listened to to it online. Chock full of wimpy pop ballads, and I'm not sure if I got through the whole thing. It debuted at #9 but then slid out of sight from there, lasting only six weeks on the charts. Why I did that when I could've checked out the Alice in Chains album instead I don't know. Fortunately someone got it for my last birthday, and I wasn't dissapointed. It seems the public agreed with me for the most part.

I'm actually going to backpedal on this one a bit. Paving the way for a whole new teen idol explosion doesn't count as influential as teen idols always have been around and always will be, but I suppose you could file that away under the "Perpetuation" bit. The problem, as Philip said somewhere else, is that the teen idol market is a narrow slice of the pop world, and is pretty much designed to be disposable*. That doesn't mean these acts don't mean anything to their fans, just that they don't mean anything to music or culture.

*Disposability isn't always a bad thing; Marc Bolan designed his music to BE disposable and trashy. The difference is that quite a bit of it has held up well, and that many musicians picked up on what he was doing.

"But also by other teen idols /artists namely T.Rex , Sweet,Slade,Elton John ,Queen,Mud,Shawadi wadi The BeeGees and a dozen other popular groups/artists of the time."

Uh... hang on. Queen, T. Rex, Elton, Slade and Sweet are now considered teen idols? I'm worried now. The closest any of those come to being teen idols are the Sweet, who always played their own instruments but had their original hits written for them by Chinn and Chapman. They eventually had their own hits though.

Out of curiosity I checked, and these guys actually have 12 Top 40 hits, not 13. An impressive number still, but... compared to other Top 40 hits numbers in the US:

-Bon Jovi: 17
-Chicago: They equalled the Backstreets with 12 from 1969-73 alone, 22 in their first 10 years, and 33 overall!
-Mariah Carey: 18 #1's alone, 27 top 10's, and 30 overall. 4 more in guest appearances.
-Def Leppard: 15
-Phil Collins: 21
-Britney Spears: 20
-Whitney Houston: 20

That's just scraping the surface, and without including the all-time greats. I'm not saying all of the names I've listed belong (some don't), but all of them except for Britney are eligible, and none have been inducted yet. I think one needs to keep in mind that more than just popularity is required to get in.

Sorry, Mariah's not eligible either. My bad.

@Sam: Elton and T Rex were considered teen idols back in the 70'. Big difference is, they were great influential musiciains unlike most others.

Influence: Backstreet Boys definetly had an influence on boybands. I'd say that's a 20%, as Boybands are just a part of pop and not as big as thye used to be. 20%
Innovation: Nsync had already done what they did, so did Wham. No 0%
Critical Respect: Nope. 0%
Commercial Sucess: Backstreet Boys are amongst the most sucessful acts of all time. 20%

40%, not induction worthy but should atleast be considered from an objective view.

add another 10% onto commercial sucess. 50%.

The Backstreet Boys are the reason I (and many other people I know who are my age) are fans of certain other groups...including The Beatles.

I grew up in the 90's, other than having an awkward conversation with my parents about what they listened to when they were my age, it would have been very difficult for me to discover those groups.

I'm a huge fan of the Beatles, and that would not have happened if I didn't listen to BSB. The first Beatles song I ever heard was "Because" and then it snowballed from there, I was able to discover the music on youtube and such.

A group that can do such timeless music that it allows people too young to know the music of yesteryear to discover it is a pretty big feat and deserving of some recognition.

The Backstreet boys are timeless. I can (and do) listen to their songs from 1996 and I enjoy them now just as much as I did then, and that's not just because of nostalgia - the songs and the style in which they are performed holds up and will hold up until 2021, when hopefully BSB are inducted. They certainly deserve it.

Posted by Garryh on Monday, 06.25.12 @ 23:22pm

Hell ten years from now bieber fans gaga fans will be saying how good the music was when they were younger and how the music there kids like sounds like crap none of my nieces who are younger than 15 know are like the bsb or any of there songs and people that are younger than 17 are only fans cause there parents played bsb songs so much esp if it was while they were still in the womb

Posted by Garryh on Monday, 06.25.12 @ 23:33pm

Are gonna like the songs cause it's all they really know hell south park even had an episode called tween wave which the parents were saying how the music there kids listen to sounds like shit which has been happening 1940 or probley since the 1900s

Posted by Garryh on Monday, 06.25.12 @ 23:42pm

They have influenced many modern boy bands.

Examples:
Jonas Brothers
One Direction
*NSYNC

So they are influential. But not innovative

Lou Pearlman dies!

Posted by Roy on Sunday, 08.21.16 @ 12:11pm

If Madonna, Abba etc got in, then so should backstreet boys, best selling and most influential boy band ever, Idc what you "rockers" think, I'm a rock lover myself (my favorite band is the velvet underground) and I love the backstreet boys, you can like all genres!
