Future Rock Legends predicts the 2017
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has probably enjoyed the relatively quiet "off-season" this year in contrast to last summer's Nominating Committee upheaval, followed by the Steve Miller truth bombs at the 2016 ceremony. The 2017 ballot will be a brand new opportunity for controversy. Let's go!

The Rock Hall will announce the nominees on October 18th.

Future Rock Legends predicts the following fifteen eligible artists will be on the 2017 ballot:

Artists who have recently been nominated...

  • Nine Inch Nails - Nominated in each of the last two years since they have been eligible, it looks like the Nominating Committee will keep trying until they get inducted.

  • Chic - Hopefully there will be a book written someday chronicling Chic's struggles to be inducted into the Rock Hall. It's inexplicable and unprecedented. This would be their eleventh nomination.

  • Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk and Yes have been nominated in alternate years since 2013. Odd years have been going to Kraftwerk.

  • The Marvelettes - The Marvelettes seem to be on the same tick tock pattern with Kraftwerk. Let's see if it continues this year.

  • The Smiths - The Smiths were nominated in 2015 and 2016 and continue to be one of the biggest 80s snubs.

  • Janet Jackson - The #InductJanet social media campaign finally got the attention of the Rock Hall last year when Janet was nominated for the first time. The pressure will stay on them on until she gets inducted.

  • The Spinners - When the Nominating Committee contracted last year, the person responsible for advocating for the Spinners clearly didn't get canned, since they returned to the ballot for 2016. The smaller committee now provides more power for individual voices, so this ballot should be consistent with the thinking of last year's.

Now for artists predicted to make the ballot for the first time...
  • Pearl Jam - They will join the exclusive First Ballot Hall of Famers club. The big question for the Rock Hall is which of Pearl Jam's drummers will be inducted?

  • PJ Harvey - Although a less famous PJ than Pearl Jam, Harvey is no less deserving of nomination in her first eligible year. She is simply one of the greatest artists of the last 25 years.

  • 2Pac - Speaking of true artists, Tupac Shakur becomes eligible for the first time this year. The Nominating Committee still has enough hip hop experts to make 2Pac's appearance on the ballot a sure-thing.

  • Rage Against the Machine - UPDATE: On October 6th, the Rock Hall confirmed that Rage Against the Machine is NOT eligible this year. Rage Against the Machine released their first demo in 1991, making them newly eligible for the Rock Hall this year. Back then, Tom Morello probably never would have guessed that in 25 years he would be in a position to select artists who get inducted in the Hall of Fame as an influential member of the Nominating Committee, but here we are.

  • Jane's Addiction - UPDATE: With Rage deemed ineligible this year, Jane's Addiction takes this slot in our predictions.

  • Judas Priest - Speaking of Tom Morello, one of the traits that makes him such a valuable Nominating Committee member is that he brings a voice and perspective to the meetings that had previously been lacking. Look for Morello to keep pushing for hard rock and metal to be represented on the ballot. Eddie Trunk and Morello are buddies, and Trunk has been vocal about Judas Priest being next in line over Iron Maiden.

  • Devo - These new wave pioneers are long overdue for a nomination. The Rock Hall would love to have more Ohio artists represented in their museum.

  • Tommy James & the Shondells - Some artists who have been eligible for 25 years finally get their time in the sun. James performed "Crimson and Clover" with Joan Jett on stage at the 2015 Rock Hall induction ceremony.

  • The Moody Blues - In recent years, the Rock Hall has nominated popular artists who had previously thought to have been blackballed by the committee (Rush, KISS, Deep Purple, Chicago). There are plenty more names on that list (The Monkees, Journey, Warren Zevon, Bad Company), but this year they might cater to one of the longest suffering fan bases out there. Stranger things have happened.

[Predictions posted September 9, 2016]

Artists are eligible for the Rock Hall 25 years after releasing their first record (anyone with a record released up through 1991). Future Rock Legends lists eligible artists by first year of eligiblity or alphabetically.

It's been a long time since I posted on this site, but I still keep track on Rock Hall news. So here are my predictions:

1. 2pac - He's probably, if not, the most influential and most innovative act who is newly eligiable this year. Rolling Stone put him on their Immortals list and they won't ignore him.

2. The Monkees - Rolling Stone gave their latest album good reviews and an article about them this year. It seems that NomCom are ready for them this year.

3. Pearl Jam - One of the most memorable bands during the grunge era and Eddie Vedder is a friend of the Hall. They won't ignore them.

4. Chic - The NomCom won't stop nominating them until they are, rightfully, inducted.

5. Janet Jackson - Thought she would be a shoo-in for induction, but if the Hall wants a woman inductee, she's the one.

6. Nine Inch Nails - Trent Reznor is still the hottest thing around and the Hall won't stop nominating until they're in.

7. The Smiths - Thought they wouldn't be back last year, but sadly they won't be inducted this year with Pearl Jam on the ballot.

8. War - I noticed that War is always nominated whenever the Hall have their ceremonies in Cleveland. Since they are going back to Cleveland next year, the NomCom might nominate them again.

9. Yes - With Deep Purple inducted, Yes now has a chance to be inducted (unless the NomCom might pick the Moody Blues instead).

10. Kraftwerk - EDM is still one of most popular genres this year and what better way for the Hall to represent EDM is Kraftwerk.

11. Electric Light Orchestra - Thought they would be nominated last year, but let's hope they will be in.

12. Harry Nilsson - If the fan campaign worked for Janet Jackson, it might worked for Harry Nilsson. Plus he fits the singer/songwriter slot.

13. Nina Simone - Her Netflix documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone?, was well recieved and was nominated for an Academy Award this year so it might help her get nominated.

14. Motörhead - If the NomCom wants a fan favorite on the ballot this year, then Motörhead is a good fit for them.

15. Link Wray - a guitar hero slot, and good thing for the NomCom have a 50's act again on the ballot.

I tried coming up with a ballot that addressed the lack of diversity, as well as had some of my personal choices. This is what I came up with:

The B-52s
Pat Benatar
The Cars
The Cure
Eurythmics
Janet Jackson
Motorhead
Harry Nilsson
Pearl Jam
The Replacements
Tupac Shakur
Nina Simone
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Link Wray

Other than Pearl Jam, the ballot seems to be completely wide open this year. October can't come soon enough!

I will write about my choices in greater detail on the Northumbrian Countdown, but for now, I suspect that my list will look like this. 2 first-time-eligibles, 8 returning nominees, 5 snubs.

1. Pearl Jam: maybe the surest first-year nominee since Nirvana

2. 2Pac: Rolling Stone loves him and Alan Light wrote the book on him

3. Nine Inch Nails: it seems like they may get nominated every year until they get in

4. Chic: it's usually a freebie

5. The Cars: a surprise nominee last year that generated lots of positive buzz but couldn't win on a classic rock-heavy ballot

6. The Zombies: they really want this, and their Odessey and Oracle lineup will show up if inducted

7. The Cure: perhaps the Smiths are more deserving, but The Cure is on tour getting rave reviews

8. The Meters: just a guess

9. Carole King: between the Kennedy Center Awards, a bio-musical, and the DNC, she's been visible, and she deserves it as an artist in her own right

10. Kraftwerk: Yes and Kraftwerk have never been nominated the same year, and it's Kraftwerk's turn

11. Nina Simone: Between the Netflix film, the biopic, a tribute album, and a cameo of one of her LP's in Beyonce's "Formation", the time is ripe.

12. Willie Nelson: Greg Harris seems to want him in, and he's right: few have done more over 50+ years to blur the lines of country and rock.

13. Judas Priest: My theory is that Tom Morello will beg the Nom Com not to nominate a technically-eligible RATM, and will instead lobby for the next metal group in a long queue.

14. A Tribe Called Quest: after successfully ushering Hall and Oates, Bill Withers, and NWA into the Hall, this may be Questlove's next project.

15. The Shangri-La's: another hunch. It's arguable that no other girl group has been so influential on 21st century artists.

I wish I had a handful of other predictions to list. I thought about Warren Zevon, a sensible singer-songwriter pick respected by Paul Shaffer. Eurythmics would be a great choice, but I went with Cars as the new-wave pick, just because they have been nominated before. There's no pure blues act on my list, although I considered J. Geils and Johnny Winter. It's possible Morello will lobby for MC5 instead of Judas Priest.

Janet Jackson should be nominated, but she might very well be giving birth around the time around April, which raises concerns that the induction ceremony ordinarily doesn't have to deal with. It's not fair to Janet- she deserves to be in- but the Rock Hall may opt to induct her at a time when she's better able to perform.

As has been stated before, I think the Rock Hall needs to s*** or get off the pot with regards to Chic. Either induct them, or quit nominating them. It does nothing but embarrass the artist and take up a spot for someone else.

Augh. Between moving, having my computer in the shop, breaking up with my fiance, my mom's overnight stay in the hospital, and the sheer comedy-if-it-weren't-such-abject-horror that is this election cycle, I've given very little thought to who might appear on the ballot this October. I've got a couple thoughts so far, but right now, my mind is far afield. I find myself singing tunes from Futurama just to keep me from getting too depressed, and I've recently discovered that I'm more into Adult-Alternative than I thought. Right now, listening to the Sam Roberts' Band "If You Want It" for the fourth or fifth time in a row because the damn chorus is so catchy. That and Serena Ryder's brilliantly written "Got Your Number." I can hear the soft distant chants of fellow members on this forum chanting "One of us! One of us!"

Like I said, mind is far afield. Still banking on Pearl Jam and 2Pac though.

RICK

Pretty strong list. Hope that things work out for an ELO nomination for you. My guess Pearl Jam would be the lock. The next 4 or 5 would be tough to predict.

ALEX

My guess Willie Nelson will receive one of those special Lifetime Achievement Awards or something that guarantees an Induction. He's in his 80's. I decided to go with Gram/Emmylou for country. Dick Dale and Gordon Lightfoot in late 70's. I'd like to see them inducted in some form but it will be another stacked ballot 2016. I think Nilsson and Zevon cancel each other out. Don't see 2 rap acts. Your Chic, The Cars, The Cure, NIN, Judas Priest picks on the mark. I see another commercial and popularity pick ballot. Tupac dead 20 years now. Makes more sense to nominate an LLCoolJ who if inducted can perform and rock the house. KING

As a featured subject in an upcoming documentary and a biography that are both due in early 2017, I hope it's finally Link Wray's year.

Maybe this year the Rock Hall will play "catch up" with the (too) many artists that have been waiting years....DECADES to have their turn - Johnny Burnette and the Rock & Roll Trio, Dick Dale, Moody Blues, Zombies, Monkees etc etc etc....

These are brilliant lists so far.

"Janet note" - I agree with Alex; she deserves it and will get it, but more likely when she's able to tear the place down performing.

My guesses:

1. Pearl Jam
2. Chic

now that that's out of the way:

3. The Monkees - Seems to be their moment, but if it doesn't happen now it might be a long time if ever.

4. Journey - The Hall's pulled a couple of these populist surprises in recent years, so why not? Greg Harris mentioned them too.

5. Motorhead/Priest/Maiden - Woefully underrepresented genre; legit claims by all three.

6. Yes/Moody Blues/ELO - Feels like a toss-up with at least one and maybe two on the ballot. Something has to give with this genre.

7. The Cars - Admittedly a pet of mine, but from an underrepresented era and one I think the NomCom will pursue for a bit--they just faced a tough ballot last year.

8. The Spinners - One of those choices that eventually gets there

9. Carole King - She's having a well-deserved moment in a big way that could very well carry over here.

10. Marvelettes - Nominated before and likely will slip in there sometime. Could be the Shangri-Las instead.

11. Warren Zevon - Paul Shaffer will likely lobby for him now that Bert Berns is in.

12. Tina Turner - An icon in her own right and if Janet's nomination is not in the cards this year, it's a good time for the discussion.

13. The Smiths/The Cure - Just guessing.

14. 2Pac - First-year-eligible icon but King may be right in reasoning that they'll want a performance, esp. in light of NWA not performing this year.

15. NIN - Agreed; the Hall will pursue this.

Also strong possibilities: Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics

Ok. Well I stayed away awhile. I said I would re emerge in the late Summer. Ok it's a little sooner. Here are my predictions for the nominees of the 2017 Rock Hall of Fame.

2PAc
Chic
The Cure
J. Geils Band
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Motorhead
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Todd Rundgren
The Spinners
Tina Turner
The Zombies

This list reflects diversity. I changed some in the last couple months. I feel strongly about the Moody Blues as always. I also feel that R&B performers like Tina Turner may get a shot this time. I have 2 Metal acts on the list. I mean Eddie Trunk is on the committee it seems. So it makes sense to have that. As a way to catch up I do go back with the Zombies, a great 60s act.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 08/11/2016 @ 14:01pm

I've scanned through a lot of great predictions, many well deserving. But my top two are The Moody Blues (Is it #1 albums in 3 different decades?) and Randy Bachman (These Eyes, No Time, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet and a dozens more great songs from the 60's and 70's. The Guess Who and BTO are iconic) Randy Bachman should go unnoticed no longer, people. Committee voters, do what needs to be done. The guy wrote These Eyes in high school and continued to pen charters for over a decade after that.

Right on target, Ed. I'm tired of seeing The Guess Who constantly ignored by nearly all the prognosticators around here.

Thanks Paul. I wrote a blog entry on my personal blog (the one other than Rock Hall Monitors) to try and purge some of the anxiety and stress, but the fret from this political season is not going away anytime soon (even worse for me, a postal worker, as we'll be getting all the political mail to deliver soon! lol!), and the strain isn't going away anytime soon. Just trying to slog through it. 2016 can go away now, kthxbye.

Love these Nomination lists FRL regulars. Good to see some Girl Power with Michelle. Strong lists Gregs and Ben. A few quick techniques I use to see if an artist or group stacks up...
1. Eraser Test-Take a music name and then erase it. I'll use Stevie Nicks as an example. Stevie Nicks has a long 45+ year career. With her excellent work with Fleetwood Mac & solo, you can't just erase her out of history. Influential for musicians especially for Female musicians. She passes the test.
2. Inclusion Test. Take an artist or group and place their name with some of the music legends. Let's use Stevie Nicks again. A potential RRHOF should blend in with past inductees. EX:The Who, Chicago, David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, REM, Led Zeppelin, Prince, U2 Stevie Wonder. Stevie Nicks blends in here and you would not think twice about it. Stevie Nicks passes Inclusion Test too. RRHOF worthy no question. Let's look at 2 possible borderline or below the line candidates. Survivor and Better Than Ezra. Survivor had two incredible hits from Rocky Soundtrack. Eye Of The Tiger & Burning Heart as well as some nice hits High On You and The Search Is Over etc. Probably you could erase them out though. The staying power and influence has waned. Better Than Ezra made 2 strong early albums with Deluxe and Friction, Baby. I like their sound but I can't think of their other albums. You probably could erase them out but if they keep making good music... Maybe in another decade they will be re-visited. FRL regulars, what tests do you use to determine a groups credentials for HOF? King,

I like your list. We have a bunch of the same. As far as the Inclusion test. I think most of the names I have could blend in with Whom Chicago and others. Certainly the Moody Blues for sure. A very key act in the Late 60s and the 70s. They do have a 50 year career at this poimt. Besides them I think ones like the J. Geils Band and Todd Rundgren do. Some may not think so but they have long careers. Ones who have knowledge of them will know they made their mark. They tecnically only had a few hits but they had many albums and were widely known. Todd was key as a solo act and a producer.

Slight misprint. I of course meant to say most of the names could blend in with the Who Chicago and others. I needed to correct the misprint on my favorite band.

Hello to all!

In a month's time, we will be presented with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee's ballot for finalists for the Class of 2017. Last year, while I and others were impressed with the impressive credentials of many of the nominees, it did appear the Nom Com were favoring classic rock and not the 1990's, R&B and Art Rock. Those genres and styles will, I think, be more prevalent for this coming election. Now, who do I think will be nominated in September or October? I assume there will be 16 nominees, and quite a few will be returning nominees. Though I expect a few important first time nominees this month.

Tupac Shakur: A virtual lock, and our only regret is Tupac is not alive to see the induction he so richly deserved while alive.

Pearl Jam: They are going in with no questions asked.

Janet Jackson: A certainty for induction this time out. The RRHOF will not make the same mistake twice.

Chic: We know Chic will be nominated again. At some point, an induction will need to occur, and I believe the long wait will be over this December.

Yes: Perhaps with Chris Squire's death last year, the thought of a Yes induction was too soon. Enough time has passed to consider Yes on their merits and influence, and I think Yes will go in.

The Smashing Pumpkins: This might depend on whether Billy Corgan shows up and/or if Corgan can willingly be in the same room with James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky for the first time in some 17 years. I am hoping for a reunion yet I know the chances for that happening are effectively none.

Nine Inch Nails: It might prove a bit difficult, yet I see NIN getting inducted within two or three years' time.

The Cars: a nomination is coming, yet an induction might be waiting.

Mariah Carey: I think Mariah has a great chance of getting a nomination, and perhaps even an induction outright. She should not need to wait any longer than now.

Motorhead: The passing of Lemmy and Phil Taylor last year is still fresh on everyone's mind. I expect a nomination, though an induction might not come this year.

Blur: It might be rather unexpected, yet I think Blur is on the cusp of getting nominated; at least as a representation of Brit-Pop.

LL Cool J: He will get another nomination, and a better than average chance at finally getting inducted. The controversies from three years ago have died down and matter little these days.

Bob Mould and/or Husker Du: Completely left field, yet in recognition of Mould's recent records that are among his best in years; I think one of the most influential and unheralded artists/bands of the past 40 years will get a nomination that is well deserved.

The Moody Blues: A fair educated guess that I hope becomes realized. Their snubbing has gone on long enough.

Eurythmics: At some point, the Eurythmics will be nominated, and many will wonder why this was not done any earlier. This year might be their best shot at getting the recognition they deserve.

Electric Light Orchestra: I am convinced if ELO ever get nominated, they will be immediately inducted without question. It appears that it is becoming hip and cool and trendy to be a fan of Electric Light Orchestra. To which I say; welcome and what took you so long. An induction would go a long way towards making ELO on an even field with their influences and hose whom they gave inspiration to.

So, that is who I think will be nominated this year once the Nom Com meets in September. I think, and more importantly I hope, the number of inductes will increase. 7 inductees, which is what is required for Performers in our Revisited/Projected Rock Hall Project, seems reasonable. Should it go to 7, I think Tupac Shakur, Pearl Jam, Janet Jackson, The Smashing Pumpkins, Yes and Chic are certain to go in. My seventh pick is a bit hard to decipher, though again if ELO are on the ballot, they will get inducted. If not, I think Mariah Carey has an inside track for induction. Let me know what you think of these predictions if you want. Perhaps you might agree or disagree, yet I feel we have the makings of a better induction class for next year with these nominees to choose from.

It would be poetic justice for Chic to sing "F*** Off" instead of "Freak Out" next year,

Lax33

Impressive List Lax33

I like the Mariah Carey and Moody Blues picks. Have LL Cool J in my selections as well. Getting closer to 50 now. He should get in this time. You're right on Chic and Yes and some of the other recycled nominees. That heavy metal slot will be tough to predict. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Motorhead could take the spot. Bon Jovi too if you consider them metal.

Was listening to some Greatest Hits of Bryan Adams, Journey, Kool & The Gang, The Cars, The Guess Who, and some other borderline candidates. The Bryan Adams and The Guess Who ones stood out.

I agree with you Lax that you will see similar classic rock and R&B type acts again. Looks like RRHOF going to nominate a more commercial successful and popular type of group. They need to fill those ceremony venues and continue the buzz. Wonder if the RRHOF listened to some of Steve Miller's changes and recommendations.

Interesting if the Dead vs. Alive artist situation has been studied. The recent inductees had many group members still alive which is cool when they accept the awards. They tell some stories how they got together and thanking their families etc. I think Lax you could hit 10 of your nominees. KING

For several years, the "Beyond The Music: Remastered" episode featuring Duran Duran had aired at increasing regularity. Last year, John Taylor had admitted that Duran Duran has always had a progressive side to their music. In my honest opinion, Duran Duran have continued to become ever better over the past several decades. Duran Duran's live recordings have been quite appealing as well. "Paper Gods," " A Diamond In The Mind" and "All You Need Is Now" have been critically praised. I have every reason to believe that Duran Duran will finally be nominated and inducted into the Rock &
Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017.

2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the birth of progressive rock. There are four progressive rock acts on my list, for a change, all four will be inducted.

The Moody Blues
Yes
Electric Light Orchestra
Duran Duran

There are three prog adjacent artists on my list:

Sade
Carly Simon
Foreigner

There is one bonafide Rock & Roll Band on my list:

Doobie Brothers

The Moody Blues- long overdue, a major influence upon artists who have been previously inducted.

Yes- innovative, influential and long lived. This time, the voters should vote them into the hall.

Electric Light Orchestra- combining Rock and roll with an orchestra, they had created a majestic atmospheric sound which had created several major hit singles during the 1070's and 1980's. Their body of work is noteworthy, especially "Eldorado." Their groups' leader, Jeff Lynne is also a multi- instrumentalist.

Duran Duran- had elevated the sound of influences such as the late David Bowie and Roxy Music to the nth level. They are hugely influential, innovative and long lived. By combining prog rock with dance music, they had created their own unique sound.

There are three prog adjacent artists on my list:

Sade-
Carly Simon

Foreigner

There is one bonafide Rock & Roll Band on my list:

Doobie Brothers

I posted my predictions and/or biggest snubs earlier. (See The Moody Blues and Randy Bachman). I must admit I do not know very much about the music industry and realize objectivity clashes with subjectivity in a situation like this. Reading an article on-line from the Orlando Weekly (www.rockhall.com/inductees/induction-process) enlightened me to the nomination and induction voting process. Before reading that article, I scrolled through the list of the 310 members of the Rock Hall. Not naming names, there were, of course, a few musicians or bands who I felt did not belong as well as many noticeable absences. Once you're in, you're in, so let's look at what could be done to get those missing and considered worthy of induction by so many to indeed get inducted. My simple solution is, since we are all not getting any younger, to make the whole thing a bi-annual process. There can be a ceremony every six months and HBO can televise the main event and concert twice a year. I know I'd watch it. One more thing I'd like to add: to the producers of the concert: do not do voice overdubs during the live music at the concert since you take the liberty to edit it. Better yet, make it a live broadcast! Thanks to all who took the time to read this, whether you agree or disagree. this is just an idea to kick around. But the bottom line is there are too many Hall worthy classic rock bands, musicians or singers out there who would be truly honored by an induction! And, lastly, contact the act. If they don't want in, for whatever reason or reasons, then don't vote them in. When an acceptance speech is filled with heartfelt emotion with gratitude or appreciation, as so many have been, it shows what this means to the entertainer(s), and to their fans as well. And thanks, Ringo, for the story about the Beatles stinking up the car in the early days! Never too much information when it comes to the Beatles!

Sorry everyone it has taken me so long to post my 2017 Rock Hall predictions. Right now, I’m working 2 jobs, in the process of moving, preparing for an upcoming conference, and other family obligations and events. I’ve been active on the various project(s) on this site, but not much else. Nevertheless, here are my predictions for the 2017 ballot:

1. 2Pac (1st Ballot, Hip-Hop)
2. Bad Company (Steven Van Zandt Choice, Classic Rock)
3. The Cars (New Wave/Classic Rock)
4. Chic (Disco, Token Pick)
5. The Cure (‘80s British Alternative)
6. The J. Geils Band (Steven Van Zandt Choice, Blues-Rock/Classic Rock)
7. Judas Priest (Tom Morello Choice, Heavy Metal)
8. Janet Jackson (Female Artist, Pop/R&B/Soul)
9. Kate Bush (Female Artist, Singer-Songwriter)
10. Nine Inch Nails (Industrial, ‘90s Rock)
11. Pearl Jam (1st Ballot, Grunge)
12. The Spinners (‘70s R&B/Soul)
13. War (Questlove Choice, ‘70’s Funk)
14. Warren Zevon (Paul Shaffer, Singer-Songwriter)
15. Yes (Progressive Rock/Classic Rock)

Other artists that I considered – A Tribe Called Quest, Big Star, Bon Jovi, Chaka Khan, Devo, Electric Light Orchestra, Eurythmics, Foreigner, Gram Parsons, Kraftwerk, LL Cool J, Los Lobos, MC5, Mariah Carey, The Marvelettes, The Moody Blues, The Replacements, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Tommy James and the Shondells, Whitney Houston, and The Zombies. It’s not that I think the 15 acts I chose are more important (or even better) than these “Considered” artists, I just like the ones I chose above have a better chance of appearing on the 2017 ballot.

I’m hoping there are more women on this year’s ballot. It would be great to see at least 3 of the 15 nominees be female singers/groups/bands. This would help efforts to get the likes of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, Annie Lennox, Marvelettes and others appearing on the ballot (some yet again). I wonder if the Nominating Committee will deal with the Rock Hall’s problem of nominating and inducting women, there were none inducted earlier this year. It seems iffy if Janet Jackson will be nominated again this year or the Committee will want to wait another year when he recovers from her pregnancy. If that’s the case, I don’t know which way the Committee will go with the female singers/groups for the 2017 ballot.

Something that we all must remember is that the ceremony will take place in NYC again this year. Pearl Jam will definitely be a shoe-in first-ballot inducted band and more importantly the headliners for the upcoming ceremony. The other 4 (or hopefully 5) inductees could potentially in the shadows of Pearl Jam (since the Rock Hall might think the show will be an easy sell-out). In that case, this year might be one for personal pet projects for some of the more established members of the Nominating Committee. That’s why I think the likes of Bad Company, J. Geils Band, Judas Priest, War, and Warren Zevon will be nominated this year. Everything else besides 2Pac, Pearl Jam and Chic is all up in the air and widely speculative until the nominations are revealed next month.

I’m desperately hoping there are more than 5 inductees in the performer category for the 2017 ballot. By decreasing the number of inductees, even by 1 performer this year, it compromised the 2016 ceremony. With all the fallouts and drama occurring on-and-off stage this past year, the Rock Hall should learn from it’s mistake and go back to 6 performer inductees. If there was a sixth inductee for 2016, that would have possibly saved the ceremony from the utter chaos that erupted. I know some people like the Hall to be an exclusive club of sorts, but let’s honor those while their still alive and readily able to perform on the grand stage.

I'll come in again!

2pac
Carole King
Chic
The Cure
Electric Light Orchestra
The J. Geils Band
Judas Priest
Kool and the Gang
Los Lobos
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Rage Against the Machine
The Spinners
Suicide
Yes

Some first-ballot artists, some previous nominees, and a couple who were never nominated.

Suicide is my out-of-left-field pick. With Alan Vega's death, the ceremony being in Suicide's old stomping ground of New York, and Bruce Springsteen having given them a boost, I have a feeling the Hall may put them out there as both a memorial and also as a try at credibility. To that extent, while I agree with Voltaire that the Hall may not want to co-nominate Kraftwerk and Yes, me predicting Suicide means that, if Kraftwerk made the ballot, that's three acts with major electronic music input, and I doubt the Hall would be that open-minded yet. Ergo, Yes gets another shot at induction.

Posted by SotN on Tuesday, 08/16/2016 @ 20:20pm

Very interesting choices, SotN. Suicide could be a great sleeper pick. You have some artists I really wanted to make room for on my list, notably the Geils Band and ELO. My only critique is that after an all-male class, will the Nom Com throw down a list of nominees with only 1.5 female artists (King and the Chic singers)? It's possible- they seem to have limited the female nominees to pave an easier path for Ronstadt and Jett, for the classes of 2014 and 2015, respectively. But we'll see.

I just thought I would give some details to some of my predictions for the 2017 Nominees.

J. Geils Band- They are a good Blues/Rock choice. They have been nominated before. Steve VAn ZAnt loves them.

Janet Jackson- I am not a fan at all but I do think to be realistic the Hall will give them another shot.

Judas Priest- This would be a good Heavy Metal choice. Now that Deep Purple is in Eddie Trunk would probably push for them. I don't know if he is actually on the Nom committee. Tom Morello is and he would probably go for them too.

The Meters- They are a good R&B choice with their funky instrumental sound.

The Moody Blues- They as we know are long overdue. I predict them every year for a long time. They are a legendary band.

That is it for Now.

Soundgarden
The Cars
The Commodores
The Doobie Brothers
The Marvelettes

Rob,

It's pretty surprising isn't it? Then again, there are probably at least 50 artists that also beg the question "How is it even possible that ______ is not in already?"

Posted by Greg P. on Wednesday, 08/17/2016 @ 14:59pm

I would have chosen Pat Benatar but I am going with Janet Jackson and Tina Turner as female nominees this Year. This is similar to last year with Janet and Chaka Khan. They gave Chaka a shot so this year I thought maybe they will repeat Janet and go with Tina Turner.

Pat Benatar is an excellent choice though. I was a fan in her early years. Pat Benatar will come but maybe not just yet. Pat Benatar could have been in already but it took so long just to get Heart and Joan Jett in. Heart opened the way for woman in Rock with Ann and Nancy

ROY and Zuzu

With Chicago now inducted, I'm curious what 2 or 3 groups you will throw your support to next for induction.

I like my 20 early 2016 RRHOF nomination selections but trying to force Pat Benatar, Roxy Music, and The Guess Who onto the list somehow. Might make a few changes in early Sept. KING

Ok. Here some more details of my picks. I covered a diversity for this year. I try to do that each year.

Motorhead- Another Metal pick. I also picked Judas Priest. This pick is due to the death of Lemmy. I think they are more likely for induction. I'm not focusing on that now.

Nine Inch Nails-I think they will get nominated a few times. As some others said they may get inducted in 2 or 3 years.

Pearl Jam- Now this one is a given. Probably the most likely nominee and Inductee.Someone said they may be the surest first year nominee since Nirvana.

Todd Rundgren- He has had success as both a performer and Producer. One could consider him a Singer/songwriter.

The Spinners- Long overdue for being inducted I figure the Hall will give them another shot. They have been nomimated quite a bit. Excellent R&B nominee. They are a pretty good R&B pick. They had some great hits like Could it Be I'm Falling in Love and Rubberband Man.

Tina Turner- This would be the first time she is nominated solo. Although she goes back to the early 60s with Ike she stands out for her solo career that was strong in the 80s and 90s.

The Zombies- Steve Van Zant loves them. This would represent the 60s well. They were a key British Invasion band 1964-1968.

2PAc- The most likely Rap choice for this coming year. I never listened to him but at this point acts I don't know too well are eligible. He seems like a lock as a nominee.

So there are a bunch more details on my picks. Again there is diversity in my list.

There is also Chic. They will be nominated until they get in. The Hall may finally induct them.

The Cure- This is my 80s Alt choice for this year. They have been nominated before. Darin G. There you go. The Cure. 80s alt that I am at odds with for myself but are likely to be Nominated. I was going to also pick Sonic Youth as a 2nd 80s alt act but I think instead there will a little more push with Heavy Metal.

I picked 2 acts for Metal instead. Metal is a little more established in the Hall with those like Tom Morello and Eddie Trunk involved in the Hall a lot. That rounds out my list.

I may be in the minority here, but I am really hoping Smashing Pumpkins will get a nomination. Actually, I am hoping that they are inducted, but one step at a time. I know many of you can list several bands that you will say deserve it first, but Smashing Pumpkins were a big part of the soundtrack to my youth (I grew up in the 90s) and I think they absolutely deserve a nomination. I'm curious to hear where the rest of you stand on them.

Posted by Greg P. on Saturday, 08/20/2016 @ 19:51pm

01. Mary Wells
02. The Marvelettes
03. The Spinners
04. Joan Baez
05. Willie Nelson
06. Carole King
07. Dionne Warwick
08. Tina Turner
09. Gram Parsons
10. Harry Nilsson
11. Warren Zevon
12. The Monkees
13. Jan And Dean
14. The Moody Blues
15. Electric Light Orchestra
16. Yes
17. War
18. The Meters
19. Chic
20. Janet Jackson
21. Whitney Houston
22. Mariah Carey
23. The Smiths
24. Pearl Jam
25. Nine Inch Nails

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 08/20/2016 @ 20:20pm

Agree that Smashing Pumpkins deserve a nomination. Not sure it will be this year though. Seems like that spot (90's hard/alternative band) will be taken by Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails. After those 2 bands get in, I can see the committee putting Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden on the list. My personal favorite from the era, Live, probably will never make it.

Posted by Classic Rock on Saturday, 08/20/2016 @ 20:52pm

I was just saying to my fiancé recently that if Live had been around in any other period, they would be considered Hall of fame worthy. Unfortunately, they were always overshadowed by their peers.

I have enjoyed reading all the comments here and the wonderful lists of so many talented artists! I am a hard core Moody Blues fan and I have to add my opinion. I could write so much about this band however I will limit this comment to a short history of how IMPORTANT the Moodies actually influenced ONE of the bands mentioned: ELO
Denny Laine from Birmingham was an original member of the Moody Blues. Before this he was in a group called Denny Laine and the Diplomats. The drummer was Bev Bevan who had been in a group called the "Move". After Denny left the Moodies and before he joined with Paul,Linda and Wings (The Moodies toured with the Beatles for a short time) he had a group called "Electric String band" Later Bev and another member from the "Move" Roy Wood joined with Jeff Lynne to form ELO. I want everyone here to listen to El Dorado by ELO from 1974 almost ten years AFTER "Days of future Passed" was released and tell me that it in NOT POSSIBLE that the Moodies did not influence ELO.. Therefor the Moodies need to be inducted FIRST! This band influenced Rush,Yes and other groups as well. I also like The Guess Who and/or Jethro Tull for 2017. Thank you everyone for your support of the Moodies for 2017!

Okay, one more armchair prediction. Feel free to slam me once you've read it, everyone...

Chubby Checker: Even if he didn't write "The Twist" and related, he certainly popularized it. It would be nice to have him see his award.

Moody Blues: Arguably the biggest act from the Sixties that is not already in. Enough already.

Yes: The progressives are finally starting to be welcomed, as they should have been all along.

The Sugar Hill Gang: We have all heard that "rap is not rock". The R&R HoF has stated otherwise, at least four times (to my count). This is the group that, arguably, invented the genre; I say induct them and then we can all say that rap is sufficiently represented.

Joe Cocker: I was surprised that he wasn't nominated last year as the "recently deceased" candidate. A worthy addition.

Lesley Gore: Same reason as Joe Cocker, with an iconic song to boot.

Journey: As one of those above stated, the populist nominee. Arguably the most talented musicians of the "corporate 80s era" (including Foreigner, Loverboy. REO Speedwagon, Styx, etc.) Plus, wouldn't the possible reunion with Steve Perry bring in the ticket sales? (Even if Perry has stated publicly that he wouldn't do it.)

Janet Jackson: I was surprised that she didn't make the cut last year. Someone argued that she is the most musically talented of the Jacksons (and that's saying something); I think her time will come this year.

Carly Simon: If Linda Ronstadt made it, Carly Simon should--a better voice, and she wrote her own songs. Pat Benatar has been mentioned above, but I would say that Simon is more deserving.

Pearl Jam: This year's "first year of eligibility" nominee.

Chic: Because Jann Wenner wants them in. We all know they will be in eventually, right?

And my "sentimental favorite"--my choice less on merit than personal taste--Three Dog Night.

Posted by Joe on Sunday, 08/21/2016 @ 11:53am

Add one more to the above:

Ben E. King: Two iconic songs. This year's "double nominee". Deserving.

I'm so sorry Sue, but this system doesn't exactly work that way, take it from me I know full well, then also, no member of ELO has ever come out in an interview or otherwise to state they were influenced by The Moody Blues, it's just not there. 8-)

Posted by Rick Vendl II on Sunday, 08/21/2016 @ 12:31pm

Now that I've more carefully read the above, I want a few more!

The Runaways: I was really surprised that Joan Jett & the Blackhearts made it before them. The runaways arguably opened the door for the (forgive the somewhat derogatory term) "girl groups"; the Blackhearts had one iconic song (that Joan Jett didn't even write).

Tina Turner: I long thought that Stevie Nicks should and would be the first female double nominee; now that a few mentioned Tina's solo work, I've changed my mind. The only problem would be getting her to perform; I understand that she renounced her American citizenship and would probably be reluctant to return to the States for a performance.

Kraftwerk: Where would electronic music be without them?

The Zombies and Warren Zevon: Two more interesting acts that have been overlooked. Zevon may be a sentimental favorite, as many deceased acts are.

Link Wray: An overlooked guitar hero--quite possibly the very first.

Hello Rick,
Perhaps no members of ELO "Stated" in an interview that they were influenced by the Moodies. However see my post about the beginning of the band ELO. Bev Bevan was in a band with Denny Laine who was an original member of the Moodies and Bev joined Jeff,Roy and Trever Burton to form ELO. Denny had a band called The Electric String Band with BEV. I can connect the dots just by listening to "El Dorado"
Do not misunderstand I am a big fan of ELO but the Moodies were together almost a decade before them and dare I say they have paid their dues longer by an almost a 35 year RRHOF snubb. I would love to see the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull,Yes and ELO all inducted together! What a jam that would be...better than ABBA..LOL :)

Hi Sue,

First, both being members of the same band that was actually "Denny Laine and the Diplomats" does not mean anything, second Bev Bevan wasn't in "Electric String Band", third Denny Laine left just after Justin Hayward had replaced him before The Moodies even came up with "Days of Future Passed", The Moody Blues have been snubs for 27 years since 1990 and ELO, 20 years, 1997! 8-)

Someone mentioned that hopefully it is 6 Inductees this year. I too am desperately hoping there are more than 5 inductees in the Performer category. It was Nick who said it. Good point. The Rock Hall should go back to 6 Performer inductees. If there was a sixth inductee for 2016 that would have possibly have saved the ceremony from the chaos and also would have honored another inductee. I personally think either Yes or the Spinners just missed as a result. It is possible that either of those may have been inducted with he ones that went in. Yes may have just missed because of all the other Classic Rock like Deep Purple and Chicago. Perhaps that is why they cut it down to 5.

I am focusing on Nominees right Now. I do agree that Pearl Jam is a shoe in. I think acts like J Geils Band, Judas Priest, The Meters,Todd Rundgren, The Spinners and the Zombies will be nominated this year. I do of course think the Moody Blues will finally get a chance. Lets start with a nomination.

Posted by Ben on Monday, 08/22/2016 @ 09:08am

Quick question for everyone - Aren't the Rock Hall nominees usually announced in mid September? I've read multiple reports and articles claiming the nominations are announced in October.

Thanks Ben; I agree there should be at least 6 inductees in the performer category. The more I think about it thou, with the exception of bonafide first-ballot appearances of both Pearl Jam and 2Pac, I think the 2017 ballot will largely comprise of the Nominating Committee's personal pet projects and the usual suspects (nominees who have appeared on previous ballots).

Posted by Nick on Monday, 08/22/2016 @ 10:39am

Nick,

The nominees tend to be announce in October. So we will be speculating on predictions for awhile. I haven't read on it though.

I do agree there will be a bunch of personal pet projects and and repeat nominees. Certainly J Geils Band and the Zombies are 2 such pet projects Those are favs of Steve Van Zant. Now since did Yes did fail to be inducted a couple of times I think it may finally be time for the Moody Blues. Last year I predicted 3 prog acts. Given how the Nom committee really is I will only go with the Moodys in this genre.

I think Judas Priest is a pet project of Tom Morello as well as Eddie Trunk. I am not clear if Trunk is on the committee or not. The Meters and the Spinners seem to be nominees that come up a lot. So I think they both stand a good chance as nominees. Chic have been nominated over and over again for years. So they certainly extremely likely to be nominated.

So I have expanded on what you were saying. There will of course be some new entries. Moody Blues would be. So would Todd Rundgren.

When will the 2017 Nominees be announced? (probably early October)

Posted by FRL on Monday, 08/22/2016 @ 14:50pm

Here you go, my 15 prediction picks for Nominees:

First balloters:

PEARL JAM - I'm sure everyone will have the same ideas and reasons why for this one, so I'll just put this in my own words: Pearl Jam is simply an iconic 90s band. I grew up listening to their music, and to me their first three albums are classic. The critics agree, and so do the fans. They continued to make great music even though the grunge subgenre faded and they rock on to the present day. They are for sure a shoo-in.

2PAC - Most of us know that 2Pac was the guy who had the most impact on gangsta-rap, and I guess he still does. For all I know, maybe he still releases albums(?). His death at the early age of 26 propelled him to iconic status. I didn't grow up listening to his music, but my classmates bought his albums. Each time his new CD (dead or alive) would drop, it was like an event. They paid attention to the lyrics, and treated his music like philosophy. I can sense that millions of young teens were the same way. Do I think he will get in right away? No. But I do think he will at least make the board.

Previously nominated:

JANET JACKSON - She really hasn't stood out that much in 2016, except for her touring and postponing dates. I would never think her and Pearl Jam would be headlining an induction ceremony together, but I've seen weirder things happen. Now that she's on the board, keep putting Janet on the list until its her time for induction.

THE SPINNERS - Did you know that the Spinners are still touring? For real. War is too, and they almost made my predictions ballot. But the Spinners...well, they're getting up there. I don't even know any original members that are still with them, or with us. And let's be honest, its actually getting annoying seeing the Spinners and War on the ballot. Just let 'em in.

THE ZOMBIES - I've come to realize the harsh reality that many 50's and 60's acts are becoming very scarce for Rock Hall consideration. And this is not about personal taste: I dig Herman's Hermits and the Turtles, but I don't think they're that RRHOF-worthy, or maybe Brook Benton. I hope it does happen sometime. Clearly the NomCom is making more way for 70's, 80's and now 90's acts. And that's not a problem at all, except for the situation where that band's influence from the 60's is not in the HOF. That's where there is trouble. I'd say the Zombies is the closest to any 60's group that will be inducted soon.

NINE INCH NAILS - I'm getting this feeling that Trent (and I guess, the backup crew) will be nominated continuously until induction. And I'm fine with that!

KRAFTWERK - Arguably in my opinion, the most important act not in the HOF as far as influence.

THE CARS - I am confident that the NomCom will give them another go.

MC5 - I'm just gonna go with everyone else's guess about this one. Maybe Tom Morello WILL try to get them in.

BON JOVI - It's a mystery to me that Bon Jovi has waited long enough to get in, even though they've only been nominated once. My image of Jon Bon Jovi is him jamming with several HOFers, and usually if there's a big event (like charity), he's usually there. I don't think him and his band will have any trouble getting in soon. Period. I've been waiting for him (or them) to get nominated and inducted the last 3 years. I'm positive that if Bon Jovi is on the ballot this year, they'll get in right away, regardless of their competition. Face it, they're seen as legends and icons. They still sell out arenas. Richie and Jon would definitely show up to the ceremony. On top of that, they would represent the hard-rock genre very well. They would be a great headliner, next to Pearl Jam. If I'm not mistaken, I think Bon Jovi may have performed with Eddie Vedder at some point. I say, get them out of the way please. And thank you.

Never before nominated:

DIONNE WARWICK - My thing about the divas is: before they put in Whitney or Mariah, why not put in the originals first? I broke this one down to either Cher or Dionne Warwick. Sure, Dionne probably would not be classified as a 'diva'. But hey, she was a hitmaker and a great singer who had a long run. And, she should get in before her cousin, Whitney. What would be extremely great would be if Dionne was inducted the same time as Hal David and Burt Bacharach. As far as I know, they helped build each other's careers. I can dream, can I?

ARTHUR BROWN - Brown may not be the "God of Hell Fire", but he's a totally left-field pick. I look at it as over the years sometimes an act that no one would think of would appear on a ballot. Last year it was Los Lobos and the JB's. For some reason, I had Arthur Brown on my mind on a recent day. Then I looked at his Wikipedia page, and it all came down to this: despite of Brown's status as a one-hit wonder, he still has a legacy. He was one of the first 'shock-rockers', and if Pete Townshend, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne had influence in the Nominating Committee, Brown would be right there on the ballot. Again, this one's just a random guess.

THE GUESS WHO - This is probably the second or third year in a row I've put them on my predictions list. Call them classic rock, Canadian rock, whatever. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs in 'Almost Famous': "The Doors? Jim Morrison? He's a drunken buffoon posing as a poet. Give me the Guess Who! They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic!"

STEVIE NICKS - I've talked about her many times on this site about why I believe Ms. Nicks would be great as a solo act inductee. It's either her, Diana Ross or Tina Turner who could be the first female "Clyde McPhatter".

NINA SIMONE - Pretty much the same reason why she's on other people's predictions lists. She's just way overdue, even in death.

Others I've considered putting on my list: Glen Campbell, War, Cher, Willie Nelson, The Cure

So there you have it. This usually helps cure my 'end of summer blues', giving me something to look forward to in compiling this list. I do enjoy reading and comparing with everyone else's list on this site. However, at the same time, sometimes I feel like "Whatever...", when I do these lists. Look, I'll be the 1000th person to complain and moan about the Rock Hall - they're getting to the point where the institution is not going to be taken seriously for awhile. I just feel now that there is way too much of a backlog of artists that are not in. Several genres and many subgenres all have their share of being misrepresented, with some exceptions. Don't get me wrong, everyone that is in the Hall is deserving in some way. And I'm glad that the last few years the NomCom has paid more attention to groups that have been shunned (KISS, Rush, Chicago, etc.). But there's still quite a backlog. Starting with the 1950s, to the British Invasion, to Soul, the Country crossovers, New Wave, electronica, the list goes on and on. These are just many periods of time and genres that I think the Hall should catch up on. Did I mention the shortage of women? (By the way, I predict this year the NomCom will be laid back, gender-wise, which is why I put four women on my list) Its no wonder the Hall's politics continues to confuse people. One metalhead would wonder why Motorhead isn't in, or a longtime record collector hobbyist would question why this particular important band is not in the Hall.

In the end, it's us (the music fans and lovers) that keeps coming back. Kind of like being loyal to a sports team. We like to predict who will be the 'chosen few' who will be enshrined next Spring. Let's hope the Rock Hall will live up to its name for a little longer.

Here is the KING's 2016 slate of RRHOF nominees.
1.Moody Blues
2.Pearl Jam
3.Stevie Nicks
4.The Cure
5.The Spinners
6.Chic
7.Nine Inch Nails
8.Bon Jovi
9.Journey
10.Janet Jackson
11.Procol Harum
12.Judas Priest
13.Gram/Emmylou
14.Duran Duran
15.Bad Company
16.Bryan Adams
17.LL Cool J
18.The Cars
19.Kool & The Gang
20.J. Geils Band

It's a strong list of nominees and 3 women with a chance at induction. Emmylou, Janet Jackson, and Stevie Nicks. Kool and the Gang has been around 50 years and fills many boxes. I guess Bryan Adams is my biggest surprise but he started in music really young. Around 40 years ago. He's had a few Diamond albums and Reckless is a Classic. I think Paul Rodgers should be in HOF. Bad Company might be his best chance. They made plenty of Classic Songs: Bad Company, Shooting Star, Rock & Roll Fantasy etc. I think LL Cool J's time is here. He's real popular and could really rock the stage. As many FRL regulars have stated, Pearl Jam a lock for Induction and Chic will be forced in with some creative voting. It's early for the other awards but Willie Nelson deserves to be in somehow as Lifetime or Musical Excellence Award. Jeff Lynne deserves to be in as well. I counted 11/20 former nominees on my ballot. Should be another excellent slate of deserving nominees. Hopefully, the RRHOF listened to some of Steve Miller's suggestions and made some changes. KING

I've read some great Nomination lists. Ed and Jason picked the Guess Who. I did not think of that one. The Hall may wait though. Wow. Arthur Brown. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. he had a huge hit with Fire in the Summer of 1968. That is certainly a left field pick. I suppose its possible but I don't expect it. Quicksilver Messenger Service may be more likely. I am not picking them either. Just thought I would mention them.

Classic Rock picked the Meters like I did. I think that is a very decent pick. I was not thinking of the Janet Jackson pregnancy. I picked both her and Tina Turner. I'm thinking if they gave Chaka Khan a chance they will give Tina a chance too.

A few of you picked earlier acts like Mary Wells and the Marvelettes. Their careers go back to about 1961,1962. Unfortunately the time may have passed for those to be a likelihood. That is because of the Nom Com change. I think later 60s artists like the Moody Blues and Procul Harum are still on the mark. I am just not sure about both at the same time. The Monkees are also very possible.

Journey is a good populist pick as well as Bad Company. My feeling is they may wait in light of so much Classic Rock last year. I certainly love my Classic Rock but the Hall may want to minimize Classic Rock a bit. The Classic rock I have picked for 2017 is a little earlier.

Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 08/23/2016 @ 09:35am

Now as far as the Classic Rock on my list I was thinking it would be more low key. Although the Moody Blues are pretty darn popular. They stand out as being snubbed. J. Geils Band and Todd Rundgren are legendary but more low key to many people.

I agree that Duran Duran deserve a nomination. I picked them as a nominee last year. I just think that the Hall may want to still try the 80s alt thing. I have seen how that goes. I go with the Cure even though I am not a fan. I look at Duran Duran as 80s prog in a sense. They may hold off on them a little longer.

Many of you agree with me on Chic and the Spinners returning. They are both repeat nominees that keep coming up for Disco/R&B.

Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 08/23/2016 @ 11:12am

Duran Duran is an interesting mention. As far as the 80's go, The Cure and Depeche Mode were more influential.

Posted by Marissa on Tuesday, 08/23/2016 @ 11:23am

The Smiths are also an interesting mention for the 80s. They have been nominated in the last couple years. I think the Hall will switch back to the Cure as far as 80s. They have also been nominated before. I say again I am not a fan. I am not into the Cure style but I can't deny that they are influential. The Smiths are also but I find the Hall switches off on 80s acts.

Mi list would be:

Janet Jackson
Kate Bush
The Smiths
The Cure
Pearl Jam
CHIC
Kraftwerk
The Zombies
Nina Simone
Nilsson
Depeche Mode
ELO
YES

I've included The Guess Who on my predictions list for 3 years now. I say if they are going to keep on with the classic rock thing, put them in next. They have been around longer than Neil Young (who was inducted a long time ago). The Guess Who has won numerous Canadian awards (inducted into the country's music HOF in 1987). For some reason they just stand out to me. I don't know how respected they are/were by the critics. I just know they have had a positive effect on rock and roll and the hits, sales and chart positions show it.

Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 08/25/2016 @ 10:08am

As far as left-field picks this year I chose Arthur Brown (reasons stated in my post above). For some reason I decided to go with him. In the past, I've put Jane's Addiction, Nick Drake and the Cars. Of course, these are all acts that should already be in. I don't know what its going to take to ever get Nick Drake in.

Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 08/25/2016 @ 10:12am

Jason,

Fine picks I must say. I like the Guess Who quite a bit. I have the Gr hits at least. Not sure if the Hall will jump on them though. They are certainly a Good Classic Rock pick.

Arthur Brown is a good left field pick. I guess my pick of Todd Rudgren is a bit left field. Todd R is legendary. Quicksilver Messenger Service is a left field I thought of when yu mentioned Arthur Brown. Both from the 60s. I dont if either is a left field act the Hall has in mind.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 08/25/2016 @ 11:42am

I agree that Electric Light Orchestra deserve a nomination. I am not sure it will Happen this year though. I predicted them last year when I predicted 3 prog groups for one ballot. I am toning that down this year. I have seen how the Hall works. I am figuring now on one prog spot. I think that spot will be taken by the Moody Blues. I see Yes being on the ballot in a couple years.

After those 2 bands get inducted I can see the committee putting Electric Light Orchestra on the list. It may take a few years.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 08/25/2016 @ 16:00pm

Todd Rundgren was a past left-field pick for me too. This was last year, and shortly after I saw him perform live in my city I totally decided he was a totally crazy guy. I mean, this guy's most recent album was all EDM! But no one should ever leave out what he did in the 70s and 80s, be it producer and performer.

Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 08/25/2016 @ 22:35pm

Jason,

I see you like my Todd Rundgren choice. I am not saying he will be inducted but hey you never know. Left field choices have been inducted like Laura Nyro and Randy Newman.
What he did in the 70s and 80s was great. Something/ Anything is an album that stands out. I recall Hermit of Mink Hollow. There is of course his stuff with Utopia. He is a great producer too.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 08/26/2016 @ 07:48am

My picks:

Pearl Jam
2Pac
Chaka Khan
Chic
The Spinners
Kraftwerk
Nine Inch Nails
The Pixies (80s alternative will switch to an American artist never nominated before)
Electric Light Orchestra (been picking them the last few years, they would fly right in if nominated)
Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo (need more female based acts)
Judas Priest (Tom Morello will push for them through Eddie Trunk's influence)
Warren Zevon (the HOF loves male singer/songwriters)
The Commodores (left field selection plus Lionel is a big name at the ceremony)
The Marvelettes (female and HOF loves Motown)
Johnny Winter (the HOF loves blues rock)

Posted by boar on Friday, 08/26/2016 @ 16:26pm

I almost went with Johnny Winter. He is a great blues rock choice. What stopped me from picking him is I don't know if there is enough support this year. I almost picked him due to his passing. I went with the J Geils Band instead for a Blues Rock choice.

Warren Zevon is another one I considered but not sure about that one yet. He is a good cult artist. Now the only problem with the an act like the Marvelettes is they go back so far. Oldies acts that go that far back may pay the price these days due to the Nom Com change. However a 60s oldies act like the Zombies or the Monkees can still happen. People of the 1965-1969 era are stil on the Committee.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 08/26/2016 @ 19:21pm

Nearly one half century ago, rock music had suddenly started to become more complex. The simplistic riffs of the early blues artists had now become fused with the complexity of orchestral music. Classically trained, or educated musicians with a background in classical music had become interested in rock. The end result was later termed, " art rock," or "progressive rock," or "prog." Prog, rather unfortunately has been mostly ignored by the nominating committee and year after year, the "progressive rock" fan base has become increasingly more agitated by the lack of seeing many of their favorite artists either nominated, or inducted. As far as "prog" is concerned: In 1996, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane had been inducted. In 2002, Talking Heads were inducted. In 2010, Genesis had been inducted. In 2012, Deep Purple, Procol Harum and Rush had been nominated. Finally, in 2013, Rush had been
inducted. In 2014, Peter Gabriel, as a solo artist had been inducted. In 2016, Chicago and Deep Purple had been inducted. Yes had first been nominated for induction in 2013. After Chris Squire's death, Yes had been nominated again in 2015. Yes should receive another nomination later this year. This time however, Yes will be inducted. The members of Rush have also been strong advocates for Yes' induction.

The Moody Blues, co- founders of "progressive rock" have never been nominated. If The Moody Blues are nominated this time however, they will be inducted. For one thing, The Moody Blues have very strong advocates in former inductee, Rush.

As far as other bands are concerned, Duran Duran represent a paradox. They were a huge band in the 1980's, but unlike many of their contemporaries, they have continued to thrive and not only as a nostalgia act. When asked why Duran Duran has still been successful while many of their so- called contemporaries have disappeared, bassist and co- founder John Taylor had said that they have always had this weird, dark, experimental, slightly "progressive" side to their music. Perhaps that is why, so many of the members of their fan base are also aficionados of progressive rock. Once Duran Duran is nominated, they will be inducted. The members of Rush and much of their fan base, also really like Duran Duran.

Electric Light Orchestra has been described as the band which The Beatles would have become, if they had evolved from their Sergeant Pepper's incarnation. Jeff Lynne has been a huge influence upon many artists. His production skills are exemplary.

Sade, has a huge following amongst "progressive rock" aficionados also. Their genre of music, smooth jazz, was highly influenced by jazz fusion, a "progressive rock" sub genre, therefore Sade is "prog adjacent." The induction of Sade is totally warranted, they are one of the few groups which has been both loved by critics and fans, another such group was the previously inducted Talking Heads. If nominated, they should receive votes from previous inductees, Steely Dan, Traffic, Chicago and Rush, in addition to others, as well as their large fan bases. Helen Folasade Adu, has a magnificent "contralto" voice. She is a great composer and lyricist, her other band members are also instrumental in the creation of great music.

Carly Simon is a great songwriter. Many of her greatest songs
are still played on the radio. There have been criticisms against the Rock Hall for not inducting enough women. Carly Simon, however stands on her own, for the most part, as an egregious snub. Many songs by Carly Simon also feature orchestral accompaniment, therefore she is also "prog adjacent."

You have an interesting list of nominees. Here are mine:

01. The Moody Blues
02. Duran Duran
03. Yes
04. Electric Light Orchestra
05. Sade
06. Carly Simon
07. Pearl Jam
08. Chic
09. Nine Inch Nails
10. Smashing Pumpkins
11. Doobie Brothers
12. Foreigner
13. Kool And The Gang
14. Jim Croce
15. Dire Straits

Who do I think will be inducted in 2017, from my list of nominees:

1. The Moody Blues
2. Yes
3. Duran Duran
4. Sade
5. Carly Simon
6. Electric Light Orchestra
7. Pearl Jam

Who may also possibly be inducted?

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 13:42pm

I think the Tragically Hip will be the surprise on this year's ballot. The band is calling it quits, and Gord Downie is dying.

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 13:45pm

Enig,

Good to see you on here. So many of us are rooting for the Moody Blues to be on the ballot finally. I agree that if they are nominated they will be inducted.

As you have said prog rather unfortunately has been mostly ignored by the Nominating committee. As you pointed out as far as prog acts inducted. In 1996 there was Pink Floyd. In 2002 there was Talking Heads. In 2010 there was Genesis. Finally in 2013 Rush had been inducted.

Sorry I toned down the prog this year. Last year I predicted ELO. the Moody Blues and Yes on the same ballot. The way I see it when each of the prog acts above were inducted only 1 prog act was on the ballot. I have never really thought of the Jefferson Airplane as prog. They had some prog tendecies on Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxters. However by 1969 they were jamming in a much more bluesy style. Cuts like Uncle Sam Blues are evidence of that. This is not to say that Grace Slick does not support prog. I think she would easily vote for the Moody Blues.

I am abstaining from 3 prog acts at one time. I am of course predicting the Moody Blues. I just figure that was the manner in which the above prog acts were inducted. However good luck with Yes and ELO nonetheless. I suppose you never know. I just don't think so since the committee is so reluctant with Prog. We could get the Moody Blues because the Hall has never tried them and there is such a demand for them just as there was with Yes.

I do notice you have picked the Doobie Brothers. That is interesting. A straight out rock group. They are up the Hall's alley. It is for a different reason I didn't pick them. I think there will be a little less Classic Rock on the ballot after last year. I am going with pet projects like the J Geils Band and the Zombies instead. I will see you on here.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 13:59pm

I just want to clarify. J Geils Band and the Zombies can certainly be considered Classic Rock as well. I should have said less of the populist acts. What is great about the Moody Blues is they are populist and Prog at the same time.

The Doobie Brothers as well as Bad Company and some other popular ones I've seen on here are good picks but I think the Hall will have less of the Populist thing this year. Its the way Paul Butterfield was on a few ballots and then were inducted. They were a pet project of Paul Schaefer and some others.

Ahh but the Moody Blues I always predict. You have to have a popular legendary act on the ballot somewhere. The Moody Blues fit in perfectly.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 14:21pm

Ben,

Thank you. It's good to hear from you also.

Yes, I had listed Doobie Brothers as a possible nominee. I had watched the "Behind The Music" episode featuring their various members on YouTube. Former member, Tiran Porter is one of the most articulate and intelligent musicians in any group. It was a very interesting show. Other than a compilation, I have not yet purchased any of their studio albums.

On the other hand, I am definitely a huge supporter of those first 6 acts on my nomination list. I have many of their albums in my collection, with the possible exception of Carly Simon. I only have 5 of Carly's recordings and one compilation.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 14:25pm

I always forget about Jim Croce. In his short career and lifetime, he put out some memorable work. A lot of it still gets played. Hell, even the teens today know "Bad Leroy Brown". I'd be happy if he were nominated and inducted.

If Jeff Lynne (and ELO) were to get in, the Traveling Wilburys will share the same distinction as the Beatles: all of their members are in the HOF as a solo/group act. They deserve it as much as the similar bands of their time. As far as the Moody Blues, I'm happy with them too. They have a rare distinction as well: they're the only act to have one pop Top 10 hit in the 60s, 70s and the 80s in America. I know that won't help get them in; just throwing out some trivia. Here's to hope

Posted by Jason Voigt on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 18:44pm

The Moody Blues are also my biggest Rock Hall snub. I too hope this is their time to finally get a nomination and an induction!

Posted by Jennifer on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 19:41pm

ENIG

Impressed with your 15 Nominees. I think of your list Duran Duran, Moody Blues, Pearl Jam, YES have good chance of nomination and induction. Pearl Jam & Chic will be close to locks. I think the RRHOF wants to resolve this Chic saga. NIN has a high chance of returning. Enig, like your Dire Straits pick. Had they not ended the band, I think Dire Straits would be in RRHOF already. My guess is 2 Prog acts Moody Blues and Procol Harum will be nominated. Or ELO and YES some combination of the Four. Still cannot believe Duran Duran waiting outside Induction.Duran Duran has more hits and talent than 70% of those inducted. KING

Posted by KING on Saturday, 08/27/2016 @ 23:47pm

Enig,

I am also impressed with your list. I think Moody Blues,Pearl Jam and Yes have a good chance of nomination. Yeah I know I said Yes would be skipped this year. But hey they have a good chance. I still go most strongly with ones on my list. I do think Pearl Jam & Chic are locks. Oh I think the RRHOF wants to resolve this Chic saga. That Dire Straits pick is good. Ah yes the Dire Straits. I didn't pick them because of the 15 I picked. As far as Duran Duran I am not a huge fan but they have more talent than Abba or Green Day who were both inducted.

Posted by Ben on Sunday, 08/28/2016 @ 07:40am

"They have a rare distinction as well: they're the only act to have one pop Top 10 hit in the 60s, 70s and the 80s in America."

Moody Blues deserve it, but that can't be true. I know the Stones had #1 hits in the '60s and '70s and that 'Start Me Up' was #2 in '81, for instance... I admit I'm struggling to think of anybody else though.

Posted by Sean on Sunday, 08/28/2016 @ 18:09pm

I meant having just ONE top 10 hit in each of those decades. Yes, the Rolling Stones did have Top 10s in all of them. So did the Beach Boys, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and a few others. I just thought it was a cool random piece of trivia. For the record, "Go Now" hit #10 in 1966, "Nights in White Satin" went to #2 in 1972, and "Your Wildest Dreams" stopped at #9 in 1986. Talk about a long span between those last two.

Posted by Jason Voigt on Sunday, 08/28/2016 @ 19:05pm

What about GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. I GUESS THEY WHERE SO BAD OR THEY WERE TO GOOD. I GUESS NO BODY WANT TO ADMIT THEY MADE A MISTAKE IN NOT PUTTING IN THE HALL EARLIER.

Posted by Dennis Holiday on Sunday, 08/28/2016 @ 19:39pm

I see Grand Funk Railroad on a ballot in about 5 years. I don't think the Hall is thinking of them that fast. There will be plenty of Classic Rock acts on ballots. I just dont think they will. They had a decent career at times but there is others like the Guess Who, Bad Company and the J Geils Band that I think will end up on ballots first. J Geils have already been on a ballot or 2.

Posted by Ben on Sunday, 08/28/2016 @ 21:05pm

Sean,

Not only are you right about the Rolling Stones, but so did Neil Diamond. "Heartlight" made #5 in the '80s.

Thank you to Ben and KING,

I had chosen the artists on my list due to the upcoming 50th anniversary of "progressive rock." I would not be surprised if Procol Harum did receive another nomination, either. On next Saturday, "Roll The Bones" by Rush, will celebrate it's 25th anniversary.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 08/29/2016 @ 00:31am

Nick,

I was reading some old posts from early in the year. It seems like only yesterday we were discussing Lloyd Price and Solomon Burke. Your list for 2017 reflects the times.

Your list is similar to mine. We agree with a bunch. Like my list your primary list has diversity. You don't have older Oldies artists of the 50s and 60s. That reflects the Nom Com change.

Bad Company, The Cars and War are good picks. I did not pick those true but they are good. Yes is a great pick. I am skipping them this year in favor of the Moody Blues. I think the committee would only pick one prog choice. I am going with the Moody Blues. You do agree on one prog choice. You chose Yes that's all. You have a good list.

Posted by Ben on Monday, 08/29/2016 @ 09:46am

I'm surprised no one has mentioned:

The Moody Reds
LL Warm J
Doobie Sisters
Good Company
No
The Trucks
Nine Centimeter Nails
The Feet
Peace

Good point, Classic Rock:

The Moody Reds--not swallowing that pill
LL Warm J--just not a hot pick
Doobie Sisters--I could roll one way or the other on this one
Good Company--Can't stand them
No--Hard to turn them down
The Trucks--can't jump on board that wagon
Nine Centimeter Nails--they're not deep enough for me
The Feet--They stink.
Peace--I love and understand this pick, but some find it funny.

Thanks for the complements Ben; much appreciated. I try to be realistic with my predictions and offer a balance of rock, hip-hop, R&B/Soul, and other sub genres and trends. In terms of the choices you mentioned, I think Bad Company is a solid choice from the classic rock era. Paul Rodgers is one of the all-time best rock vocalists and should already be in the Hall. Plus, Steven Van Zandt is a fan of the band and plays them quite a bit on his SiriusXM station Underground Garage. I think he’ll also sway heavy for the J. Geils Band and they would be a good blues-rock choice. The Cars are a great New Wave/Classic Rock choice too. If the ballot’s not too classic rock heavy (like the 2014/2016 ballots), then I think the Cars could easily foresee an impending induction (the same goes for Yes). War seems like a solid funk choice, especially since the Rock Hall tends to nominate at least 1-2 funk artists in recent years (e.g., The Meters, Rufus/Chaka Khan, JB’s). It’s just a wild guess on my part, but I think War could get a 4th nomination this year. Questlove is a big fan of their work and they should have already been enshrined in the Hall.

Diversity is the key to a good Rock Hall list because if it’s too one-sided, it’s kinda boring and dull. In terms of a left-field pick, I chose Kate Bush for various reasons. First, she’s one of the most deserving candidates (regardless of gender) for the Rock Hall. Second, she fits the singer-songwriter bill (that the Committee seems to love) and a good choice for a female artist (especially since her popularity began in the late 70’s and 80’s). What hurts Bush’s chances (sadly) is that most of her fame took place in her native England and didn’t really make much of a splash in the U.S. If she had a couple of hits in the U.S. (like her contemporaries, Annie Lennox for example), she would be a top-choice for the Committee. In short, the Committee is too American-centric in their choices and that’s why deserving groups/bands like Kraftwerk (no matter how influential) will always be a tough sell for the general voters. It’s sad but true.

I wanted to put a 50’s or 60’s artist on my predictions ballot, but I don’t think that’ll be the case. Last week, I bought a CD of the Marvelettes Greatest Hits and I will say, I think they were a pretty underrated girl group from that decade. I only really knew them for their two biggest hits: “Please Mr. Postman” and “Don’t Mess with Bill.” They had some great Motown tracks like “Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead,” “Playboy,” “Beechwood 4-5789” and “The Hunter Gets Captured.” Initially I totally wrote them off as a one-note choice by the Nominating Committee but I pegged them totally wrong. They were nominated on the 2013/2015 ballots and of course didn’t prevail. With the recent Committee changes over the last year or so, I doubt they will get another nomination which is a damn shame. But again, the Committee does love their Motown acts so they always have some sort of a fighting chance.

I really wanna go with the Moody Blues but I don’t wanna predict them and get disappointed yet again. I mean, I wanna be genuinely surprised, almost like the previous ballots featuring Chicago, Rush, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Those artists were long-time snubs and rightfully nominated and inducted on their 1st appearances. A Moody Blues nomination would strike a similar cord with voters who probably think it’s a ‘now or never’ situation. I am rooting for the Moody Blues and hope they finally seek their rightful place inside the Rock Hall.

Nick,

That is a very good post that explains things. Bad Company is a good choice. Major band of the 70s. They were on Led Zep's Swan Song Label before Zep released anything on it. Just some trivia. I am choosing J. Geils Band and the Zombies as far as Steve Van Zan choices.

Diversity is in fact the key to a good Rock Hall list. I would never make my list all Classic Rock with some Metal thrown in. That would not be realistic. You have Chic, the Cure, J Geils Band Judas Priest as well as Janet Jackson and Kate Bush on one ballot. That shows diversity.

We agree on 50s or 60s artists. A few years ago when I first made predictions I predicted acts like the Marvelettes and the Five Satins. I know that the tune In the Still of the Night was huge in the 50s. As you said with the recent Committee changes I doubt either one will get nominations in the future. Its a shame. I explained I respect the past before me to an extent.

I am going with the Moody Blues. I have predicted them for about 6 years Now. I am going with Not wanting to be wrong as opposed to being surprised. The Moody Blues should get their place finally.

Now I think there will be slightly less Classic Rock on the ballot this year. This is not to say that there won't be. Only older oldies artists suffer from the Nom Com change. There was some upgrading by doing that but not a lot. Mid and late 60s artists still have a chance since people young at that time are still on the committee.

This strengthens chances for 70s and 80s acts. So whether it be Bad Company or the Spinners the 70s is still a focus. 80s Alt acts like the Smiths and the Cure have a better chance Now. Certainly Bon Jovi and the Cars stand a good chance moving forward.

Most lists I have seen reflect this. There is a lot of good strong lists on here.

In slightly more than a month, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will come out with their list of nominees. In October, Justin Hayward and John Lodge will also celebrate their 50th anniversary of writing great songs together. On November 11 of 2017, "Days Of Future Passed" will celebrate it's 50th anniversary. This landmark recording is one of the most important and most iconic concept albums of all time.

Enig,

It will indeed be the 50th Anniversary of Justin Hayward and John Lodge writing great songs together. 1966 was a time for change in the world of music. Previously the Moody Blues were one of many British Invasion bands with members like Denny Laine. I happen to know they opened for the Beatles in 1965. They had a Top 10 hit with Go Now. It was in August or Sept 1966 however that Justin Hayward came and started writing with John Lodge creating their most famous lineup. It led to Days of Future Passed in late 1967.

Been a while since I've been here. I see prediction season is in full swing. I'm not quite sure what kind of predictions I can make w/this class, except that Pearl Jam and 2Pac have two spots locked up.

I read these posts, and something Nick said stuck here. He mentioned that w/Pearl Jam most likely being the headliner, we may have a case where there is a fear that they overshadow anybody else in the class. If you look at it this way, it's entirely possible that acts that you may not have expected are chosen this year. As a "for instance", it is known that The Monkees are not necessarily held in the highest esteem by the Hall and/or Rolling Stone Magazine. However, they have a devoted fan base, and it looks pretty pathetic that they're not in. It's entirely possible that an act like this is inducted this yr., in a sort of "backhand" manner, the logic presumably being they'll be overshadowed.

It's not a nice logic, & certainly PJ would have nothing to do w/the scenario, but it might play out in this manner anyhow. It might be wise to think about groups that are, at least theoretically, on the outs w/the rock establishment, but who have rabid fan bases. Not sure exactly who this entails, especially now that acts such as Chicago and Kiss have made the grade, but it's worth a moment to ponder.

I'm with some of the others; I am not gonna get my hopes up for Moody Blues just yet. I'd rather be surprised as well. This was a long time ago, I know, but I can't forget that story about how the Moody Blues was brought up at a NomCom meeting (don't know what year) and everyone just laughed. And yes, I am aware that times have changed, as well as the committee, so I hope I'm proven wrong.

I'm glad Bad Company has been brought up in this thread many times. I should have included them in my list (saw them live back in June and the whole time I wondered why they're not in) but that just shows there is a heavy backlog of acts that need to get in. My way of thinking is: just give Paul Rodgers a Musical Excellence award, since he has fronted many groups in addition to Bad Company. That would kind of take a bit of controversy away. Anyone disagree?

Posted by Jason Voigt on Thursday, 09/1/2016 @ 18:18pm

I think Bad Company would suffice. He did some good stuff with Free. I don't know if the Firm is a good example of his Musical Excellence. It was a decent project for Jimmie Page. Paul Rodgers was the Vocalist. It would take a kit longer I think for Paul Rodgers to get the Musical Excellence award. I'm Ok with Bad Company in this thread. I did not include them in my list because I think there will be less Classic Rock. Otherwise fairly good pick.

I am glad to see the J. Geils Band coming up on posts quite a bit. Steve Van Zant loves them a lot. I think they stand a good chance of being on the 2017 ballot. Peter Wolf has performed and has been an inductor for the Hall. They would represent Blues Rock very well. Its a logical pick. They are one of those pet projects liked by the a few Committee members.

Ben,

You have made a very convincing argument aboutthe nomination of the J. Geil's Band. Of their work, I am only familiar with "Freeze Frame," however.

05. Sade
06. Carly Simon
07. Pearl Jam

Nearly one half century ago, rock music had started to become more complex. The simplistic riffs of the early blues artists had now become fused with the complexity of orchestral music. Classically trained, or educated musicians with a background in classical, or jazz music, had become interested in rock and roll. The end result had been later termed, "art rock," or "progressive rock," or "prog." Prog, rather unfortunately has been mostly ignored by the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Nominating Committee. Year, after year, the "progressive rock" fan base has become increasingly more agitated by the lack of nomination, or induction of their favorite artists into the Rock Hall.

However, as far as "prog" is concerned, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane had been inducted in 1996. Talking Heads were inducted in 2002. Traffic had received this honor in 2004. Genesis had been inducted in 2010. Finally after nearly 15 years of eligibility, Rush had been nominated for induction in 2012, along with Deep Purple and Procol Harum. In 2013, Rush had finally been inducted. In 2014, Peter Gabriel had been inducted as a solo artist. In 2016, Deep Purple and Chicago had finally been inducted.

Yes had been first nominated for induction in 2013. After Chris Squire's unfortunate death, Yes had been re-nominated in 2015. In 2016, Yes should receive another nomination. The "Voices For Yes" campaign had been instrumental on getting Yes on the ballot. Yes has many world class musicians amongst their ranks, in addition to the late great bassist Chris Squire. Steve Howe is among the greatest guitarists of all time. Rick Wakeman was listed as the third greatest keyboard player of all time on WatchMojo.com. Both Alan White and previous drummer, Bill Bruford, are both considered to be great drummers. Former member Jon Anderson has been recently named "Prog God" by PROG magazine. Yes is my co-favorite band musically and second on my list of favorite rock bands after Rush. Since the nominating committee has nominated Yes previously, I think that another nomination will be forthcoming. This time however, Yes will finally be inducted. The members of Rush have been strong advocates for Yes' induction.

The Moody Blues, the co-founders of "progressive rock" and "art rock" have thus far, never been nominated. They have however been listed amongst the Rock Hall's biggest snubs. Justin Hayward is a great songwriter, as are his bandmates John Lodge and former bandmates, Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder. Original member drummer and poet Graeme Edge has been there since their beginning. If The Nominating Committee chooses The Moody Blues this time however, they will be inducted. The Moody Blues have very strong advocates amongst former inductees Rush and Heart.

As far as other bands are concerned, Duran Duran represent a paradox. They were a huge band in the 1980's, but unlike many of their contemporaries, they have continued to thrive and not just as a nostalgia act. When asked why Duran Duran had been so successful while many of their contemporaries have disappeared, bassist and co-founder John Taylor had offered up this explanation. John Taylor has said that Duran Duran has always had this weird, dark, slightly "progressive" side to their music. Perhaps this is the reason why so many of the members of their fan base are also aficionados of "progressive rock." Once Duran Duran is nominated, they will also be inducted. Having several great albums, amongst their discography, possessing a world class bassist, vocalist and keyboard player should not hurt them either. Also, the members of Rush, as well as much of their fan base, will also advocate their induction.

Electric Light Orchestra has been described as the band which The Beatles would have become, if they had evolved from their "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" incarnation. Jeff Lynne has been a huge influence upon many artists, he is almost entirely responsible for their successful hit singles during the 1970's and early 1980's. Electric Light Orchestra has written many timeless songs, however I feel that the band should be inducted, not just Mr. Lynne. Jeff Lynne's production skills are exemplary. Once E.L.O. have been nominated, they will also be inducted.

Sade has also been a difficult band to define. Sade combines soul, jazz, soft rock, rhythm and blues and funk into a unique concoction that should be termed "progressive soul." Sade has a huge following amongst many "progressive rock" aficionados. Their genre of music, "smooth jazz" was highly influenced by jazz fusion, a "progressive rock" subgenre, therefore Sade is "prog adjacent." The induction of Sade is totally warranted. They are one of the few groups which have both been loved by critics and fans; another such group is Talking Heads. In both cases, the critics were on track. If nominated, they should receive votes from previous inductees: Steely Dan, Traffic, Chicago and Rush, in addition to their large fan bases as well as other inductees. Helen Folasade Adu has been an influence upon many artists, she also has a magnificent "contralto" voice. Sade is a great composers and lyricist, her other members are also instrumental in the creation of great and timeless music.

Carly Simon is a great songwriter. Many of her greatest songs are still played on the radio. There have been criticisms against the Hall for not inducting enough female artists. Carly Simon however stands on her own, for the most part as an egregious snub. Many songs by Carly Simon, also feature orchestral accompaniment, therefore she is also prog adjacent.

I am so sorry, I had meant to write the following: Helen Folasade Adu, aka Sade, is a great songwriter, composer and lyricist in her own right. the other members of Sade: Stuart Matthewman, Paul S. Denman and Andrew Hale are also instrumental in the creation of great and timeless music, as well.

Great post on ELO. I agree that ELO has been receiving a strong push the last year or so. It changes my timetable for their induction. Tough to say the exact reason. It could be that ELO fans have more social forums now to discuss the merits of ELO. Also, it helped that annual snubs like Chicago, Deep Purple, KISS, Rush etc have been recently inducted. ELO has been now pushed to the top of the snub list.

I would guess my FAV ELO song would be Don't Bring Me Down. Hope ELO receives induction for you ELO fans. KING

I have enjoyed the comments but just a reminder: The Moody Blues have been snubbed longer than ELO,J.Geils,Bad Company, Guess Who and many more. I really believe if not for the Moodies bands like ELO, Chicago,Yes, Kansas,Asia,Supertramp, Styx and others would not quite sound the same if not for one of the first groups to begin a new genre called art rock or progressive. Also I have read that Prince, Greg Lake,U2,Heart and The Verve had said to have been influenced by the Moodies. Justin and John have new material and the MB still sell out concerts at various and larger venues including Vegas. How many of these other bands can compare to that at the present time and have been together for 50 years! We are a VERY large fan base with members who refuse to go to the museum until the Moody Blues are inducted.
Another band that I believe does not get enough attention for consideration is "Roxy Music" Thank you to those here who continue to push for the Moody Blues in 2017 :)

I usually listen to Sammy Hagar's Big Rock Countdown on Sundays. For those that aren't familiar, Sammy himself counts down his favorite songs with a different theme each week. Recently he did a show based on bands that should be in the RRHOF. Most of the bands are those that usually pop up in our head most of the time (Yes, The Cars, etc.). The songs aren't ranked in any order, but at #1 was ELO. There you go.

Sue,

I do agree. Moody Blues are biggest focus with the snubs. J. Geils are also on my current list. They are extra and secondary compared to the Moody Blues. It happens I think both could possibly be inducted. They are 2 very different kinds of Rock.

I consistently predict the Moody Blues. I do have 15 picks altogether. I do hope the Moody Blues are finally on the Ballot at least. If they are picked I think then they will b inducted. The same way Chicago was last year.

I wanted to mention the Moody Blues in reference to influence on ELO. John Lodge of the MB is about to start a solo tour in the UK for support of his new cd
"10,000 Light Years ago". Bev Bevan from ELO is to be the drummer on his tour! So as I stated a few weeks ago the MB and ELO shared a manager Tony Secunda in the early days. Suffice to say there was influence on the bands with each other as they played the clubs during the early days as said in an interview on youtube by Bev mentioning the MB.

I want to post my first ever list of RRHOF nominees for the class of 2017:

Moody Blues
Pearl Jam
Tina Turner
Roxy Music
Duran Duran
2Pac
Spinners
Eurythmics
Nine Inch Nails
Joe Cocker
Moterhead
The Guess Who

It seems the list of RRHOF nominees gets shorter and shorter every year so I will leave it 12.
As always thank you everyone for your support of the Moody Blues in 2017!

Sue,

That is a great list. we have several in common. Moody Blues is my fav on the list like you. As far as the others. Pearl Jam is a lock as a nominee and inductee I would say. So key in the 90s. I don't talk a lot about 90s. Roxy Music is an act I support and expect at some point. They are not on my list this year. I already have 15. The Spinners is also a good pick. They are bound to be inducted one of these years.

Motorhead is a good Metal pick in light of Lemmy's passing. I also chose Judas Priest. There have often been 2 Hard Rock/Metal choices. The Guess Who is another fine choice. Great band of the late 60s early 70s.

So, I love The Moodies, love Yes, love ELO, and these are all act that have had a major impact on my life. However, above any of them, I hope that this is the Monkees' year to get in the hall.

I've been pretty passionate about promoting the Monkees' place in the annals of Rock. Their obvious "manufactured" stigma is a major factor in their continued lack of respect, but this is a lazy crutch of an excuse that disregards many of their extremely important contributions. Yes, they were a Tv show and part of a franchise that was assembled as a product. However, the quality of their music, their battles against the industry and continued longevity have proven them to be pop culture titans, and that cannot be ignored.

I've heard it said that in some ways, The Monkees could be considered among rock's first punk groups. This is obviously not in musical aesthetic, but in their attitude towards commercialism and the music industry greed that screwed them over as musicians. They had to fight tooth and nail in order to gain any control of their career. Although they had lots of (quality) hits and a highly rated TV show, they weren't interested in NBC and their money, but in being able to function as an actual band with artistic value and dignity. The efforts paid off and they were able to contribute original songs and play their own instruments. Some could consider that biting the hand that feeds you, but I disagree. To me, it demonstrates TRUE rock and roll spirit.

Their movie "Head" should secure their induction in and of itself. It's a ballsy, brilliant and deeply scathing deconstruction of the entertainment world. It took serious guts to release a feature film that was designed to deliberately alienate their fanbase, and it was also a springboard for Jack Nicholson who co-wrote the script with them. It is, by no small measure, my favorite Rock and Roll film.

And beyond all this, look at Michael Nesmith, one of the most influential figures in pop culture. His contributions to country rock are equalled only by Gram Parsons. And he is almost single-handedly responsible for the creation of MTV, which obviously revolutionized the music industry.

Sorry about the tangent, but I had to put that out there! For all the Yes's, Cars, Judas Priests and and Moody Blues's of the world, you absolutely deserve to be in the hall of fame. But until they decide to induct the Monkees, I just cannot buy into this institution as a serious showcase for Rock music history.
Thanks for reading!

Sue,

I just want to say that above all the Moody Blues have been snubbed longer than a lot of other acts because they have been around for around 50 years.

It has become noticed over the Years that they have been snubbed so long. Way back when Cream, the Doors, Grateful Dead Elton John Allman Brothers Band and Frank Zappa were inducted I heralded the Rock Hall as being on it. When David Bowie,Pink Floyd Crosby Stills and Nash Fleetwood Mac and Santana were I still thought they were pretty on it. It was then that I started noticing snubs. I've talked of this before.

You start noticing who is snubbed. Chicago,Rush Yes and of course the Moody Blues. Now they did catch up on Rush and Chicago. So you have to figure the Hall will eventually get to the Moody Blues. This seems to be a good time. Making room for acts for later acts like Blondie, REM and Patti Smith is perfectly fine that doesn't mean that the Moody Blues had to be excluded. So I would hope this is the year the Moody Blues are on a ballot.

Ben,
Thank you so very much for your positive impute for the Moody Blues :) I agree with all of your statements.
I want to remind the group what the criteria is for consideration to become a nominee into the rock and roll hall of fame from rockhall.com:

Artists—a group encompassing performers, composers and/or musicians—become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Besides demonstrating unquestionable musical excellence and talent, inductees will have had a significant impact on the development, evolution and preservation of rock & roll.
Also there has been problems with the "Committee" as a group. Many of the fans have noticed that unfortunately politics have become part of the process. I am very interested if finally the tides will turn with artists like Steve Miller and Neil Young voicing the issues. Remember it is not just based on sales or a short lived trend of a few hits but "Impact" on rock and roll music.... Of course I am certain the Moody Blues fit all of the criteria!
Josh,
I agree the Monkees should be considered...much more than several of the inductees of the past. I will not mention names-just go read the list...

I know they've been nominated before and failed to get in, but do T.Rex have any chance this year?
My reasoning is that Marc Bolan was just a superb and underrated songwriter, quite apart from being an influential artist. His influence on rock, indie, Punk, and metal is well documented. What's not as well known, is the extent to which his 1960's Tyrannosaurus Rex albums, influenced modern day artists such as Joanna Newsom.
With the tragic passing of Prince this year, Bolan's influence on him should not be underestimated, either.
It will be 40 years since his death next year. High time he was given due credit for his contribution to rock history.

A good point has been made about the Monkees. I must say I used to watch the show a lot when I was 4-7 years old. I used to run to the TV to watch the Monkees. They are one of several 60s acts that have a fairly good shot going in the Hall some time. They are not on my list. I have the Zombies as a 60s oldies choice this year.

Some other 60s acts with a fair shot in the future are the Turtles, Tommy James & the Shondells and the 5th Dimension. There is a few that are possible as far as 60s acts with a bunch of hits as well as influence.

There is certainly plenty of late 60s early 70s acts to still be on ballots and be inducted. The Moody Blues is a much talked about snub. There are others like Jethro Tull,Yes,Steppenwolf and the Guess Who. All of these acts were notable with albums in the late 60s early 70s. I love Jethro Tull. I am a huge fan. I haven't mentioned them too much. I don't think they will be on a ballot just yet.

Guess I need to get my predictions on the record. Will assume 12 nominees:

Chic
Pearl Jam
Tupac
NIN
Spinners
ELO
J. Geils Band
The Cure
War
The Marvalettes
Warren Zevon
Smashing Pumpkins

Probably 4 of these will make the cut ;-)

Here is my list for the 2017 Rock Hall of Fame nominees.

2PAc
Chic
The Cure
J. Geils BAnd
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Motorhead
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Todd Rundgren
The Spinners
Tina Turner
The Zombies

I just wanted to post it again. It has not changed. It covers a diversity. I predict the Moody Blues every year. As I've said I think they have a better chance now. Chic have been nominated every year for a long time so you have to figure here we go again. I think they will try Janet Jackson again and I am pretty confident about Judas Priest and Motorhead as Heavy Metal choices. So there is my whole list again.

Forget the 15 or 16 nominees. I'm psychic now. I'm just going to tell you who will be inducted in 2017.

Joan Baez

The Moody Blues
Electric Light Orchestra
Janet Jackson

For those of you who are predicting 60's groups - if the committee make-up hasn't changed, why would we expect to see more 60's groups nominated? It seemed that the "new" committee pretty much slammed the door on the 60's last year. There wasn't a single act nominated last year that had a significant part of their career in the 60's.

Posted by Classic Rock on Thursday, 09/8/2016 @ 22:01pm

My guesses for 2017:

Bon Jovi
Kate Bush
The Cars
Chic
Electric Light Orchestra
Janet Jackson
Kraftwerk
The Marvelettes
The Monkees
Motorhead
Pearl Jam
Tupac Shakur
The Smiths
War
Link Wray

Roy, swap out Joan Baez for 2Pac, and I'd say that's a very likely scenario.

Posted by Philip on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 00:28am

Classic Rock, I agree that with the current NomCom, predicting '60s acts is dicey, but the other big theme going on, based on the past few years, and especially this past year, is the induction of acts that in the past were considered anathema to the Hall. Rush, KISS, Deep Purple, Chicago.... prog and post-punk getting nominated. I think that's where a lot of people are getting the Monkees and the Moody Blues from. Honestly, I wish I could also use that logic to justify a nomination for Chubby Checker, but wish in one hand....

Classic Rock,

I have mentioned about 60s acts previously on here. I fall somewhere in the middle. I feel the Nom Com change knocks out any chance for 50s and early 60s acts like the Five Satins, the Marvelettes and Mary Wells.

However, I feel some acts who were significant in the Mid-late 60s still have a chance. The Nom Com change brought the layoff of the oldest people on the Com. The oldies people who grew up in those 50s. However, Steve Van Zant and Paul Schaefer are still on the committee who grew up in the late 60s. Thus we can have the Monkees, the Moody Blues Steppenwolf and the Guess Who. So the early 60s is out of the question but later 60s is not. I do not think the door is shut on that era yet.

I would say there will no longer be a lot of 60s acts but perhaps 1 or 2 on a ballot. I have the Moody Blues and the Zombies on my list from that era. The ballot will mostly comprise 70s and 80s acts. That's true. The Cars, Chic, Janet Jackson, Bad Company and Journey are all rather likely among others.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 08:26am

I just want to clarify that Steve Van Zant would not nominate the Moody Blues. I know that he hates prog. Perhaps Paul Schaefer and some others from that era. I can see S Van Zant nominating the Zombies for sure. He is a big fan. Possibly the Guess Who.

FRL - You're the first one I think I've seen brave enough to pick PJ Harvey. It would be well deserved. Here's hoping you're right.

Posted by DarinRG on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 17:23pm

FRL

There's no way the RRHOF Committee will select 4 First Time Eligibles with the backlog of artists needed to be nominated. Pearl Jam will be the only 1st time eligible nominated.

I think The Cure will take The Smiths spot on the ballot. The Devo and Tommy James picks are intriguing. I've had Tommy James in my final cuts list the last 3 years. Judas Priest is my heavy metal pick as well. I have Bon Jovi too though some consider Bon Jovi more of a rock band than heavy metal.
On the FRL ballot, I like the chances of Moody Blues and Judas Priest receiving enough votes for induction. The Smiths might be another Chic where it takes 8-10 nominations before induction. I would give this ballot an A-. Don't understand why The Spinners cannot receive enough votes for Induction. KING

Posted by KING on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 17:32pm

PJ Harvey seems like a real long shot, but stranger things have happened. My guess is they will go with a female artist who has been waiting longer like Kate Bush, Pat Benatar, etc.

I'm in agreement with FRL on the Marvelettes. The nom com loves Motown and will keep nominating them or Mary Wells periodically.

The Devo pick is inspired....hopefully that would become a reality. I could see the B-52s as another outside pick in this slot. Possibly the Cure or the Pixies in the Smiths slot here this year too.

Posted by boar on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 17:51pm

I agree there is No way the Hall will nominate 4 first Time eligible with such a backlog. I do think both 2PAc and Pearl Jam will be 1st time eligibles knowledgeable. I may have gone with Rage Against the Machine but I find that 2 First Time Eligibles is the limit. This happened for 2015 with Green Day and Nine Inch Nails.

I also agree the Cure will take the Smiths spot as an 80s alt choice. Devo and Tommy James are interesting. Judas Priest is one of my Heavy Metal picks. I have Motorhead too due to Lemmy's death.
Ahhh look at that the Moody Blues are a pick of FRL. They follow the logic Rush, Deep Purple and Chicago all going in due to popular demand and huge fan bases. Moody Blues is logical for sure and as many of us agree deserve it. Chic, Kraftwerk and Janet Jackson all make sense. Also put the Spinners in already.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 18:10pm

Lets try that again. I agree there is No way the Hall will nominate 4 first time eligible with such a backlog. I do think both 2PAc and Pearl Jam will be 1st time eligibles that are nominated. I may have gone with Rage Against the Machine but I find that 2 first time eligibles is the limit. This happened for 2015 with Green Day and Nine Inch Nails. Besides I don't think Tom Morello wants to pick his own band before a band like Judas Priest.

I also agree with the Cure as an 80s alt choice. Devo and Tommy James are interesting. Judas Priest and Motorhead are my 2 Heavy Metal picks.

Ahhh look at that the Moody Blues are a pick of the FRL. They follow of Rush, Deep Purple and Chicago all going in due to huge fan bases. Moody Blues is logical for sure and as many of us agree deserve it. Lets finally get the Spinners in.

I don't know why I threw that word knowledgable in, Total mistype.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 19:32pm

Think Motorhead & Tommy James & Shondells are excellent predictions. Also PJ Harvey or Kate Bush would be great female nominees, as would Ms. Jackson, of course.

Ido predict they'll be at least one band nominated that is pretty left field for most of us.

An impressive RRHOF nomination list. One of the best. I like the Devo and The Go Go choices. Agree on many including The Cars and Judas Priest. Los Lobos has some strong advocates and I can see them returning. A salute sir! KING

FRL,

Wow Finally you have posted the Moody Blues! I am stunned.... and very happy :)

We are long suffering! We are also a very large fan base and I would think the MB should be inducted on their first ballot.

Very interesting list...many very good choices.

Janet has had a huge social media push but I strongly feel Tina Turner should go first. Where would Janet be today if not for female artists who came long before? Janet will probably get the nod...sadly that is how these situations happen. Social media is a powerful influence and I think that works against the artists who have an older fan base.

With all the press over the last couple of years over changes and problems with the committee there is no telling what will happen..we shall see

Thank you everyone for your support for the Moody Blues in 2017.

Posted by Sue on Friday, 09/9/2016 @ 22:50pm

I'd like to go on record in support of Pat Benatar.

The hall has been criticized for weak female presentation on recent ballots, yet Pat Benatar has never been nominated.

Let's remember back to the late 70's and early 80's and make a list of prominent female rock artists. Here goes...Heart, Pat Benatar {End of List}

15 Top 40 singles. 6 platinum albums(2 multi), 2 other went gold.

I'd take "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" or "Heartbreaker" over any of Joan Jett's hits. Excuse me, Joan Jett covers. If it wasn't for Tommy James and Shondels (Crimson and Clover), I Love Rock and Roll (Arrows), Gary Glitter (Do You Wanna Touch Me) she would have never had a career.

Heart and Pat Benatar, that's it. And don't come at me with the Runaways. I don't care that they had a following of 8 people in Japan and their albums were certified triple tin (30 copies) in the states the late 70's. Nobody ever heard of them until about 5 or 6 years ago, and now they are recognized by 1 out of 100 people.

Pat Benatar should be in. Too many great songs to ignore. She was playing edgy rock and roll at a very high level when very, very few female artists were. It's a travesty that she's not yet been recognized.

This was a good list but the Go Go's? Before Eurythmics... Really? Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart influenced the beginning of the 1980's music scene.

No Moody Blues...But Kool and the gang?

Great list, FRL. You're pretty much on the same boat as me and all the others on this page. Well, except for the PJ Harvey part. I knew she was a first-time eligible, but I just don't really think its her time yet. Unfortunately, I only know her song "Down By The Water", but I am aware that her first two albums are on Rolling Stone's Top 500 list. That would give people the idea she's as great.

Alanis Morissette is also eligible, but in 1991/92 she was only popular in her native Canada. I'm sure she would get in sometime in the next decade, since many women today cite her as an influence and inspiration. Some others, but not too serious I would think have the potential for HOF (not too soon): Cypress Hill, Rage Against the Machine

Sue,

I do agree. Wow Finally the FRL has posted the Moody Blues! Even they had never done that before. I was pleasantly surprised and Very Happy too. You are right I would think the M Blues should be inducted on their first ballot.

It is a very interesting list. I do feel that Tina Turner should go first. I don't if either will. I picked both for the ballot. My feeling is to give Tina a shot. I don't get into inductees much yet. Lets see the real ballot first. I will only say that the Moody Blues should be inducted.

Over the last couple years there has been changes and problems in the committee. It seems to me it strengthens Classic Rock acts of various kinds as well as 70s and 80s R&B. I do feel that there will be a little less Classic Rock this year. At least as far as Popular names. The Moody Blues would be one to have.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 09/10/2016 @ 08:51am

Great selections, FRL.

Obviously, I love the Janet Jackson pick. She should've gotten in last year, but this year will do just fine.

PJ Harvey is a pleasant surprise. She absolutely rocks - the critics love her. She just released a new album. She definitely deserves a nomination and shouldn't be overlooked.

I'm a bit torn on 2Pac. He's worthy - I just wish Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest (and a few others) would get in before him. It would be kinda cool to have Janet and 2Pac inducted in the same year, though. (Poetic Justice, anyone?)

Pearl Jam is a slam dunk. I suppose Rage Against The Machine's chances are sky high with Tom Morello on the NomCom.

Kraftwerk, NIN and The Smiths all make sense. I'd love to see The Cure get another nod, too.

Chic is quite a shocker. (Not) The Spinners and The Marvelettes are solid choices, too.

I'd be curious to hear FRL's next couple of artists that just missed the cut of 15.

No Willie Nelson, no Joan Baez, no Monkees, no ELO in the FRL predictions

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 09/10/2016 @ 10:24am

Hmm, interesting choices. I absolutely agree with the repeat nominees choices, although I would add Yes.

A number of the new nominee choices are a quite a long shot in my opinion.

I adore PJ Harvey, she's an all-time fav of mine, but I just don't see that happening. If they haven't even gotten to nominating Kate Bush yet, PJ seems pretty unlikely. I also think that Bjork will likely beat her to the punch in the next couple of years. Both her and Bush have had more cultural impact than Harvey.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I do think the Monkees fanbase will hold dominion Tommy James and the Shondells this year. Theirs is a stunning absence.

I'm 50-50 on Rage and 2Pac. I think 2Pac stands a better chance simply to fill the rap slot. I also think Judas Priest stands a higher chance than Rage this year.

Devo also feels like a long shot to me. I love 'em, we need more Ohio acts and Mark Mothersbaugh has been a force to be reckoned with in the industry, but I think they'll be put on the back burner for a while.

Moody Blues? All the way!! I hope the buzz surrounding them resonates with the nom com, because they're another gaping hole in the hall. I'm still a little skeptical, but recent rock hall acknowledgements of fan favs give me hope. Monkees fans, get to work!! I also want to see this work for Patsy Cline and Weird Al!!!

I'd like to see The Cure sneak back onto the ballot, but I don't imagine they're share a ballot with the Smiths. I'd be ready for one or the other.

I also wouldn't be surprised if either Los Lobos or Link Wray come back for repeat appearances. And I don't know why, but I feel like down the road, we may see a Musical Excellence snag for Yoko Ono. Thoughts?!

I know this would never happen, but I would love an all 90s alternative class that looked like this:

Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Smashing Pumpkins
Nine Inch Nails
Jane's Addiction
Alice In Chains

Not a chance, but I can dream!!

Posted by Greg P. on Saturday, 09/10/2016 @ 21:05pm

With Pearl Jam's induction a mere formality, I'm curious who would be next out of the Seattle scene Alice In Chains or Soundgarden to be inducted. Both present a good argument for induction first. I probably liked Alice In Chains better though Super unknown is a powerful CD. FRL regulars, who do you think would be nominated first? Alice In Chains or Soundgarden. KING

I prefer Alice In Chains, too.

Greg P just hit on an idea that I've had for awhile. It would never happen for a host of reasons. But, to fix the deficits in several genres (like prog, metal, 80s alt, 80s pop, etc), each year they have a ballot of just that genre. Then they'd be forced to put in five worthy metal acts at once, etc. Imagine how many people would stop bitching if one year they put in Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Megadeath. Then next year King Crimson, Yes, Moody Blues, ELO and ELP. Then The Cure, Smiths, Depeche Mode, Devo and Duran Duran. And on through underrepresented genres. Again, never happen, but in a few years it would go towards fixing lots of problems.

Posted by Dezmond on Sunday, 09/11/2016 @ 08:32am

I'm not even making a prediction because it's such a crapshoot beyond Pearl Jam. But I would love to see The Cars and Yes and The Cure and The Smiths get another shot. Some of those would steal votes from eachother, I know, but at least Yes and one of those other three. Also really hoping for Roxy Music, King Crimson and Duran Duran, but don't see those getting nominated any time soon. Maybe Roxy.

Posted by Dezmond on Sunday, 09/11/2016 @ 08:41am

I've always been baffled that Roxy Music hasn't been nominated. Hugely respected and influential and worthy, and it would also get Brian Eno in.

Posted by Dezmond on Sunday, 09/11/2016 @ 08:44am

KING,think Alice in Chains was better band (with Layne), but think Soundgarden will be nominated 1st. Think both are worthy for Hall.

Posted by Paul in KY on Sunday, 09/11/2016 @ 13:07pm

Dezmond,

I think that's a great idea. It would make fans excited. Of course they'd be outraged when you got to the class of LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, 2pac, and Dr. Dre!!

That wouldn't bother me, as I am one who believes hip hop belongs in Rock Hall. But you can imagine the Rock purists' furor.

Posted by Greg P. on Sunday, 09/11/2016 @ 13:30pm

I agree with you on all counts. I just listed some of my personal egregious snubs (mostly prog and all things 80s), but sure, a hip hop class, a 90s class, another R&B class, etc. It would be a great way to clean up genres that have been underrepresented. Won't happen, though. They want to look more diverse, and there is the ceremony broadcast to think about.

Here are a few sleeper "wild card" picks that could make the cut as surprises that I don't see mentioned yet:

Tracy Chapman
Huey Lewis and the News
The J.B.'s (even though they were nominated last year)
Gil Scott-Heron
INXS
Phil Collins

Great list, FRL!

This is probably an unreasonably optimistic ballot prediction, but it'll have to do:

2Pac
Janet Jackson
Kate Bush
Kraftwerk
Link Wray
MC5
Motörhead
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Rufus/Chaka Khan (some variation of this)
The Cars
The Cure
The Meters
The Moody Blues
The Spinners

As much as I'd like to join FRL in a prediction for PJ Harvey, my optimism has its limits. She's like Blur last year, first ballot deserving but standing in a line that should be nowhere near as long as it is at this point in the game. I gave Kate Bush that spot. I'm not high on Pat Benatar as a candidate myself, but she has a case to be made and I could see this NomCom go that route, as well. I could see the Moody Blues or Monkees getting the populist complaint spot this year, I just took a guess on the Moodys, beyond a random guess I'd probably be putting more thought into than the NomCom will. I'll go with Motorhead rather than Judas Priest just to be contrarian, though I'd be happy with either and I think all the other picks are pretty self explanatory at this point.

Interesting choices, FRL.

If I had to choose 6 or 7 from your list for induction, they would be as follows:

Pearl Jam
Rage Against The Machine
Judas Priest
The Spinners
Chic
The Marvelettes

as for a 7th, I'm not sure.

If I had my own choices, I'd probably present the following:

PJ
Alice In Chains
Soundgarden
Samshing Pumpkins
Megadeth
Bad Company
T-Rex
Link Wray
The Monkees
War
Chic
Def Leppard
Blur
The Black Crowes
The Spinners

My own class for this year would read as:

Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
The Monkees
Link Wray
Blur
War
The Spinners

The others I would ration out in groups of two or three, as to not interfere with other potential first time acts for the next two or three yrs. (there's some heavyweight acts in the offing).

As the Roman poet Virgil put it many centuries ago, fortune favors the bold. So I have to commend both FRL and E-Rockcracy for two very bold sets of predictions. Remember, if anybody had suggested the ballot we got for the Class of 2016, they would have been laughed off this site: a half-dozen 70s classic rock snubs plus Los Lobos plus The JBs? Ridiculous!

But here's my extended take: FRL is betting on the Hall moving beyond the 60s and 70s with this list, and to that end, they may be right. I very much doubt that four first-year eligible acts will make it on the ballot, not if the Smashing Pumpkins couldn't make it last year. I suspect it will be Pearl Jam and 2pac, who figures on nearly everybody's list, but RATM and PJ Harvey are somewhat on the periphery. Indeed, RATM would be a huge conflict of interest with Morello on the committee. Kudos, for the Moody Blues pick, though. It's got to happen one of these years!

For E-Rockcracy, the list is bold in a different way with some eclectic choices: The Shangri-Las (also on my prediction list), The Go-Gos, Kool & the Gang, and return engagements by Los Lobos and Link Wray. My only problem is this: the Hall was pilloried for a class that was very narrow: four 70s Classic rockers plus a rap group. Respectfully, every female act and every African-American act save 2Pac is unlikely to fly with the Voting Committee. I suspect that the Hall will want to stack the deck just a bit more in favor of a can't-miss female and/or R&B nominee- someone like Whitney, Carole King, Tina Turner, or even a second try for Janet. Then again, more plausible nominees like The Spinners, Chic, Chaka Khan, and Janet didn't get far last year. So why not shake it up?

Both included Devo- a no-brainer that I'm embarrassed to have not seriously considered. I forgot all about their Ohio connection (after all, their belief in the de-evolution of humanity was formed whilst watching the National Guard shoot down their classmates at Kent State in 1970.) Anyway, their roots in the Buckeye State work in their favor, although I think they'd want to hold that off until a year when the ceremony itself in Cleveland- perhaps alongside Trent Reznor?

Again- two sets that I enjoyed reading and were clearly written out of a deep knowledge and an abiding affection for all things rock and roll.

If FRL's list actually happened, I'd vote for The Moody Blues, Kraftwerk, Janet, Judas Priest, and The Spinners. The most likely class, though, would be Moody Blues, Pearl Jam, 2Pac, Janet, and Nine Inch Nails, with Devo in reserve for a sixth spot.

If E-Rockracy's list came to fruition, I'd vote for Kraftwerk, The Monkees, Judas Priest, The Cars, and Pearl Jam. That bears a bit more resemblance to the actual class that might result: Pearl Jam, 2Pac, Monkees, Judas Priest, and The Cars, with Link Wray in reserve.

I stick by my picks, but I'll be honest- part of me wishes I found room for Eurythmics and The Monkees.

Darin RG,

Your list is rather optimistic. What I also notice it has less Alt of the 80s and 90s than I would expect from you. I thought you would have chosen Sonic Youth, The Smiths and the Cure at the same time. You mentioned something like that last year.
Your list is rather similar to mine.

You did in fact choose Janet Jackson, the Meters and in fact the Moody Blues as I did among others. I like your list. Kate Bush and Link Wray may both be a bit optimistic. Its for different reasons. The success of Kate Bush was mainly in Britain which may delay her but not deny her. In the case of Link Wray I think the chance may be a bit slim due to the Nom Com change.

We both chose the Cure as an 80s alt choice. I am not a fan but recognize they have influence. You have a fine list. I am impressed at your older choices. I guess you recognize that there would still be plenty of older choices for Nominees. You have a good list.

Enig, saw Eagles of Death Metal at Shakey Knees Music Fest, but they did not cover that tune during their great set. At least I think they didn't.

Hope you get to see them sometime, as they are badass.

Rock Hall Monitors is probably the closest to who I think the nominees will be. My predictions are: Pearl Jam, Chic, 2pac, Janet Jackson, Los Lobos, NIN, The Smiths, Jane's Addiction, Judas Priest, War, The Cars, Kraftwerk, Pat Benatar, The Monkees, ELO. I've had a gut feeling on JA for this year for a little while, and Lollapalooza's 25th anniversary (and the Tom Morello sit-in) certainly isn't hurting their odds.

Also, I thought of an idea that will never happen, but is really fun to dream about. Instead of an expensive dinner (just about the least rock n roll thing there is), it could become a festival. This would encourage larger classes, help with the clusterf*ck that was the NWA induction (not knowing if they would perform until days before), make people actually pay attention to the rock hall, and especially sell tickets, and make it a live event people want to go to. On the downside, however, would be that it discourages artists who've passed and bands who've broken up from being voted, and choosing between Morrissey and Marr for a Smiths induction performance would only throw more gas onto the fire. But hey that way they might stop ignoring Phish.

Sue, those are great choices. Once again, here is my list of nominees:

I have amended my list of nominees to reflect those who I believe will be nominated. I am going for 18 artists this time:

01. The Moody Blues
02. Yes
03. Duran Duran
04. Electric Light Orchestra
05. Sade
06. Carly Simon
07. Pearl Jam
08. Doobie Brothers
09. Foreigner
10. The Cure
11. Kool & The Gang
12. Chic
13. Nine inch Nails
14. Smashing Pumpkins
15. Jim Croce
16. Dire Straits
17. J. Geils Band
18. The Spinners

Who do I think will be inducted? The first six artists on my list, of course. I also think that Bernie Taupin will be inducted as a songwriter and Brian Eno and Todd Rundgren will be inducted as producers.

I'm probably one of the last FRL regulars to make a list of my predictions, but I have finally done so. Here are my 16 predictions...

1. 2Pac
2. The Cars
3. The Commodores
4. Electric Light Orchestra
5. Janet Jackson
6. Judas Priest
7. Kraftwerk
8. The Marvelettes
9. The Monkees
10. Pat Benatar
11. Pearl Jam
12. Smashing Pumpkins
13. Sonic Youth
14. The Spinners
15. Toots and the Maytals
16. A Tribe Called Quest

"Bold" Aspects of my Predictions...

1. For the second year in a row, there will not be a singer-songwriter type artist on the ballot

2. Chic gets a break for a year

3. There will be a second rap act on the ballot (A Tribe Called Quest), despite the possible "split vote" scenario for rap which could potentially hurt Tupac's chances of induction

4. Nine Inch Nails will not return to the ballot for a third straight time

5. My Left-Field, out of nowhere pick that isn't on anyone's radar is legendary reggae group, Toots and the Maytals.

Those are my predictions, for those that are interested in reading my reasons and logic for my picks, check out my fully detailed blog on the subject at the following link..........

Enig,

I see you amended your list. Mine is the same. I do see your added the Cure. I think to be objective to all genres they have a good chance. At least a good chance to be nominated.

I also see you added the J. Geils Band. Were you inspired by a few of us choosing them. It represents Blues rock for a ballot. They have a long career from long before Freeze Frame. The Doobie Brothers and Jim Croce are good picks too.

Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 09/13/2016 @ 08:35am

Donnie,

I read your blog. Your list is somewhat different from some ours. Like others I went with some Classic Rock. You did also. I notice you did not have the Moody Blues as a pick. I think the Hall may want to finally take care of them. Acts notable in the Late 60s early 70s are still in the running.

You did say the Nom committee got Younger. Just a little younger overall right Now. Guys like Paul Schaefer have been around a real long time. I am a little surprised you picked the Marvellettes after recognizing a a slighlty younger crowd. Only in the case of the Marvelettes on your list. The Monkees are certainly still in the running. They had hits 1966-1968.

I have Tina Turner as an R&B act never on a ballot. I did pick repeat Noms a lot for R&B like Chic and the Spinners.

We do agree on Judas Priest for Metal. I am bold enough to pick a 2nd with Motorhead. I am going with The Cure for 80s alt not Sonic Youth. I would have picked Pat Benatar but I picked other priorities. I went with Both Janet Jackson and Tina Turner for female picks. Last year the 2 big female picks were Janet J. and Chaka Khan. I simply switched Chaka with Tina. You do have a good and interesting list.

2Pac
Dick Dale
Electric Light Orchestra
Harry Nilsson
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
Kraftwerk
Nine Inch Nails

Pearl Jam
The Cars

Donnie,

I must say your picks of The Cars, The Commodores and Electric Light Orchestra are real good. I almost considered amending my List but I'm not. I feel strong about my 15 picks. My list includes acts liker Chic, The Cure, J Geils Band Janet Jackson and of course the Moody Blues. I think we both picked Janet J. A bunch of my others are different. Good list though.

Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 09/14/2016 @ 15:13pm

Max, thank you for your kind words.

Donnie, great thoughts. Wow, you really pull all out all the stops to make your entries look awesome.

If anyone's too lazy to read the blog that was in FRL's twitter feed, my nominee predictions are:

1. Pat Benatar
2. The Cars
3. Chic
4. The Cure
5. Janet Jackson
6. Judas Priest
7. Kraftwerk
8. Los Lobos
9. The Monkees
10. The Moody Blues
11. Nine Inch Nails
12. Pearl Jam
13. The Smiths
14. The Spinners
15. 2Pac

Another thought crossed my mind.... this presidential election causing such visceral a reaction to many voters, do you think the NomCom might select a very liberal singer/songwriter to especially make a statement against this year's Republican nominee. It's no secret the Hall's powers-that-be generally tend to have a liberal bent, but would they actually nominate someone like Phil Ochs or Gil Scott-Heron to hammer home their point-of-view, or would that be the point of nominating Rage Against The Machine, whom I did not predict? Just a little food for thought. Discuss.

Pearl Jam themselves would probably be sufficient for that...with their MTV/Ticketmaster boycotts, pro-choice activism, firing Dave Abbruzzese for being too conservative and 'traditional rock star' for the rest of them...

Philip

Enjoyed your 15 Nominees List. Several are on my list too. I like Bad Company this year as a Left Field pick as I think Paul Rodgers should be inducted. Guessed right on Los Lobos last year. Los Lobos could be another Chic. I can see them nominated next 5 cycles or so. Fantastic musicians. Pat Benatar should have been inducted before Joan Jett. Hoping this will be Pat's year. The Cure & Judas Priest are two on my list as well. Both could be nominated and inducted.

You seem to think on my wavelength in your picks. RRHOF Nom Com showed their hand last year. More commercially successful and popular artists and singers than some years past where a few obscure artists were nominated and inducted. I don't have many FAVS that I say MUST induct but I would love Bad Company, Duran Duran, Moody Blues to finally receive nominations. Willie Nelson deserves induction before he dies someday. KING

Posted by KING on Thursday, 09/15/2016 @ 02:13am

King,

I liked your list. Moody Blues, Pearl Jam and the Cure are 3 on my list. You have 20 fine picks. I do't really think the Ballot will have 20. I think that's too many these days. 15 acts seems to be the standard. They are fine picks though. Bon Jovi, Journey and Janet Jackson all reflect the 80s nicely. We both picked Janet J.

I went with some left field ones and Pet projects. J Geils Band, The Meters and Todd Rundgren. You did pick J Geils. A Blues Rock choice. You may know their career in the 70s. Full House and Bloodshot were early albums in the 70s. Now I think there may be a little less popular Classic Rock but that there will be popular artists in general like Janet Jackson, The Spinners and Tina Turner as well as the Moody Blues who were a key Classic act in Rock. I see your point about Willie Nelson.

I would like the following entered into
The hall of fame please.

1. Billy Idol/Steve stevens eligible 2001
2. Adam and the ants. Eligible 2007

Those are the only ones I'm curious
About why they haven't been.

"I like Bad Company this year as a Left Field pick"

It wouldn't surprise me to see Bad Company on the ballot especially with their recent classic rock fixation, but how on earth would it be 'left field'? They, like Boston, Journey, and Foreigner basically all get 10 or more songs played on every American classic rock station. Classic rock fans expect those bands to be in eventually (whether they deserve it or not is another matter - I would say Foreigner does not but the other 3 have a decent but hardly overwhelming case, but there are still much more important snubs in and out of classic rock.) I also think the NomCom would go for them over the other three because of their connections with classic '60s bands (King Crimson, Free, Mott the Hoople - none of whom were inducted, but still) and their grittier and less slick/polished sound which would be more likely to appeal with '60s/'70s critics who would tend to detest overproduction. There are many more bands more deserving than any of them, but I don't think anyone would call any of them left-field if they appeared on the ballot. I think Bad Company is likelier because they were not as polished and because Paul Rodgers's style would be seen as more 'rock and roll' by the older members of the NomCom. I actually think Boston and Journey were in the long run more influential than Bad Company (because the '80s arena rock bands were more likely to have a slick polish like Boston/Journey than a gritty retro sound like Bad Company, or Foreigner, which sort of fused the slickness and retro together but almost influenced no one), but I hope they all wait several more years while many of the many more important acts are inducted first. Regardless, I don't think any of them would be a shock, and Bad Company and Journey are on the previously considered list. I do suspect the NomCom would prefer Bad Company out of any of them.

For any kind of classic rock act to be considered left-field, it would have to be somebody who only has 2 or 3 hits on classic rock radio and no real influence like Foghat, The Outlaws, Loverboy, .38 Special, Eddie Money, Toto, etc... I don't think many people would argue any of them were deserving. I don't think it's possible to even MAKE A CASE for a classic rock act who is considered left-field, unless it's somebody who has general acclaim from music critics elsewhere (I don't know if any classic rock radio plays like Los Lobos or Living Colour, for instance, but it wouldn't surprise me...those might be considered left-field from a classic rock perspective, but they were important outside of classic rock.)

"Those are the only ones I'm curious
About why they haven't been."

Because the Hall hates new wave and anything synthesized basically. They like CBGB and the Police, but basically after that new wave has been completely snubbed. I think at the very least B-52s, Buzzcocks, The Cars, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Devo, Duran Duran, Echo & the Bunnymen, Eurythmics, The Jam, New Order, Gary Numan, Roxy Music, Television, and XTC would be considered more important than Idol or Ant and certainly not all those bands I listed will get in at this point considering very few of them were even nominated. Idol would be more likely than Buzzcocks, Echo, Jam, Numan, Television, or XTC I imagine because none of them were hugely popular here.

Posted by Sean on Thursday, 09/15/2016 @ 19:01pm

Oh right, and they like Elvis Costello and Pretenders as well, but the point stands.

SEAN

Maybe,Bad Company and left field pick not perfect word choice but they have been eligible since 1999. They have never been Nominated in about 18 ballots. Don't see many of the FRL regulars having Bad Company on their nominees list. I have seen a few this year with Bad Company sprinkled on their lists. First time. I get your point about Classic Rock acts Journey, Foreigner, etc that they can't be considered Left Field picks. Still, I think if you asked some of the FRL regulars...They would be surprised to see Bad Company on the Nominees List this ballot. KING

I had a weird dream about the nominee list, this is what i remember.
Pearl Jam
The Smiths
Nine Inch Nails
Tupac
Taj Mahal
and what really got me...
Alanis Morrisette.
Can't remember the rest of the list.

King,

I think the standard word Snub is more appropriate than left field for Bad Company. I am not a huge fan. I like some tunes and Paul Rodgers is a good singer. Journey and Foreigner are other key Classic Rock bands that come to mind. I do think the Nom Com would go for them over the others above.

Personally I chose less of the popular Classic Rock bands this year. I thought the Nom Com may go for some Pet projects while they still perhaps can as well as R&B and a couple Heavy Metal acts. I'm talking about the nominations as a whole.

Ben,

Thank you. I also like Charles Crossley's list.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 09/19/2016 @ 10:01am

Enig,

I just checked out Charles Crossley's list. It is a diverse and interesting list. I noticed as you did I'm sure that he omitted the Moody Blues. I go with this as a good shot this year. He has Chic and the Cure which are on my list and makes a good case for Carole King. I predicted her last year and was wrong. So I omitted her this year in favor of a more left field Singer/songwriter Todd Rundgren.

The Zombies are on my list but I am very skeptical about acts like Nina Simone and the Shangri Las. The people let go on the Nom Com would have gone for those. It's Not bad but I prefer lists such as mine, yours and King's. I agree with Charles Crossley on less 1970.s Classic Rock. The Moody Blues are perfect because they go back into the 60s. Clearly representing the 60s along with the Zombies. I know you agree with something like that.

Posted by Ben on Monday, 09/19/2016 @ 11:09am

Enig,

Charles Crossley has a few versions of his list. He seems to have taken out Carole King. He added ELO and Yes. This may be the list you prefer. This list is somewhat plausible but I don't think Big Mama Thornton, Link Wray and the Marvelettes are too likely at this point.

On the other hand the Cars are pretty likely even though I think they will be skipped for others. Most of us agree that Chic and the Spinners are very likely. They are nominated quite a bit. He still has No Moody Blues.

Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 09/20/2016 @ 08:07am

Ohhh Charles Crossley has a final version at the bottom of the article. He removed the early acts he had like Link Wray and the Marvelettes. In his final cut I only question Nina Simone and the Shangri Las. They are earlier artists. I would have swapped Shangri Las for the Moody Blues. That is due to the age groups in the committee. The Moody Blues are certainly plausible because of their rise in the Late 60s. He is on point with both the Zombies and the Cure.

It seems strange that hardly anyone has listed Little Feat on their predictions list. They did after all finish in second place in the Rolling Stone Reader’s Poll “10 Acts That Should Enter the Rock Hall.” They seem like a good left-field choice for the Committee to nominate. They released some great albums in the 70s, led by the late great Lowell George. Little Feat was also a great live band; “Waiting for Columbus” (1978) is one of the greatest live albums and probably the band’s best-known work. They fit the bill of a non-mainstream act, in the spirit of Los Lobos’ surprise nomination last year. Little Feat also drew high acclaim and support from their peers, many of whom are Hall of Famers. The likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Linda Ronstadt, and Bonnie Raitt have lavished praise for Little Feat. I think that holds some validity for their chances and something to consider. Granted, the reader’s poll was taken 6 months ago but I’m wondering if that holds any weight for the Committee to consider. Maybe not, still something to think about. Wonder what other think their Rock Hall chances are this year.

I might have been the only one who listed it on a prediction list. I put them as a left field pick along with Lucinda Williams as another. The rest was along the lines of most the other predictions.

Posted by Greg F on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 00:29am

Once again Sue, I will say that you have a great list.

Ben, yes I did like the list which had included Yes and Electric Light Orchestra.

Personally, I think that it ultimately comes down to one's preferences. I absolutely prefer to see and hear musicians who have mastered their instruments and vocals as opposed to those who lip synch to a click track.

I happen to prefer "progressive rock," over most other musical genres, except for perhaps the following: Baroque, Classical and Romantic music.

With that being said, here is my next to final list of nominees for the 2017 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame:

I have amended my list of nominees to reflect those who I believe will be nominated. I am going for 20 artists this time:

01. The Moody Blues
02. Yes
03. Duran Duran
04. Electric Light Orchestra
05. Sade
06. Carly Simon
07. Pearl Jam
08. Doobie Brothers
09. Foreigner
10. The Cure
11. Kool & The Gang
12. Chic
13. Nine inch Nails
14. Smashing Pumpkins
15. Jim Croce
16. Dire Straits
17. J. Geils Band
18. The Spinners
19. Willie Nelson
20. Little Feat

Of course there is also a possibility that Willie Nelson will receive a nomination, in lieu of one of the other artists on this list. Therefore I have added him and due to Nick's suggestion, I have added Little Feat to my list.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 10:22am

Enig,

I understand which list you liked. I like that oe more but I think Charles Crossley's revised list at the bottom is more realistic. I would love to see ELO and Yes on a ballot at the same time. I just don't think those committee people will do that. In addition I don't think 4 earlier artists on a ballot will happen. I love John Coltrane but at this point I am not sure that a Jazz artist has a good chance. Miles Davis was inducted at a time when that sort of thing was more likely. I like a couple tunes from the Marvelettes but I also think their chances are minimal.

Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 11:44am

I just want to mention that I am keeping my list unchanged this year. That is because I revised it a few times and ended up wrong on Steve Miller who was on one of my early versions of my 2016 nominees. For some reason I took him off. I did revise my 2017 list once or twice before the summer.

I am keeping it the same so I don't jinx the list. I will give some honorable mentions however. Bad Company, Journey, Carole King and Stevie Nicks Yes and the Monkees are some that just missed the Cut for me. My list itself stays the same.

There you go I just wanted to say that. I mean if I take J Geils Todd Rundgren or the Spinners off my list as example I would feel like I jipped myself.

Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 18:01pm

Sue, I love both ELO and the Moody Blues. I'm not sure why you feel the need to pit the two against each other? Yes the MB's have been snubbed longer, but I could argue several facts in favor of ELO as well. # of top 40 hits and worldwide popularity, also Jeff Lynne's qualifications on his own as well. He has only produced for the Beatles, Tom Petty, Brian Adams, George Harrison, and many others. He is also the only member of the Traveling Wilbury's currently not inducted into the Hall. What I am trying to say is why do two great bands have to fight it out with each other? Couldn't they both just get in as they both so richly deserve? On a seperate note, if the Go Go's get in before ELO does, they should just padlock the building and shut it down.

Posted by Dan on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 18:55pm

How about this inductee proposal:

Chubby Checker
Moody Blues
Journey
Janet Jackson
Pearl Jam

I think all of the above have been dissected, justified and vilified elsewhere on this site, but wouldn't it be cool to have one act each from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s?

Posted by Joe on Wednesday, 09/21/2016 @ 20:42pm

Joe,

Your five artist selections are great and nicely diverse. And it would be really cool to have those 5 decades represented.

But, please please please - let's induct more than 5 artists this year!

Posted by Mike on Thursday, 09/22/2016 @ 11:11am

2Pac - One of hip hop's most influential artists of the last 25 years becomes eligible this year

Nine Inch Nails - The NomCom's been on a mission to get Reznor in for the two years since he's been eligible. They won't stop until NIN is in.

Chic - Ditto for them over the last 11 years. Of course, in their case, they might be on the ballot for another 11 years!

Pearl Jam - Newly eligible this year. Just because.

Janet Jackson - She's a Jackson and she has actual talent. 'Nuff said.

War - They and The Spinners have been alternating every year for a while. This year it's their turn.

Kraftwerk - Ditto.

ELO - With a more populist nominating committee in place, either they or The Moody Blues will finally get a nod, but probably not both. ELO are considered by most to be just a bit more fun, plus Jeff Lynne is the only Traveling Wilbury not in.

Smashing Pumpkins - They are a dark horse modern rock choice and may split induction votes between themselves, NIN and PJ, but they were as ornate as the '90s got.

The Cure - They inspired a lot of dress-alikes from the late '80s through the '90s and had almost as loyal a following as The Grateful Dead, so third time might just be a charm.

Link Wray - Kills three birds with one stone: Early R'n'R, guitar hero, and racial diversity. He's native American and I don't there are any in the hall.

Journey - I personally don't think they deserve to be in but they seem to be riding a wave of sentiment this year.

Jethro Tull - They could be another left field choice, and should have been in years ago.

The Cars - Just missed it last year, and the Hall is looking for more '80s acts.

Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers - fills the '60/'70s obscuro slot that seems to be on every ballot.

Mike:

Thank you for the compliments. I would agree that there should be more than five (though, for the last few years, there have only been five or six inductees. It's the math of the voting process; each voter gets only five votes of the fifteen or sixteen nominees and an induction requires the vote to appear on 50% of the ballots, so it would be hugely unlikely (though not mathematically impossible) for more than five or six of the nominees to be inducted.

Posted by Joe on Friday, 09/23/2016 @ 08:18am

Let me take back part of what I said above. I thought it would be mathematically all but impossible for more than six nominees to be inducted, but after running the math, I may be wrong. (Please let me know if my calculations are wrong.)

Assume there are 15 nominees, and for easy math, there are 100 voters (or returned ballots). Suppose that each voted for five nominees, for a total of 500 votes. It would be theoretically possible for up to nine nominees to receive 51 votes (51 x 9 = 459) and thus be inducted.

I will stand behind my earlier assertion that this scenario would be highly unlikely.

The Cure
Joy division/new order
Depeche Mode
Pj Harvey

King,

I at least wanted to give Bad Company, Journey and Stevie Nicks honorable mentions. My list only has 15 nominees. That is a realistic # of nominees on the Ballot. Those 15 are my priority. If my list were longer it would have include these.

I'm still going with less key Classic Rock so I left those out but they are great choices. We agree with a whole bunch anyway like Moody Blues, Pearl Jam The Cure and the Spinners. I think most of us are expecting Chic yet again. The question is when will they be inducted? Now Procul Harum is also a good choice.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 09/23/2016 @ 17:20pm

Ben,

I had considered adding Procol Harum to my list. However, I think that the inductions of: The Moody Blues, Yes, E.L.O., Duran Duran, Carly Simon, The Doobie Brothers and Sade are paramount.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Monday, 09/26/2016 @ 10:44am

Enig,

I agree with what you are saying. Now Ironically I only picked the Moody Blues of the ones you said. I chose a few prog acts for last year's predictions and fell flat. So that's why left out Yes,ELO, Duran Duran. I want to see what happens choosing one prog act. I had said that this year I would predict a few R&B acts instead. The Hall seems to do that as opposed to a few prog acts at once. I also have picks like the J Geils Band. A Blues rock choice. The Hall is more likely to pick them based the tastes of the committee. I always Hope for the Moody Blues! I know you dig that Sue.

These are my 15 picks

THE RUNAWAYS ~ Early Influence
PAT BENATAR
CYNDI LAUPER
THE B-52'S
NIN
CARLY SIMON
WAR
ELO
PEARL JAM
TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELL'S

THE CURE
THE CARS
DURAN DURAN

Now I want to be clear that my wish list is somewhat different. I dont generally focus on a wish list. So A wish list would look like the following.

Bad Company
ELO
J Geils Band
Journey
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Pearl Jam
Todd Rundgren
The Spinners
Tina Turner
Yes
Warren Zevon

Those are some I would wish for. However that is Not my prediction list. I dont think for sure Bad Company, Journey and Yes will all show up. Not actually. I will stick to my prediction list. Chic is not in a Wish list of mine. I do think they will easily be Nominated an 11th time. I hope I didnt confuse anybody.

Why do they always ignore the great 70s bands like boston journey sammy hagar or newer bands like sound garden or alice in chains it seems that they wait till bands have been broke up for years or the main people are dead i think if they didn't kiss jann winners ass for years you are OUT jann is a F-ing moron as the folks on the commit are

Ken,

I havent seen yu on here. That is exactly right. Jann Wenner and people like that are biased to who they like. That explains why great 70s favs like the Allman Brothers Band, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Eagles Fleetwood Mac Eric Clapton,Aerosmith and many others are in. Those are all great acts. I love Eric Clapton. However others like Journey are still waiting. What can I say.

Posted by Ben on Tuesday, 09/27/2016 @ 15:43pm

Ok better late than never. I few weeks ago I posted what I think the nominee list will look like. Let’s take a more extensive look, shall we?

2Pac- A near certain lock for nomination, though not necessarily for induction. Hopefully the induction of N.W.A has cleared the deck for them but the members of the nominating committee tend to be broader minded than the voters have recently. In a just world he would go right in on the first try but I’m just not sure (particularly if there are only 5 inductees like last year).

Dick Dale- This is just a hunch but I can see him occupying the “guitar hero” slot. Let’s face it Dale should have been in already, not just for launching the surf rock craze with hits like “Let’s Go Trippin’” and “Miserlou” but also with his work with Fender guitar amplifiers. While they’re at it nominate his backing group The Del-Tones along with him to avoid another Steve Miller fiasco.

Electric Light Orchestra- With a new album in the last year and some famous friends already in this could be the year for Jeff Lynne & Co. Granted this one might be more of a pick from the heart than the head but it could be an easy way to sneak in a classic rock act now that some of the 70’s rock queue has cleared up.

Harry Nilsson- There has been a groundswell of support for Nilsson in recent years so he could be next in line for the singer/songwriter slot. Of course there was no pure singer/songwriter nominee last year so who knows.

Janet Jackson- Whether or not she would be up for performing complicates this pick but her nomination and potential induction would solve a lot of problems for the Hall in that she’s a R&B/Dance Pop icon. Plus from a busness standpoint if getting Janet Jackson and Pearl Jam in the same ceremony doesn’t sell tickets than I don’t know what will.

Judas Priest- Tom Morello seems to be gunning for their nomination and their radio hits might make them a little more pallettable to the committee than their contemporaries (Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Megadeath, Slayer) though with the passing of Lemmy they might consider nominating Motorhead posthumously.

Kraftwerk- Not only does this fit the pattern of nominating them and Yes in opposite years but with the nominating committee a little broader minded than in years past they seem sure to return to the ballot. Note to Hall of Fame voters: with electronic music being the force it is today stop ignoring the band that was breaking ground in this field before it was cool. Electronic music exits and it does not appear to appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. Deal with it!! End rant.

Nine Inch Nails- Trent Reznor & Co. (or just Trent Reznor depending on how you look at it) have been staples of the ballot for the last two years. There are obviously some NIN supporters on the committee and with the ceremony in Cleveland this year they’ll probably give NIN another shot.

Pat Benatar- Lots of hits, fans and from a decade that is just starting to get a closer look. If not this year I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets a nod in the next few years.

Pearl Jam- Duh!! Just start writing the induction speeches boys

The Cars- A less classic rock heavy ballot should improve their chances and this positive buzz their nomination generated last year doesn’t hurt either.

The Cure- The Smiths have been the 80’s alternative pick the last few years but this has been a great year for The Cure and that might translate to a return to the ballot. Plus getting The Cure to show up to the ceremony then it would to get Morrissey and Johnny Marr in the same room together.

The Moody Blues- Another pick from the heart but with a large fan base and a lasting influence in psychedelic and progressive rock this could be their year. I would not be surprised if this slot went to their 60’s brethren The Monkees who are riding a wave of momentum.

The Spinners- I’d expect a return to the ballot for the quintessential Philly Soul group. A group that’s too talented to keep out forever though they might get pushed out by an 11th nomination for Chic

The Zombies- I know I’m predicting a lot of 60’s acts but Steven Van Zandt and Paul Schaeffer are still on the committee and might still enough clout to get this British invasion act on the ballot.

War- Like The Spinners this is an act too stacked with talent to keep them out forever. Also like The Spinners this slot could go to Chic again.

So there you have it. Will my predictions come true? We’ll soon find out…

This would make an interesting ballot

01. Mary Wells
02. Ben E. King
03. Carole King
04. Tina Turner
05. Joan Baez
06. Judy Collins
07. Phil Ochs
08. Link Wray
09. Dick Dale
10. Billy Preston
11. Gram Parsons
12. Warren Zevon
13. Todd Rundgren
14. Captain Beefheart
15. Joe Cocker
16. Jim Croce
17. Barry White
18. Dionne Warwick
19. Patti Labelle

That's it everyone, Steven Van Zandt's recent tweet this morning confirms my suspicions of this past year or so: Joe Cocker will most likely appear on the upcoming ballot. Remember how much weight Van Zandt carries on the nominating committee and he is one of the most influential members, if not the most controversial. Remember he posted on Twitter glowing praise for Cheap Trick around this time last year and they appeared on the ballot and was eventually inducted. He did the same for the J. Geils Band although they haven't appeared on last year's ballot. I predict them to be the next blues-rock choice for the committee at this point. Anyway back to Cocker. He is an excellent choice for many reasons: the Woodstock connection, a brilliant interpreter of cover songs in which he often did better versions that the initial performers and his chart successes throughout the decades (from the 60s to his death a few years ago). He is a glaring omission from the Rock Hall and one of Rock's truly great voices. Billy Joel has lobbied support for Cocker and it seems the time is right. I really hope Cocker is finally nominated.

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I seem to remember there is some benefit every year that I think Steven Van Zandt and his wife are affiliated with. Each year an artist is honored and I remember that the last few years, the artist who was honored has been nominated on the next ballot and inducted. I know the last two artists were Joan Jett and Steve Miller. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I was interested in looking up who was honored this year to see if the trend would continue.

Are you talking about Little Kids Rock? This year they are honoring Smokey Robinson and ...

dun dun dun...

Kenny Loggins.

Ok, don't get over-excited about Cocker. Little Steven was just replying to a tweet. I wouldn't call it showing his hand. I could be wrong, but it's not the strongest indicator.

Also,

"a brilliant interpreter of cover songs in which he often did better versions that the initial performers"

No, no he did not. His versions were not better. They were also not as good. One other option, folks.

Posted by Philip on Wednesday, 09/28/2016 @ 21:55pm

Philip,

I do agree. We should not get Over excited about Joe Cocker. I read that tweet. Steve Van Zant was just responding. I mean I don't think acts have been tweeted in every year by Steve Van Zant and then end up on the ballot. He may have tweeted about Cheap Trick last year and also J Geils Band. Im guessing Nick meant last year and J Geils was not on the ballot. Do we know if Van Zant mentioned the Small Faces for 2012? I am not sure Twitter was popular yet. Do we know if VAn ZAnt tweeted about the Zombies for 2014. I doubt that all happened. As you said its Not a strong indicator at all.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 09/29/2016 @ 09:02am

Joe Cocker was certainly a singer/songwriter & this hall sure loves those guys/gals.

Posted by Paul in KY on Thursday, 09/29/2016 @ 13:07pm

How much of a singer-songwriter is Cocker when he did not write the majority of his hits? His induction, whether deserving or not, would be more like Linda Ronstadt's and less like Tom Waits's...

Posted by Sean on Thursday, 09/29/2016 @ 23:27pm

As far as Joe Cocker he was on an early version of my 2017 prediction list back in the Spring. I took him off because although he would be a nice posthumous pick there is more important Classic Rock acts to be on a ballot and I am predicting less Classic Rock. I have 4 Classic Rock type acts on my list this year. Most notably the Moody Blues. I have 3 other Rock acts from the 60s 70s era.

Joe Cocker was not really a singer songwriter he was an interpreter. He did not write most of his hits. He in fact would be more like Linda Ronstadt if inducted. The difference is Linda is still alive and the Hall wanted to honor her while she is.

Today is the last day of September. So the RRHOF will release the "list" any day now...

I want to thank everyone here for their support of the Moody Blues for the class of 2017!

I wanted to post something from the very famous "Venetian" in Las Vegas on their home page about the Moodies:

The band has created an exclusive set list and production for Nights in Las Vegas and the multi-show run at The Venetian Theatre will pay tribute to their decades-long career as one of the most successful and influential rock and roll bands in history.

The Moodies "Nights in Las Vegas" will run October 7,8,12,14 and 15, 2016. I think it would be a fantastic birthday gift for Justin to hear of FINALLY the Moody Blues as one of the nominees for 2017 at such a beautiful famous venue.

I wanted to clear up something about one of my posts from a few weeks ago.
I do not have anything against ELO. I actually love the band! I just do not think they should be inducted BEFORE the Moody Blues. It was said that Jeff Lynn is the only member of the Traveling Wilburys not to be inducted. I totally understand how the fans feel...However the Moodies were paying their dues a decade before ELO and toured with the Beatles. If not for the MB and other bands such as Rush,Yes,Tull and King Crimson, those who started prog rock would ELO even sound the same? I know I am on my soap box but the Moody Blues have been snubbed for so very long.
Good luck to everyone on their "lists". I appreciate everyone here....

Sue,

Very nice post. The Moody Blues have a better chance than ever to be nominated. As I have said many of my Favs like the Who,The Doors, Neil Young
Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Traffic and Genesis have been inducted. Somehow the Moody Blues have never even been nominated.

I also don't have anything against ELO. I like some of their tunes. I am not into whole albums from them actually. The main point is the Moodies started out about a decade before ELO. Go Now was in fact released in 1965 and I do know they opened for the Beatles. Then of course Justin Hayward joined in the Fall of 1966. This brought on their famous rise with Days of Future Passed.

I am also rooting for J. Geils Band and The Zombies but not as much as the Moody Blues. I am in fact a huge fan of Jethro Tull but I think the Moody Blues will be on a ballot first.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 09/30/2016 @ 17:09pm

I just want clarify that Justin Hayward and John Lodge both joined in the Fall of 1966. I just checked the facts on that. They helped usher in their Psychedelic and Prog sounds. I just read that Eric Burdon of the Animals recommended Justin Hayward for the Moodys. That makes sense. The Animals were entering a Psychedelic phase. Did you know that Sue. So There is another voter for the Moodys. There is a lot of 60s acts that are in the Hall that would vote for the Moodys.

It's spelled Jeff Lynne with an "e" at the end.

Electric Light Orchestra was not influenced by Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull or King Crimson at all!

Then, going by your logic, ELO should've been inducted before Rush and should be in BEFORE...

Pearl Jam
Tina Turner
Roxy Music
Duran Duran
2Pac
Eurythmics
Nine Inch Nails
Motörhead

Again, this Rock Hall doesn't work that way, they induct whoever whenever, who came first makes no difference to them, it means absolutely nothing.

Please believe me, I know.

Sue,

The Moody Blues should be inducted before ELO. Its a valid point that ELO should have been in before Rush and should have gone in before Pearl Jam, Tina Turner and many others.

Who came first doesn't matter Ahhh however the Moody Blues have had a long 50 year career. ELO as far as I know broke up around 1986 or 1987 and returned in 2001. So while who came first doesn't matter to the Hall it is true that longevity and consistency may matter. Genesis, Rush, Deep Purple and Chicago were inducted partly based on that.

The Moody Blues broke up for 5 years. 1973-1978 was an hiatus for them. It was during that same time that ELO had huge success. However the Moody Blues had a successful comeback in the late 70s early 80s. ELO may have been more accessible and had more huge hits on the charts. That supports ELO for a ballot first however the Moody Blues have had a more steady career over all. Oh also there is such a huge buzz on the Moody Blues. I have not seen as much buzz with ELO. The Hall seems to have taken into account a Buzz from fans and experts. It was the huge buzz of Chicago that factored them into going on a ballot and right into the Hall. Again this should be the year of the Moody Blues.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 10/1/2016 @ 07:59am

Sue:

I will sum that up by saying Power to the Moody Blues! The Moody Blues have a huge fan base. I am proud to be part of that Fan base. I am not a big ELO fan but they will someday have their time too. I SUPPORT the Moody Blues to be inducted into the Class of 2017.

Alright then. I am not going to get into an ELO vs Moody Blues thing here. I will just confuse things more and say Last year I actually predicted both ELO and the Moody Blues at the same time as nominees for 2016. I fell flat. Neither one were picked.

So I have predicted both. However since The Hall is so bad with Prog I am going with just the Moody Blues. When I said buzz I meant a buzz for the Rock Hall. Not overall. There has been a lot of buzz for the Moody Blues to go into the Rock Hall. Rush had that buzz a few years ago. Chicago did last year. There is some buzz for ELO into the Rock. I do agree that it doesn't matter who came first. I now withdraw from this ELO Moody Blues chat. I was supporting Sue generally. I will move on.

Hello all!

Well, October is now here. Two weeks ago, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee met in New York City to decide who will be nominated for the RRHOF Class of 2017. I suppose we were all hoping an announcement would have come before September ended, yet it appears October is the month the results are made public. Earlier last month, I had mentioned which 16 artists were likely to get nominated, followed by my ideas of which 7 artists would be inducted by December. I personally think this is the best shot for Electric Light Orchestra and The Moody Blues for their induction chances. ELO would go in first.

Having mentioned my ideas for who may be nominated, perhaps as a plea to the Nom Com, there are a number of artists that have gotten talked about on this website and in other venues that while some may think differently; I just do not see these artists as worthy of the Hall of Fame. It is not many, yet there are some notable stars that I would be shaking my head in asking why an induction would be on the range of probability.

The J. Geils Band: No, No, No, No, No, No! No. This rather absurd and sad defense of one of the least influential bands I have heard would not have gotten the traction it has gotten were it not for Jann Wenner desperately wanting these guys in. Let us be honest: Freeze Frame was not a great album, Centerfold was not a great song, and the J. Geils Band have never been that excellent live. I personally got bored out of my mind hearing excerpts from a late 1970's gig they did one time while listening to WFUV. A nomination, or even an induction, would pave the way for more mediocrities to be considered because of their perceived rock cred. Do we really want to debate the merits of, say, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band next?

Sir Cliff Richard: Perhaps it is just me, but I only ever really liked one song of his, We Don't Talk Anymore. Everything else was bland, pandering and blandly pandering. Decent man, but not worthy of a nomination.

Kool & The Gang: As much as I like Jungle Boogie, Celebration, Too Hot, Joanna, Cherish, and other songs of theirs; I just cannot see these guys be worthy of consideration. A slew of R&B hits of similar styles and approaches can only take you so far.

The Commodores: I think inducting The Commodores alone is not the best idea. Clearly, their best years were when Lionel Richie was in the group; so I think it should be Lionel Richie getting consideration for his entire life's work.

Kenny Loggins: I do not doubt Loggins' talents and songcraft. I do however think nominating Kenny Loggins before more well deserving artists is dumbfounded. At the least, Michael McDonald needs to get inducted before the Nominating Committee even thinks about Loggins getting in.

Those are just five I can think of at the moment. None the less, it would be wise for the RRHOF to not put these specific artists into consideration. And honestly, of the five, The J. Geils Band is the one act which each year they are not nominated I consider it a success. Let me know what you think of these ideas.

Would be cool if Faith No More updates their cover of Easy to have it now named Peyton,

Top five for me: 1. Grand Funk 2. Moody Blues 3. Joe Cocker 4. Yes 5. Three Dog Night

Posted by Roger Peterson on Sunday, 10/2/2016 @ 11:15am

Sorry got a late start this year...here is my list

1. Pearl Jam
2. Smashing Pumpkins
3. Yes
4. Tupac Shakur
5. Janet Jackson
6. Chic
7. The Monkees
8. Nine Inch Nails
9. Depeche Mode
10. The Moody Blues
11. The Cars
12. Alice in Chains
13. Duran Duran
14. The Spinners
15. Whitney Houston

My predictions for induction will be Pearl Jam, the Monkees, Janet Jackson, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Depeche Mode. I really like Tupac and think he should go in, but they will continue the trend of recognizing the rock bands omitted first.

Posted by K-Dawg on Monday, 10/3/2016 @ 14:44pm

K-Dawg's ballot would the best (and most difficult) ballot in a very long time for the HOF.

It's absolutely ridiculously difficult to pick 5 from that list.

Although, I have to say I think it's unrealistic.

I don't see the Nominating Committee putting 4 "headlining" potential 90's alt rock bands all on the same ballot. I also don't see them putting both Janet and Whitney on the same ballot either.

Nor 3 80's synth/pop/new wave groups (Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, the Cars).

I think that ballot is just too good to be true.

But man the Hall would go a long way in clearing the backlog for synth-pop groups, 60's rock acts, and 90's rock acts with that ballot. That group would definitely need at least 7 inductees though (if not more).

Posted by Donnie on Monday, 10/3/2016 @ 16:00pm

This would make an interesting ballot

01. Mary Wells
02. Ben E. King
03. Carole King
04. Tina Turner
05. Joan Baez
06. Judy Collins
07. Phil Ochs
08. Link Wray
09. Dick Dale
10. Billy Preston
11. Gram Parsons
12. Harry Nilsson
13. Warren Zevon
14. Todd Rundgren
15. Captain Beefheart
16. Joe Cocker
17. Jim Croce
18. Barry White
19. Dionne Warwick
20. Patti Labelle

"Electric Light Orchestra: It seems very strange that they aren’t already Hall Of Famers. But we’re running out of ’70s rock groups who aren’t in the Hall Of Fame already, and we’re going through a moment where just about everyone loves ELO. This seems like a year when they’ll at least be nominated."

Will the nominees be announced this Friday?

Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 10/5/2016 @ 07:04am

Roy,

That is a very good question. We have had a lot of fun with our prediction lists. The big question is when our the real 2017 nominees be announced. Friday seems logical. It was Oct. 8th last year. That is a Sat this year. I have been looking all over the web for a Date.Maybe its early next week. Does anybody know?

Posted by Ben on Wednesday, 10/5/2016 @ 07:34am

There is a tweet that answers the question from the FRL I think. They say that the real nominees will be announced the week of 10/17. Probably NOT on 10/17 but on a Tues 18th or on the 20th. It keep getting later. Of course the ballots are getting more complicated with all the genres Now. They consider all kinds of acts from the Moody Blues and ELO to Bad Company to Janet Jackson and also acts like Judas Priest and much more like 80s alt and Rap too. Thus the delay.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 10/6/2016 @ 09:18am

There is so many acts and genres to consider. So many acts for the Committee to think of. Bad Company, The Cars, Chic, The Cure, J. Geils Band, Janet Jackson, Judas Priest, Kate Bush Moody Blues NIN Pearl Jam Bon Jovi Journey Duran Duran War Warren Zevon and Yes as well as 2Pac LL Cool J Smashing Pumpkins Electric Light Orchestra Sade are possible Picks and many more. Clearly lotsof choice.

So it seems to me the Committee needs extra time perhaps. That is because so much variety is taken into account now and now they are thinking how a pick will be taken even though they miss the Mark anyway a bunch of times. Last year's ballot was better.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 10/6/2016 @ 11:54am

OK, seems the announcement is looming close so I better get on record with my latest revised wild ass guesses:

2 Pac
The B-52's
The Cars
Chic
The Commodores
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
Kraftwerk
The Meters
Moody Blues
Stevie Nicks
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Nina Simone
Yes

Posted by Shrek on Thursday, 10/6/2016 @ 17:23pm

With recent news, I'll make an alteration:

2pac
Carole King
Chic
The Cure
Electric Light Orchestra
The J. Geils Band
Judas Priest
Kool and the Gang
Los Lobos
The Monkees
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
The Spinners
Suicide
Yes

(The next prediction, if this is one less, would be Janet Jackson.)

FRL Regulars

1.Say you only had 1 vote and it was between Moody Blues and ELO for induction...Who would you choose? I would choose Moody Blues.

2.You think Roxy Music will finally be nominated this cycle? Ferry & Company have influenced plenty of bands. Probably 50/50 chance.

3.Has Stevie Nicks done enough outside Fleetwood Mac to earn solo induction? I would say YES!

4.Is this the year Country gets a nomination? I would say YES. Either Willie Nelson or my Gram/Emmylou joint nomination.

5.Will this be the year for a Black Crowes nomination? I'll say NO for 2016 but they should receive one in the next 5 years. KING

3.

Posted by KING on Thursday, 10/6/2016 @ 23:59pm

KING, given Moody Blues have been eligible for alot longer than ELO, I would give the vote to them. However, I think ELO is a better band than The Moody Blues.

Posted by Paul in KY on Friday, 10/7/2016 @ 08:03am

King,

I have talked a lot about the Moody Blues. Roxy Music is a good pick. Stevie Nicks has done a fair amount outside Fleetwood Mac. She would be a good female contender. They were not one of my examples in my last post but she is a fairly good pick. I like her a hell of a lot more than Janet Jackson but I see the Hall going with Janet J more. Stevie will be picked at some point.

Now the Black Crowes as you said should receive a nomination in the next 5 years. They are less influential I think than Pearl Jam. So some other year for them. They are eligible true but the Hall will probably only pick 2 or 3 90s acts. I like your mention of Willie Nelson.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 10/7/2016 @ 09:06am

KING:

1. Moody Blues. I like ELO better, but Moodys are more deserving
2. No.
3. Goodness, no.
4. Doubt it.
5. Negative.

Posted by Philip on Friday, 10/7/2016 @ 22:45pm

King,

I just want to elaborate on Stevie Nicks and 1 or 2 others from your Post. Back in 1998 Fleetwood Mac made tremendous sense since they were a major group of the 70s. Also in fact their career began around 1969 long before Stevie Nicks. Stevie Nicks helped make them huge. Rumours is one of the biggest albums of all time. A few albums since then like Mirage did well. However, Stevie Nicks solo is trickier. Belladonna with tunes like Edge of Seventeen and How Still my Love. The Wild Heart had tunes like If Anyone Falls and of course Stand Back. Its not a Fav of mine. The 3rd solo album Rock a Little and beyond are not as Notable. She will be on a ballot some time. I'm just not sure this Year. I said I like her a hell of a lot better than Janet J. Clearly they could be on a ballot at the same time. Now they are both female. The females I picked are Janet J and Tina Turner. If the Hall wants to push females more Stevie is a contender. I took my priorities into account and left Stevie off.

Willie Nelson is an excellent choice. I see him more in the Musical Excellence category. A country act has not been on a performer ballot in a long time. Gram Parsons is more likely on a performer ballot. He was viewed as a Singer/songwriter of sorts. Those have been on performer ballots plenty.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the beginnings of progressive rock, I have one particular question: When will The Moody Blues and Procol Harum, the two co- founders of the genre, along with previous inductee Jefferson Airplane, finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?

The same goes for later innovators such as: King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Electric Light Orchestra, Gentle Giant, Supertramp, Roxy Music and Duran Duran?

And of course, I would be remiss, if I did not mention Kansas, Styx and the "prog" adjacent artists, namely Sade.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 10/8/2016 @ 13:38pm

Enig,

I think the reason the Jefferson Airplane were inducted in 1996 is based on them not being Very Prog. They had some prog elements at times as with After Bathing at Baxters and Crown of Creation but went in a Revolutionary rock and Blues direction.

Now the Moody Blues are more truly Prog as is Procul Harum. Here is something odd. Steve Van Zant I hear likes Procul Harum but not so much the Moody Blues. None the less I think this is the year for the Moody Blues.

Posted by Enig on Saturday, 10/8/2016 @ 14:53pm

Since Rage Against the Machine were deemed ineligible by the Rock Hall, we've put Jane's Addiction in their place in our predictions.

Guess I will throw my 2 cents in here. My guesses for the 15 nominees:

Pearl Jam
2Pac
Nine Inch Nails
The Smiths
Kraftwerk
Yes
Janet Jackson
Electric Light Orchestra
Chic
The Spinners
Gram Parsons
War
Pat Benatar
Los Lobos
The Zombies

Enig,

Lets try that again. Somehow my post was credited to yu Enig. I think the reason the Jefferson Airplane was inducted in 1996 is based on them not being Very prog. After Bathing at Baxters and Crown of Creation have prog elements but they went in a Revolutionary Rock and Blues direction.

The Moody Blues and Procul Harum are more truly Prog. Here is something odd. I hear Steve Van Zant likes Procul Harum but not so much the Moody Blues. None the less I think this is the Year for the Moody Blues.

Enig,

I would be remiss If I didnt mention Jethro Tull. I love Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson is the best flutist in Rock I would say. I own lots of Jethro Tull albums. Benefit, Aqualung Thick as A Brick are among them. Tull had great success in the 70s as well. However, since The Hall is so slow with Prog I think The Hall will nominate the Moody Blues first.

The Moody Blues have remained more known so I predict the Moody Blues first. Tull is also one of my Fav bands. The Hall will not agree. Yes have been nominated twice. They have a fairly good chance this year. I think last year nominating Yes was an attempt to induct them in Honor of Chris Squire. King Crimson and Supertramp I think will b on a ballot later on. Roxy Music I see on a ballot soon.

I just wanted to say to everyone here thank you so very much for all the support for the Moody Blues for the class of 2017.

I respect everyone's opinions here but as it was said just perfectly by several of you I think it is past time for the Moody Blues.

Once that happens it opens the door for ELO,Roxy Music,Tull,King Crimson and others...

soon we shall see...

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Justin wrote "Night's in white satin" at age 19. He will have his 70th birthday next week. I think it past time for this classic timeless amazing band who has not stopped touring for many many years! Go Moody Blues!! :)

Why does this 'Enig' keep talking to himself?

Posted by Marissa on Sunday, 10/9/2016 @ 23:30pm

Marissa,

There was a strange glitch that caused Enig's name to appear instead of my Name Ben.I was saying stuff about the Jefferson Airplane. I think the reason the Jefferson Airplane were inducted is based on them Not being Very Prog. They had some prog elements at times. This was actually psychedelia which preceded The Prog. Elements of psychedelia led to Prog. The Jefferson Airplane went in a Revolutionary Rock and Blues direction. They abandoned prog elements when they dropped Psychedelia. By 1969 the year of Woodstock they were a bit of a Jamming band with Jorma playing some Blues.

I am not an Enig impersonator. LOL. The real Enig is out there somewhere Pink Floyd is truly Prog and were inducted in the same year. I do think that this is the year for the Moody Blues.Sue said it best. Go Moody Blues!

.....find it truly LUDICROUS that Janet Jackson, one of the least soulful R & B artists imaginable, is being seriously considered before Chaka Khan gets in (then AGAIN, the SAME thing happened with Joan Jett's induction before her IDOL and primary influence, Suzi Quatro.....)

My list of 25 essential considerations for nominees:

1. The Monkees (it's TIME, damn it.....)

2. Roxy Music (along with Big Star and The Sweet, one of THE biggest 80's influences, utterly original)

3. Dan Fogelberg (at LEAST as accomplished a songwriter as earlier inductee Jackson Browne - definitely eclipses him in the area of singing, and arguably better ALL-around....)

4. Duran Duran (YES, they ARE quite worthy)

5. Pearl Jam

6. Seal (most original and successful soul artist of the past 25 years)

7. The Guess Who

8. Spinners (argument could also be STRONGLY made for the Delfonics, as they paved the way for The Stylistics and Blue Magic, as well as Thom Bell in the producer category.....)

9. Judas Priest

10. Suzi Quatro

11. Three Dog Night

12. Yes

13. The Smiths

14. Chaka Khan (Yvette Marie Stevens)

15. Moody Blues

16. Badfinger

17. Big Star

18. Commodores (utterly RIDICULOUS they're not in yet)

19. Eddie Kendricks (one of THE most influential R & B artists in history, but he just hasn't EVER been acknowledged as such as a solo artist.....)

20. Tommy James & The Shondells (more of an original influence on a LOT of recording artists, than MANY might think.....)

21. Iron Maiden

22. Kate Bush (an absolute NO-BRAINER.....)

23. Jeff Lynne (as driving force in not JUST ELO but, the Idle Race, later Move and responsible for a BUNCH of smash albums by other artists, some of them inductees already....)

24. Kansas - as accomplished and successful a classically-influenced rock band as ANY....

25. Doobie Brothers - again, NOBODY has ever sounded like them, and in their heyday were as accomplished artistically as.....

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Journey, Styx, Soundgarden, The Sweet, Scorpions

Posted by ogam5 on Monday, 10/10/2016 @ 08:31am

ADDENDUM to 'Honorable Mentions' (not to say shouldn't be JUST as seriously considered):

Alan Parsons Project (again, HUGE influence on a VARIETY of future musical genres, including ambient and techno; very innovative more often than not, consistently musical and FREQUENTLY affecting.....)

Dire Straits - a BIG part of reviving rootsier rock in the late 70's

Kool & The Gang - more diverse and accomplished than a LOT of people realize

Tina Turner - honestly, would've thought she'd been inducted ALREADY.....

Todd Rundgren - in MANY ways, the Bowie of American music.....

Toto - don't get the respect they genuinely deserve, and also contributed to more than a FEW classic albums.....

Inducting Jeff Lynne all by himself under the Performer category will not include The Idle Race, The Move, Electric Light Orchestra, Traveling Wilburys or any of that work on other artist's albums, it'll only be for his small solo career, meaning...

"Doin' That Crazy Thing/Goin' Down to Rio" (1977)
Armchair Theatre (1990)
"Video!" (1984)
"Let It Run" (1984)
"Sooner or Later" (1984)
"Wild Times" (1991)
Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra (2012)
Long Wave (2012)

I'll never accept this, it would mirror Steve Miller as another fine Rock Hall mess!

.....invariably overlooked a BIG favorite of mine, Procol Harum, in my primary list, while a case could be made for not JUST The Cars and Pat Benatar (again, NOT before Suzi, who BTW, sold JUST as many records!) as WELL as Supertramp and 10cc.....

There have been changes to their prevailing judges, then only 2 remaining original members of Electric Light Orchestra means nothing, just look at Chicago's 2016 Rock Hall induction, they inducted original members who were no longer with the band, guitarist Terry Kath died in 1978, lead vocalist & bass guitar player Peter Cetera left in 1985 and drummer Danny Seraphine was dismissed in 1990!

It's time for Johnny Halliday, realy important singer in the story of rock and roll.

Using last year's nominations as a template for this year:
The Cars - same
Chaka Khan - this spot goes to Chaka or Tina Turner
Cheap Trick - J Geils or ELO
Chic - same
Chicago - I'm counting this as the soft rock singer-songwriter spot so Harry Nilson, Croce,or Carly
Deep Purple - T Rex, MC5, or Judas Priest
The J.B.'s - J.B.'s or the Meters here
Janet Jackson - same. The hall with stick with Janet until she is in then turn to Whitney
Los Lobos - interesting spot. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they stay on.
N.W.A - 2 Pac
Nine Inch Nails - same
The Smiths - Smiths or the Cure
The Spinners - same
Steve Miller - I'm going to cheat and put Pearl Jam here because I'm running out of room
Yes - Yes, Krafwerk, or the Moody Blues

Electric Light Orchestra

Why: It’s Electric Light Orchestra.

Why not: Did Jeff Lynne do something to severely wrong the Rock Hall? Kick someone's dog? They’ve been eligible since 1996 and that is the only thing we can think of.

ogam5,

I certainly would not object to a Kate Bush nomination. After all, she does have quite a few "progressive" tendencies. However, with regards to singer/songwriters, I was looking at more of the American acts. My list of "prog" nominees is almost entirely British. I was attempting to name those nominees who were mostly American afterwards. Tori Amos just so happens to be another great choice, in my honest opinion.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Thursday, 10/13/2016 @ 01:52am

When "scoring" the predictions after the nominees are announced, we'll be using this weighted system again:

* 1 point for a newly eligible artist (like Pearl Jam or 2Pac)

* 1 point for an artist who has been on the 2014, 2015 or 2016 ballot (Yes, Chic, etc.)

* 2 points for an artist who was nominated between 2007-2013, but not since (Bon Jovi, J. Geils, etc.)

* 3 points for an artist nominated prior to 2007, but not since (MC5, Mary Wells, etc.)

* 4 points to an artist who has never been nominated (eligible less than 10 years)

* 5 points for an artist who has never been nominated (eligible 10 years or more)

Enig,

I see you changed your list again. You also enlarged it. The Hall would never have a ballot of 25 acts. It may be that you wanted to simply post all the acts you have in mind. I am staying with the 15 act format. The Moody Blues has a great chance. Procul Harum and Yes have a pretty good chance. I think the Hall will wait on Kansas for quite some time. Dan Fogelberg is an interesting pick. He is an underrated Singer/songwriter. I am limiting my self to 15. I would have considered Pat Benatar and the Doobie Brothers. They missed the cut.

I have kept my list the same all through this season. There is 5 days until the announcement. I am not jinxing my list Now.

Posted by Ben on Thursday, 10/13/2016 @ 11:49am

.....at least a quarter, and possibly closer to two-thirds the artists in Chron's list you posted, Rick (Vendl II) are kinda ABSURD (as much as I like the 3 most accomplished albums of theirs - Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife and The Great Escape, find it downright WEIRD to see Blur cited for HOF consideration a SECOND time this week; if ANYthing, would expect Oasis to appear before them.....)

Posted by ogam5 on Thursday, 10/13/2016 @ 12:14pm

I am just going to repost my List. It is unchanged. I figure I would with 5 days to go.

Chic
The Cure
J Geils Band
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Motorhead
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Todd Rundgren
The Spinners
Tina Turner
The Zombies
2Pac

Those are my preditions. Others like Bad Company,Pat Benatar,Stevie Nicks and Yes just missed the mark. Those are good picks too.

That is my list. It has certainly been a long time since the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who and the Doors went in. So many got left behind. The Moody Blues are one of the most notable omissions over the years as we know. The Zombies were overlooked too. Hey at least they are starting to catch up.

At this point they are behind on 80s too. The Cure are a logical choice. They have their following. I do think Judas Priest and Motorhead could be the Heavy Metal choices. One of them should be right. Hey there could be 2. I am rooting for the Spinners. They didnt fire the Spinners fan on the Committee. They are nominated a lot.

I think its Time to either get Chic over with as an Induction or for the Hall to give up and Move on. I happen to think the J Geils Band have a good chance. They have been nominated before. Steve Van Zant likes those guys. Now they could skip Janet J. due to her baby but she is about to give birth I think. So she could be ready for a Ceremony by next Spring. Inthink. So she stays on my list. A big populist choice. Todd Rundgren is my left field choice. Call me crazy but Crazier things have Happened like Laura Nyro getting inducted. That was a left field one a few years ago. She is a bit less known.

Ben,

Much of my list has not changed, with most of those other artists, I have attempted to anticipate some of the "curve balls" that the Nominating Committee frequently throws at us.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Friday, 10/14/2016 @ 10:41am

Well you did cover an array of artists. Actually much of your list has not changed. Certainly the you had the Moody Blues, Yes, among a bunch of others all thru the season. You added a bunch. I know what you mean about curve balls. Dan Fogelberg and Little Feat are curve balls that could happen. I am going with Todd Rundgren as a curve ball. Nice list.

Posted by Ben on Friday, 10/14/2016 @ 20:52pm

My nominee guess. This is my final answer, ignore any previous list:

The Cars
Tina Turner
ELO
Chic
Carly Simon
Judas Priest
The Meters
Janet Jackson
J Geils
2 Pac
Nine Inch Nails
The Smiths
The Spinners
Pearl Jam
Yes

Posted by Classic Rock on Friday, 10/14/2016 @ 22:25pm

Enig,

I notice you don't have Emerson, Lake and Palmer as prediction. As you know Keith Emerson recently passed away. However, since Yes haven't been Inducted despite the passing of Chris Squire I guess we got awhile on ELP. I an a fan of ELP but the Hall is not. I would the Moody Blues, Yes and ELO first in fact. ELP indeed had their time in the 70s but I think you mentioned the Hall would wait a few years on them. I am not choosing them either.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 06:53am

Ben,

I think that ELP will still have to wait until after King Crimson is finally inducted.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 11:17am

My final prediction:

Pearl Jam
Kraftwerk
The Cure
Willie Nelson
Sting
2Pac
Nina Simone
Motorhead
Nine Inch Nails
The Runaways
Eurythmics
Chic
Chaka Khan
Dire Straits
J. Geils Band

Ben

I think that there may be a compelling reason for King Crimson to receive their first nomination in the not too distant future, possibly as early as next year.

I am still going to support: Yes, The Moody Blues, Duran Duran, E.L.O. and Sade for induction in 2017, however.

For one thing, those bands are deserving and their votes are necessary, in order to help get King Crimson inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2018.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 13:14pm

It would be awesome to see Sonic Youth get in. I know there are many others who have waited but they're one of my favorite groups. I hope that they're considered.

Posted by Joe on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 15:52pm

Enig,

I agree that Yes, The Moody Blues, Duran Duran and ELO would be on a ballot before King Crimson. However I only picked the Moody Blues in the prog Bunch for this year. I went with Your prog choices last year and only Yes was right.

Realistically the Hall usually has 5 R&B acts on the ballot. I went with that. Chic, Janet J, The Meters, The Spinners and Tina Turner are my R&B picks. Those have a much better shot. I am also figuring on old Rock choices like J Geils Band and the Zombies. Those are very likely. Steve Van Zant is a big fan of both.

Now if there is a few prog acts at the same time this year then my ballot will include more than one prog choice next year. We will see what happens.

Posted by Ben on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 16:34pm

With about 2.5 days to do, here is my final prediction:

The Cars
Chic
The Cure
J. Geils Band
Janet Jackson
Judas Priest
Los Lobos
The Moody Blues
The Monkees
Nine Inch Nails
Pearl Jam
Tupac Shakur
Smashing Pumpkins
The Spinners
Yes

Personally, I would like to see more female artists on the ballot, but I don't really have a ton of faith in the NomCom. Can't wait for Tuesday morning!!

Posted by Greg P. on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 20:18pm

Pearl Jam*
The Moody Blues*
2 Pac*
Chic*
The Monkees
Janet Jackson
Nina Simone
Pat Benatar
Nine Inch Nails
Los Lobos
Yes
The Spinners*
Judas Priest
The Cars
The Eurythmics
(I really wanted to add Kraftwerk)

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Musical Excellence Inductee)

*The 5 I believe will gain induction

Posted by Billy R on Saturday, 10/15/2016 @ 21:58pm

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is Early Influence, not Musical Excellence.

Posted by Roy on Sunday, 10/16/2016 @ 03:30am

Do they only pick one artists under Early Influence? I go with Sister Tharpe. Also, when those of you mention the group War, is it with or without Eric Burdon?

I guess we can say the Prediction part of the season for Nominees is winding down. We will know in 2 days what they are. I read 8AM on the 18th. It will probably be leaked before that and alll over the Web by 8. Thats what usually happens.

I saw some fine lists from the FRL regulars and others. Sue, Enig, Darin G. King and all of you are out there waiting. What I will say no matter what the Ballot should run a gammot of variety. I think There will be a little less key Classic Rock acts but I am rooting for the Moodys big time. I think there could be a couple Heavy Metal picks. At least one. Judas Priest is likely. I am going with 5 R&B acts. The Hall usually does. I will post once more bfore the big announcement

So tomorrow morning we will finally know the actual Nominees for the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It should be diverse as the person above posted. Is that a hint or someone got a sneak peek. Maybe just a hunch. I don't know if I am a Rockist or not. Regular Rock acts are my favs but I dig the Spinners and War too. We shall see what the ballot brings. I root so much for bands like the J Geils Band and of course the Moody Blues and Yes.So I guess. This is my last post before the announcement. Talk to ya tomorrow and the days to come.

Sounds promising. Now, here's hoping that they've quietly made some upgrades to the competency of the Voting Committe since last year so they'll actually be literate to that sort of ballot.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominations Coming Tomorrow; Here's Who SHOULD Be on the List

•Electric Light Orchestra - Like the Moody Blues, ELO expertly mixed rock with strings creating a unique sound that has remained popular since their earliest days. The fact that Jeff Lynne is not in the Hall is a crime and this was his most important achievement.

My prediction is that a lot of people, just like every year prior, will have a bone to pick with some aspect of the ballot. As if these 15 nominees will make everyone happy. So please copy and past from these comments when you post tomorrow:

1) I can't believe they left out .
2) I can't believe that is on the ballot but not .
3) I can't believe there are only of female nominees.
4) No Moody Blues???

Posted by Classic Rock on Monday, 10/17/2016 @ 20:35pm

All safe bets. A couple more that you could safely put money on:

{insert name of nominated Black artist} isn't even rock!

How is Madonna in the hall of fame, but {insert 3rd or 4th tier classic rock act that will never even be considered} isn't?

Posted by DarinRG on Monday, 10/17/2016 @ 21:37pm

COME ON, EVERYBODY! (Shouting intentional) THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO PREDICT THE NOMINEES AND ARGUE OVER WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED AND WHO WAS AND DIDN'T DESERVE IT! AFTER TOMORROW, YOU WON'T HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE UNTIL NEXT YEAR! DON'T MISS YOUR OPPORTUNITY!

Posted by Joe on Monday, 10/17/2016 @ 21:41pm

Would love to see Pat Benatar get some recognition, especially since Heart and Joan Jett have, but I'm not expecting it.

Sonny & Cher would be a nice surprise, but, again, not likely.

Roger Friedman is upset with this particular list of nominees. In October, 2012, he had similar kinds of issues with the nominations of Rush and Deep Purple. I think that his most recent reaction bodes very well for "progressive rock" artists.

Did Rush's long overdue induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013 have any lasting impact? We will certainly know sometime tomorrow if it has, depending upon who has finally been nominated for induction in 2017.

Posted by Enigmaticus on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 03:10am

I saw the Friedman comment. I didn't see any indication that he's actually seen the ballot, but if he has and is pissed off that's a promising sign.

Posted by DarinRG on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 03:31am

I very rarely read articles that Roger Friedman. His viewpoint, others with his type of viewpoint, are exactly why the HOF went downhill during the 2000's. Getting rid of people like him has only allowed the Hall to grow and get better than it had been. Now if they could just get rid of the rest of the people like him that think we should only have a few inductees every couple of years, rather than yearly 7-8 inductee classes.

Whenever I do read his articles, you can tell that he is absolutely bitter that he was relieved of his duties on the Nominating Committee. Good riddance, I say.

Little Feat remains to be missed by committee members and many of the respondents on this site. They continue to hold a fan base, influence other artists, and maintain a library of tunes that are timeless.

Posted by Hunt on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 10:31am

I have long wondered why Neil Sedaka, after writing hundreds of songs, producing, promoting and still active after almost 60 years, is not even worth a mention that I remember. I say this not as a fan necessarily but as someone who is trying to look at the spirit of the hall and what it took to get the people in it there in the first place. You can debate the merits of his inclusion. Not to diminish anyone else on the list but I am hoping for ELO and The Zombies. Finally, I know he would never get in but let us all acknowledge Sleepy La Beef. Second finally: he ain't rock but Joe Maphis could teach these youngsters a thing or two.

Congrats Roy on the Cubs winning the 2016 World Series 8-7 (10) Game 7. Guess you are playing some Chicago in celebration! Hope FRL regulars are enjoying the 2016 slate of RRHOF nominees. I like the conversation and banter on the nominees chances. Hopefully, groups like Chic,YES,J.Geils Band, Kraftwerk these multi-nominees sneak in or there will be a reoccurring logjam trying to get these artists inducted. It doesn't look good though. Pearl Jam, Journey, ELO looking strong for induction. KING

Posted by KING on Thursday, 11/3/2016 @ 01:52am

Because there are 19 nominations - The Hall should consider inducting at least 7 acts into the RRHOF - The most worthy within this years nominees and those who should be inducted are: Electric Light Orchestra/Joan Baez/The Cars/Pearl Jam/Yes/Steppenwolf and Janet Jackson.

Posted by Dan on Thursday, 11/3/2016 @ 21:40pm

The bloated ballot won't necessarily result in a sixth or seventh inductee ---- although that would be fantastic!

If I had an official ballot: Janet Jackson, Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Chic. Since Pearl Jam wouldn't need my vote, I'd likely replace them with Journey. (Jane's Addiction, Tupac and Chaka would be the next in line)

Posted by Mike on Friday, 11/4/2016 @ 04:33am

My 10 nominees are:
1. Journey
2. Yes
3. Ozzy
4. Kansas
5. Iron Maiden
6. Judas Priest
7. Mötley Crüe
8. Joe Walsh
9. Ted Nugent
10. Foreigner
